This Day in New York Yankees History 3/10: David Wells is Fined

On this day in 2003 the Yankees fined David Wells $100,000 for his comments in his autobiography that the club felt were detrimental to their image. But pitching a perfect game while still legally drunk is okay.

Also on this day in 1999 Yankees manager Joe Torre was diagnosed with prostate cancer. While undergoing treatment Don Zimmer will manage the team temporarily.

Finally on this day in 1958 Steve Howe was born. Howe was a lefty relief pitcher for the Yankees from 1991 to 1996 but is probably more well known for his record seven drug related suspensions. How signed three free agent contracts with New York and saved 31 games during his Yankees career. How was killed in a car accident during the 2006 season.

  2. That was David being David in his autobiography, was it any less he, when he pitched that game?
Any proof of him being drunk, I don't remember if there was anything proven, nor mentioned!

    1. I don't think there was any proof. I don't remember it being mentioned before the book. Advertising probably.

    2. That sounds much more like it, although the persona he shows the sports world could make it a true story.
I would like to see ANYONE Pitch a good game let alone a perfect one, just as I have said the HR people say Mickey hit while Drunk was a bit hard to believe.
Not that either one of those couldn't happen but, I would need proof!

As you stated, a persona thing with David and I have said; a self-deprecating statement by Mickey!
Both are stories that have gained traction over the years, Mickey's is more believable because everyone knew he drank a lot, but it was just him making an off-hand joke as he stepped on the plate!

    3. I could see Wells as a big time drinker. Looks can be deceiving. My whole life everyone told me I looked/look like a big pot head, never touched the stuff in my life.
