Phelps struggles as Orioles snap Yankees four-game win streak, 3-2

David Phelps gave up 5 hits (1 run) in just 2.2 innings of work tonight as the Yankees had their four-game win streak snapped by the Orioles, 3-2. Like with yesterday's game, the Yanks scored all of their runs in this one's second inning, as Francisco Cervelli hit a line-drive home run to left field and OF prospect Yangervis Solarte drove in another run with a ground-ball single.

Anyway, some notable Pinstripes who played in this loss were Jacoby Ellsbury, who went 0-for-2 with a walk, Carlos Beltran, who also went 0-for-2 with a walk, Derek Jeter, who went 0-for-2, Brian Roberts, who went 1-for-1 with a walk, and Matt Thornton, who retired the only man he faced on one pitch. So yea, this game was a loss, but I'd say it went alright. Roberts finally reached base multiple times, and Thornton, though not for a too long, finally appeared.

  1. "Phelps struggles" is a true headline Jack!
I concur with you about his struggle, but overall, I think he showed he can get out of a jam without putting the team in a hole to start the game. He didn't panic, he went about his business and saved the situation.
Question being, was it the catcher or the pitcher that saved the day? We know the pitcher will get the credit for everything...as he also gets the blame, if things go wrong. But, was it the pitch selection of Cisco or the talent, maturity, fortitude of Phelps?
Either way, I think it was a good step up for Phelps and Cisco!

  2. Jack, any ideas on who the #5 starter will be? It comes down to three for me, each one different type of pitcher...what is your call?

  3. I'd like to see Pineda get that job.

    1. I'd like to see Nuno get the job out of camp. You have to worry about Pineda being stretched out and having the stamina to make 25-30 starts, with Nuno you do too but not as much.

Also I like having two left handed pitchers in the rotation. Also it's not like every one of our starters will make 35 starts, Pineda would get his turn.

  4. Daniel...
The feel good story would be Pineda, IF he has been pitching as well as they have said, he would be a great asset for the team. But as you said, can he hold up this year? What do you do with him? Ask him to go down to AAA to stretch out and come up, IF there is an injury?
Phelps, as I said above showed me he is no longer a Rookie with the way he got out of a tight spot.
Nuno has shown he can get the job done and is...as you said...a left hander, which is a plus. Most teams best hitters are left handed hitters, so it makes good sense.

Bottom line...Nuno is my call for the 5th spot, at this time!

    1. If Pineda wins the job I have no problem with it, just a personal preference with Nuno.

Interesting though nuno is being skipped this weekend for a start... wonder if that means anything.
