Five Yankees Related Movies for Your Upcoming Weekend

The weekend is here and if you’re like me you’re just getting off of work. What will you do for the rest of this weekend? Do you have any plans? If so, leave them below in the comments section. If not here are a few Yankees related movies that you could watch while waiting on the Yankees game. Or, you know, you could always come chat with us on Twitter by sending @GreedyStripes a tweet. That’s always an option as well. On to the movies!!

“The Babe” is obviously a movie about Babe Ruth, the Yankees legend, but this movie covers it all. His time with the Boston Red Sox, the purchase from the New York Yankees, his time with the Braves, etc. It’s definitely an interesting one to watch.

The Pride of the Yankees is a movie covering the life and playing career of Lou Gehrig. I’m sure everyone knew that by now but how can you not watch this movie if you see it on television? Also, how can you not get goosebumps when Gehrig “considers himself… the luckiest man…. On the face of this Earth?”

At one point this season when I listed my Top 10 favorite baseball related movies I caught flak for not including the Yankees-themed movie “61*” so you best believe I am including it here. This movie covers the single-season home run chase in 1961 by Roger Maris, who hits 61 passing Babe Ruth who hit 60 home runs in a single season in less games (hence the asterisk), and teammate Mickey Mantle. I absolutely love this movie and I love Barry Pepper as an actor so this one I have watched at least 50 – 100 times already in my lifetime.

Finally you have “The Scout” which has Brendan Fraser as a pitcher for the Yankees. This movie covers it all, not only the game on the field but Fraser adapting to life in the big city and life in the big leagues after not coming through the system in the traditional sort like most pitchers. This is a great movie and one of my absolute all-time favorites, check it out. It has George Costanza for crying out loud, how could it be bad?

Alex Rodriguez’s Return to Baseball?

Holy clickbait, Batman! Both here and by Alex Rodriguez on his Instagram account. On Alex’s Instagram account, the Yankees former third baseman and DH in case you’re new to the universe, Alex posted a video of him and his girlfriend Jennifer Lopez working out, presumably in their home. Alex captioned the video with “Comeback???” Later on in the post you could tell that this was an obvious joke and that he was just showing him and his Bronx-born girlfriend working out but I figured let’s have a little fun with it anyway here on the blog and get everyone excited about the man they call A-Rod pulling a Bernie Mac in Mr. 3000 and making a comeback.

Did I have you going? Check out the video. Alex is doing pushups, both with and without J-Lo on his back, and Lopez is seen dancing on the video to “Hypnotize” by the Notorious B.I.G. It’s worth a watch or two. Enjoy!

Ranking the Best Baseball Movies of All Time

Because why not? It’s not like we have much else to do. Maybe catch up on some television, read a book, watch a movie, catch a Pokemon. Whatever. With this first official off day of the All-Star break I wanted to take the opportunity to rank the best baseball movies of all time, in my opinion. If your opinion differs leave it down below in the comments section of the site.

1. Pride of the Yankees

2. Bull Durham

3. Major League

4. The Sandlot

5. Field of Dreams

6. The Natural

7. Moneyball

8. Bad News Bears

9. 42

10. League of Their Own (Women hate me now all around the world)

An honorable mention goes to Eight Men Out which covered the Black Sox scandal and Shoeless Joe Jackson. If memory served it had Charlie Sheen playing Shoeless Joe (talk about some foreshadowing) so you can’t really go wrong with that now can you?

New Lou Gehrig Movie in the Works

Color me “EXCITED!!!!!!” for this one Yankees fans, there is a new movie in the works and it will center around the Yankees former captain and the Iron Horse, Lou Gehrig. Jay Russell will direct the movie “The Luckiest Man on the Face of the Earth.”

The movie will be based on the biography “Luckiest Man” by Jonathan Eig.

Lou Gehrig’s life was portrayed once already in the movie Pride of the Yankees which starred Gary Cooper and released in 1942. That movie was nominated for 11 Oscars. Russell states that this will not simply be a Pride of the Yankees remake but instead will be a “new depiction with a more contemporary style and approach” according to a report by Deadline.com.

Gehrig was elected into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1939 after playing 17 seasons with the New York Yankees. While with the team Gehrig won seven American League pennants. Gehrig also played in 2,130 consecutive games before falling to ALS, or what is more commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. Gehrig dies on June 2, 1941 almost two years after giving his famous “Luckiest Man” speech at Yankee Stadium on July 4, 1939.

