Game Preview: New York Yankees @ Minnesota Twins 9/12

The New York Yankees and the Minnesota Twins will finish off their three-game set and their season set tonight inside Target Field with the finale of the series. In the finale the Yankees will send Luis Severino to the mound on an extra day of rest to face off with Jake Odorizzi for the Twins. Must win for the Yankees with the A’s nipping at their feet, so let’s get to it here inside Target Field.

Severino heads into the start tonight fresh off his shortest outing of the season last time out against the Oakland Athletics. In the start Severino lasted just 2.2 innings while allowing six runs in the Yankees 8-2 loss out in Oakland. Since July 7^th Severino has posted a 4-5 record with a 6.83 ERA in 11 starts and the Yankees hope an extra day of rest can help the right-hander turn things around.

Odorizzi also struggled in his last start against the Houston Astros where the right-hander gave up five runs in 4.2 innings pitched in a loss. Odorizzi was strong early, but it all came apart in the fifth innings, which has been an issue for him all season long.

Game Preview: New York Yankees @ Minnesota Twins 9/11

The New York Yankees and the Minnesota Twins will continue their three-game set tonight with the middle game of the series. Welcome back to the starting rotation, Sonny Gray. Tonight the Yankees will send Sonny Gray out to the mound to face off with Tyler Duffey for the Twins. This could either be really good, or really bad, so let’s find out and let’s get to it here in Minnesota.

Gray will re-enter the Yankees rotation for a spot start tonight against the Twins. The Yankees have seemingly conceded the division with this move and are focusing on the Wild Card as they are giving each of their starters an extra day of rest with this move. Since Gray has been removed from the Yankees starting rotation the right-hander has gone 2-0 with a 1.83 ERA in 19.2 innings that spanned six games, one of them as a starting pitchah.

Duffey is tonight's starter for the Twins "bullpen game" tonight inside Target Field. Duffey will pitch an inning or two and will look to improve on his 1-2 record and 9.00 ERA in 14 appearances with the Twins this season.

Good morning Yankees family and welcome back to the blog. September 11^th, 17 years later. While many have forgotten or don’t think about the tragedies that happened on September 11, 2001 these incidents still go through my mind from time-to-time. When those terrorists attacked New York City, the Pentagon, and other attempted areas I took that personally. New York City is MY city. New York state is MY state. So, today we remember… but we will never and can never forget. When you get comfortable and complacent is when you become vulnerable, and we need to never become vulnerable ever again. Thank you to everyone who served on this day 17 years ago, in whatever capacity, and my thoughts and prayers are with anyone who was affected and/or lost someone on this tragic day. Much love.

And my baby, my heart always belongs to you and will always be with you. No matter what. I hope you are feeling better this morning, I love you!

Game Preview: New York Yankees @ Minnesota Twins 7/19

The New York Yankees really needed to come out and make a statement here in this series with the Minnesota Twins and I am not entirely sure that one can say that definitively. The Yankees can go a long way to getting back on track with a victory tonight in the finale but the Twins are a team that New York has owned over the years. A sweep would have been ideal, how sweep it would have been, as the losses continue to pile on but the great thing about baseball is that every day is a new day. Every game is a new game. Every series is a new series. Let’s end this series on a high note and let it flow into the next series, that’s all you can do. In the finale today the Yankees will send Jordan Montgomery to the mound to square off with the Twins starter Jose Berrios.

Montgomery was not sharp during his last start against the Boston Red Sox allowing a two-run home run and a third run in just four innings of work inside Fenway Park. That game marked the first time in the lefty’s short MLB career that he failed to complete five innings in consecutive games. Growing pains.

Berrios wasn’t long for his last start either lasting just 1.2 innings against the Houston Astros. In the start Berrios allowed a whopping seven runs, although just two of them were earned, on four hits raiding his ERA substantially. In Berrios’ last four starts the Twins pitcher has allowed 20 runs, 14 of them earned, in a total of 19 innings. Ouch.

