Off Day Meet a Prospect: Adeiny Hechavarria

The New York Yankees made a couple of moves before the August 31^st trading deadline here in 2018 to solidify the team for their postseason run, and one of those moves was to acquire infielder Adeiny Hechavarria from the Pittsburgh Pirates. Let’s meet the man who is probably happy that the Yankees don’t showcase last names on their uniforms. This is Meet a Prospect: The Adeinu Hechavarria Special Edition.

Adeiny Hechavarria Barrera was born on April 15, 1989 in Santiago de Cuba to Diosmede and Mirta Hechavarria. Hechavarria was a Cuban defector that made his way to the United States after he and 11 others fled the country via boat from Mexico during the Pan Am tournament in Mexico in 2006. Hechavarria worked out and showcased his talents for teams in the Dominican Republic in 2010 before eventually signing with the Toronto Blue Jays on a four-year deal worth $10 million. Hechavarria toiled around in the Blue Jays minor league system until August 4, 2012 when Toronto called him up to the Major Leagues for the first time. Hechavarria finished the 2012 season with the Blue Jays before being traded to the Miami Marlins along with Henderson Alvarez, Jeff Mathis, Yunel Escobar, Jake Marisnick, Anthony DeSclafani and Justin Nicolino in exchange for LHP Mark Buehrle, RHP Josh Johnson, INF Jose Reyes, catcher John Buck, and INF Emilio Bonifacio. #Blockbuster.

Hechavarria was named the Marlins starting shortstop on Opening Day for the 2013 season and finished the 2013 campaign with a .227 average with three home runs and 42 RBI in 148 games played. Hechavarria was much better in 2014 posting a .276 average with just one home run and 34 RBI in 146 games. Hechavarria saw his numbers continue to improve in 2015 as he posted a .281 average with five home runs and 48 RBI in 130 games for the Marlins and even won National League Player of the Week on April 26, 2015. Hechavarria saw a slight decline in 2016 as his numbers dropped to a .236 batting average with three home runs and just 38 RBI in 155 games. Hechavarria was back with the Marlins for the 2017 season before the club ultimately traded the infielder away to the Tampa Bay Rays for minor leaguers Braxton Lee and Ethan Clark.

Hechavarria finished the 2017 campaign with a .267 batting average and a career-high eight home runs for the Tampa Bay Rays. The Rays designated Hechavarria on August 1, 2018 to clear a roster space for the newly acquired outfielder Tommy Pham and was quickly traded to the Pittsburgh Pirates for right-handed pitcher Matt Seelinger and cash. The Pirates then flipped Hechavarria to the New York Yankees on August 31 of this year for a player to be named later, thus starting his tenure in the Bronx. Welcome to the organization, Adeiny, and welcome to the Yankees family.

OFF DAY Walk-Up Music Recommendation

Off day! Much needed and well-deserved if you ask me for the boys in pinstripes. This gives the left arm of Aroldis Chapman a day to rest, the groin of Gary Sanchez a day to heal, and the bat of Gleyber Torres to cool down before it literally catches fire. The MLB schedule makers, with the help of Mother Nature, were not kind to the Yankees in June so a day to rest and prepare before the Red Sox come to town is likely just what the doctor ordered.

With the day off today let’s take a quick listen to the song that plays inside those Yankee Stadium speakers every time one of my personal favorite Yankees comes up to the plate, Greg Bird.

The name of the song is “20 Min” and the artist’s name is Lil Uzi Vert. I have to admit I have never heard of this song or this artist, so this will be a learning experience for me as well. Enjoy.

Hello… Poop In Your Pants?

Good morning Yankees family. What is a better way to start off a Thursday morning and a Yankees off day than to talk about some poop. No, I am serious. This is an interesting article and read that I heard about first while visiting Yahoo Sports and it involves Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher Archie Bradley and the time that he pooped his pants before entering a MLB game.

