Why Not DL Mark Teixeira & Make Sure He’s Healthy?

It’s the same old song and dance with these New York Yankees. A player gets hurt and rather than placing said player on the disabled list the team would rather play with a 24 man, and even a 23 man for a few games this season, bench for whatever reason. The team did it when Jacoby Ellsbury was hurt and missed what felt like a month and they’ve done it with Mark Teixeira due to this neck pain once already this season. Why do it again? Why not just place Teixeira on the disabled list, especially with Alex Rodriguez coming off the disabled list, and make double sure that Teixeira is healthy and effective? I don’t get it.

Are the Yankees truly concerned about missing his sub-.200 batting average in the middle of the lineup? Are the Yankees truly concerned about losing his one home run a month pace, which I am under-exaggerating on for emphasis, for two weeks? The Yankees could place almost anyone in his spot and get comparable or better production from them offensively. Teixeira has stunk up the place to date this season.

I know one thing the Yankees are truly concerned about doing without and that is his defense at first base. The best option the Yankees have at first may be Chase Headley and he is nowhere near as effective or talented at the position than Teixeira is. Dustin Ackley is not the answer at first base, again defensively speaking, and New York doesn’t have any true options down on the farm leaving the Yankees in a pickle.

Do they sacrifice defense in lieu of offense and try to get by with Ackley while Robert Refsnyder heads down to Triple-A to learn a new position? It almost feels like they have to at this point, no? This is already the second time the neck has stiffened up and given Teixeira pain which leads you to believe that if it’s not properly rested, rehabbed and/or fixed that it will happen again the longer the season draws on. We need Teixeira more in August and September than we do now, although granted we need him back and effective pretty badly right now, so the team needs to get this done sooner rather than later. DL him, get him healthy and get back to our winning ways.

  1. This is really becoming a tired act for Teixeira and the Yankees. First of all, I don't know any working man that feels 100% every day. This guy would ask out of the lineup if he had a splinter. He has no heart. He's a disgrace to players like Jeter, Pedroa, or Wright who played through injuries every day. Or even Andrew Miller who wouldn't go on the disabled list with a broken frickin wrist. The other frustrating part is the Yankees putting up with it. I would put him on the DL every time he complained, and trash him in the press. Try getting a big money deal when the whole league knows you're a pussy.

    1. Jeff, I must respectively disagree with you on this one.
Playing through injuries is not the best thing for the club, it makes the player feel good and the fans say he is a tough guy...but, sometimes the injury effects ones play on the field.
A stiff neck qualifies as a damn good reason to sit out a game or two. If you have ever had a neck so stiff you could not turn your head without turning your body also...you would/could not play either!
I must say he does have a lot of little injuries but at first base he has a lot of plays that are only made if he is in good health. I always took the word of the person until proven otherwise and let him set this one out.

    2. Hence why I said put him on the DL. Every single time. He complains so much that I don't believe his injuries are as bad as they're made out to be. Even if this one is, I don't care. He's soft. Don't confuse me saying that with me not thinking he's a talented athlete. It really surprises me that you would say that though. I've read numerous posts from you about the "glory days" of baseball. How soft the game has become, and how today's players wouldn't make it.

    3. Levin all I can say to this is Tex is a selfish ball player that won't try and do anything that will help the team out. He will not try and break the shift, instead he will try to hit over the shift. What Tex fails to realize is that if you drop a few bunts down or go the other way and make a effort it just might make teams shift less.

McCann will try to go the other way and for that I applaud him. Yes I know one person in particular on this site will criticize my thought process as usual and with that I am fine because I know that a professional ball player should be able to lay down a bunt and be able to hit the other way because just like Hal said last week these are the greatest ball players around or some shit like that. Selfish = Tex. For all I care he could be cut or put on the bench and it would be ok with me. Once again the great GM known as the elf failed to get a suitable replacement over the winter so we are stuck with Ackley and Romine and Headley as replacements, but hey lets anoint the Elf as a top gm because he's been here 18 years so that makes him the top of his profession as a gm. Incompetence in Hal allows incompetence in the elf to continue this charade.

    4. Jeff thank you for your reply...
I was trying to point out that sometimes one hurts the team by playing with an injury.
Example; one hurts his leg just a little, we all know an injury to the legs of almost any kind will hurt your hitting, running and fielding. We have seen it happen time and again with Brett.

    5. Teix is a puss. He may have a legit beef here with the neck, kind of hard to swing a bat without the use of your neck and upper body, but it's the other injuries that preceded this injury that makes him look soft.

    6. it's even more than that! it's bitching when someone leaned in to catch a foul ball. it's avoiding kids asking for autographs.
he is/was a great player, it's just a real shame that this is the conversation we have now.

  2. Tex has said he will not change his game from the left side. He says, "I get paid to hit HRs". From the right side he says, "I will hit it where it is pitched and not always pull the pitch". Something like that, anyhow!
Which means he is selfish! No question about it.

    1. He's selfish and he's not only hurting the team but hurting himself. He wants to play five more years yet refuses to adjust his game to adapt to the game. In MLB you have to change and adapt almost every single day. Even the greats like Mariano Rivera threw an occasional two seam fastball or something to keep the betters off balance.

    2. Exactly Burch and I have been saying that for a long time. He is not paid to just hit HR's, he is paid to produce and that can be in many forms. I was a big Tex fan when he came here especially the first few years, however over the course of the last three years it has become more and more evident that he is a selfish player. Knowing the elf he will bring him back next year and it couldn't be anymore evident that with his injuries and his unwillingness to take what is given to him that it is time to move on. Unlike others I don't think that he had an mvp season. Anyone that hits in the 250 range even with numerous home runs and rbi is not a candidate in my book

  3. Tex is out of here after the end of the season, no matter what he does the rest of the year. He forgot the #1-Rule of the Yankees; Winning is everything and everything is WINNING! #2-Do whatever it takes to get the job done!
NY wants to cut salary not add! Plus we have "A Bird in the Wings", so to say!

    1. I just don't see it Reed. I see the Yankees pulling the whole "Greg Bird may or may not be healthy and may need six more months to heal even though everyone else in the league that had the same injury at the same time would be back by now" and I can see them signing Teix to a one year deal near the amount of a qualifying offer, or a QO itself, as "insurance."

    2. I said it before and I'll say it again. The elf screwed the pooch after finding out Bird was done for the year. He needed to get a quality replacement and he needs to do it next year for insurance. I do agree with you Burch the elf will sign him and hopefully some other team comes in and gives him a multi year contract forcing the elf's hand to walk away

  4. I have asked before and I will try it again; Where would we come up with an adequate 1st basemen that we could get for one year or maybe two. Even backup players wouldn't come here for a year even if they could. None of the good ones would sign for one year at the price Hal would pay. No money, no player!