Game Preview: New York Yankees @ Minnesota Twins 7/18

The New York Yankees and the Minnesota Twins will continue their three-game set this week in Minnesota with the middle game of the series. In the start tonight the Yankees will send Luis Cessa to the mound to take on a former Yankee in Bartolo Colon. Seeing Colon back in the American League could be fun, well fun if you’re named Aaron Judge, Gary Sanchez or any of the other Yankees offensive players. Colon and his mid-to-high 80 MPH fastball may be just what the doctor ordered for the Bronx Bombers if I don’t say so myself.

Cessa will be making his fourth start of the season and is still in search of his first victory here in 2017. To date Cessa has posted an 0-3 record with an ugly 5.93 ERA against the Oakland Athletics, the Texas Rangers and the Chicago White Sox which is alarming given those three teams current records and places in the standings.

Colon will be making his debut with the Twins tonight after being designated by assignment by the Atlanta Braves earlier in the season. The Twins signed the right-hander to a minor league deal back on July 7 and the 44-year old made one start in Triple-A, a clunker that saw him allow four runs in 3.2 innings pitched, before making his way back to the show.

Slightly Off-Target in Downtown Minneapolis...

Twins 4, Yankees 2...

The Baby Bombers tried but without too much help from the veteran leadership, the Yankees fell to the Twins in Minneapolis.

New first baseman Garrett Cooper finally had his coming out party with three hits (two doubles) and his first Major League RBI.  Clint Frazier, penciled in at #2 in the lineup, contributed two speed-earned doubles.  

The Twins struck first, picking up a run in the bottom of the 2nd inning.  Kennys Vargas walked and scored when Eddie Rosario lined a double to the center field wall.  They added another run the next inning.  Brian Dozier and Zack Granite both singled, and Joe Mauer walked to load the bases.  In one of the game's great plays, Miguel Sano hit a fly ball to Aaron Judge in right.  Dozier attempted to score on the fly ball, but was nailed at the plate by an exceptional throw from Judge to catcher Austin Romine.

The Yankees nearly escaped the inning without any damage, but starter Bryan Mitchell, covering first base, botched a catch from second baseman Starlin Castro which allowed Max Kepler to reach base with Granite scoring the Twins' second run.

The Yankees finally got on the board in the 5th.  The inning opened with a challenge play that was ruled in Minnesota's favor.  Didi Gregorius was initially ruled safe at first on an infield hit and headfirst slide, but replay subsequently showed that he was late to the bag as Adalberto Mejia's foot touched base just before Didi's hands. With two outs, Garrett Cooper doubled to right center, a smash to the wall.  He scored on Austin Romine's double over the head of right fielder Max Kepler.  2-1, Twins.

The game was tied in the top of the 7th when Chase Headley doubled to left center between the outfielders.  He scored on Garrett Cooper's second double of the game, a solid line drive to left.

Then the game fell apart for the Yankees.  In the top of 8th, it looked to have the potential of a big inning that could have given the Yankees the lead.  Clint Frazier hit a double to left, motoring around to second without hesitation.  Twins reliever Taylor Rogers intentionally walked Aaron Judge to face Matt Holliday.  It proved to be the right decision by Twins manager Paul Molitor when Holliday hit into a 6-4-3 double play which erased Judge at second.  Frazier moved to third.  After taking a big swing for a strike, Didi Gregorius attempted an awful bunt which just bounced up and down at home plate.  Twins catcher Jason Castro was able to easily throw out Gregorius for the final out.    

In the bottom of the 8th, Yankees manager Joe Girardi opted to stick with Caleb Smith.  Smith had entered the game in the 6th inning in relief of Bryan Mitchell.  For two innings, he was tremendous in retiring 6 batters with 3 strikeouts.  I know it is easy to second guess Girardi after-the-fact, but I felt that Girardi should have brought in one of his veteran relievers for the pressure-packed 8th.  Smith's brilliant two-inning work would have been a great confidence booster in making his MLB debut so it would have been a good place to pull him, especially with the Twins' 3-4-5 hitters coming up.  But Girardi elected to stay with the hot hand.  Joe Mauer and Miguel Sano opened the bottom of the 8th with singles off Smith.  Mauer's hit fell just short of Aaron Judge's sliding glove and Sano's seeing-eye single made it to left past a sliding Didi Gregorius.  After striking out Max Kepler, Smith gave up a single to left by pinch-hitter Eduardo Escobar which scored Mauer.  Sano moved to third on the play, beating a throw from Austin Romine to Gregorius, and scored when Eddie Rosario doubled, a rolling liner, to right.  The Twins had taken a 4-2 lead which would prove to be the game's final runs.  To Smith's credit, with the bases loaded after an intentional walk, retired the next two batters get out of the inning.