He can tell the story better than I can so here is the story from Bradley to Yahoo Sports:

“I’ll just tell it. It was actually this year. I was warming up to go in a game. I knew I had the next hitter. I knew he was on deck. The at-bat was kinda taking a little bit, and as a bullpen guy in these big situations, I call ’em nervous pees. I don’t have to pee a lot, but I know I have to pee before I go in the game. I can’t believe I’m telling you this.

It’s a 2-2 count, and I’m like, ‘Man, I have to pee. I have to go pee.’ So, I run in our bathroom real quick, I’m ready to go. I’m trying to pee and I actually (expletive) my pants. Like, right before I’m about to go in the game, I pooped my pants. I’m like ‘Oh my gosh,’ like I know I’m a pitch away from going in the game, so I’m scrambling to clean myself up. I get it cleaned up the best I can, button my pants up, and our bullpen coach Mike Fetters says, ‘Hey, you’re in the game.’

“So, I’m jogging into the game to pitch with poop in my pants essentially… I did check the mirror. White pants, we’re at home. I actually told my teammates. I stepped out of the bathroom, ‘Hey, am I OK? I just (expletive) myself. I’m about to go in this game.’ They didn’t believe me until they, unfortunately, saw the mess in the bathroom because I didn’t have time. I had to go in the game.

“It was the most uncomfortable I’ve ever been on the mound. And I actually had a good inning. I had a clean inning, and I walked in the dugout and I was like, ‘Guys, I just (expletive) myself.’ They didn’t believe me, and then the bullpen came in and they’re like ‘Oh my god, you have to see this.’ … I just felt awkward, uncomfortable and just gross.”

Baby, that is totally our kid in the future. I love you!!

I’m Hungry: Yankee Stadium Food

Good morning everyone. Am I the only one that woke up hungry as hell today? I doubt it, but really. I’m hungry and the food at Yankee Stadium this season looks absolutely amazing. Let’s take advantage of the off day today as the Yankees travel back to the Bronx and hit the high spots in terms of food choices inside Yankee Stadium III.

Put away the peanuts, stay away from the Cracker Jacks, and popcorn is a waste of goof stomach space here in the Bronx. Especially when you consider that section 127 has hand rolled taquitos in a plastic Yankees cup! I love taquitos, and I won’t apologize for it either. The three taquitos are sitting in a helping of chili con queso and pico de gallo. Black bean and chicken are your protein options.

Bacon cheeseburger crispy dumpling. Enough said, right? The Noodle Bowl Stand in section 127 sells ground beef, bacon and cheese wrapped in a dumpling before being fried and serves them with Thousand island dressing and a stadium-made pickle.

Adobo Bao can be found in the Toyota Terrace and is a Filipino-style pulled chicken thigh and garlic aioli sauce topped with crispy pork cracklings in a steamed bun. If this is how they eat in the Philippines, count me in.

The Rotisserie Chicken and Steak Stand in section is where you need to go for all the meat you could ever dream of. The rotisserie chickens are all organic and cooked there right on the spot, served in halves with fries. The steak is a 10-ounce flatiron steak that is also served with fries.

Of course, you can always stop by Jersey Mike’s sub sandwiches, Mighty Quinn’s BBQ, Papa John’s Pizza (gross), Ben & Jerry’s, Nathan’s Famous (a must), Bacon on a Stick, Tater Kegs and so much more. Come hungry.

Hello… Another Off Day

Good morning everyone and Happy Thursday to you all. Friday eve, and six more days and counting. The weekend is almost here, and the New York Yankees are off today, enjoy the day. The team heads home to play host to the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim over the weekend which could include a Masahiro Tanaka vs. Shohei Otani pitching matchup in the Bronx on Sunday afternoon. Stay tuned for that because that will be a good one worth watching in my opinion. I hope you all have a great day.

WATCH: Soul of the Game

You guys ever get that 2:00 feeling where you are just sitting there at work and you have work you need to do, but don’t want to do? Or you don’t have any work to do and you’re contemplating napping or starting a new Netflix series? Yeah, me too. While I can’t get away with much napping at work, and since I didn’t bring headphones to start a new show, I will leave you with this full movie called Soul of the Game.

