This Day in New York Yankees History 5/19: Orioles and Yankees Brawl over Crack Jack’s?

On this day in 2004 the Yankees spokesman Jason Zillo announced that Cracker Jack, baseball's most famous snack for over 100 years, will not be sold at Yankee Stadium anymore. Instead the Yankees will sell Crunch 'n Munch, a change that the Yankee Stadium fans rejected, because it "tastes better." Long story short that didn't last long and you shouldn't mess with baseball history, especially Cracker Jacks.

Also on this day in 1998 the Orioles Armando Benitez nails the Yankees Tino Martinez between the shoulder blades with a pitch and starts a brawl between the two clubs. This came after Benitez gave up a three run home run to Bernie Williams in that eight inning. Graeme Lloyd raced onto the field from the Yankees bullpen and punched Benitez in the face and Alan Mills bloodied Darryl Strawberry's face after he ended up in the Baltimore dugout going after Benitez.

Finally on this day in 1929 a 17 year old college sophomore and a 60 year old truck driver are trampled to death with another 75 fans injured when a violent storm causes the overcapacity bleacher crowd to run for cover at Yankee Stadium. The stampede happened in "Ruthville" and the game would be called with the Yankees ahead of the Red Sox 3-0 at the end of four and a half innings, an official game.

Yankees Postseason History Recap: Jeffrey Maier

Since the New York Yankees postseason is over and I am still holding strong to onto my boycott of the 2017 World Series let’s get nostalgic, shall we? Let’s take a look over the course the next couple weeks at the Yankees and their postseason history and let’s begin with a cold day in the Bronx back in 1996.

I can remember the first playoff game that I watched all nine innings of. Sure I watched a lot of the 1995 Wild Card round and I had watched some of the ALDS from 1996 but the first game, due to school, homework or the fact that I was just 10-years old and had the attention span of a 10-year old, Game 1 of the 1996 ALCS between the New York Yankees and the Baltimore Orioles was the first game I watched from the first pitch to the last and boy was I not left disappointed.

If you don’t remember that was the game at Yankee Stadium that saw Derek Jeter step up to the plate against Armando Benitez with the Yankees trailing 4-3 in the bottom of the 8th inning. Jeter would slap the ball the other way to the right field wall where outfielder Tony Tarasco and a 12-year old little boy who will forever be remembered were waiting. His name was Jeffrey Maier.

Maier visibly reached into the field of play and grabbed the ball from Tarasco leading umpire Rich Garcia to rule the play a home run. The game was tied thanks to a little help, a game the Yankees went on to win leading to a series victory as well for the Bronx Bombers.

This Day in New York Yankees History 8/6: Hank Aaron Passes Babe Ruth

We all know this is a New York Yankees website but we pay respect when respect is due which is why we honor the Braves slugger Hank Aaron today. On this day in 1972 Hank Aaron passed the great Yankees legend Babe Ruth for the most home runs hit with one team. Aaron hit his 660th and 661st career home run with the Braves to pass the Babe’s record with the Yankees.

The Yankees also traded away Bucky Dent four years after becoming Bucky "F'in" Dent and Armando Benitez for Jeff Nelson on this day but really today belongs to Hammerin' Hank in my opinion.

History of Trades Between the New York Yankees & New York Mets

Two big things are going down tonight inside the state of New York that pertain to Major League Baseball, the August 1st trading deadline and the beginning of yet another Subway Series between the New York Yankees and the New York Mets.
