Group Tickets for Riley Park Club Now Available
Ultra-premium area now available to secure for groups of 10 of more

CHARLESTON, SC – A night at The Joe has been a favorite for groups of all sizes in the twenty year history of Charleston’s storied venue. With the addition of the Riley Park Club, the group experience at the ballpark will be elevated to new heights with breathtaking views of the scenic wetlands, an all-inclusive food and beverage experience, luxury furnishings, and an entirely new way to experience RiverDogs baseball.

Aided by the most significant building update in the history of Riley Park, the Charleston RiverDogs have announced that group tickets for parties of ten or more are now available for the Riley Park Club for the 2017 season.

“We’ve received a great response from the community and local businesses on the Club already,” said RiverDogs President and General Manager Dave Echols. “People around the Charleston community recognize the space as a one-of-a-kind entertainment option, and we expect group tickets to be a popular option at The Joe this year that our fans will really enjoy.”

Group tickets to the Riley Park Club include complimentary beer and wine and a first class food experience from a number of The Indigo Road’s restaurants, catered directly by Mercantile & Mash, including Oak Steakhouse and O-Ku sushi branded specialties. This all-inclusive ticket package is available for $90 with a minimum group size of ten. In addition to groups, fans can experience the Club this year with season ticket and flex voucher options also available.

Featuring a menu on par with the finest Charleston has to offer, the club’s convenient parking options and location right on the banks of the Ashley River make it a venue unique to anything available in the Lowcountry.

Designed by Charleston-based architectural firm LS3P in collaboration with BallparkDesignAssociates, the Club Level is being built by Mashburn Construction on the first base side of The Joe. The Club's interior will feature lounge seating steeped in Lowcountry elegance, a drink rail overlooking the field of play, and padded, stadium-style seats on the exterior. Patrons will enjoy breathtaking sunset views over the Ashley River wetlands through floor-to-ceiling glass encompassing the Club, which will extend over the marsh to accentuate one of the best vistas in Minor League Baseball.

Construction of the Club is expected to be completed by early March, in time to host open houses and inaugural events prior to the RiverDogs 2017 baseball season.

RiverDogs season tickets, half-season ticket packages and mini plans are now available for the 2017 campaign. RiverDogs, MiLB Make Contribution to SC Based Warrior Surf Foundation

RiverDogs, MiLB Make Contribution to SC Based Warrior Surf Foundation
Local charity that aids veterans to receive donation in honor of the RiverDogs

CHARLESTON, SC –Military families and baseball go hand-in-hand. For their continued efforts to support the local military community, the Charleston RiverDogs will have a contribution to the Warrior Surf Foundation donated on their behalf from Minor League Baseball after receiving the inaugural Chuck Murphy Patriot Award at the Baseball Winter Meetings.

“On behalf of Minor League Baseball Charities, it is an honor to present this donation on behalf of the Charleston RiverDogs to the Warrior Surf Foundation,” said Minor League Baseball President & CEO Pat O’Conner. “The Warrior Surf Foundation was created by veterans for veterans and provides some of America’s true heroes the opportunity to reintegrate themselves back into life after serving our country. They are a worthy organization and I commend them on their efforts to better the lives of Armed Forces veterans.”

As part of their recognition for the newly minted award, MiLB will contribute $2,500 in the RiverDogs’ name to the South Carolina-based nonprofit that serves veterans dealing with post-combat mental health issues.

“On behalf of the Warrior Surf Foundation we would like to thank the Charleston RiverDogs and Minor League Baseball for their donation. Our program can only succeed with the help of our community. We are honored to have been chosen and feel great joy that RiverDogs entrusted us with the donation and truly support our cause,” said Andy Manzi, President and Co-Founder of the Warrior Surf Foundation “We are a small organization and every dollar counts. Warrior Surf will invest the received donation on our surf program which includes surf boards, wet suits, rash guards, and safety equipment. All of which is costly but necessary for our veterans and their families to succeed in the water.”

Founded in Folly Beach in May 2015, the Warrior Surf Foundation is committed to bringing warriors and their families together to promote mental and physical well-being by exposing them to the unique experience of surfing. In just their first year, the WSF provided services to more than 90 veterans and active duty service members through their weekend surf camps.

