Live Game Updates: Yankees at Padres - 7/1

11:10 p.m., End 1st: After the Yankees strand the bases loaded in the top half of the first, the Padres give them a much-needed lesson how to clear them. The home team -- just 33-46 on the year and 18-24 at Petco Park -- scores three runs all with two outs, and just like that, the Yankees trail 3-0. Needless to say, it doesn't look like tonight will be the night Eovaldi turns it around.

11:23 p.m., Mid 2nd: Yankees get one back on an Ellsbury RBI single. They still trail 3-1, but at least Colin Rea doesn't have his best stuff.

11:53 p.m., Mid 4th: Padres now lead 4-1 after Ryan Schimpf's solo shot in the bottom of the second. Things aren't exactly turning around for Eovaldi.

12:29 p.m., End 5th: Eovaldi's night is done after 4 1/3 innings. He allows six earned runs, inflating his ERA to 5.54. If this score holds, he will have dropped four straight starts, and with the Yankees currently trailing 6-1, such a result seems likely.

12:51 p.m., End 6th: McCann continues his recent hot streak with a solo shot in the sixth. Still, the Padres lead by four.

1:55 p.m., Mid 9th: Yankees nearly complete a second miracle comeback this week. Down 7-2 heading into the ninth, the Yanks score four and put the tying run at third, but Brett Gardner (0-for-5 with three strikeouts on the night) is unable to drive him in. Tough loss, but at least they went down fighting.

  1. Still running hicks everyday... Dude is like 0 for 20 with 2 walks. Girardi should burn in hell.

    1. Sometimes one has a tougher time adjusting as a switch hitter and playing once in a while.
Didi was going to sit when a left hander was on the mound because the word was he couldn't hit lefties!
Small samples are hard to judge anyone.

    3. Too bad Ken. He's at 200 at bats, go cry me a river in Scranton. He blows against lefties, so maybe he's not as much of a switch hitter as you think.

Refs has half that at bats, and both are better than hicks .215 against righties.

Eventually you need to see reality and not potential. Especially when The dude is 26,not 19.

    4. Extremely well said to both Daryl and Hans. Sometimes I get tired of Reed's all knowing baseball nuggets. "Sometimes it takes longer for a switch hitter." We all know this! It's fucking July! Please stop defending worthless trash like Hicks. He sucked in Minnesota, and he still sucks in New York.

    9. I have to jump on the Hicks hate wagon. It is July and he has played far more than most bench guys and fourth outfielders have and should. He fell out of grace in Minnesota for the same reasons. He's not as good as we were sold. Bottom line. time to go.

    10. Sorry Daniel, I don't give up on a player that fast. My reasons are monumental;
Didi, O'Niel, and Brett can't hit lefties...Mattingly is a punch & Judy hitter...all of these guys had a bad rap for one thing or another, they didn't turn out too bad. Maybe Hicks will be the exception and not hit much, then again, given a week or more of playing time may help. One has to remember about 50+ of his 170+ at bats were as a defensive sub, not a big help.

I'll give him a bit more time!

    11. You can stick with him Mr. Reed and I commend you for it. I usually give players that much patience and loyalty as well but sometimes it's glaring obvious he doesn't have it. Aaron Hicks doesn't have it.

And this isn't a small sample size. He has sucked in Minnesota, that's why he was benched and made a 4th starter. He's sucked here. It's only 200 at bats here, it's hundreds of at bats since he began struggling all told though.

  2. You three are real smart to have known Hicks had 200 ABs, The only thing is...you are dead wrong, it is more like around 164 ABs the avg, is about 250/300.
You guys must have been watching different games than I have. He has many at bats but very intermittently which means he has no way to get in a grove...and for a switch hitter that is very important.
He may turn out to be no good but, let's see what he can do with playing every day, shall we?
I think I heard a few saying Didi sucked last year...when one or two of us said; "Give him a chance"! So, don't be so quick on the negative "Follow the leader stuff", it is very boring.
I sometimes have to explain things to make sure I am understood. I overestimate some peoples knowledge at times! I was giving my opinion about Hicks...not facts!
    Have a nice day guys!

    2. Yes it is Daryl, but I am not much of a joiner...and better days are coming. I would venture to say, some time in 2018/2019. Maybe as soon as 2017 if Cashman makes the right deals. I know, Cashman is a very..............?
Let's see what deals are made, shall we?
Have a good pre-July 4th day and the fourth!

    3. Daryl why waste your time, you can explain to some people that the sky is blue and water is wet, yet they quite can't grasp the understanding of when someone isn't very good? I said all of last year that Eovaldi won most of his games on 6 plus run support. I also said that trade was a waste. Prado and both Phelps are doing a great job over in Miami and the genius GM is paying part of Prado's contract. Rub mud in your eye on top of it. Eovaldi has shown you exactly what I said last year. Throws hard and straight and major league hitters can turn it around. Just look at how many dingers he has given up. I also want to be clear because some people on here don't get it. I do think he is better than I thought. Again a 4 or 5 and thats what he is. His baseball card says he gives up many hits per inning and in a season, and this year it cries it. Oh thats right Eovaldi hasn't gotten a chance to pitch or he needs time to adjust to the league. I forgot to add that to the list lol. Enjoy your 4th and don't mess with fireworks and that is a public service announcment from JPP of the Giants

    5. Reed, I think it's great how positive you are. Hell, I'm right there with you. So I'm not going to hate on you for staying in Hicks' corner.

However, this team has other options for the outfield, so giving Aaron the regular at bats just isn't in the cards. Does that mean the team could miss out on something, a la Solarte? Yep. But with Refsnyder already on the team, and guys like Aaron Judge and Ben Gamel knocking on the MLB door, what should they do?

I definitely don't want to hold back those three kids just to see if Hicks can figure things out. Hell, the guy does have nearly 1000 MLB at bats under his belt, along with a batting average of .220 and OBP of .299.

    6. I know you and Daniel are right Bryan, I just have a habit of giving a young switch hitter a little more time. My bad!
I am one like you and Daniel that says let the kids play before going out and getting some one that is no better than what we already have.
I guess I better live by what I say.
Besides I love to see the young guys play more than the over the hill guys.

    7. No, it's not your bad. You have a valid opinion, and you backed it up.

  3. So Eovaldi goes to the pen and his era over the last five games is over 9. hmmmm I think that has been said a few times from someone. It's ok I know who said it about Eovaldi not being top flight. I think it was Levin and yours truly. If I'm wrong on that Levin let me know I apologize. On a side note I do think he will be back in the rotation sooner rather than later as he is better than Nova and how Nova is still around boggles the mind

    1. He's struggled. Doesn't mean we are right just like when he had that stretch of great starts it didn't make him top flight either.

    2. Sorry Burch I'm right. Just look at his overall record. Again he is better than I thought 4/5 more of a 5. I would have him in the lineup over CC and Nova
