Yankees Off Day Link Dump

The New York Yankees are off today so let’s get caught up on a little reading. Shall we?

The Greedy Pinstripes are a part of the BYB Hub, which is designed to be a one-stop shop for all things sports writing. This isn’t just for fans and writers of the New York Yankees as all walks of fandom are included so check out the BYB Hub.

Suzie Pinstripe of Bleeding Yankee Blue posted a wonderful article I recommend to all named “Making the Yankees Loveable Again.”

Section 36, a Boston Red Sox blog, had a visitor inside Fenway Park recently in Baylee Simpson. Baylee is a dancer and the current Miss Bluebird. She is also a Yankees fan, so check out her trip to Fenway and to the historic Section 36.

John Salvatore explains on his blog, Yankees Brigade, how Luis Severino has been even better in 2018 than he was in 2017. As hard as that is to believe that it could be possible.

Happy Third Birthday to the BYB Hub

The BYB Hub. What can I say about the BYB Hub here now in its THIRD year of existence? The Hub started out as an idea from Robert Casey and Bleeding Yankee Blue as an opportunity for newer blogs or lesser known blogs to get free exposure all in one central hub and it's done that and more. So here we stand three years later still going strong. Still fighting, still clawing our way to the top. And that climb and that fight and that struggle is made so much easier thanks to the Hub.

So Happy Birthday to the Hub and once again, and I can't say it enough, thank you to Mr. Casey and the crew over at BYB.

The Weekend, The Playoff Push and the BYB Hub

If you work the stereotypical 9-to-5 job like myself you just clocked out and your weekend has officially begun. Congratulations, we made it! If not then just keep your head up, your weekend is coming. As we all approach the weekend in some capacity I wanted to take the time to share something with you all and plug something that I haven’t in quite some time, the BYB Hub. If this is the first time you’re hearing about the BYB Hub let me give you a quick overview. The BYB Hub was started up by Robert Casey of Bleeding Yankee Blue (BYB) to give writers the opportunity to showcase their work and talent on a bigger stage than they may normally be accustomed to. I can remember when Bryan Van Dusen and myself started this blog we didn’t have someone like Mr. Casey reaching out and publishing our work on a one-stop shop for all to see. We grinded, we worked hard and we tried to do things the right way and the only way we knew how. Now not to say that the blogs that are listed here aren’t doing that, they wouldn’t likely be listed here if they weren’t, but what I am saying is the Hub was designed to make that easier and beneficial to all.

As we gear up for the weekend here are a few posts and links from the BYB Hub. Go and check out the Hub at BYBHub.Blogspot.com where great sites like ours, Section36 (a great Red Sox blog for you to read just in time for the weekend series), BYB are located. This is just not for Yankees related materials and fans only either, eventually the hopes are that all 30 MLB teams are showcased in some capacity. So check it out and watch us grow. If you know of anyone who should be added to the hub then reach out to myself (@GreedyStripes) or Mr. Casey (@BleednYankeeBlu) on Twitter. Thank you in advance and enjoy your reading and your weekend!

Shohei Otani Hints He Wants to Get PAID After 2017

One thing that no one can ever say about me is that I don’t listen when other people talk to me so when Robert Casey of Bleeding Yankee Blue talks to me I always let it soak in. One thing that Mr. Casey taught me was to always be different, to be myself and to always look for the little “nugget” of information that gets passed over or otherwise overlooked by the rest of the Yankees blogosphere. That’s what I did this morning when I read this article from the Bleacher Report regarding Japan’s ace Shohei Otani and his intentions of coming to the United States after the 2017 season.

Shohei Otani, or more commonly known as “Japan’s Babe Ruth”, discussed this week in an interview his intentions of coming to the United States after the 2017 season and there was a little nugget of information in there that screams to me “I want to get paid.” Here is the exact quote from Otani and let’s see if you can pick out which line I’m talking about. I’ll even make it easy for you and bold it.

"Personally, the new CBA rules do not mean much to me, and it is not going to stop me from going over to the States," Ohtani said. "The only thing that worries me is the other young players that might try to go overseas after me. I don't want to set the bar too low for them and have to get underpaid because of my decision."

