The Curious Case of the CC Sabathia DL Trip

Good morning everyone and welcome back to the blog. Just a quick hit for you this morning concerning CC Sabathia and his sudden trip to the disabled list… because I’m not buying it. Now before I dive too deep into this I want to preface that I do believe there are processes in place that prevent a team from simply “Phantom DL’ing” someone for no reason. There is protection in place for the teams and there is protection in place for the players, but with the case of CC Sabathia and his troublesome knees it makes you wonder if the Yankees are somehow taking advantage of that.

Sabathia was placed on the disabled list with knee inflammation, a diagnosis that has cost him time a lot recently over the past few seasons in the Bronx, but I wonder just how inflamed the knee really is. I am sure at any given time, given the status of his knees, if there was an MRI or whatever test the Yankees had run on his knee that there would be inflammation in the knee. It is bone-on-bone essentially and inflammation is just going to be a thing that CC has to deal with for the rest of his life, period. It makes you wonder if the Yankees are taking advantage of that and placing him on the disabled list now before the stretch run of the season.

What benefit would the Yankees get by placing CC on the DL with a phantom ailment? Well, looking at the Yankees schedule you see that the Yankees have a couple of days off going forward that may have factored into the decision. CC last pitched on August 12^th against the Texas Rangers firing six innings of one-hit ball in a victory meaning that he would not be in line to start again until August 17^th against the Toronto Blue Jays, a start that Luis Cessa will make according to Aaron Boone. After that start though the Yankees have an off day on August 23^rd (CC’s next scheduled start) giving the Yankees the ability to “skip” his start and let the rest of the rotation pitch on normal rest. The Yankees may have just found a way to manipulate the disabled list process and given CC at least 10 days’ worth of rest while still allowing him to only miss one start against a sub-.500 team.

I am sorry, but something just seems off here. I am not a conspiracy theorist by any means, but this just doesn’t seem right. Look at the way CC pitched in his last start, that is not the way you pitch when your weight-bearing knee is inflamed to the point to where you need to go on the disabled list. It just doesn’t add up. Something else is up here and I think that something else is the Yankees are taking advantage of the system to give CC some extra rest down the stretch.

I’m not saying that I am not okay with it, but I am saying that if it looks like fish… and smells fishy…

Opening Day scheduled for Friday, June 15, against Brooklyn

STATEN ISLAND- The Staten Island Yankees are excited to announce the team's 2018 season schedule. The Baby Bombers kick off another action-packed summer for a 20th season of baseball on Staten Island, and it all begins at Richmond County Bank Ballpark at St. George on Friday, June 15, as cross-bridge rival Brooklyn takes a trip over the Verrazano Bridge.

New for the upcoming season, two of the team’s five Sunday home games (June 17 – Father’s Day and Sept. 2 – Final Regular Season Home Game) will have a 1:30 p.m. first pitch. Also new for 2018, the Staten Island Yankees host a “Businessperson’s Special” with a unique 2 p.m. first pitch on Wednesday, Aug. 22. The Baby Bombers host three Camp Days with two 11 a.m. first pitch dates (Monday, July 16, and Thursday, Aug. 9) and one noon first pitch date (Wednesday, Aug. 1). Standard first pitch times for home games are 4 p.m. on Sundays and 7 p.m. on Monday through Saturday. Gates for Richmond County Bank Ballpark open to fans one hour prior to first pitch.

Along with a few new start times, highlights of the 2018 schedule include games on Father’s Day, Fourth of July, and six home contests against arch-rival Brooklyn.

Key Dates to Look Forward to in 2017

Opening Day 2017 happens on Sunday, April 2^nd when the New York Yankees take on the Tampa Bay Rays inside Tropicana Field in Tampa St. Pete. The 2017 season has a lot of key dates and games this season so I wanted to go over a few and hit the high spots as we prepare for the 2017 regular season to begin. This post is worth keeping bookmarked just in case.

On the same day the Yankees and Rays kick off the 2017 season the Chicago Cubs begin their World Series title defense against the St. Louis Cardinals. Manning center field for those Cardinals? None other than the center fielder who was on the field when the Cubs won their World Series and reversed the curse of the billy goat, Dexter Fowler. That should be fun.

Sunday, May 14^th is Derek Jeter Day in the Bronx as the New York Yankees play host to the Houston Astros inside Yankee Stadium. Before the game the Yankees will unveil a plaque in Monument Park for Jeter while also retiring his #2 jersey on Mother’s Day. That’s a game you definitely do not want to miss.

The All-Star Game is played on Tuesday, July 11 inside Marlins Park in Miami. This will be the first time that the Marlins host the All-Star Game in their 25 season existence so that should be fun as should the Home Run Derby that happens the night before. Giancarlo Stanton sighting anyone?