I have shown this movie on the site before, but I will do so again because it is one of my absolute all-time favorite baseball-related movies. It covers Jackie Robinson’s break into the Major Leagues and break through the color barrier, but it also covers some of the lives and careers of Josh Gibson, Roy Campanella, and Satchel Paige while they were in the Negro Leagues.

Every baseball fan should watch it, young or old. Enjoy!

Things to Do During a Yankees Off Day

Good morning everyone. There isn’t a Yankees game on today so what on Earth will we do with all our extra time we have?

• Well, it is a Thursday. Maybe go to work? Just a thought.

• If you’re off work today, maybe go outside? I know what people say these days about cancer, the sun, etc. but a little Vitamin D never killed anyone. Don’t quote me on that though.

• The Netflix original 13 Reasons Why is coming out with a season 2 TOMORROW so if you haven’t seen the original series, or you want to binge it before the second season comes out, now would be the time to do so.

• Black Panther came out on DVD Tuesday if you haven’t seen it yet.

• Start a new mobile game. Walking Dead Road to Survival is one that I play as well as Tap Sports Baseball 2018 and Marvel Strike Force.

Hello… Off Day

Good morning everyone and welcome to another off day for the New York Yankees. Enjoy them while we can, ladies and gents, because between Mother Nature and the MLB schedule makers there won’t be very many more off days for the team going forward. Rest up, we will need it come September and October.

And my Kari, every day I will spend with you. Work days. Off days. Busy days. Lackadaisical days. Every day, and all days. I love you.

Yankees (Supposed to Be) Off Day Walk Up Music Recommendation

The New York Yankees were supposed to be off today as they travel to Texas to take on the Texas Rangers so now seems like a good time to check in with an old special that used to be run here on the blog, the off day walk up music recommendation. Today I wanted to cover and showcase the music of Sonny Gray, the newest Yankee, every time he takes the mound inside Yankee Stadium.

So it Seems… An Off Day is Needed... And Mother Nature Had Other Plans Last Night

There aren’t many of these left so enjoy them while you can ladies and gentleman, an off day. The New York Yankees, and really any team at this point in the season, need as many off days as the league will allow. There’s always those who are struggling at the plate, those nursing little nagging injuries like Aaron Judge and his shoulder and those who just need a day to clear their head and be themselves. It is human nature and the 162-game Major League Baseball season is a grind. It is also a grind for the people writing about the team day in and day out as well believe it or not and a day off is great to catch up on bookmarks, writing or just relaxing and resting. Or that whole spending time with family thing if you’re into that sort of thing. Enjoy the day but don’t enjoy it too much because here in about two months we will be having these days every day and we will all be missing us some Yankees baseball.

Especially you. HEY YOU. I loves you. 

Ranking the Best Baseball Movies of All Time

Because why not? It’s not like we have much else to do. Maybe catch up on some television, read a book, watch a movie, catch a Pokemon. Whatever. It’s an off day ladies and gents so let’s have some fun like Gary Sanchez did recently for the New York Yankees. In a recent advertisement for the Yankees website the New York starting catcher starred in a fake commercial for a fake cologne and boy was it priceless.

Adam Warren is also in the commercial that shows a sweaty Sanchez taking slow motion swings in a batting cage. Warren casually finds the IAmGary cologne in his locker and is transported to an alternative universe after smelling the cologne. “Who is Gary?”

Yankee Stadium Off Day Music Recommendation

The New York Yankees are off today as they finally get a day of rest as the team travels to square off with the Houston Astros so let’s have a little fun today with our relaxation, shall we?

Every off day the Yankees have, or close to it as we can get, we showcase one of the Yankees players walkup music as they step up to the plate or enter from the bullpen and today, friends, will be no different. Today we will showcase the walkup music of the one that makes us rise….. yeah not the greatest choice of words. Aaron Judge!

Every time Judge takes his place at the plate inside Yankee Stadium the song "Through the Late Night" by Travis Scott can be heard blaring through the Yankee Stadium speakers.

Also, from my own personal collection, I have been stuck on this Logic album called “Everybody.” I especially like the song below called “Everybody.”