“We’re thrilled to have a contribution made in our name to this worthy cause,” said RiverDogs President and General Manager Dave Echols. “The fact that this donation comes as part of our recognition of the Patriot Award is a testament to Minor League Baseball’s commitment to serving veterans.”

As the South Atlantic League’s nominee for the Patriot Award, the RiverDogs continued to go beyond paying their respects to the Lowcountry’s strong military family in 2016. The club hosted three Military Appreciation nights during the season, continued their support of the Wounded Warrior Corps on “Red Shirt Fridays” where fans wore red in their support of the military, and honored a military family of the game each night at The Joe. Also in 2016, the RiverDogs hired five homeless military veterans for their stadium clean-up crew in the wake of the dissolution of Charleston's Tent City, and hired a current Air Force reservist as a member of the sales staff. The RiverDogs employ more than 30 military veterans on their gameday operation.

The Patriot Award is named in honor of the longtime Florida State League president and U.S. Army veteran who passed away Feb. 21, 2015, at the age of 83. Murphy retired as a Lieutenant Colonel after 21 years in the U.S. Army, broke into professional baseball in 1975 and led the Florida State League from 1990 until his passing. He received the Warren Giles Award for outstanding service as a league president in both 2011 and 1991, and the Friends of Baseball Chapel Award in 1994.

RiverDogs season tickets, half-season ticket packages and mini plans are now available for the 2017 campaign. The RiverDogs begin the season on April 6 when they host the Lexington Legends at Joseph P Riley, Jr. Park. Ticket information can be secured by contacting the box office at (843) 577-DOGS (3647) or online at www.riverdogs.com.

Press Release: Chris Gittens, Others SAL Postseason Honorees

RiverDogs First Baseman Chris Gittens, Pitching Coach Justin Pope among SAL Postseason All-Star Honorees
Gittens four shy of the Charleston franchise record for home runs, RiverDogs pitching staff has set franchise record for strikeouts under guidance of Pope

CHARLESTON, SC –With less than two weeks remaining in the regular season, the Charleston RiverDogs have already had one of their most memorable seasons to date. Clinching their first playoff berth in 11 seasons with a 42-27 first half, the RiverDogs are gearing up for the South Atlantic League divisional round beginning on Wednesday, September 7. With postseason baseball almost upon the Lowcountry, RiverDogs first baseman/designated hitter Chris Gittens was named to the SAL Postseason All-Star team as the designated hitter while pitching coach Justin Pope also garnered All-Star accolades as announced by the league office on Tuesday.

Gittens becomes the first postseason all-star player for the RiverDogs since IF Rob Lyerly was Charleston’s lone representative in 2010 and Pope becomes the first RiverDogs coach to be selected to a postseason All-Star team in the Riley Park era. It is just the second time since 1997 that the RiverDogs have had two or more of their members selected to the Postseason All-Star team with three RiverDogs players collecting All-Star honors in 2009 (RHP David Phelps, OF Melky Mesa, IF Corban Joseph).

Gittens, 22, has been the heartbeat in the middle of the RiverDogs’ lineup since Opening Day. The Sherman, TX native is currently hitting .253/.359/.478 with 21 homers that ranks second in the South Atlantic League while driving in a team-high 70 runs. With seven games remaining in the regular season, Gittens is four home runs shy of Charleston’s single-season franchise record and three behind the league leader, Jose Pujols, who has 24 long balls for Lakewood. After making a diving stop on Friday night in Hickory and sustaining a lower body injury, the 6’4”, 250 pound slugger was placed on the 7-day disabled list on Saturday.

“You are always looking for a power first baseman and we certainly have one with Gittens,” said RiverDogs manager Luis Dorante. “He’s had his up and downs but he’s one of those guys that keeps his composure and tries to work through it and shows maturity to get through that. The Yankees are definitely thinking about this kid down the road.”

Gittens’ most impressive game came on the road in West Virginia on June 16 when the native Texan smashed three home runs, one of just two hitters in the league to complete the trifecta, while going 3-for-5 with a career-high six RBI. Along with his eye-popping power, the Yankees’ former 12th round pick in 2014 has shown solid plate discipline, reaching base safely in a league-high 33 straight from April 21-June 2 while drawing 56 walks on the season that ranks fifth in the league.

