Yankees Scouting David Price Heavily

The New York Yankees are one of many teams that have been scouting the Tampa Bay Rays ace David Price heavily lately. Buster Olney reported today that the Rays are ready to trade Price "right now" although no deal is imminent.

Price is only 28 years old and comes with a year of team control after 2014. Price has seen some decline in velocity but still has managed at least 10 strikeouts in four straight starts.

The Rays would likely trade Price within the division but the Yankees would have to really overpay. I think the Yankees could clean the farm out before restocking it on July 2 when the international signing period begins but it seems unlikely that will happen. Here's to wishing.

  1. Good to see Cashman finally acknowledging the trouble the team's in

    1. Is he? He's scouting, he hasn't traded anyone yet

  2. I don't get it, Cashman gets blamed because Hal and Co., wouldn't give him any money to sign the players we needed. Then, after so much yelling by the fans, Cashman is told money is no object. But guess what, all the players that are difference makers, are gone!
He signed what he could, he wanted more money to sign Cano (not years) but, was told no!
That's the story I got, back when it was all going down.
Anyone else read anything other than that?

    1. Cashman's hands didn't seem tied whatsoever this offseason....

And Cashman was the most vocal about a "fair" contract to Cano

    2. Cashmans hands were tied at the beginning of FA, then he was given the go ahead, but to late. All the quality players were gone!
What is he going to say, "They won't give me anymore money!" for Cano?
Then again, it may have been, he DID think it was a fair price for Cano!

  3. If all the good players were gone how did we get stuck with Brian McCann, Jacoby Ellsbury, and Carlos Beltran? We didn't wanna go 10 years with Cano, that's why Cano is not here. It wasn't the money.

Carlos wanted to play for the Yankees for years. Ellsbury and McCann on moneys not paid to Cano...per-chance?!?
Face it, there were better and younger power hitters out there than Beltran and Ellsbury...Ellsbury has other things going for him than just power. Both were at the right price some of the others were asking more than Cash had to spend at the time.
If his hands weren't tied in the beginning, why didn't he sign some of the power guys out there. One need not like him but, he has done ok with what they let him do. Hal and Randy give the ok on signings, for the last few years anyhow.
It has been in the Sports Financial News!

  4. And again, Cashman was the one coming out against a 10 year deal for Cano. He offered what he thought was fair, fiscally, and Cano wanted the year. If we offered 10 years and $200 million I bet he signs. I think the years were more the determining factor than the money is what I was trying to say, my apologies if I was not clear.. I do that sometimes, my mind and my fingers don't always cooperate.

McCann and Ellsbury I think were coming to the Yankees with or without Cano. Cashman said McCann was our top free agent target this offseason and I am sure that was followed up by Ellsbury or Choo. Beltran was the knee jerk reaction to Cano leaving town.

I'll give you better options than Beltran, Shin Soo Choo for example, but not Ellsbury. If the deal wasn't for so long or if we didn't already have an Ellsbury on the team in Gardner I think we would be being praised for this deal as well.

  5. I don't think Cashman thought he would need power guys on a team that already had McCann, Beltran, Soriano, Ellsbury (hit over 30 before), Teixeira, etc etc etc. There were no real great options at either second base or third base other than Cano, we got what we got unfortunately.

  6. I'd like to hear about the players the Yankees didn't sign. Besides Cano (who we've talked about enough), I don't see anybody that I'm sorry Cashman let slip to other teams. I like Ellsbury, and looking at the contracts each of them got, I prefer Jacoby over Shin Soo.

Who are you thinking? Nelson Cruz? Jarrod Saltalamacchia? Omar Infante? Curtis Granderson? Fine players, but not exactly guys I'm losing sleep over being in other uniforms.

  7. Choo would be a better signing then Ellsbury for THIS team. Choo's OBP is better, more power, comparable defender, comparable (although lagging behind) in speed and has been much more durable/lucky this season.

The stats this year may not back that up but over a 7 year contract I think I would have rather have had Choo, and I love Ellsbury.
