Meet the 2019 Yankees: Chance Adams

One of my favorite Yankees prospects coming through the system was and is Chance Adams. Adams was drafted as a relief pitcher and was converted to the starting role down in the Minor Leagues with varying degrees of success. Chance took off as a starter but fell on hard times at the end of the 2017 season and throughout the 2018 campaign as well. I, personally, am not ready to give up on such a promising arm and I fully expect him to bounce back here in 2019 as a starter for the Yankees. Let’s meet him, Mr. Chance Adams.

Chance Adams, 24-years old, is a right-handed starting pitcher out of the New York Yankees organization. Adams’s repertoire consists of a 93 MPH four-same fastball, a 79 MPH curveball, an 85 MPH slider, and a rarely thrown 85 MPH changeup. Adams’ fastball is considered to be average, with little movement, and is used as a pitch-to-contact pitch rather than to strike out opposing batters. Adams uses his slider to generate groundballs to get the majority of his outs. Adams is 6’1” and weighs in at 220 lbs., unless of course he is sporting that impressive beard that he was seen with during the offseason. That has to add a pound or two, you would think.

Chance Adams, no middle name like myself, was born on August 10, 1994 in Scottsdale, Arizona where he attended Chaparral High School. Adams played college baseball at Yavapai College for two years before transferring to Dallas Baptist University. After one year there, the New York Yankees drafted the right-hander in the fifth round of the 2015 MLB First Year Players Draft. Adams made his professional debut with the Staten Island Yankees and finished his first professional season with the High-A Tampa Yankees.

Adams was converted into a starting pitcher beginning in 2016 and saw immediate results from the conversion. Adams started the 2016 season with a 5-0 record with a 2.65 ERA in 12 games before being promoted to Double-A with the Trenton Thunder. Adams finished the season in Trenton with an 8-1 record and a 2.07 ERA. Adams continued to destroy AA pitching in 2017 and quickly earned a promotion to Triple-A before finishing the season with a combined 15-5 record and a 2.45 ERA in 150.1 innings pitched.

Adams would struggle for a lot of the 2018 season, but he was called up to make his MLB debut against the Boston Red Sox inside Fenway Park on August 4. Now, Adams will look to build on the positives from last season and move forward in his path back towards the big-league level. I’m not ready to give up on you Chance, and I’m sure there’s plenty of fans backing you that feel the exact same way as I do. Good luck to you this season and I look forward to seeing you back in the Bronx at some point here in 2019.

DJ LeMahieu and Hitting Inside Yankee Stadium (And Outside of Coors Field)

The New York Yankees signed second baseman and former Colorado Rockies hitter DJ LeMahieu today to a two-year deal rumored to be around $24 million. Presumably, LeMahieu will be the Yankees starting second baseman on Opening Day 2019, assuming health of course, but New York has already been quite vocal about DJ’s ability to play all over the infield. The Yankees pretty much know what they are going to get from LeMahieu defensively, DJ is a multiple-time Gold Glove winner as well as a 2018 Fielding Bible Award winner at second base in the National League, but do they know what they are going to get from their new second baseman offensively? Do the fans who are already crucifying LeMahieu and Yankees GM Brian Cashman know what they are going to get from LeMahieu offensively, aside from his splits inside Coors Field? No, they don’t, but thanks to Baseball Reference and Fangraphs we can make an educated guess at what to expect from the latest “DJ” inside the Yankees infield.

 Looking at LeMahieu’s spray chart and hit chart, courtesy of Fangraphs, you can see that DJ has surprising fly ball and line drive power to all fields, but especially to right field. This is especially important for a player that plays 81 of his games in the Bronx and inside Yankee Stadium. Many fans were quick to point out LeMahieu’s splits at home and away from Colorado’s Coors Field, but none of them even considered what it would be like hitting in the traditionally hitting friendly stadiums throughout the AL East.