Now one must remember that the Japanese people, by culture, are a very respectful and prideful group of people so I genuinely believe Otani when he says that he will consider not only himself, his friends and his family in his decision next season but that he will also hold the Japanese-born players behind him that follow him to the States in his heart when he makes this decision.

How did this come up? Well the Major League Baseball Collective Bargaining Agreement states that a player under the age of 25 or with less than six professional seasons under their belt is considered to be an International Free Agent. This would make Otani subject to the IFA spending cap rules which could cost him millions of dollars since it severely limits the pool of teams that could be interested. If Otani were to wait until after the 2019 season he would be a true free agent and could sign with any team for basically any amount of money but Otani seems inclined to forego the wait and sign with a big league club before the 2018 season, just in time for a few key Yankees pitchers to hit free agency and just in time for a literal boatload of money to come off the books.

According to the new CBA if Otani decides to jump ship from Japan to the United States he can only sign for $5 million. This would widen his pool of teams to choose from to whatever number it is now that you want to speculate, mine would be no more than six-or-seven teams given the presumed price tag, to all 30 MLB teams. In this day and age $5 million is almost literally nothing, for a hitter or for a pitcher and Otani can do both exceptionally well.

So Otani has a big decision ahead of him. Does he leave Japan after the 2017 season and possibly leave millions on the table to pursue his ultimate dream or does he wait out two more seasons and go for broke? That only he can answer but I have a feeling that all 30 MLB teams are hoping it’s the former and not the latter. I leave you with this, his 2016 stats from Japan, and a dream of Otani wearing your favorite team’s jersey in 2018. I mean it will just be a dream since he will be wearing Yankees pinstripes but still, everyone needs a dream. Have a great day everyone.

As a pitcher: 10-4, 1.86 ERA, 140 innings, 11.2 SO/9

As a hitter: .322/.416/.588, 22 HR, 67 RBI

While We Wait: BYB Hub Link Dump

The BYB Hub is a one-stop shop for all things baseball, not just Yankees baseball, and was brought to you by the brilliant mind of Bleeding Yankee Blue owner Robert Casey. You won’t see the “top” blogs on there like River Ave Blues or LoHud but what you will see is a bunch of up-and-coming and equally as talented writers and blog that are getting the help that many blogs and bloggers before them couldn’t get. Check it out as I leave a few links for your reading enjoyment while we wait.

Also be sure to check out or apply for the BYB Hub by checking out BYBHub.Blogspot.com or by contacting Robert Casey on Twitter @BleednYankeeBlu. Thanks guys and enjoy.

Trade Deadline: Click Baiting & What Happened to Actually Reporting on News?

What the hell happened to actually reporting on the news? I’m sorry to start your Tuesday morning off with a rant but I feel like there is a lot of things I have to get off my chest right now and this is the best place for me to do so because I don’t want to be blocked by half of twitter or hated on by half my friends. What happened to actual journalism and why is click baiting so damn “necessary” in an era where news is always up to the minute and people are going to be reading anyway? It’s sickening and it’s why I got into blogging, not to change the world but to show people that it can be done the “right” way.

On Sunday night I went on a bit of a sarcastic rampage because anyone and everyone was reporting what they “knew” about the potential Aroldis Chapman trade to the Chicago Cubs. Now I was on twitter when people like Chris Cotillo were still essentially “nobodies” in the grand scheme of things so I’m not knocking on people because they just own a blog or don’t have millions of followers but I saw people “breaking news” that had 36 and 46 followers citing “sources.” To complicate matters you then had real and true insiders citing these same “sources” with the vaguest titles or the most click baiting titles I have ever seen in my life.

Andrew Marchand of ESPN “reported” that the Yankees “may” trade Chapman to the Chicago Cubs a good three-or-four hours into the whole debacle where names were being leaked and the trade was reportedly close. And of course they “may” trade him, they may not trade him as well. What’s your point? And where did the journalism in all these things go? Are there anymore journalists left in the world or are we as fans subject to the same recycled crap with a few words changed around for the rest of our reading lives?