Russell has also directed the movies “My Dog Skip” and “Ladder 49.” I got goosebumps just writing this article so I can only imagine the emotions when I actually get to watch it. Stay tuned and enjoy the rest of your Saturday and your weekend.

Top 10 Baseball Movies of All-Time

The offseason is over and Spring Training is in full effect so that means that meaningful baseball is right around the corner. Since most of the spring training games are played at 1:05 pm in the afternoon while I am stuck at work I have really been going through a Yankees and baseball in general craving. That’s when I pull out some baseball movies to watch as I gear up for the grind that will be the 2016 season. People love lists and really love reading them on this blog, the view counter for each post has taught me that, so I will take the time to rank my Top 10 Baseball movies of all-time, in my opinion of course, here for you today. So it Seems Crying IS Allowed in Baseball

Move over Tom Hanks (League of Their Own reference if you’ve been living under a rock and never saw that classic baseball-themed movie) and take a seat because there is crying allowed in Major League Baseball. It’s Kode. Yesterday and the day before were rough days for me for the most part, I have to be honest here. Without going into details I lost something so unimportant that I let it affect me to the point where I could have lost something that means the absolute world to me. And for that, I cried. Multiple times. At home. At work. On the way to work. Hell I did while typing this out. And for what? For something that’s completely and utterly replaceable?

Irreplaceable > Replaceable

Ben Affleck/Matt Damon Movie Still in Works about Yankees Wife Swap

On March 5, 1973 the New York Yankees made history by having the first documented wife swap in Major League Baseball history. Yankees teammates Fritz Peterson and Mike Kekich announced that they traded families, including wives, children and dogs, in an interesting turn of events. The swap worked out well for Peterson who eventually married his best friend’s former wife and had four children with her while things didn’t go as well for Kekich and Marilyn Peterson. These two broke up shortly after the swap and had to watch as Fritz and Kekich’s wife went on to live happily ever after. You can’t make this stuff up but directors Matt Damon and Ben Affleck will try to at least dramatize it enough to make it into a major motion picture in the coming years.

No release date has been announced for the project and no cast members have been cast as the idea has been thrown around back and forth and almost scrapped all together. The project, for now at least, seems to be back on and should be an interesting watch if you’re a Yankees fan. I wouldn’t go to the theater to see this but it will be something I will definitely check out if the movie idea ever comes to fruition.

That 2:00 Feeling – Soul of the Game – Full Movie

You remember those commercials for the Five Hour Energy drinks that described you as having the “2:00 feeling?” Well today I am feeling like I need a five hour energy drink, 15 straight days of sleep or something much more potent, I definitely have that 2:00 feeling. When I have that feeling I like to either lay in the bed or sit down on the couch with the AC on full blast and watch a good movie while I fall asleep. I think I’ll do that today, don’t tell me boss.

You can watch the entire movie “Soul of the Game” right here on the blog for free just by clicking the Youtube video above. The basic premise of the movie is that Josh Gibson, Jackie Robinson and Satchel Paige are fighting through the Negro Leagues trying to reach the Major Leagues when Branch Rickey finally comes calling.

It’s a good one, one of my own personal favorites. Enjoy.

The Mendoza Line Movie to be Screened in NY

Sometime last year I was privileged enough to get an advanced screening of the indie film The Mendoza Line, a baseball film that follows an illegal immigrant in the minor leagues. Next month the Mendoza Line movie will be shown in New York City at the Anthology Film Archives as a part of the VIVA Latino Film Festival.

If you want to check out the movie, which I highly recommend because I enjoyed the movie thoroughly, head out to 32 2nd Ave NY, NY 10003 on February,22 at 3:00 pm ET. You can also see the movie on the web by clicking THIS LINK.

I don't get a dime for you clicking the link or by showing up for the screening I just truly want to spread the word about the movie because it truly was a labor of love type film. Also the man who made the movie is a fellow member of the IBWAA. Check it out if you want or wouldn't mind!

Watch the Entire “Bucky F’in Dent” Game

It’s the offseason and the New York Yankees are not in the postseason but we can pretend like we are here on The Greedy Pinstripes. Yesterday we watched the entire Game 7 of the 2003 ALCS when we were supposed to be working, well I did anyway, and today we watch the 1978 play-in game between the Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees, or better known as the Bucky F’in Dent game. Enjoy.