On Sunday, July 30 we will watch as Hall of Fame inductees Jeff Bagwell, Tim Raines and Ivan “Pudge” Rodriguez get inducted officially into the Hall along with former Commissioner Bud Selig and former Royals and Braves executive John Schuerholz.

The non-waiver trading deadline returns to July 31^st this season after last year the deadline occurred on August 1^st. The revocable trade waiver deadline is still August 31^st, as always.

The final game of the season happens, barring any need for tiebreaker games and such, on October 1^st.

The New York Yankees spring training officially kicks off today with all players reporting to camp so here are a few important dates on the schedule including game times and what television network will be picking up the Grapefruit League games.

New York plays 34 games this spring including an exhibition game on March 31 against the Atlanta Braves in newly opened SunTrust Park in Atlanta. Here is the complete spring televised schedule for the Yankees with all games but the March 23 game against the Tampa Bay Rays able to be seen on the YES Network and MLB TV.

STATEN ISLAND- The Staten Island Yankees are excited to announce the team's 2017 season schedule. The Baby Bombers kick off another action-packed summer at home for a 16th season at the Richmond County Bank Ballpark at St. George on Monday, June 19, against cross-bridge rival the Brooklyn Cyclones. See the attached document for the entire 2017 schedule.

For the first time since 2013, Staten Island will open the season at home on a Monday (June 19) against Brooklyn. The team then returns to the Richmond County Bank Ballpark at St. George on Saturday, June 24, for their first three-game series of the season as they take on division foe the Aberdeen IronBirds.

While fans will have to wait until early 2017 for the promotional schedule, dates such as July 4 vs. the Hudson Valley Renegades and the regular season home finale on Sept. 6 vs. Brooklyn should be games to mark in your calendar.

Heavy Thursday – Sunday game days highlights schedule

CHARLESTON, SC –With two more homestands and the South Atlantic League playoffs right around the corner, the Charleston RiverDogs have announced the 2017 schedule as next year’s 70-game home slate is released.

Marking their 21st season in Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park and the 24th as the RiverDogs, the highlight of the 2017 campaign will be the 11Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday games. Nine contests each on Tuesdays and Wednesdays and only eight on Mondays round out the schedule.

The excitement and fanfare of Opening Night (April 6) and the Independence Day celebration (July 3) are annual top dates and great opportunities to enjoy the fun-filled experience that is widely known as RiverDogs Baseball. There will also be a return of the “Legends in the South” charity alumni baseball game that featured former players from the New York Yankees and Atlanta Braves with a soon to be confirmed date.

“Although the summer is not officially over and we haven’t yet hosted the playoffs, we release our schedule early because we know that our fans like to plan ahead, and many are already scheduling activities for the Summer of 2017,” said President and General Manager Dave Echols. “We have a great schedule for ’17, and we’re already in the planning stages for great promotions, food and fun that fans have come to know as the ‘RiverDogs Baseball Experience.’”

May will be the busiest month at Riley Park as the RiverDogs play at home 18 times, while August features 17 dates and July sees 14.

The season begins with a seven-game homestand (April 6-12) as the RiverDogs host the Lexington Legends for four games and then the Augusta GreenJackets for three. The club will then venture to Rome and Augusta before returning home April 20 with a four-game block against the Asheville Tourists.

RiverDogs fans will become familiar with Augusta the most as they come to Riley Park for a total of 15 games while state-rivals Greenville and Columbia come to Charleston for 11 and 10 games, respectively.

Prior to the season’s opener, the RiverDogs will travel up to Myrtle Beach on April 5 for the second installment of the Battle of the Beaches, a preseason exhibition with the Pelicans at TicketReturn.com Field.

Thunder Announce 2017 Schedule

With just a few weeks of fun remaining in the 2016 Thunder season, the team and the Eastern League announced the first look at the 2017 schedule this afternoon.

The Thunder will begin the 2017 campaign with a seven-game road trip and will celebrate Opening Night at ARM & HAMMER Park onThursday, April 13 against the Portland Sea Dogs (Boston Red Sox).

2017 will feature 10 straight home games against the rivals of the Thunder beginning on May 19 when the Portland Sea Dogs, Reading Fightin Phils (Philadelphia Phillies), and Binghamton Mets (New York Mets) all visit ARM & HAMMER Park. Reading travels to Trenton for three series' in 2017, May 22-25, July 4-6, and September 1-4. In all, the Thunder will host their rivals 23 times in the 2017 season.

The team will play 10 home games in April, 16 in May, 14 in June, 13 in July, 13 in August and four in September. The Thunder play 70 home games against all 11 Eastern League opponents. All affiliates between Eastern League teams and MLB Parent clubs will remain the same as 2016.