Twelve hours prior to the Yankees being “close” to trading Chapman to the Cubs these same “sources” and insiders had him going to the Washington Nationals. Six hours later they had him going to the Cleveland Indians. Then the Cubs. Do you guys actually believe anything that you write or is being first, whether it’s accurate or not, or does being first mean THAT much to you? What happened to integrity first? Come on guys you are better than this. I know it because I’m old enough to have seen it. Believe it or not you may get more clicks and more views, which I understand is what pays your bills, for being real than being a d-bag. Ask Robert Casey and his Bleeding Yankee Blue site who probably get more clicks per day than you do. Why? Because they are awesome and better yet they are ACCOUNTABLE.

Oh and Cubs fans. You ought to be ashamed of yourself talking to Julie DiCario the way that you do. Shame the hell on you and I hope I’m around when karma comes back to bite you in the ass. Sad and pathetic little people. Rant over!

While We Wait: Link Dump from the BYB Hub

There’s some good and there’s some bad to the whole Yankees being on the West Coast thing and playing games well into the night without three-and-a-half hour rain delays I just struggle to find some of those good things most times. One of the few good things I have found though is it gives me an open slot on the blog to do a link dump while we wait for the games to begin. Tonight we will showcase some of the talent that is currently being offered on the BYB Hub.

If you’re not familiar with the BYB Hub this was the brain child of Robert Casey, the owner and my dear friend from Bleeding Yankee Blue, and it serves as a place for an up-and-coming blogger or just a guy with a website to get his articles and content read. When many of us were just starting out we didn’t have the sort of free exposure and advertising that the BYB Hub was designed to offer and Casey, myself and everyone else involved are looking to give to those what we only wished we had when we started. It’s really a great site and it’s full of great content, not just Yankees content either, so I suggest you check it out. BYBHub.Blogspot.com.

While We Wait Link Dump for May 19th from the BYB Hub

There is only one thing, ONE THING, that’s good about having the New York Yankees play out on the West Coast. I tend to get a lot more things done with my extra three or four hours of my day. I am an early riser and I usually run all day long so staying up until 1:00 AM or 2:00 AM ET just to wake up at 5:00 AM to watch the Yankees is not my cup of tea but like I said I use these games as a way to catch up on things. I’m hoping you will do the same here tonight as I had this novel idea, why not do a link dump here giving you a chance to catch up on some reading while you wait for the Yankees game to begin or you start winding down before bed.

I’ve done this before showcasing Yankees-related material from major news publications like NJ.com, the USA Today and the New York Daily News but those guys get enough clicks anyway. When they aren’t getting enough clicks they come up with click baits like “Yankees frontrunners for Mike Trout” so I thought I would bring you some articles from true fans, websites that need some love and members of the BYB Hub. So enjoy and check out the BYB Hub at bybhub.blogspot.com.

Checking in on the BYB Hub

Depending on what uniform you were wearing and what team you were rooting for you were treated to a hell of a game this afternoon between the New York Yankees and the Seattle Mariners. When you see games like today, if you’re anything like me, you want to read as many different opinions and articles as you can about it and that’s why a place like the BYB Hub was created by the owner, and my friend, of Bleeding Yankee Blue, Mr. Robert Casey.

A little background on the hub if this is the first time you’re reading about it. Robert Casey approached me and many others about setting up the hub as a place for new and growing blogs to get the free exposure and readership that was never given to the current big dogs in the Yankees blogosphere. While much of the discussion here is centered on the Yankees there is some variety, and we’re seeing more and more variety every month added to the blog, including an Oakland Athletics blog, a Boston Red Sox blog and even a blog showcasing MLB players with Dutch heritages. It truly has something for everyone including the very lovely Lisa Varga who doubles as a model, actress and Yankees fan all in one cute little blonde bundle.

So check out the BYB Hub by heading to BYBHub.Blogspot.com and get multiple views, articles and opinions all in one convenient little hub. There is sure to be something for everyone and if you’re an aspiring writer who wants to be showcased on the Hub then contact me and I can work with Mr. Casey to get you signed up.

Thanks for all the support!