Pope garners All-Star accolades in his first season as the RiverDogs pitching coach and his seventh in the Yankees organization. The former Yankees minor leaguer has led Charleston to a league best 3.06 ERA with RiverDogs hurlers piling up a franchise record 1,183 strikeouts, already 14 more than the 2011 RiveDogs team still with seven games still remaining. Charleston also leads the league with 15 shutout victories this season, needing just one more to surpass another franchise record accomplished twice (1986 Charleston Rainbows & 1980 Charleston Royals) while also leading the SAL in WHIP (1.17), fewest runs (475) and fewest hits allowed (963).

Along with the success that the Charleston staff has had, Pope has also excelled in moving players up the ladder and maintaining success amongst a record level of turnover. Charleston has seen 36 different pitchers suit up for the RiverDogs this year, the most in the franchise’s history, with 14 different pitchers being called up to High-A Tampa this year. Two players who spent time in Charleston this year have made it up as high as Double-A (RHPs Will Carter and Travis Hissong).

“It’s well deserved,” said Dorante of Pope. “The numbers speak for themselves with the pitching staff that we have that has impressed at this level with guys coming in and going out and it’s not easy to deal with that and Popey has done a tremendous job with that to get guys to fill in, throw strikes and have success. It’s one of the keys to us being in the playoffs.”

Pope comes to the Lowcountry by the way of the Appalachian League where the West Palm Beach, FL native lead the rookie ball Pulaski Yankees to a league best 3.08 staff ERA in 2015. Pope served as the manager of the Short-Season Single-A Staten Island Yankees in the

New York-Penn League from 2012-13 with the Baby Bombers compiling a 64-86 record under his tenure. He previously worked on the Double-A Trenton Thunder staff as the pitching coach in 2011 after beginning his coaching career with Staten Island as the pitching coach in 2010.

Originally selected as the 28th overall pick by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 1st round of the 2001 First-Year Player Draft, Pope accrued a 38-34 record with a 3.34 ERA over eight minor league seasons with the Cardinals (2001-03), Yankees (2003-07), and Phillies (2008) reaching as high as Triple-A. Prior to his professional career, the 6’0” righty attended the University of Central Florida where he was named an All-American after his junior season in 2001. Pope still stands as the Knights’ all-time leader in career wins (32) and strikeouts (335) and was inducted into the University of Central Florida Athletic Hall of Fame in 2013.

The Annual All-Star Team was also highlighted by the selections for Most Outstanding Pitcher, Most Outstanding Major League Prospect and Most Valuable Player. Mitch Keller of the West Virginia Power (Pittsburgh Pirates) was selected as the Most Outstanding Pitcher. Keller has an 8-5 record and an ERA of 2.46 in 23 games. Brendan Rodgers from the Asheville Tourists (Colaorado Rockies) was named the Most Outstanding Major League Prospect. Brian Mundell of the Asheville Tourists was chosen as the Most Valuable Player. Mundell is leading the league in hits (164), extra base hits (72), total bases (265) and runs scored (90) in 129 games, including a SAL and Minor League Baseball record 57 doubles.

Without their All-Star slugger, the RiverDogs wrap up their final homestand of the regular season in a three-game series in a potential SAL Championship preview with the Hagerstown Suns, the Class A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, from August 30-September 1 at The Joe. The RiverDogs will send RHP Daris Vargas (10-6, 2.66) in the opener with Hagerstown starter to be announced. The RiverDogs await their first round playoff opponent with the Rome Braves and Augusta GreenJackets separated by just a half game in the second half standings.

Ticket information for the homestand can be secured by contacting the box office at (843) 577-DOGS (3647) or online at www.riverdogs.com. Tickets for Game 2 of the SAL Divisional Series on Friday, September, 9 at 7:05pm are also available. Press Release: Riverdogs Ask Fans to Vote for 2016 “Top Dog”

RiverDogs Asking Fans to Vote for the
“Top Dog” of 2016
Five candidates announced for fan voted Player of the Year

CHARLESTON, SC – Josh Hamilton, B.J. Upton, Delmon Young, and Jorge Mateo, just some of the names of the RiverDogs greats that once called Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park home. With the 2016 season nearing a close, the RiverDogs will once again open up the floor to the fans to decide who will be elected as Charleston’s “Top Dog” as the fan-voted player of the Year for 2016.