 Yes, DJ LeMahieu benefited from hitting inside Coors Field for 81 games a season, but do you really think he benefited just as much hitting inside San Francisco’s spacious AT&T Park? What about San Diego’s Petco Park? I would think these stadiums would hurt his road stats more than they would help him. Equally, I would think playing those 10-12 games in each stadium inside Boston’s Fenway Park, Baltimore’s Oriole Park in Camden Yards, Tropicana Field down in Tampa, and the Rogers Centre in Toronto would help him tremendously with his home/road splits. Keep in mind, the below spreadsheet does not factor in the team’s performance and talent levels, obviously facing a stacked Boston Red Sox team is different than facing a 96-loss San Diego Padres team in 2018, but it only factors in the dimensions of every park and projects what he could do in 2019. While we are on the subject, though, the AL East won a combined 418 games (including the Yankees 100 wins which takes it down to 318 wins as LeMahieu is now a Yankee) while the NL West won a combined 404 games (including 91 by the Rockies bringing the number down to 313 wins) which goes to show you the potential level of competition LeMahieu may face in 2019 in the AL East. Teams like San Diego, San Francisco, and the Dodgers are all trying to get better while LeMahieu arrived just in time for a rebuild down in Baltimore and Toronto, with Tampa Bay on the cusp of competing again in my opinion.

As you can see, and I tried to keep this as simple as I could for simplicity’s sake, LeMahieu will surely benefit from playing in smaller ballparks throughout the AL East Division, including Yankee Stadium where he can torment opposing pitchers by using the short porch in right field. Yes, despite what the dimensions say the ball really flies out of and carries inside Coors Field, but at the same time we all know, again despite the dimensions, that AT&T Park and that huge wall in right field as well as Petco Park play a lot bigger than what the dimensions may suggest. In my opinion, keeping in mind that LeMahieu not only has to stay healthy but also has to put the barrel of the bat on the ball, what DJ loses by playing outside of Coors Field he will more than make up playing inside Yankee Stadium and the other four ballparks in the AL East.

Yes, LeMahieu has some ugly stats away from Coors Field, but that doesn’t mean that we are automatically going to see that player with the Yankees in 2019. You also have to factor in that LeMahieu will not only be playing his home games inside Yankee Stadium, but that he will also be playing his road games in traditionally hitter-friendly ballparks within the AL East. LeMahieu, and the New York Yankees, will be fine. Yankees fans have to know that, and they have to truly believe it as well.

Put me down for 20 HR and 100 RBI.

Didi Gregorius, CC Sabathia and Sonny Gray Updates

We aren't even to the World Series yet, but the New York Yankees are already dominating the offseason and hot stove news.

This week we learned that shortstop Didi Gregorius will need Tommy John surgery this offseason and will miss an undetermined amount of time in 2019. Didi injured the ulnar collateral ligament in his arm during the American League Division Series against the Boston Red Sox on a ground ball in Fenway Park. It sounds like right now Gleyber Torres, who missed time last season because of Tommy John surgery, will slide in to replace Didi at shortstop. Then again, Bubba Crosby will be the team's starting center fielder in 2005 as well.

CC Sabathia underwent a routine knee surgery this week as well, presumably just a cleanup operation not unlike the procedure he had during the offseason of 2016. If he chooses to, the knee surgery will not keep Sabathia out any time during the 2019 season.

Finally, the Yankees have already announced that they will shop RHP Sonny Gray this winter. I can't imagine they will get much in return for the free agent after the 2019 season, but if Cashman does get a nice haul for him he will forever be known as simple "The Wizard."

ALDS Game Two Thread: New York Yankees @ Boston Red Sox

ALDS Game Two Preview: New York Yankees @ Boston Red Sox

The New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox will continue the American League Division Series tonight inside historic Fenway Park with the second game of this best-of-five series. In the start tonight the Yankees will send Masahiro Tanaka out to the mound to face off with David Price for the Red Sox. Tanaka is out for Red Sox blood while Price is just merely looking to survive. It should be a fun one, so let’s get to it here in Boston.

Tanaka struggled in each of his last two starts before the end of the season, but tonight the right-hander heads into Fenway Park on extra rest. Tanaka gave up eight runs in eight innings pitched combined in his last two starts to post an ugly 9.00 ERA. Tanaka has been a much better pitcher in the postseason though boasting a career 1.44 ERA in four career playoff starts.