#BYBHUB Change-Up: Is David Ortiz a HOFer? - The Red Sox Perspective

As you all know by now, even the last person under that rock over there just found out, David Ortiz is retiring at the end of the 2016 season. Ortiz has had a stellar career including three World Series championships, 500+ home runs and nine All-Star Game appearances. The debate whether Ortiz should be in the Hall of Fame or not almost immediately began like it does with most every notable retirement story. Rather than simply put my opinion out there to Yankees fans and readers of The Greedy Pinstripes we decided we wanted to do something a little different with the help of the BYB Hub. With the help of Robert Casey (Bleeding Yankee Blue) and Section 36 (a Red Sox blog currently listed on the Hub) we came up with a plan to syndicate our arguments for and against Ortiz’s induction into the Hall of Fame.

As you’re reading this Section 36’s case for Ortiz is currently going up on the blog here while my case against goes up on his blog. In a few hours you will see my case against Ortiz here on the blog and his on his blog over there. Basically we wanted both sides of the equation to get both sides of the story at the same exact time. We also wanted to get a discussion going and possibly have this as the stepping stone to more integration between the blogs, more syndication and more working together with the members of the BYB Hub. If you can’t wait to see my response head over to Section 36 and read my response now after reading his here on TGP and please, PLEASE, be respectful. This doesn’t work without that. Thank you in advance and we hope that you enjoy.

Before I get into Ortiz’s case for Hall of Fame election, let me address a couple of the common strikes held against him.

First, that PED list. Yes, he appeared on the 2003 list. But, no he didn’t use illegal PEDs. How do I know? Because MLB told me so. They stated that the testing done in 2003 initially didn’t distinguish between “supplement” and “banned supplement.” After all, it was the first testing. Some kinks needed to be worked out. So, Ortiz made it on the list that was never supposed to be released (so, why bother “fixing” it?) for something that wasn’t banned…and wasn’t illegal. That’s why you haven’t heard any whispers since by people who saw him use, or knew he used, or whatever. No testimony came out later naming him. Nothing. Just the one test for a supplement, which was explained away by MLB. Non-issue.

The second one is the DH issue. How can you be in the Hall-of-Fame if you don’t play the field? Well, I guess the same way you can be in the Hall of Fame if you don’t bat. Pitchers only pitch, and DH’s only hit. How is it different? Additionally, DH is an actual position. It’s not like people telling me closers deserve to be in the Hall of Fame even though they’re not even good enough to start for their teams. When Ortiz’s manager makes a list of his nine starting batters, Papi’s name was almost always in that list.

Now, of course, I think defense can be important to get into the Hall of Fame…depending on the player’s claim to fame. If you’re say Jorge Posada, and you’re basing your resume on being a great hitting catcher, defense is important. The numbers on their own aren’t enough to get him in as a hitter. If he was an outfielder or a first baseman, his numbers wouldn’t stand out. He needs the “catcher qualifier” to have a chance. So, when you’re trying to get in as a catcher…the fact that he can’t actually catch is important. Putting shin guards on Manny Ramirez doesn’t make him the best hitting catcher ever.

But, David Ortiz doesn’t need any of those qualifiers. He’s not trying to get in as a great hitting shortstop. So, his ability to play shortstop is irrelevant. He’s trying to get in as a great hitter. Why would his lack of playing defense hurt him? If he wanted to…or if the Red Sox wanted him to…could he play first base as well as, say, Jason Giambi? I would certainly think so. After all, it was Ortiz’s glove that made the Red Sox choose him over all the other available DH/1B types in 2003. So, if he had fumbled and stumbled around for ten years like Giambi at first, he’s a Hall of Famer? But, because he played a position that didn’t require that, he’s not? How does that make sense? It doesn’t.

So, now that we've eliminated the arguments against his election, what about the ones for?