The Yankees were unable to muster any offense in the top of the 9th in the rain against Twins closer Brandon Kintzler and went down 1-2-3.

Doing the little things right could have won this game but it was not meant to be.

The Yankees (47-44) remained 3 1/2 games behind the Boston Red Sox with the loss.  The Sox fell to the Toronto Blue Jays, 4-3.  The second place Tampa Bay Rays moved 1 1/2 games in front of the Yankees and 2 games behind Boston with their 3-2 victory over the Oakland A's.

Caleb Smith (0-1) took his first loss of the season after his 8-0 start at Triple A.  Bryan Mitchell's final line wasn't bad.  5.0 IP, 6 H, 2 R (1 run unearned thanks to his own error), 2 BB, and 2 SO.  Aaron Judge's post All-Star Game slump continued with his 0-for-3 performance which dropped him to 1-for-21 for the second half.  He struck out once.

Odds & Ends...

Michael Pineda's consultation with Dr Timothy Kremchek for a second opinion has confirmed the need for Tommy John surgery.  Dr Kremchek will perform the surgery today in Cincinnati.  Although I doubt Michael ever pitches for the Yankees again, I wish him much success with the surgery and a speedy recovery.

Greg Bird will also have surgery on his ankle today.  He is expected to be out for six weeks.  While it is projected that he could be back in September, I'd find it highly unlikely given he has missed so much time the past two years.  Even more unlikely if the Yankees swing a trade for someone like Yonder Alonso or Justin Bour.  I hope this surgery puts Bird back on the path to be a contributing member for the Yankees.

The New York Yankees are off today but they are staying home, watching video and preparing for the Minnesota Twins to invade the Bronx this weekend in a three-game set. At this point you have to wonder if the Yankees even read scouting reports or talk to coaches and managers about the upcoming series with the Twins because it feels like the Yankees have absolutely owned Minnesota over the past few years. So for the purposes of this post I wanted to go back an even 20 years, which coincidentally although not on purpose, dates back to the 1996 Yankees and the beginning of a dynasty to see just how bad New York has beat up on the men from the Great Lakes over the years.

The battle of two of the worst offenses in all of the American League has been fun and I always personally enjoy seeing Joe Mauer and Eduardo Nunez but I'll personally be glad when the Yankees return home on Tuesday to the Bronx. One thing at a time though as we have this game to get on with as the New York Yankees send Nathan Eovaldi to the mound to face off against Ervin Santana. Game Preview: New York Yankees @ Minnesota Twins 6/19

Here we are once again with quite a bit on the line this afternoon for the New York Yankees. The Yankees will head back to Target Field one more time this afternoon to take on the Minnesota Twins in the finale of their four-game set. In the finale the Yankees will send Nathan Eovaldi to the mound looking to harness some of that magic he had during the month of May while the Twins will counter with their best pitcher this season in Ervin Santana.

Eovaldi was absolutely unhittable in May but June has not been good to him and neither has his splitter. Eovaldi had a nine-start unbeaten streak broken last time out after he gave up six runs in four innings and the Yankees righty will look to start another streak this afternoon inside Target Field.


Santana has not been sharp in his last four starts giving up five or more runs in three of those starts including his last start against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. Santana has lost five straight decisions leaving Twins manager Paul Molitor scratching his head for much of this season.


