Although the Cubs in 1906 started the season 100-32 which was far better than the Yankees record.

Also on this day in 1993 Jim Abbott, the Yankees starting pitcher that was born with only one hand, throws a no hitter to beat the California Angels by the score of 4-0. Abbott was the first Yankees pitcher to throw a no hitter in the decade even though he was born without a right hand. Indians leadoff hitter Kenny Lofton was loudly booed by the Yankee Stadium crowd for fouling off a bunt attempt in his last at bat.

Also on this day in 1991 Major League Baseball votes to eliminate the distinction between the number of games played in a league's schedule when it comes to the all-time single season home run mark. The vote takes away the asterisk that kept Roger Maris from the top spot and bumped Babe Ruth to the second hole with 60 home runs in a season.


Finally on this day in 1906 the New York Highlanders, formerly the Baltimore Orioles and soon to be the New York Yankees, beat the Boston Americans 1-0 to finally earn a day off. The Highlanders completed a grueling five consecutive double headers in six days trip and swept them all going 10-0 during the streak.

The Yankees made a day of it on this day in 1938 with a pair of historic milestones that happened on this day. First the Yankees All Star outfielder Joe DiMaggio would hit three consecutive triples in the first game of a double header with the Cleveland Indians. The Yankees would win Game 1 by the score of 8-7 but it was the second game that truly made history.

Monte Pearson became the first pitcher to ever throw a no hitter inside the House that Ruth Built. Pearson faces the minimum 27 batters thanks to a pair of double plays. The Yankees would sweep the double header and win the game 13-0 over the Indians for the Yankees 10th consecutive victory.

On this day in 2000 the Yankees swept the New York Mets in the first double ballpark doubleheader since 1903 with a pair of 4-2 victories. The first game was won by the Yankees 4-2 in Shea Stadium and the night cap was won in Yankee Stadium by that same 4-2 score. You can also remember this day as the day Mike Piazza was hospitalized after being hit by a pitch by the Yankees Roger Clemens. Dwight "Doc" Gooden also got his first win at Shea since 1994 in the first contest.


Also on this day in 1947 the Yankees rookie right hander Spec Shea becomes the first rookie to win an All Star Game. The 26 year old throws three innings in the American League's 2-1 victory in Chicago's Wrigley Field. Shea would deal with sore and dead arm issues after the game that would severely hamper his season and career with the Yankees.



Too many times in today's game we have seen Major League Baseball change their rules to negatively affect or even hurt the New York Yankees. You can look at things like the luxury tax, international spending caps, draft slot recommendations and penalties, the fact that the Kansas City Athletics couldn't trade any players to the Yankees for 18 months after trading one player to New York, and the limitation on innings pitched in an All Star Game as many cases. The latter came as a result of the Yankees Lefty Gomez throwing six outstanding innings in the 1935 All Star Game leading the American League to their third consecutive victory over the NL by the score of 4-1. After the game the rule that no pitcher can throw more than three innings unless the game goes to extra innings will be implemented.

This Day in New York Yankees History 5/30: A Rod in the Middle of a Controversy

On this day in 2007 in Toronto a Jorge Posada pop out falls in between Howie Clark and John McDonald allowing Alex Rodriguez to score on the play. A Rod yelled that he got it while running by and tricked both the Blue Jays infielders in a "Bush League" move.


Also on this day in 2001 when the Yankees and Red Sox rivalry was possibly at its highest and Pedro Martinez spoke up about the Curse of the Bambino? If you don't it was after Martinez ended a streak of five straight losses against New York and was making light of the curse. Martinez states that he wished someone would wake up Babe Ruth so he could drill him with a pitch. Long story short the Red Sox would not beat the Yankees again during the final seven meetings of the 2001 season. But there was no curse, the Red Sox just sucked for 86 years... right.


Also on this day in 1992 the Yankees Scott Sanderson beat the Milwaukee Brewers 8-1 to become the ninth pitcher to defeat all 26 teams in the major leagues at the time. Sanderson joins Nolan Ryan, Tommy John, Don Sutton, Mike Torrez, Rick Wise, Gaylord Perry, Doyle Alexander, and Goose Gossage with the feat.


Also on this day in 1956 Mickey Mantle came within 18 inches of becoming the first player to hit a home run out of Yankee Stadium. The blast came off the Washington Senators Pedro Ramos and the ball was still climbing when it hit the facade in the upper right field stands.


Also on this day in 1938 the Yankees set a new record for attendance at Yankee Stadium drawing 81,841 fans in a double header with the Boston Red Sox. The Yankees would win both games sweeping the Red Sox in the double bill.


Also on this day in 1935 Babe Ruth, a member of the Boston Braves, plays in his last major league game of his career. Ruth, at Baker Bowl, does not get in a hit in his first inning at bat against the Phillies. On June 2 of that year the former Yankee All Star and super star would call it a career officially.


Also on this day in 1934 the Yankees Ben Chapman broke up Earl Whitehill's no hitter in the bottom of the ninth inning at Yankee Stadium. This is significant because in the 1933 season Chapman, albeit provoked, hit Whitehill with a punch in the passageway causing a 20 minute brawl that needed the police to restore order. I guess he broke something up twice, huh?


Finally on this day in 1932 the New York Yankees honored former manager Miller Huggins in a pre-game ceremony. The former Yankees manager died near the end of last season and had received a plaque in his memory. The Yankees would sweep both games in the double header with the Boston Red Sox.