I’ve discussed my personal rules for Hall of Fame election before. But, for the new people… The Hall of Fame requires a ten year long career. So, I figure if that’s the minimum, you better have all ten be all-star type years. Not always actual selection. After all, the most deserving players don’t always go. But, the type of year where people would think you deserved to be there. Ortiz? He was a nine-time all-star. One year he wasn’t he hit 28 HR with 99 RBI. It’s close, but I’ll give him the ten all-star type seasons. Within those ten seasons, I require 5 MVP types. Again, not actually winning the award. But, if people were discussing the best players in the game, that player’s name would come up pretty quickly. Ortiz? He finished in the top five in MVP voting five years in a row, and tenth another year. That sounds pretty good to me. Beyond that, if a player plays beyond the ten year minimum, I just don’t want him to embarrass himself. Don’t have ten all-star seasons, and then ten seasons where you’re hitting .136. Ortiz? He currently sits at 503 home runs, and 1641 RBI. Fair to say he didn’t let himself go in those non-all-star years.

I haven’t even mentioned his postseason heroics. Mostly because I couldn’t care less when it comes to Hall of Fame eligibility. Hard to say that performing well in a series that not everyone gets a chance to play in makes you a better player. But, let’s just say his performance in the playoffs isn’t exactly his downfall.

So, there you have it. No, he’s not a Pedro Martinez type lock. But, it’s still a pretty easy decision. He has the career numbers. He has the peak numbers. His top comp on baseball reference is a Hall of Famer. (Frank Thomas. Who, by the way, was a DH more than a 1B). It’s a slam dunk that he should get in.

Have no idea how anyone could think otherwise.

Happy Birthday to the BYB Hub

On this day one year ago my good friend Robert Casey, owner and chief of Bleeding Yankee Blue, approached me with an idea that he called the BYB Hub. What the BYB Hub was designed to be was a central place for you, the baseball fan, to get all your news in one place… but with a twist. You aren’t going to see the ESPN news feed or the MLB.com recycled news articles here on the hub, you’re going to see the best of the best (in my opinion) of the up-and-coming and established bloggers on the internet.

The gorillas of the blogging world, for Yankees fans it’s places like River Ave Blues for instance, have their own market and they do their own thing. On the hub the focus is on the little guy that is just starting out or the aspiring writer and blogger that wants some new, and free I might add, exposure to their writing and their respective blogs.

See when blogs like Bleeding Yankee Blue, or own blog here at The Greedy Pinstripes and others started they were built without help for the most part. They were built on hard work, dedicated and a load support from everyone reading this blog post this morning. Casey, the great baseball mind and person that he is, wanted to give a new avenue to writers and the BYB Hub was born.

While Robert Casey and I run blogs centralized around the New York Yankees, and there are plenty of Yankees blogs on the hub if that’s what you’re looking for, the Hub was designed to feed a general MLB fan’s craving for news and opinions as well. There is a great Red Sox blog on the Hub, Section 36, an awesome blog centered around the Oakland Athletics, Bullpen Baseball and Sock Talk , and even a blog devoted to players in Major League Baseball with Dutchbackgrounds. There’s a little something for everybody.

I want to take this time to once again give my sincerest gratitude to and appreciation not only to Casey for starting the Hub but to all the great blogs and writers that participate in the Hub. We made it one year guys and gals, let’s make the second year even bigger and even better! So CLICKHERE and check out the BYB Hub and if you’d like to be a part of the Hub (or you know of a blog that should be included in the hub) contact Casey on Twitter by tweeting @BleednYankeeBlu or contact myself @GreedyStripes and I will contact Casey direct.

Have a great day everyone and Happy Birthday to the BYB Hub!

The BYB Hub is Gearing Up for the 2015 Season

When Robert Casey sends me a text message, an email, a DM on Twitter, a smoke signal, whatever it always gets my full and undivided attention. The guy is a king and is too humble to realize it and that’s what makes him great as a blogger and even better as a father. When Casey approached me about the BYB Hub I was ecstatic and honored to be a part of it and as the Hub gears up for the 2015 season I am excited to bring you an update about it.

The Hub, if you haven’t read one of these posts or one of our tweets before, is a place where the up and comer in the blogging world to be heard. For the longest time the guy who blogged as a hobby or the girl who wanted to step into the ring with the gorillas had no voice and were generally ignored for a long time, I was there so trust me, but that is no longer the case. Whether you have one blog post or 1,000,000 your work can be showcased for free on the BYB Hub alongside our blog, Bleeding Yankee Blue, Yankees Unscripted (Chris Carelli’s awesome blog), and others. It’s not just Yankees related material either there is a very well done Red Sox blog called Section 36, an Oakland Athletics blog, and even a blog dedicated to Dutch players in Major League Baseball.