The RiverDogs are having one of their most successful seasons in history, securing the Southern Division first half title with a 42-27 record at the All-Star break to clinch their first playoff berth in over a decade. The club’s success has also been highlighted by a number of stellar individual performances. The RiverDogs are asking fans to vote between five finalists for the RiverDogs’ “Top Dog” of 2016, awarded to the most outstanding player of the season by using the web link HERE. The finalists are LHP Nestor Cortes, first baseman Chris Gittens, center fielder Jeff Hendrix, RHP Christian Morris, and RHP Andrew Schwaab.

Cortes, a 21-year-old lefty out of Hialeah, FL, dominated South Atlantic League hitters since a midseason call up to Charleston on May 6. After yielding one run in a five inning effort against Lakewood on July 18, just his second run allowed in his last 37.2 innings with Charleston, the RiverDogs lefty fell to a 6-2 record while raising his ERA to a 0.79 mark before getting the call up to High-A Tampa. The Yankees’ 36thround pick in 2013 has struck out an impressive 75 batters in 68.1 innings, an average of 9.9 per nine innings, while walking just 15 and opponents hitting a measly .210 against him. Across 13 appearances, eight of those starts, with the RiverDogs, Cortes allowed just six earned runs and never allowed more than one unearned run in any given outing.

After representing the RiverDogs as a South Atlantic League Mid-Season All-Star, Cortes was also called up for a spot relief appearance with Double-A Trenton, logging four innings to pick up the save on June 26 allowing two runs on just a hit before rejoining Charleston. The Cuban-born, native Floridian was also named the South Atlantic League Pitcher of the Week after striking out 12 batters in six innings, giving up no runs, two hits, and one walk in a start against Columbia on May 19.

Gittens, 22, has been the heartbeat in the middle of the RiverDogs’ lineup since opening day. As of August 8, The 6’4”, 250 pound slugger out of Sherman, TX has hit .255/.361/.487 with 17 home runs that ranks second in the league while driving in a team leading 61 runs on the season in 87 games. Also a solid defender at first, the Grayson County College product is also fourth in the league in slugging and averages a home run every 19 at-bats, the best rate in the league.

Gittens’ most impressive game came on the road in West Virginia on June 16 when he smashed three home runs, one of just two three homer performances in the league this year, while going 3-for-5 with a career-high six RBIs. Along with his eye-popping power, the Yankees’ former 12th round pick in 2014 has shown solid plate discipline, reaching base safely in a league high 33 straight from April 21-June 2.

Hendrix, 23, stood in as the spark plug at the top of the RiverDogs order since Opening Day, and impressed enough in his time in Charleston to garner promotion to High-A Tampa. With an already polished defensive game, the Corvallis, Oregon native hit .299/.397/.389 with 16 doubles, a home run, and 25 RBI in 36 games with the RiverDogs before getting the call up on July 17.

The former Oregon State Beaver was named the South Atlantic League Player of the Week when he went 15-for-24 (.625) at the plate with three doubles and five RBIs in six games from May 30-June 6 that included a 5-for-5 day at the plate in Greenville on June 1. Already a polished center fielder, Hendrix went on a tear to finish out his time with the RiverDogs, hitting .427 (38-89) since June to raise his average just a shade under the .300 mark before his call up.

Morris, 22, another mid-season call up to Charleston, has posted All-Star worthy numbers while rounding into form in the second half as the staff’s ace. Morris is having a breakout season in his second year as a pro, boasting a 7-2 record with a 2.45 ERA that ranks first among all qualifying pitchers in the league with 76 strikeouts in 88.0 innings.

The former Indiana Hoosier was named the South Atlantic League Pitcher of the Week for the week of June 6-12 for his performance against the Asheville Tourists on June 9 when he tossed six innings, giving up no runs, just a lone hit, two walks, and 7 strikeouts. The 6’4” righty made his debut with Charleston on April 30, after spending last season in rookie ball and one game with Advanced-A Tampa.

Schwaab, 23, was the linchpin of the dominant Charleston bullpen as the closer since Opening Day before getting a call up to High-A Tampa in mid-July. The former Missouri Tiger went 4-1 with a 1.85 ERA and his 18 saves still ranks second in the SAL. A non-drafted free agent signee by the Yankees in 2015, the side winding closer out of O’Fallon, Missouri struck out 38 batters while walking just eight in his 34 innings with Charleston. The 6’1” righty was named a SAL Mid-Season All-Star and was one of five RiverDogs representatives at the Midsummer Classic in Lexington.