So it Seems We’re Taking the Day Off

Well, not on the blog. The Yankees are taking the day off though and boy do they need it after spending 18 innings with the Chicago Cubs only to do nine more innings with the Cincinnati Reds the very next night. It figures that those two teams would go for 18 innings while on ESPN’s Sunday Night Baseball and not during one of the Cubs numerous day games, huh? Oh well, it was fun and New York won.

So today we have a long-awaited and much-needed off day. Enjoy it. Have a great day everyone.

So it Seems Today is Going to Be a Good Day

The very best day with the very best occurrences and the very best distractions. Today is going to be a good day. Work has me stressed to the gills but today I took the day off from work for me, to get the things done that I feel are important to me and to do the things I need to get done. Everyone needs days like this every once in a while. Phone is turned off so don’t bother calling. I’m going to do me today.

Things to Do on a Yankees Off Day

So the New York Yankees are off again today leaving me with a burning question… what in the world are we going to do with ourselves to pass the time? Here are a few suggestions for you if you find yourself in the same conundrum.

Go outside. I know it sounds crazy but vitamin D deficiencies are no joke.

Read a book. I plan on picking up the “Thirteen Reasons Why” series as I have begun watching the show on Netflix.

Speaking of Netflix…. Netflix and chill. Or just chill. Cardio is healthy for you and it’s something I am a firm believer in doing as often as humanly possible. Especially in the rain.

Listen to some new music. There’s plenty to choose from. I have been on a Ed Sheeran kick here lately, and it was a Weeknd kick before that and I played the absolute hell out of J Cole’s album “For Your Eyez Only” before that but there is so much more that I am sure I’m missing out on. The Chainsmokers are releasing an album tomorrow I believe, which means it’s probably been on the internet for weeks now and I just missed it, and so much more I could name. Music is a release. 

The Final Off Day Open Thread of 2016

Here we go, the last off day of the regular season before that long stretch of time where it's colder than I'd like it to be, darker earlier than I'd like it to be and that long stretch of time where baseball takes a back-burner to sports like the NFL and the NBA. The offseason sucks without the Yankees being in the postseason but that just may be a reality in 2016 unfortunately. Many aren't surprised, or will say they aren't anyway, but truth be told I predicted the Yankees winning the 2nd Wild Card this season. Insert egg on face.

But we will worry about that when the math says the Yankees are eliminated from postseason play, tonight we rest. With that said I leave you with this open thread for the evening, the last Yankees off day open thread of the 2016 season. Have a great evening.

The Yankees Final Off Day of 2016

The New York Yankees are off today. The next time we get to say that, barring a historic run of course, the 2016 regular season will be over and 10 teams (or possibly more I guess) will be awaiting their fates in the 2016 postseason. I had the Yankees making the postseason this year before this disastrous series with the Boston Red Sox but that's baseball sometimes. I'm not giving up, I'm just extremely discouraged and I can't see it logistically happening.

So with this final off day of the regular season we have the final off day music recommendation of the season. This is the last one, that's a lot of pressure. Who do I choose? My favorite player? The flavor of the week? How about just the song I like the most?

So with that in mind I went with an old song but a song that I truly love, the song that plays when Tyler Clippard enters a game inside Yankee Stadium. "Ready or Not" by the Fugees. Enjoy!

Yankee Stadium Walk Up Music Recommendation featuring Gary Sanchez

What do you get when you win consecutive MLB Player of the Week Awards? I don’t know, that’s a question you will have to ask the Yankees rookie catcher Gary Sanchez. I know what I do when the Yankees have an off day and they also have a player that has won consecutive Player of the Week Awards under their belt as a rookie, I recommend their walk up music every time they take a Yankee Stadium at bat in hopes of hyping you up for your work day.

Every time the Kraken, or El Gary Sanchez as I like to call him, steps up to the plate inside Yankee Stadium the song Unstoppable by Sia blares through the speakers in the Bronx. If it’s not, it should be anyway. That same song blares through your speakers, hopefully, today while we all enjoy this Yankees off day.
