Do We Really Want "Big Game" James Shields?

Do the Yankees really want "Big Game" James Shields when he becomes a free agent after the 2014 season? At first glance I would say yes, he is AL East proven, he is postseason proven, he is young enough, and he would add some incredible stability to the Yankees pitching staff. Then I saw the tweet above from Sweeny Murti after his Game One start in the ALCS and that may change my mind.

Sure Shields may get us to the postseason, which is something I would take every day of the week after the last two seasons, but Shields doesn't look like he could get us far in the postseason. With a team chock full of questions marks in the starting rotation in 2015 already so we really want another if we head into October?

Originally I said yes but after a few starts this postseason I may be changing my mind a bit.

  2. Wow. With stats like that, how did he get his nickname? I don't want Shields signed. Outside of McCarthy and Robertson, I don't want the Yankees to sign any pitcher other than some minor league depth players. I would rather see them invest in their infield. Headley and a SS.

    1. On the surface I can see why anybody would want somebody like Lester or Scherzer on their team, but I agree... I don't think it's necessary.

Big contracts, like the ones that those two pitchers will command, should only be done when their services are absolutely needed. And while there are health questions abound on the Yankees, they do have Tanaka, Pineda, Sabathia, Nova (mind you, not for a month or so into the season), Greene, and Phelps.

Bring back McCarthy, who won't command a triple-digit contract, and move on with the infield.
