Red Sox Get Hanley and Panda, Should We Worry?

The Boston Red Sox are re-tooling and rebuilding their team after missing the postseason in 2014 and the New York Yankees should take notice and worry. The Boston Red Sox will no longer be the whipping boy in the American League East after signing maybe the top two offensive free agents in this class. Each player reportedly will receive a five year deal and both players will receive somewhere in the neighborhood of $100 million each. Paying for guys entering or leaving their primes to mega contracts and stealing all the attention in the media, isn’t that the Yankees job?

Hanley and Sandoval should take advantage of the Green Monster in Fenway and have huge offensive seasons in 2015 assuming health. The worst part about it is that Boston is likely not done this hot stove season either. The team could always bring back Jon Lester and/or trade away depth, Will Middlebrooks and Xander Bogaerts for example, for even more pieces to complete the puzzle. The team could always move Ramirez to left field since the dimensions are so small out there if the star would be willing to make the move allowing the team to keep and build around Bogaerts and creates a controversy.

Currently the Red Sox have Yoenis Cespedes in left field, Shane Victorino in right field, and a combination of Allen Craig, Daniel Nava, Brock Holt, and others. I said all that to say this, the Red Sox are far from done and that group of management has a track record of doing things efficiently and the right way. If I were the Yankees organization I would be scared right about now because I know, as a fan, I am.

  1. Hell yes we should worry! Boston is acquiring the best talent on the market, and we've signed Chris Young and traded Cervelli for a pitcher we could have replaced for free from our minor leagues! Now there's no upgrade on the free agent market better than what we had last year. The only way we get better is to destroy our farm system.

  2. I agree Jeff we are going to have to gut the farm to make a considerable change.

  3. Guy's the farm system is terrible because Hal has left the clown prince named Cashman in charge. Tell me why would we hire a roving minor league batting instructor to run our head of baseball operations?Oppenheimer was a joke so we give it to Denbo. Why wouldn't you explore options with people from the Cards and Giants and Rays who have successful scouting departments and draft very well even when they finish high in the standings? We didn't even kick the tires on anyone outside our organization.

George's death put this franchise back at least 15 years and in my opinion I would love for Hal to sell to someone like Mark Cuban who wants to win year in year out. Hal talks out of his ass and does nothing about it and if he meant what he said we wouldn't be sitting here with Chris Young and Cervelli traded and hoping that Headley comes back or McCarthy. We would be hitting home runs with signings, not little sac bunts. I get Cashman likes to do things for charity but I think he needs to focus on doing his job properly and lets not miss playoffs three years in a row because as of now we are heading in that direction. Happy Turkey day to all

  4. I would disagree that the farm system is terrible, I would say underrated. What the team is missing in can't miss blue chip prospects the team makes up for in ton of good talent. Greg Bird, Tyler Austin, Manny Banuelos, Luis Severino, etc. are guys that are not going to make Top 10 lists in MLB but they are guys that could conceivably fill big spots and be more than serviceable for the team.

Just to point out that Robinson Cano, Mariano Rivera, Andy Pettitte, and a load of others were never believed to be blue chip prospects either. Cashman may trade them away prematurely too often but the talent is definitely there, always has been.

  5. There is one thing being missed here, this team didn't get bad in one year or two or even three years!
This started when the boss turned everything over to the kids. Much has been said about how our Farm system is so bad, it isn't...as Daniel said, it is underrated.
If George were to have been running things the Farm would be JUNK, but we would be winning WS Rings. The reason was, he wanted the team to win at any cost, even using his own money for the team and destroying the Farm.
The kids income is from the stocks and their jobs with the team, the new boss is a bookkeeper, he looks at the bottom line instead of the team. Giving your GM (any GM) a low budget and expect him to come up with some top players is ludicrous. Then, when even the NY Print Media gets on your case, you say ok go for it Cashman, here is the money! News Flash, It was about a BIG MONTH too damn late...all the good top players were gone and we had to get what was left.
Sorry, as I have said before and Ken H backs it up with his comments...we need new ownership and we need it NOW.
No matter what this team does this year they will not be able to compete with the other teams in the "Beast of the EAST"! That is why I say, there will never be a better time than now for a fire sale. Bring in very good players and some of our Kids from the Farm. This is going to take a couple of years to fix and it can be done with hard choices being made and many $$$$$ being spent.

    1. Unfortunately we're not going to get new management any time soon. George made his millions and the Yankees were his hobby. Hal and Hank run the team like this is their job and they NEED TO MAKE MONEY off the team to survive.

    2. George made his money from his ship building company and put much of it back into the team. He bought out his partners and put a lot of money into the team in his first few years. His money helped build "YES" TV, which in turn generated more money for the team and his kids just sold it.

    3. They still own some stock in it I believe, no? They just aren't the main partners anymore. Either way like I said, it's all about the cash on hand.

  6. The main problem I see is the "bad" contracts. Right now, we have ARod, Teixeria, and Sabathia absolutely plaguing this team. In the near future, it will be Ellsbury. If we trade for somebody like Tulo or Andrus, it will be them. If they sign Lester, Shields, or Scherzer, it will be their contracts hurting us. Let's face it guys. Premier players rarely make it to free agency now. Their respective teams lock them up for their prime years. We end up paying for the decline years. Signing a 30 year old player for 7 years is nothing short of stupid. Nobody in Yankee land minds Ellsbury making $22 million right now. We'll all be cussing the contract and blaming Cashman in 4 years though. But, look at what he did last year though. He broke Yankee policy and renegotiated our own homegrown Ellsbury for less years and less money. The answer is in our farm system. Austin, Judge, Refsnyder, Sanchez, Severino, Lindgren, Clarkin, Jagielo, Bird, and all those teenage shortstops we signed are on the way. Get aggressive with their development and lock up their prime years. That's the key to future championships.

    1. Jeff, we sometimes disagree but, this is not one of them!
Now is the time to see what we have on the farm, it will take time but, in the long run it will produce! A start is signing Yoan Moncada, hell A-Rod came up at 19 and jeter at 20, so if we have to sign him to a Major league contract so be it. If he is as good at the plate, as they say he is, he can be taught to become an avg. SS at the minimum! We did it before why not now?

    2. The good thing about the Yankees Jeff, well what SHOULD be good about the Yankees and has been good in years past, is that we are a financial juggernaut. We can eat these contracts if we wanted to. George would eat these contracts, Hank and Hal not so much.