Ticket information for the upcoming homestand and any of the remaining home games can be secured by contacting the box office at (843) 577-DOGS (3647) or online at www.riverdogs.com. RiverDogs playoff tickets for Game 2 of the SAL Divisional Series on Friday, September 9 are now available. Those that can’t make it to the park can follow every pitch of the RiverDogs season on WTMA 1250 AM and streaming online at riverdogs.com.

CHARLESTON, SC– The New York Yankees have announced that RHP Bryan Mitchell will make a rehab start for the Charleston RiverDogs on Monday night against the Rome Braves at 7:05 pm at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.

Mitchell, 25, returns to Charleston after pitching for the RiverDogs in the 2012 season while coming up through the system. Charleston Riverdogs Press Release: The Charleston Hall of Fame

Charleston Baseball Hall of Fame
to Induct Five New Members
on Aug. 25
Class of 2016 includes Mayor Riley, Mike Veeck, Ted Byrne and former Cougars
Chris Campbell, Nick Chigges

CHARLESTON, SC – Former Charleston Mayor Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Charleston, RiverDogs president emeritus Mike Veeck, broadcaster Ted Byrne, and College of Charleston standouts Chris Campbell and Nick Chigges highlight the Charleston Baseball Hall of Fame’s Class of 2016.

Byrne, Campbell and Chigges were selected by fan voting while Riley and Veeck were chosen by the Charleston Baseball Hall of Fame Committee.

The five, which represent the largest class in the 14-year history of the Charleston Baseball Hall of Fame, will be enshrined on August 25prior to the RiverDogs’ home game against the Columbia Fireflies, which begins at 7:05 pm.

Riley, among the nation’s most loved politicians who guided the Holy City for an unprecedented 40 years (Dec. 1975-Jan. 2016), is arguably Charleston’s No. 1 baseball fan. A native Charlestonian, Riley graduated from The Citadel in 1964 and the University of South Carolina School of Law in 1967. Among his many projects as mayor was the completion of a $19 million baseball field on the banks of the Ashley River in which Charleston City Council appropriately named Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park. As mayor, Riley has been honored with numerous citations, including the Order of the Palmetto, South Carolinian of the Year and The National Medal of Arts as presented by President Barack Obama

Veeck, the son of Baseball Hall of Famer Bill Veeck, brought his innovative “Fun Is Good” mantra to the RiverDogs when the club moved from College Park to Riley Park in the late 1990s and has kept that momentum going. Focusing on wholesome, family entertainment with major emphasis on customer and community service, Veeck directed the RiverDogs front office as they continually set attendance records that hovered around the 300,000 per year mark. A master showman and promoter who has been referred to as a “maverick” owner due to his wacky promotions, Veeck is a highly sought-after speaker on the national level.

Byrne, the South Atlantic League’s 1984 Broadcaster of the Year, brought Charleston its first sports talk radio show and has been a sports broadcaster since 1967. He currently is the Operations and Traffic Manager for Kirkman Broadcasting and oversees all six of their radio stations. In 1984 he was named South Carolina’s Broadcaster of the Year. After Hurricane Hugo in 1989, Ted was part of a group that won his industry’s highest award, The Peabody Award, which recognizes distinguished and meritorious public service by radio and television broadcasters. Byrne has been the “voice” of The Citadel and College of Charleston, and has worked TV broadcasts for Fox Sports, SportSouth, Comcast and ESPN. He twice broadcasted the SAL All-Star Game (once in Charleston and once in Columbia), and also did play-by-play for Georgia Southern men's basketball and baseball from 1997-05 before returning to Charleston.

A second baseman who played for CofC from 2004-07, Campbell ranks as the program’s all-time leader in games played, hits, doubles and RBIs. In 2007, Campbell led the nation in RBIs per game with 1.41. His 87 RBIs in 2005 ranked second all-time in Southern Conference history behind CofC’s Matt Leeds’ mark of 88. Campbell’s 290 career RBIs are tied for first in SoCon history, while his 355 career hits are tied for second in the league record books. Campbell was the 2004 SoCon Freshman of the Year, while earning First Team All-SoCon honors in 2005 and Second Team All-Conference accolades in 2004, 2006 and 2007. In 2005, Campbell was named an ABCA First Team All-American, Baseball America Second Team All-American and Collegiate Baseball/Louisville Slugger Third Team All-American. He was selected for the Collegiate Baseball Freshman All-America team in 2004. He helped Charleston to three NCAA Regional appearances and a Super Regional berth in 2006.