GAME ONE Game Preview: New York Yankees @ Baltimore Orioles 10/3

Welcome to October baseball Yankees family and welcome to a series that is not against either the Chicago White Sox or the Boston Red Sox. A show of hands if you’re reading this and you’re happy that the Yankees and the Red Sox are done playing head-to-head in 2015? Me too. The Yankees enter their final three games of the regular season with the Wild Card locked up and a postseason game in the Bronx looming, now their biggest battle will be with Mother Nature. Today the Yankees are scheduled to send Ivan Nova to the mound in the first game of the double-header to face off against Wei-Yin Chen for the Orioles. The game will be played at 12:05 pm ET and can be seen on the YES Network and MLB TV.

• Nova has looked great since his return to the Yankees starting rotation and may be pitching for his position on the team and with the franchise in 2016. The Yankees have a plethora of names to fill the 2016 starting rotation and it may become a numbers game this winter, a numbers game that Nova doesn't want to lose.

• Chen will be making his final start of the season tonight and possibly his last start in a Baltimore Orioles uniform as he looks to hit free agency on a high note. Chen has had his best Major League season at the best possible time in 2015 posting a 3.35 ERA and 150 strikeouts. Chen is likely to become too expensive for the Orioles budget this winter.

Three more games separate the teams that are planning golfing ventures and trip to Disney with their families from the teams who get the prestige and the honor to play in the postseason. It may be just a Wild Card berth and it may only be for one game but it’s an experience and it’s an accomplishment for these teams no matter the circumstances. Us as fans are spoiled, and we’re entitled to be so, but you have to keep in mind that the human beings behind the uniforms have their same rights and entitlements. Let them celebrate and let them be happy, they earned it. Just not this week. Go Yankees!

Wow, What a Day... Open Thread

The title says it all, wow…. What a day. The New York Yankees and the Toronto Blue Jays played a single admission double header today and will be right back at the ballpark tomorrow afternoon for the finale of this four-game set. Thank God these games don’t mean anything and they are in September so some of the fresh arms and prospects that came up when rosters expanded could get a chance to play. No one wants to see another Moonlight Graham (Google is your friend). But anyway enough with the tongue in cheek commentary and on with the open thread for the night.

I leave you with this song that I have had on repeat for most of the day. I don’t know why, I just like it. The name of the song is “The Hills” and the artist goes by the name “The Weeknd.” That is not a typo, enjoy the rest of your day!

Quick Hit: Surviving 27 Innings in 24 Hours

The New York Yankees and the Toronto Blue Jays are set to play a whopping 27 innings, or more potentially, in less than 24 hours after the game on Thursday night was rained out in the Bronx. This is not going to be an easy feat for either team but it will be especially difficult for the Yankees since they have more to lose. How in the world is manager Joe Girardi going to navigate these three games and not shoot the team in the foot for the remainder of the season or for the foreseeable future?

The good news for the Yankees is that next Thursday they have an off day and face a team they have beat up on all season long in the Tampa Bay Rays Monday through Wednesday. The bad news is this is the last off day for the team until a potential playoff series. New York faces a trio of right-handed starting pitchers this weekend meaning the left-handed bats will be relied upon heavily. Expect Stephen Drew to play in at least two of these games, if not all three, while someone like a Greg Bird may have to play all three contests along with Chase Headley. The pitching is going to be the major concern for both teams though.

Girardi has already stated that he may have to pitch some of his pitchers three games in a row, something he hasn’t done all season, out of necessity. Chris Martin was called up from Triple-A for a fresh arm in the bullpen and he could end up pitching two or three nights if need be along with the trio of Chasen Shreve, Dellin Betances and Andrew Miller. Adam Warren may have to be used for multiple innings as well as Chris Capuano just to get the team through and to save somebody, anybody, to pitch against the Rays on Monday.

It’s going to be a grueling grind but if the Yankees can blow out the Jays in one or two of these contests, and trust me the offense is due for a blowout, they may be just fine.

If it feels like we've already done of these today there is probably a good reason for it, we have. Welcome to the second open thread of the day for the second game of the day between the New York Yankees and the Baltimore Orioles. The Yankees will send Bryan Mitchell to the mound for the night cap and he will face off with the Orioles Bud Norris. Why Not Start David Phelps In Game Two?

The New York Yankees were undecided for much of the week on who would start the second game of today’s double header with the Baltimore Orioles before finally deciding on Bryan Mitchell. Manager Joe Girardi even mentioned the possibility of having a bullpen game, which makes sense with expanded rosters and September call ups. With David Phelps being activated today off the disabled list why not just let Phelps start the game?

If the team is willing to throw multiple relief pitchers at the Orioles in the nightcap anyway then what do you have to lose? I like the idea of Phelps testing out the elbow starting off a clean inning without being behind runs, etc. I like the idea of the pressure being off of Phelps so he can simply go out there and air it out and test out the injury. There really isn't much of a difference between him starting the first inning and starting the sixth inning, I get that and understand that, but Phelps is less likely to overthrow and try too hard to make the perfect pitch or blow someone away when the score is 0-0 then it is if New York is behind.

It’s a minor gripe, I know, but it was just on my mind before this double header today so I figured I would share. What say you?