Mid-week day games will continue at ARM & HAMMER Park in 2017 with 10:30am "Education Day" games slated for Thursday April 20,Wednesday May 3, and Wednesday May 24. Special "Camp Day" games are scheduled for Wednesday July 26 and Wednesday August 16. The Thunder will also play their annual "Business Person's Special" at 2:00pm on Wednesday August 23 at ARM & HAMMER Park.

The schedule for fireworks dates and promotions for 2017 will be released at a later date.

Postgame Fireworks, the Human Cannonball Propel the Holy City into 20^th Season at Riley Park

CHARLESTON, SC – The Charleston RiverDogs have served up 19 years of fun at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park, and as fans join in “With the Crowd” once again, the RiverDogs will celebrate two delightful decades at The Joe with a pair of dazzling postgame fireworks displays and the first renditions of their two newest weekly promotions: Saturdays Live at The Joe and Holy City Sundays.

The RiverDogs will host an exhibition against the Myrtle Beach Pelicans to open the season on Wednesday, April 6 at 7:05pm before beginning the regular season with a seven-game homestand against the Columbia Fireflies (April 7-10) and the Asheville Tourists (April 11-13).

Wednesday, April 6, 7:05pm: “Battle of the Beaches” Exhibition Game Opener: The RiverDogs clash with the Myrtle Beach Pelicans in the battle for coastal supremacy as Charleston hosts a non-traditional in-state rival. The exhibition opener against the High-A affiliate of the Chicago Cubs will be the first of two contests between the clubs, with another game slated for next season at TicketReturn.com Field. Fans will have plenty of opportunities to donate to a great cause as a portion of the night’s ticket proceeds benefit the MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital. Thursday, April 7, 7:05pm: Opening Night: Always THE place to be in Charleston, Opening Night features a RiverDogs magnet schedule giveaway to the first 5,000 fans in attendance and will be the first of 12 Budweiser Thirsty Thursdays as the RiverDogs play hosts to the newest members of the South Atlantic League, the Columbia Fireflies (formerly the Savannah Sand Gnats). Get to the ballpark early (gates open at 6pm) to enjoy the pregame festivities including a unique rendition of the National Anthem featuring a piano provided by Fox Music and a special to be announced guest performer. DJ Natty Heavy will be shredding tunes all night long at the Ashley View Pub featuring $1 draft beers. Friday, April 8, 7:05pm: Friday Night Fireworks: A pair of RiverDogs classics highlight the docket as fans conclude the work week with more combustion with an extravagantly explosive postgame fireworks show presented by Home Telecom and Mix96. The first of 11 Friday Night Fireworks shows will feature the fantastic fiddling skills with live music provided by Seth G. The RiverDogs will wear specialty red uniforms to honor our military as part of Red Shirt Fridays in association with ISHPI. Fans that wear red to the game get $1 off their ticket purchase at the gate with the option to donate that dollar to the Wounded Warrior Corps.

Saturday, April 9, 6:05pm: Saturdays Live at The Joe Presents “The Human Cannonball”: Fans can continue to expect the unexpected as they join in "With the Crowd" in a summer series of postgame shows. Come early for a pregame karate show and player autographs on the concourse. Stay late for the first "Saturdays Live at The Joe" presented by Kickin' 92.5 and Star 99.7 that will quickly become a staple in Charleston. The RiverDogs start off the Saturday series with a bang when David "The Bullet" Smith brings his Human Cannonball Show to the Lowcountry following the opening series’ penultimate contest against the Fireflies.

Sunday, April 10, 5:05pm: Holy City Sunday / Kids Opening Day: As Charleston takes on Columbia in the series finale, the RiverDogs embrace Charleston’s "Holy City" moniker that has defined the community as a place of unity for centuries. The club will wear specialty uniforms that proudly display the "Holy City" namesake across their pinstriped tops with a new HC emblem on the caps. It’s also Kids Opening Day where Lowcountry youth take over the ballpark including taking tickets, throwing on a headset in the radio booth, and even becoming GM for a day. The first 1,000 kids 12 and under through the gates will also receive a RiverDogs t-shirt courtesy of Vapor Apparel. Monday, April 11, 7:05pm: Dog Day presented by Z93/ “Dogs With A Cause”: The RiverDogs fittingly put the "Dog" in RiverDogs on National Pet Day, the first Monday Dog Day of the season in conjunction with Camp Bow Wow and Z93. Bring your pup to cheer on the RiverDogs as you enjoy $1 beers and $1 hot dogs presented by Miller Lite. "Dogs with a Cause" also returns on Monday nights, and for the first time in association with Blackbaud, Inc. The RiverDogs and Blackbaud, the local software and services leader for the global philanthropic community, will share the spotlight with a different local nonprofit each Monday. Blackbaud and the RiverDogs will host the Greater Charleston Civitan Club as the first Dogs with a Cause featured nonprofit.