Price was great in the second half of the 2018 season posting a 6-1 record with a 2.25 ERA in 11 starts after the All-Star Break. The one blip on the radar? A start against the Yankees on September 19 inside Yankee Stadium that saw the left-hander allow six runs in 5.1 IP of work. Price also pitched against the Yankees on August 5^th inside Fenway Park and allowed two runs in six innings of work in a no-decision. Price has a career 5.03 ERA in the postseason.

ALDS Game One Preview: New York Yankees @ Boston Red Sox

The New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox will kick off the American League Division Series tonight inside historic Fenway Park. The Boston Red Sox won a whopping 108 games here in 2018 while the New York Yankees finished with 100 victories on the nose which should make for an intense five-game matchup. In the opener of the series the Yankees will send JA Happ to the mound looking to once again neutralize the Red Sox while Boston will counter with their ace, Chris Sale. It’s the playoffs, baby, so let’s get to it here in chowdah town.

Happ was held back from the American League Wild Card Game because of the possibility of him pitching against the Boston Red Sox twice in a potential five-game series. Manager Aaron Boone went with the long game strategy with his decision to pitch Luis Severino on Wednesday night and thus far it has worked according to plan. The first of Happ’s two potential ALDS matchups with the Red Sox comes tonight inside Fenway Park.

Sale was great against the Yankees in two starts this season against New York allowing just one run with 19 strikeouts in a combined 13 innings pitched. That was the regular season though and all that, plus about $15, will get you inside Fenway Park tonight is a beer to wash away your sorrows. Sale has pitched twice in the ALDS as a member of the Red Sox and has lost each of those games last season against the Houston Astros.

Hello… WE GOT BOSTON!

Good morning Yankees family and welcome back to the blog. Unless you have been living under a rock you know that the New York Yankees defeated the Oakland Athletics on Wednesday night in the Bronx to advance to the American League Division Series. Throughout the game I counted down the remaining outs in the game by saying “ X OUTS TILL BOSTON!” Well, 27 outs later and WE GOT BOSTON! The American League Division Series begins tonight inside Fenway Park in not only the fiercest rivalry in all of Major League Baseball history, but also in a matchup that puts a pair of 100-game winners head-to-head in a five-game series. I’m confident, I’m excited, and I’m ready. Let’s do this.

And baby, thank you for everything you are and for being you. Not many would stick by my side while I jump up and down at an Aaron Judge home run and not many would let me smack their butt every time Luis Severino struck out a batter, but you did… because you’re you, and I love you for it. Thank you, my good luck charm!

This Day In New York Yankees History 10/2: Don Mattingly The Hit Man

Don Mattingly was the one bright spot for the New York Yankees in the 1980's and early 1990's and on this day in 1986 set a new team record for hits in a season with 232. Mattingly passed Earl Combs team record which was set in 1927 and would finish the season with a league leading 238 hits.


The reigning and defending World Series champion New York Yankees played the Boston Red Sox in a one game playoff on this day in 1978 in Fenway Park. We all know what happened, Bucky F'in Dent happened.


The Yankees are known for winning World Series championships but many fans forget that New York had plenty of years where things didn’t exactly go as planned. On this day in 1966 the Yankees would beat the Chicago White Sox 2-0 but would still finish a half game behind the Boston Red Sox for last place in the American League. New York finished with a 70-89 record and fell 26.5 games behind the Baltimore Orioles. This was the first Yankees club to finish in last place in the American League since 1912.


Speaking of winning World Series on this day in 1936 the Yankees would beat the Giants in Game 2 of the World Series by the score of 18-4. That was then and still is now the largest lopsided victory in the history of the Fall Classic.


Finally on this day in 1932 and on this day in Yankees World Series history the team won their 12th consecutive World Series game as they swept the Chicago Cubs. This would mark the third consecutive World Series sweep the Bombers would achieve.

This Day In New York Yankees History 8/18: Longest Nine Inning Game In MLB History

In the early to mid 2000's the New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox played some of the most bitter, the most entertaining, and some of the longest games in the history of the game of baseball. The Yankees and the Red Sox played the longest nine inning game in Major League history on this day in 2006 when the Yankees would beat the Red Sox 14-11. The Yankees completed a day and night double header sweep in Fenway Park and the second game took a cool four hours and 45 minutes to play. A team scored in nine of the 18 half innings and combined for 34 hits.

Also on this day in 1989 Bucky Dent replaced Dallas Green as the Yankees manager. This would mark the 17th time the Yankees had changed managers during George Steinbrenner's 17 year tenure as the Yankees owner. The Yankees were in 5th place at the time with a 56-65 record.

Finally on this day in 1940 Yankees first baseman Lou Gehrig and roommate Bill Dickey filed a suit against the New York Daily News. Jimmy Powers, the sports editor for the Sunday New York Daily News, suggested the Yankees poor play this season was to blame for a mass polio epidemic that the team contracted from Gehrig. In the end the newspaper retracted its statement and apologized to the Iron Horse.

Game Preview: New York Yankees @ Boston Red Sox 8/4

The New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox are back at it again this afternoon inside Fenway Park in the third of their four-game weekend set in Boston. Could the Yankees potentially get a glimpse into their future this afternoon? Only time will tell, but for today’s start the Yankees will call up RHP Chance Adams to make his MLB debut in place of JA Happ while the Red Sox will counter with a familiar face to the Bombers in former Yankees pitcher Nathan Eovaldi. Let’s get to it here in Boston’s historic Fenway Park, home of the Green Monstah.

Adams will make his MLB debut this afternoon for the Yankees in place of JA Happ who had contracted hand, foot and mouth disease. Adams has struggled some in the minor leagues this season for the Yankees and at Triple-A in general, but will get the chance, no pun intended, to make all of that go away with a strong start this afternoon in Beantown.

Eovaldi will once again see the greatest rivalry in the history of Major League Baseball, but this time from the side of the Boston Red Sox. Eovaldi was a pitcher for the Yankees in 2015 and 2016 but was recently traded to the Red Sox from the Rays before the trade deadline.

Hello… Finally Time to Rant About Sonny Gray

Good morning Yankees family. Where am I? More like, where have I been? Let’s cross that bridge before we completely burn the bridge connecting my fandom to Sonny Gray. Work, that’s where I have been. There is a lot changing at my job right now and a lot of moving parts, both of which I have been fully involved in. I simply haven’t had the time to scratch my head let alone to write much, although I have been trying to keep up with as much as I can on Twitter, so for that I apologize.

Now, Sonny Gray and that smug look and smile on his face after letting a Double-A team and Adam Jones knock him out of a start in the third inning the other night. You do not know how bad I wanted to be on that field or in that dugout with him after he came out of the game. That right there was the final straw for me as a fan and defender of Sonny Gray. I’m done, bridge is burnt and then he pissed on it. That’s not the embodiment of a Yankee in my opinion, to smile and laugh while the team is potentially in the midst of a free fall because you, Mr. Gray and others, are not doing your job and living up to your paychecks. Period.

Go smile in the clubhouse, don’t do it as you leave the field. You don’t give a shit, that much is clear, but we, the fans, do. Respect that as most of us have respected you, until now. Asshat, Sonny Gray is a tool.

This Day in New York Yankees History 6/19: AROD3K

Congratulations went out to Alex Rodriguez on this day in 2015 as the Yankees designated hitter hit his 3,000th hit of his major league career. In the first inning Rodriguez stepped up to the plate against the Detroit Tigers starting pitcher Justin Verlander and clobbered an opposite field home run to right field for the historic hit. Alex became just the third player in the history of the game to hit a home run for his 3000th hit joining Wade Boggs (Tampa Bay Rays) and Derek Jeter (New York Yankees) all-time. Congratulations once again to A Rod from all Yankees fans and from everyone here at The Greedy Pinstripes.



Also on this day in 1950 Joe DiMaggio had a two hit day and collected his 2,000th hit of his career. DiMaggio had an RBI single in the third inning and had another RBI single in the seventh inning to reach the milestone. The Yankees would beat the Indians 8-2 in DiMaggio's 1,537th game of his career.

For all the fans growing up in my generation to have a three strikeout game for a batter is something that happens once or twice a week, but it didn't happen all that much by Joe DiMaggio. On this day in 1942 DiMaggio struck out three times in a game for the first and only time in his 1,787 game career. The Indians Mel Harder is the pitcher that will forever go down in history in a 5-4 victory for Cleveland at Cleveland Stadium.


