This Day In New York Yankees History 10/27

On this day in 1954 Joe DiMaggio and his wife Marilyn Monroe decided to get a divorce after just 274 days as a married couple. This was a disaster waiting to happen from the beginning as this was well known to be a stormy marriage. Marilyn filed the papers citing mental cruelty as the reasoning. Say it ain't so Joe.

On this day in 1999 the Yankees completed a sweep of their second consecutive World Series beating the Braves in four games. Roger Clemens led the Yankees to the 4-1 victory in Game 4 that ended the Fall Classic. The Braves become only the second team in World Series history joining the 1910-1919 New York Giants to lose four World Series in one decade.

  1. Marilyn and Joe were in Korea, she was doing a show and he was along to say things to the troop.

She walked out onto the wood makeshift stage and received the largest ovation she had ever had! When she is done singing her songs, she goes up to Joe and says; "have you ever heard such a crowd that loud"?
I once said Joe was not a very nice guy....anyhow, Joe comes back with "Yes, yes I have!". He couldn't let his wife have her moment of glory...not Joe!
One hell of a player, but not a very friendly guy at all.

    1. Smooth and never dove for a ball but most always got to it.

Thus...the name "Yankee Clipper" also called "Joltin' Joe".

Very good Baseball instincts, one of the best at reading the ball as it was being swung at...before hit, he would be leaning the direction the ball would be hit. Over the years, there have been, maybe five +/- with a jump such as he got on the ball (from 1944)!
When asked why he played as hard as he did all the time, he said (about); "someone may be seeing me for the 1st time, that is what I want them to remember!".

    1. Not really....
There was a schooner (sailing ship) that was called "The Yankee Clipper". It was one of the smoothest sailing ship of its day setting records every where it went.

    2. Sorry 'bout dat dar...
There was a new plane just out at that time (or about) but, the name was given because of the Ship or the Plane...take your pick!
Many (I among them) have always held it to be the Ship (all three same name). Who ever thought of the name had never countered either one of them! As far as I can remember.

    5. What did I say? Take your pick, everyone else has over the years. I don't think it has ever been certified one way or the other...it just was and that is that!

    6. apparently Joe D. was a petty, petty man..... very cheap you may say.

He was always jealous that other stars made as much or more money than him. In order dor him to be the highest paid player in the league he had to beat Ted Williams.

So what he would do is cut the other players hair before the games and charge the Yankee organization. With this added income he would technically be paid more than Teddy Baseball and satisfied his need to be the highest paid player.

thus the nickname the Yankee Clipper.

    7. That may be true but, I have a question;
Why was it they always had the ship superimposed with his nick name? Back in the day anyhow!

    8. Ok so I didnt really think I should doubt myself on this so I looked it up and wikipedia confirms that a Yankees announcer gave him the nickname comparing him to a new airplane, not a ship. Actually wiki makes no mention of the ship whatsoever.

In 1939, DiMaggio was nicknamed the "Yankee Clipper" by Yankee's stadium announcer Arch McDonald, when he likened DiMaggio's speed and range in the outfield to the then-new Pan American airliner.[6]

  4. Daniel...
Most of the questions put forth by Tman are from a book (by Mel Allen) I asked him to buy a few years ago and read. He has read it, that's the good part.

Things like; "Ty Cobb use to sharpen his spikes, so he could hurt the infielders trying to tag him out" That was untrue, it was a rumor and nothing but sarcasm by a 2nd baseman that was spiked one time by Ty.

After leaving the game, the guy said (something like); "He must sharpen his spikes!".

I forgot to tell him about another book that was written to belie a lot of the myths about many of the players. I wish I had but, just can't remember the name of the writer or the book.

  6. Question for you two guys; Are we the only three guys that have nothing better to do than this? Yup!

I am going back to sitting on the chair, perched on top of the table and hear great music from Coltrane, Brubeck and Phillie Joe Jones with a little Frank, Sammy Davis, Delia and Rose Mary thrown in!

  7. Daniel....did you ever think, that when you opened your sites door to the refugees from Yankee Fans Unite, that you would be obtaining two of the most talented / humorous talents, on the internet today........Old Ken, the Ranger, and Tommy Twasp ?
They will both deny that they are special, well maybe not Twasp, but they are. I am lucky, every time I am in their company. And, have learned much from those two cowboys.
All they ever wanted was a hands off approach, and the freedom to create their magic.
You gave it to them. Thank you.

    1. Hey this has been mutually beneficial. I love talking Yankees and can do it all day and with these guys, yourself, and of course everyone else I get to do that. All I am giving is a platform to do so. I should be thanking you guys, not the other way around.