Family Fun Zone, Pork Roll Paradise Food Stand Highlight Enhancements at ARM & HAMMER Park

Pork Roll Paradise will offer the most comprehensive pork roll menu in 2016 including the Oink, Cluck and Moo (top left), the Thunder Dog (top right), the Pig Pen (bottom left) and the Hog Steak (bottom right).

The 2016 season is just six days away and your Thunder are proud to announce several additions to the family-friendly experience at ARM & HAMMER Park.

"We had such great feedback from our fans about the pork roll offerings at the Trenton Thunder World Famous Case's Pork Roll Eating Championship in September that we had to find a way to bring these great items to our fans for every game this season," said Thunder GM/COO Jeff Hurley.

Pork Roll Paradise, presented by Case's Pork Roll, will offer the widest range of pork roll items in the state of New Jersey. The stand will be part of the first base concession stand and offer the classic Thunder Dog: 1/5 lb hot dog, 1/4 lb of pork roll and two slices of American Cheese on a torpedo roll. The Oink, Cluck and Moo, the classic New Jersey breakfast favorite, pork roll, egg, and cheese on a kaiser roll. The Swine Sandwich, a pork fans' dream containing two slices of pork roll, pulled pork, and bacon bits on a kaiser roll. The Pig Pen lays chopped pork roll, pulled pork, and bacon bits on top of a bed of mashed potatoes. The Thunder will also offer their take on the Philadelphia cheesesteak with The Hog Steak at games in 2016. Chopped pork roll with bacon cheddar cheese sauce on a torpedo roll will give fans the classic pork roll cheesesteak. Pork Roll Paradise will also serve fountain drinks, Bud Light, Goose Island, and a variety of canned beers available only at that stand.

In addition to Pork Roll Paradise, the food options at ARM & HAMMER Park will now feature two soft serve concession stands one each at the end of the 1st and 3rd base concourse.

Thunder fans will be swept away by the aromas of the brand new Nuts For You stand located on the first base concourse past the Waterfront Grill. Nuts For You will serve cinnamon roasted almonds, cashews and pecans in small and large sizes.

The most kid-friendly improvement is the brand new Family Fun Zone located on the first base side of the stadium. New inflatable games, decorative lights, a giant four-in-a-row, and on select nights balloon twisters and face painters will be outside the Family Fun Zone. Fans will notice the addition of a brand new speed pitch on the third base side of the ballpark behind Fitch's Place. Fans will also enjoy the addition of a brand new Plinko board, presented by Kennedy's Cheesecakes, on the main concourse to earn great prizes at every Thunder game.

The transformation of the luxury suite level at ARM & HAMMER Park began this off-season. A number of suites received new furniture, flooring, and new televisions.

New merchandise will be available at the Thunder Company Store in 2016. A brand new selection of Men's, Women's, and Children's products from Under Armour, Columbia Sportswear, 5th and Ocean apparel. Key Dates for the 2016 MLB Regular Season

On Sunday, April 3 the 2016 MLB regular season kicks off with a rematch of the 2015 World Series between the New York Mets and the Kansas City Royals. Most everyone else is in action on April 4 as the 2016 season kicks off and here are a few more key dates for you for this upcoming season. Keep this bookmarked in case you need it.

April 18^th, a Monday in case you were wondering, the St. Louis Cardinals and the Chicago Cubs renew their rivalry for the new season with former Cardinals Jason Heyward and John Lackey making their debuts against their former team.

The first Yankees vs. Red Sox game is on Friday, April 29 in Fenway Park while the first game inside Yankee Stadium comes on Friday, May 6^th.

On Friday, July 15 Zack Greinke and the Arizona Diamondbacks face off with his former team the Los Angeles Dodgers for the first time after leaving this winter in free agency. The Dodgers are many people’s pick to win the division but the Diamondbacks are not going to go down without a fight.

Ken Griffey Jr. and Mike Piazza take their place amongst the greatest in MLB history when the 2016 Hall of Fame induction ceremony goes down on July 24, 2016. That’s a Sunday by the way.

August 1^st, not July 31^st, is the trade deadline this season. Why? Because July 31^st is on a Sunday. #LOGIC

Tuesday, September 27^th will mark the final time David Ortiz steps into Yankee Stadium during the regular season. How will he be honored and will he get his standing ovation? Stay tuned. 

The WPIX Channel 11 Yankees Broadcast Schedule for 2016

The New York Yankees are back on WPIX Channel 11 for their second straight season with their first game kicking off on April 30, 2016 against none other than the Boston Red Sox. WPIX 11 will broadcast 21 regular season Yankees games this season all in HD and will also showcase pregame specials for all the primetime 7:00 pm ET starts.

The YES Network’s Michael Kay, David Cone, John Flaherty, Al Leiter, Meredith Marakovits, Paul O’Neill and Ken Singleton will cover the games on WPIX with YES producing the telecasts this season. Here is the schedule for this upcoming season on WPIX:
