New York Yankees Leaders Through 54 Games

The New York Yankees enter an off day that followed a seven game west coast swing that included a four game series with the Oakland Athletics and a three game set at Safeco Field against the Seattle Mariners. The Yankees handed Oakland their first home series win of the season when the team lost three of four games to the A’s and then proceeded to beat up on Robinson Cano and the Mariners. The theme here is consistency and this team is consistently inconsistent.

ICYMI: Early Team Leaders

By Bryan Van Dusen:

While I was aware of some of the following things, I decided to look a little further into Yankees statistics, and here's what I FOUND...

The three men that are tied for the team lead in home runs are Alex Rodriguez, Mark Teixiera, and Stephen Drew. While Tex isn't a big surprise, who thought ARod would be hitting like this? A .411 OBP? An OPS of .600? Oh, and Stephen freakin Drew? Seriously? Plenty of fans didn't even want two of these three guys on the team (possibly all three if you include those that would rather see Greg Bird than Teixiera at first).

"Can you get off my back, ALREADY?"

Only two Yankees have hit triples this year. Would that be Brett Gardner and Jacoby Ellsbury? No. Well, one of them is Brett or Jacoby, right? Nope. One of those guys is Brian McCann, a man not known for being "fleet of foot", while the other player with a triple has only appeared in 7 of the team's 14 games... Garrett Jones.

Chris Young, the same guy that hit .200 for the Oakland Athletics last season, currently leads the Yankees in batting average at .344.

So what Yankees starter has the best ERA this season? Would it be the #1 starter Masahiro Tanaka? Their #2 starter Michael Pineda? CC Sabathia? No, no, and no. Nathan Eovaldi has the best ERA out of the five starters with a mark of 3.12.

Why stop with the Yankees? Let's look across MLB...

While Adrian Gonzalez leads MLB in batting average, I'm willing to bet that very few people outside of Coors Field have heard of the man with the next highest batting average in the league... DJ LeMauhieu.

Alongside the aforementioned Adrian Gonzalez, Adam Jones, Joey Votto, Paul Goldschmidt, Hanley Ramirez, and JD Martinez, the man tied for second in home runs in MLB is Luis Valbruena of the Houston Astros.

The MLB leader in ERA finished last season at 4.55. but has yet to give up a run in his first two starts this season. That man is the Texas Rangers' Nick Martinez.

Am I saying that Chris Young will be the Yankees best hitter by season's end? Will Nathan Eovaldi be the team's best starter? No... I'm not saying that at all. Just like I'd never say that DJ LeMauhieu will finish 2015 with the highest batting average in the league. Nor would I say that Luis Valbuena will be in the top three of home run hitters across MLB.

"Not even I believe that. Hell, I bet you didn't even know who I was."

Guys... it's been 14 games. That means that over 90% of regular season games remain to be played. Chances are Didi Gregorius will not have an OBP of .233. And before any of you start falling in love with Stephen Drew, you should realize that he's probably not going to be among the team's top home run hitters. Just like how Michael Pineda should finish the season with a sub-5.00 ERA.

I don't know about you, but the way this team started the season, I'm kinda psyched that they are 7-7. Not to mention that one of those wins came at the hands of a team tied with the most wins in MLB... the Tigers. And the Yankees are scoring runs! Who would have thought that would happen?

I'm saving my judgments for a little while longer. Perhaps you should too.

Yankees Leaders Through Nine Games

The New York Yankees have played a whopping nine games this season, three each against the Toronto Blue Jays, the Boston Red Sox and the Baltimore Orioles, and have had an up and down season to date. One night the team looks like a little league team playing against a High School team and the next they look like the bullies that are beating up on the Bad News Bears. All in all I see a lot of positives to pull from these first two weeks of the season whether they reflect in the win/loss column or not and whether they really show on this list of the Yankees leaders thus far in 2015.

Let’s take a look first at the offense that has been more like Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde and less like the Bronx Bombers that some of us have grown accustomed to seeing.

GP: 9 (Carlos Beltran, Alex Rodriguez, Chase Headley and Didi Gregorius)

H: 10 (Jacoby Ellsbury)

HR: 3 (Mark Teixeira)

RBI: 7 (Alex Rodriguez)

BA: .290 (Jacoby Ellsbury - regulars) .333 (Chris Young - bench)

SB: 2 (Jacoby Ellsbury)

2B: 4 (Carlos Beltran)

The pitching is supposed to be the strong suit for the team this season, especially the bullpen, and honestly it has lived up to the hype thus far. I know that two weeks is an extremely small sample size but I’d rather be great the first two weeks and have something to build on rather than left on this off day wondering what in the world is going on.

G:5 (Chris Martin & David Carpenter)

ERA: 1.69 ( Adam Warren - starters) 0.00 (Andrew Miller - bullpen)

W/L: 1-1 (Masahiro Tanaka) 1-0 (Michael Pineda)

K: 15 (CC Sabathia and Michael Pineda)

S: 2 (Andrew Miller)

Looking Back at the Yankees Leaders from 2014

The 2014 season is over and the Yankees finished with an 84-77 record. Let's take a look at how they got there.

Games Played:

149 games for Jacoby Ellsbury followed closely by Brett Gardner's 148 and Derek Jeter's 145.

At Bats:

Derek Jeter had the most at bats this season finishing with 581.

Runs Scored:

No player scored 100 runs but Carlos Beltran came close with 87.

Hits:

Jacoby Ellsbury led the way with 156 hits and barely edges Martin Prado's 151 with Arizona and New York.

Doubles:

Jacoby Ellsbury led the way with 27 doubles with Prado came in second once again with 26 with both teams.

Home Runs:

The Bronx Bombers were led by 23 home runs from Brian McCann and 22 home runs from Mark Teixeira.

RBI:

Brian McCann actually overtook Jacoby Ellsbury's total late and led the way with 75 RBI.

AVG:

Ichiro Suzuki leads the team with a .284 batting average but did not qualify for the batting race. Jacoby Ellsbury had a .271 batting average for the Yankees which was the best unless you include Martin Prado and his combined .282 average between the American and National League.

Wins:

Masahiro Tanaka led the pitching staff in wins by two over Hiroki Kuroda when he finished with 13 victories. Oh, and he missed two months of time.

Losses:

Brandon McCarthy lost 15 games this season, most of them with the Arizona Diamondbacks, and Hiroki Kuroda lost nine games with the Yankees in 2014.

ERA:

Dellin Betances had the best ERA on the team with a 1.40 ERA this season. Michael Pineda finished the season with a 1.89 ERA in limited action. Masahiro Tanaka finished with a 2.77 ERA after getting roughed up in Boston on his last start of the season.

K's:

Brandon McCarthy struck out 175 batters this season combined while Hiroki Kuroda struck out 146. Tanaka missed two months and still came in third with 141 K's on the season. Dellin Betances struck out the most of any Yankee reliever in the franchise's history with 135 in one season.

David Robertson finished with 39 saves. That 40th save would have mean't millions, literally.