Also on this day in 1921 Babe Ruth vaulted himself into second place on the career list for home runs. Ruth would hit his 127th home run helping the Yankees beat the Red Sox in Fenway Park 7-6 in 10 innings. Ruth would pass Sam Thompson on the All-Time list and would find himself just 11 home runs away from the All-Time record holder Roger Connor.

This Day In New York Yankees History 5/18: Joe Torre Returns

On this day in 1999 after missing the team's first 36 games Joe Torre returns to the Yankees dugout to manage his first game of the season. Torre missed the first month and a half due to a successful surgery for prostate cancer. The Yankees would lose the game 6-3 against the Boston Red Sox but Torre would receive a two minute standing ovation from the Fenway Park crowd when the scoreboard lights up welcoming him home.

This Day in New York Yankees History 4/24: David Ortiz Yankee Stadium Jersey Sold!

On this day in 2008 the jersey that was hidden in the cement during construction at the new Yankee Stadium was auctioned off to help the Jimmy Fund charity and fetched $175,100. The winning bidder out of 282 bidders was Kevin Meehan a Mendon, Mass. resident and owner of imperialcars.com.


Also on this day in 1987 Rickey Henderson became the first batter to ever hit a home run off of two 300 game winners in the same game. Henderson hit a solo home run in the 8th inning off Phil Niekro and would hit a two run home run in the ninth inning off Steve Carlton to help the Yankees beat the Indians 6-5.


Also on this day in 1923 President Warren G. Harding witnessed the first shutout ever thrown at Yankee Stadium. The avid baseball fan and chain smoking president saw Babe Ruth hit a home run in the contest but was ultimately disappointed when his Washington Senators lost 4-0.


Finally on this day in 1917 Yankee pitcher George Mogridge throws a no hitter against the Boston Red Sox in Fenway Park. This is the first no hitter in Yankees franchise history and the first ever thrown at Fenway Park.

This Day in New York Yankees History 4/20: Ivan Nova Makes Yankees History

On this day in 2012 Yankees RHP Ivan Nova passed a few notable starting pitchers in Yankees history when he won his 15th straight decision of the season. The Yankees beat the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park on this day in 2012 and moved Nova ahead of Whitey Ford (1961) and Steve Sundra (1938-1939). This win set Nova one behind Roger Clemens for the franchise record in consecutive decisions won.

On this day in 1988 Claudell Washington hit the Yankees 10,000th home run in franchise history as a pinch hitter. This total was the most in the major leagues and came off Minnesota's pitcher Jeff Reardon in the top of the ninth inning in a Yankees victory.

On this day in 1912, after two days of rain, the first ever game is finally played at Fenway Park in Boston. Of course the first game in the historic stadium was with the New York Highlanders, soon to be the Yankees, and a Red Sox victory 7-6 in 11 innings.

Game Preview: New York Yankees @ Detroit Tigers 4/13

The New York Yankees are out of Boston and heading to Detroit to begin a three-game weekend set with the Detroit Tigers this weekend inside Comerica Park. The Tigers are in the midst of a total rebuild giving the Yankees a huge advantage on paper, but if the Tampa Bay Rays and Baltimore Orioles have taught us anything this season thus far it is that the games are unfortunately not played on paper. They are played in real life, and in real life the Yankees have to put in the work in order to win. Given that task for the Yankees tonight is Jordan Montgomery taking CC Sabathia’s turn in the rotation while the Tigers give the ball to Mike Fiers. Should be a good one, let’s get to it.

Montgomery was not sharp in his last start against the Baltimore Orioles allowing a career-high 10 hits in 4.1 innings of work. Montgomery allowed four runs as well in a no-decision inside Yankee Stadium. This will mark the first time in his career that the young Yankees left-hander will face the Detroit Tigers. 

Fiers was great in his Tigers debut last weekend against the Chicago White Sox and will look to replicate that tonight for Detroit against the Bronx Bombers. In that start Fiera pitched six scoreless innings allowing just three hits with six strikeouts in the victory, all despite his velocity being 90 MPH or below in each of his pitches in the start.