If you’re starved for new and original content, if you have to know everything going on with your team, if you’re looking for a new site to read or you’re a site that needs to be read and heard then the BYB Hub is the place to start. To join you can contact Casey on Twitter (@BleednYankeeBlu) or you can always send us a shout as well (@GreedyStripes) and I will make sure the message gets to where it needs to go.

Enjoy the day everyone and check out the Hub as we gear up towards the 2015 season.

Update on the BYB Hub

We haven't done one of these updates in quite a while simply because it was the grind of the offseason. All the big free agents were signed, all the trades were done and we were all simply sitting and waiting at our windows on spring to begin. Spring has begun and the Yankees are already playing their sixth Grapefruit League game today so no better time then to give you an update on the BYB Hub.

If this is the first time you're reading about the BYB Hub what it was designed to be was a place for the unknown blogger and the up and comers to have a place to showcase their talents. There are plenty of writers out there that are extremely talented and just lack a place to showcase their talents. I know when we first started here we didn't have a hub set up by a well respected blogger like Mr. Robert Casey from Bleeding Yankee Blue and our site was built on hard work, dedication and lots and lots of hours of work. The Hub is designed to make that a little easier and better for everyone involved.

I expect this hub to explode this season and it already has 20 blogs being showcased including our own and over 4,000 views so if you're a blogger and you want potentially 4,000 views in the short time this hub has been up then give me a tweet @GreedyStripes or direct Mr. Casey directly on Twitter @BleednYankeeBlu.

Former Yankee Update: Clay Rapada

Remember Clay Rapada the side arm throwing LOOGY and former New York Yankee? Well according to Robert Casey of Bleeding Yankee Blue, yes he has his sources now (how long before a fake account tweets out fake information at the July 31st trading deadline?), Rapada has signed on for his 14th season with the San Francisco Giants. Rapada signed a minor league deal with an invitation to spring training and will compete for a roster spot in 2015.

We're rooting for you Clay and we hope you make the team and continue your dreams.

Yankees Make "Most Interesting Trade" List

As many of you know The Greedy Pinstripes is a member of the BYB Hub who's mission is to get the smaller and less known blogs free exposure. The BYB Hub is run by Robert Casey of Bleeding Yankee Blue so if you want to check out his hard and generous work be sure to click HERE. Another member of the Hub is "In the Mitt Baseball" and they published a very detailed and well thought out article showcasing the most interesting trades of the offseason. CLICK HERE to read the entire lengthy article but one trade the Yankees made was on the list and I will share that in an excerpt below. Enjoy!

  1. Nathan Eovaldi Garrett Jones and Domingo German to the Yankees for David Phelps, Martin Prado and Cash

Why it’s interesting: One of the rare future-minded moves made by the Yankees. Eovaldi is a young inning eater with upside. Phelps is depth and flexibility. Prado is also a flex-player and a productive, veteran teammate renowned for his clubhouse presence.

The Alex Rodriguez Story that did NOT Break This Week

Remember earlier in the week when news broke, twitter broke and the internet as a whole broke when Alex Rodriguez was reported to be working out with Barry Bonds? Well I dug deeper into that story recently and I found out that there was a bit of news, a nugget as my good friend from Bleeding Yankee Blue Robert Casey would say, that no one seems to be reporting on. While Alex is in San Rafael, California working out with Barry Bonds and taking batting practice at the Future Prospects batting cages he is also working out with former teammate Edgar Martinez.

Why was the longtime Seattle Mariners DH and probably Hall of Fame player not mentioned in the original article about Rodriguez and Bonds? It’s simple, it doesn’t garner clicks. Honestly I probably won’t get many views for this post but I don’t care frankly, it’s the news and I feel compelled to report on it COMPLETELY. Again quoting Mr. Casey from BYB when I say “get it right, not get it first.”