The game will be played at 2:10 pm ET inside Target Field and can be seen on the YES Network and MLB TV. The Yankees are off tomorrow before heading back to New York and the Bronx so this game has all the makings of a trap game. If New York gets caught looking ahead to hosting the Colorado Rockies they will get mowed down by a good pitcher like Santana so let's hope this veteran team can keep their head in the game and get another victory. Game Preview: New York Yankees @ Minnesota Twins 6/18

The New York Yankees and the Minnesota Twins continue their four game series tonight when they face off head-to-head in Game Three inside Target Field. The offense has been lackluster for both teams for much of this 2016 campaign so once again tonight it will likely come down to the pitching and the Yankees hope they are sending one of their best out there again tonight. I say hope because the Yankees still don’t know what to expect when they send tonight’s starter Michael Pineda to the mound every five days and neither do I to be completely honest but I hope for the best. Opposing Pineda will be Ricky Nolasco for the Minnesota Twins.

Pineda has pitched much better in his last three starts and he is saying a slight mechanical adjustment and the return of his slider are to blame for the resurgence. Whatever the culprit the Yankees will take his 2.89 ERA in his last three starts after posting a 6.92 ERA in his first ten starts of the season.

Nolasco has been a quality start machine lately for the Twins delivering his latest on Monday against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. Nolasco won his third game of the season in the outing to lead the team but has not pitched well overall in June. Nolasco’s June stats are 1-1 with a 4.66 ERA.

Saturday afternoon Yankees baseball in the dead heat of summer is like apple pie to me, it is part of being alive and part of being American. I love it and I love it more when the Yankees win… so win. Go Yankees!

Here we are again as we conclude another long week with another weekend that’s far too short and jammed packed with Major League Baseball. The New York Yankees kick off their weekend’s worth of games with the second of a four-game set with the Minnesota Twins on the road. Tonight the Yankees send their ace and stopper to the mound with an extra day of rest in Masahiro Tanaka as he looks to mow down and keep down the Twins offense. Opposing Tanaka for the home team tonight will be the LHP Pat Dean for the Twins. The game will be played at 8:10 pm ET inside Target Field and can be seen on WPIX Channel 11 and MLB TV.

Game Preview: New York Yankees @ Minnesota Twins 6/17

The New York Yankees and the Minnesota Twins are back at it again for the second time in their four-game set these two teams will play inside Target Field this weekend. Four games means four great pitching matchups and today’s contest does not disappoint, especially if you’re a Yankees fan. Today the Yankees will send Masahiro Tanaka to the mound looking to be the ace, the stud and the stopper for the club while the Twins counter with Pat Dean.

Tanaka has had a tale of two seasons type year thus far with extra attention being brought to his starts that involve extra rest vs. his starts that involve regular rest. Tanaka has been much better on five days rest than he has been on four days rest and will get an extra night of rest before tonight’s start in Minnesota. On four days rest Tanaka’s ERA is 3.44 while his ERA on five days rest is 2.92.

Dean heads into this start fresh off a good outing against the Boston Red Sox last time out. In that start Dean, a left-handed pitcher, limited the Red Sox offense to just one run on three hits in 6.1 innings of work. Dean did walk four in the contest though but the Red Sox offense is much better than the Yankees offense this season, especially against LHP, which could make for a long night for the Yankees bats.

I bring up the pitching matchups specifically because, at least on paper, these are two of the lowest scoring and worst offenses in all of the American League squaring off tonight head-to-head. It’s game time on a Thursday night between the New York Yankees and the Minnesota Twins as these two teams play the first contest in their four-game set. Tonight the Yankees will send the suddenly youthful CC Sabathia to the mound looking to get the team going in the right direction with a victory while the Twins will counter with Kyle Gibson. The game will be played at 8:10 pm ET inside Target Field and can be seen on the YES Network and MLB TV.

Game Preview: New York Yankees @ Minnesota Twins 6/16

The New York Yankees must be glad to get out of the rarified air in Colorado and into an environment where a lazy fly ball doesn’t go 500 feet off the bat. New York left Colorado yesterday and will be inside Minnesota’s Target Field tonight for the first of a four-game set between the two clubs. The Yankees will send their 5^th starter CC Sabathia to the mound fresh out of the fountain of youth to take on Kyle Gibson for the Twins.