College of Charleston’s Chigges was a two-time Southern Conference Pitcher of the Year and collected first team All-Conference accolades in 2006 and 2007. Named co-MVP of the 2006 SoCon Tournament, Chigges earned second team Collegiate Baseball/Louisville Slugger and NCBWA All-America honors in 2006 and second team ABCA All-American recognition in 2007. He had a 31-5 career record and a .861 winning percentage, and when he finished, the 31 wins ranked first all-time at CofC and fifth in SoCon history. He was named to the 2006 Kentucky Regional All-Tournament team after a complete-game, 13-strikeout performance in the win over Ball State in the semifinals. A 2004 member of Collegiate Baseball’s All-America Freshman Team, Chigges was drafted by the NY Yankees and played for the 2008 Charleston RiverDogs.

RiverDogs Again Join Yankees HOPE Week Initiative

Outings planned for July 12-16 throughout the Lowcountry

CHARLESTON, SC – The Charleston RiverDogs are once again proud to partner with their parent organization the New York Yankees for the HOPE Week Initiative. The creative outing runs from July 12-16, as RiverDogs players, coaches and the front office staff will make community service appearances throughout the Lowcountry during the five-day outreach.

This will be the eighth year in which the 27-time World Series Champions Yankees have held their HOPE Week. HOPE is the acronym for “Helping Others Persevere and Excel,” and it will be the fifth time that the RiverDogs bring the concept to the Lowcountry.

Contributing partners and facilitating institutions that are involved include MUSC Children’s Hospital, Wine & Canvas, Groucho’s Deli, and Bohemian Bull.

“We are excited about the opportunity to partner once again with the New York Yankees for such fantastic causes,” said RiverDogs Director of Community Relations Haley Kirchner. “It is a great way for us to continue to be active in our community and to recognize some truly amazing people and organizations.”

“This initiative in which we partner with the Yankees has been part of our external makeup for four years so far,” said President and General Manager Dave Echols. “Part of our overall marketing initiative stems from our being very active in our community, and this actively involves the players, who enjoy it as much as the recipients.”

The RiverDogs will participate in events every day from July 12-16 to garner awareness for the highlighted causes, individuals and organizations. Additionally, every day over the five-day period a different non-profit organization and/or family in need receives an once-in-a-lifetime experience of interaction with RiverDogs players and then an evening of fun at a RiverDogs home game at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.

The RiverDogs and all of the Yankees' affiliates have received a citation from the President's Volunteer Service Award for past years of HOPE Week.

Riverdogs Press Release: Jeff Hendrix SAL Player of the Week

RiverDogs Center Fielder Hendrix Named SAL Player of the Week
Speedy Outfielder Has Torn Up the Competition after stint on the DL

CHARLESTON, SC – The South Atlantic League has announced that RiverDogs outfielder Jeff Hendrix has been named the SAL Player of the Week for the week of May 30-June 5. The Corvallis, OR native batted .625/.667/.750 in six games over the past week, going 15-for-24 while adding three doubles and five RBIs to garner the league’s weekly accolades.

Hendrix’s huge week at the plate was highlighted by a career 5-for-5 night while driving in three key runs to help the RiverDogs snap out of a four game losing streak in a 7-5 comeback win over Greenville on June 1.

After coming off the disabled list on May 28 after a seven day stint off the active roster, Hendrix has been a different hitter at the plate, going 16-for-27 (.593) to bump his batting average up 65 points to a.272, the highest it’s been since the third day of the season. The 22-year old left handed bat has posted a .370 on-base percentage while slugging .352 on the season with one home run and 16 RBI as the RiverDogs’ main leadoff hitter.

Along with his production at the plate, Hendrix has been phenomenal in center field, appearing in 42 games in the field without committing an error.

The Oregon State product was originally selected by the New York Yankees in the 4th round of the 2015 draft after three years with his hometown Beavers where he garnered Pac-12 All-Defensive Team honors in each of his last two seasons in Corvallis.

Hendrix spent his rookie campaign with Short Season Staten Island where he hit .229/.332/.586 with 14 RBIs in 65 games with the Baby Bombers while ranking fifth in the New York-Penn League in runs scored (42).

It is the first league weekly honors for Hendrix in his career, and the second Player/Pitcher of the Week award issued to a Charleston player this season after LHP Nestor Cortes was named the SAL Pitcher of the Week for the week of May 16-22.

The first-place RiverDogs (32-22) will start a brief three-game road stint against the Rome Braves (22-33) starting on Monday night at 7:05pm, before returning to Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park for a seven-game homestand against the Asheville Tourists and Augusta GreenJackets, the two teams locked in second place, 4.5 games behind first-place Charleston in the Southern Division.

Riverdogs Press Release: Charleston Joins MLB’s PLAY BALL Initiative

RiverDogs, Charleston Recreation Department Join in MLB & USA Baseball’s ‘PLAY BALL’ Initiative
Local youth groups to receive introduction to the game while securing tour of Riley Park

CHARLESTON, SC – The Charleston RiverDogs, in conjunction with the Charleston Recreation Department, will participate in Major League Baseball and USA Baseball’s PLAY BALL initiative on three dates this summer.

This new undertaking is being introduced in a committed effort to spark widespread participation in all forms of baseball activities among all age groups, especially youth.

Athletes from three local summer camps connected to the Charleston Recreation Department will be invited to Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park to get an introduction and early-level basic fundamentals in America’s pastime. In addition to learning about the game from RiverDogs players, participants will get a behind-the-scenes tour of The Joe and will be exposed to parts of the ballpark fans typically won't see (that include the underground batting cages, press box, locker rooms, and more).

The groups will then be divided and will rotate between catch on the field and hitting in the batting cages. RiverDogs players will be stationed in the cages and on the field and will work with and hang out with the participants.

Prior to the kids’ departure, there will be an autograph session as well as a guest appearance from everyone’s favorite dog, Charlie T. RiverDog.

The first event is June 14 with the James Island Camp, and the second is set for July 29 with the Downtown City Gym Camp while the final event is August 8 with the Bees Landing Camp in West Ashley. All of the groups that are participating will be selected by the Charleston Recreation Department.

"The purpose of the initiative is just to remind people that you can engage with baseball without having nine guys on each team, uniforms and umpires," said Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred. "There are lots of small games that are ways to play baseball that can be really fun for kids and can really help them develop skills. It creates a day that they'll remember the rest of their lives."

“The City of Charleston is proud to partner in this initiative with our own Charleston RiverDogs,” said Charleston Mayor John Tecklenburg. “We hope that it inspires the love of the game of baseball to the children of our community.”

“The RiverDogs are thrilled to participate in the PLAY BALL initiative and are especially happy to partner with the Charleston Recreation Department,” said RiverDogs President and General Manager Dave Echols. “These sessions are designed to introduce a youngster to baseball or enhance a kid’s love of the game. It will certainly be a memorable moment for the participants and our players alike.”

The PLAY BALL initiative highlights the many ways baseball can be played, including outside of traditionally organized baseball leagues and tournaments, ranging from playing catch, stickball and Wiffle ball to participating in skills competitions like "Pitch, Hit & Run." PlayBall.orgserves as its online home, featuring coaching tips, parent resources and health and safety information. It's also a resource to find out how to gets kids involved in Play Ball activities and get links to youth-related news and events, plus searchable maps for local community leagues.

"The launch of PLAY BALL is a landmark occasion for our sport," said Executive Director and CEO of USA Baseball Paul Seiler. "With the support of Major League Baseball, we are thrilled to take a more active role in the proliferation of our game and offer innovative resources to our national member organizations and their constituents. While the launch of PLAY BALL is the culmination of a lot of hard work, this represents the beginning of our partnership with MLB to grow the game at the grassroots level."

Additionally, MLB and USA Baseball are launching the PLAY BALL Mobile Coaching App, a free tool for coaches at every level that is currently available for download via Google Play and will be coming soon to the Apple App Store. Coaches can access the app as guests, but logging on with PLAY BALL credentials allows users to create customized practice plans, organize team data, and utilize Pitch Smart recommendations and more.