Sabathia has been nearly untouchable since coming off the disabled list with a strained groin and has easily been the Yankees best pitcher during that stretch. Whether it’s a healthy groin muscle, a clear mind, a new knee brace or all the work on his cutter with Mariano Rivera and Andy Pettitte that is to blame for this renaissance who knows but I’m not one to look a gift horse in the mouth.

Gibson has made all of one start since returning off the disabled list with a shoulder strain and as you can imagine he struggled in that outing against a tough Red Sox offense. Gibson did go 5.2 innings in the start but he allowed five runs and seven hits in a Minnesota loss. Not bad after missing 42 games with the injury I guess.

The game will be played at 8:10 pm ET inside Target Field and can be seen on the YES Network and MLB TV. No Phil Hughes this series and no John Ryan Murphy but we can always pass the time by placing bets on how many times Eduardo Nunez’s batting helmet will fall off. Game Preview: New York Yankees @ Minnesota Twins 7/26

The New York Yankees and the Minnesota Twins will finish off their three game set this afternoon inside Minnesota's Target Field with another great pitching matchup. The Yankees will send Nathan Eovaldi to the mound looking for yet another good start for the club while Kyle Gibson makes the start for the home town Twins. The game will be played at 2:10 pm ET and can be seen on the YES Network, Fox Sports North and MLB TV.

• Eovaldi has made the best of his last two months worth of starts as he continues to evolve from a guy that throws 100 MPH with a straight fastball to a true pitcher. Eovaldi doesn't go deep enough into games to be relied upon aisde from being a fourth or fifth starter, he hasn't made it past the sixth inning since June 10th, but he has been one of the more reliable starters in the last nine or so starts. 

• Gibson was one of Minnesota's best pitchers in the first half of the season which was evident by his 0.86 ERA. The first half was then but the second half is a new season and Gibson struggled in his first start after the break. Gibson allowed six runs in five innings against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim which resulted in his first loss since June 21st. 

The Yankees will play this afternoon's getaway game before making the trip west to Texas to face off against the Texas Rangers in a four game set. New York needs to take advantage of this softer schedule by grabbing as many wins as possible and while also grabbing a player or two off the trade market. Game Thread: New York Yankees @ Minnesota Twins 7/25

What better way to spend a Saturday night then sitting at home and watching the New York Yankees face off against the Minnesota Twins inside Target Field. We will be doing just that tonight as these two teams continue their three game set this weekend in Minnesota as the Yankees look to put even more distance between them and everyone else in the AL East while the Twins try and stay close in the two Wild Card chases. The Yankees will send CC Sabathia to the mound tonight to face off against another left-hander in Tommy Milone for Minnesota. The game will be played at 7:10 pm ET and can be seen on WPIX Channel 11 and MLB TV.

Game Preview: New York Yankees @ Minnesota Twins 7/25

The New York Yankees and the Minnesota Twins will go at it head-to-head tonight for the second time this weekend inside Target Field. New York is playing a night game on Saturday, a rare occurrence these days in MLB scheduling for the Yankees, after facing off with Phil Hughes last night. Tonight the Yankees will send CC Sabathia to face off against the Twins starter Tommy Milone. The game will be played at 7:05 pm ET and can be seen on WPIX Channel 11 and MLB TV.

• Sabathia is coming off maybe his best start of the season and definitely his best two-start stretch of the season just at the right time for the Yankees. The last two times out Sabathia allowed just three runs combined in 11.1 IP against the Oakland Athletics and the Seattle Mariners. The Mariners and Athletics offenses are in line with the Twins offense so it is quite possible that CC strings together his third straight quality start tonight in Minnesota.

• Milone is coming off one of his more shaky starts of the season when he faced off against the Oakland Athletics last time out. Milone lasted just 2.2 innings and gave up seven runs, five of them earned, on five hits and three home runs in a loss for Minnesota.

New York and Minnesota play one more time tomorrow afternoon in a getaway game before the Yankees travel to face off with the Texas Rangers and the Chicago White Sox. All three of these series played on the road are very winnable series and it’s imperative that New York wins all three. The Yankees haven’t been the same team on the road as they have been at home this season so hopefully a road schedule like this with some “softer” opponents can turn that around.
