How Do The Yankees Move On From Patrick Corbin?

How could you turn your back on the Yankees and your family?

Going into the offseason I thought Patrick Corbin being a Yankee was a foregone conclusion. Even with all the chatter of other teams getting involved, my belief never wavered. With that said you might think the news of Corbin signing with the Nationals yesterday would have devastated me, but that's not true.

Sure, it stinks that Corbin (understandably) took more money to go somewhere else. A lefty with good strikeout numbers, who could reasonably be leaned on to start 30+ games, would have been a perfect fit with the Yankees.

Thankfully, not only is there a lot of offseason left, Patrick was not the only good to great starter that's available via free agency or trade. Hell, he wasn't even the best pitcher available.

Did Brian Cashman look at these other options and think "yeah, that would be a good plan b"? Thus saving money that would otherwise go to Corbin in order to go all-in on Harper and/or Machado? I like to think so. Of course, the Phillies are in the same boat, so my prediction is only one of those two will be playing for the Yankees next season. But that's been my prediction this whole time, anyway. This way the Yankees will save more money, which is something Hal has wanted to do for years.

But before I go over those pitchers, I want to reiterate something...

If you can't see the guy starting a game in the postseason, then he's not the pitcher we're looking for. That doesn't mean we need a game one or game two starter (we already have Severino and Paxton), or even a game three starter (Tanaka has been stellar in the postseason), but it's very possible we need this other pitcher to give us a start in a seven-game series.

Not that Cashman shouldn't aim higher, but I wanted to give you an idea of what the needs and wants of the Yankees are.

So let's start with those starters in free agency that may pique your interest...

Dallas Keuchel (LHP)
Dallas is a sinkerball pitcher, but last year he just wasn't getting as many swings and misses as before. The spin rate and velocity of the pitch have been pretty similar to years past, but he did throw it more in 2018 than 2017 (note: Keuchel's sinker was thrown in the strike zone more often than not in 2016, which likely led a bad season). I know some people are down on Keuchel, but I'm a little intrigued.

Drew Pomeranz (LHP)
Drew might come cheap due to a poor 2018 season, which I believe is attributed to the flexor strain he suffered at the beginning of the season along with the left biceps tendinitis in June. Drew lacks a strong third pitch, as he mainly relies on his fastball and curveball, but he does have a cut fastball that could make him a good bet.

Lance Lynn (RHP)
His strikeout rate improved last year, but unfortunately, his walk rate took a step back. That could be attributed to him using his fastball more and his sinker less. I should note that according to spin rates and whiff percentage, both pitches are still effective. I'm not 100% sold that he could get back to the pitcher he was in St. Louis, but it wouldn't be a bad bet.

Nathan Eovaldi (RHP)
Eovaldi is familiar with New York, having pitched there in 2015 and 2016. That doesn't make him a no-brainer here, but it is something to take into account. Now, it's hard to evaluate Nathan since he's a different pitcher than he was before missing the 2017 season after his second Tommy John surgery. Eovaldi used a cut fastball quite a bit in 2018, after having first learned the pitch while with the Yankees, which has allowed his four-seamer to be more effective than ever. I don't know if it's Nathan's previous stint with the Yankees that gives me pause, but I can't say I'd be comfortable penciling Eovaldi in as a starter for 2019.

J.A. Happ (LHP)
Last season he started using his fastball much more and using his sinker much less. However, when Happ did throw his sinker last year it was more effective than in year's past. So while the spin rate on his fastball and sinker has gone down it looks like he's done the smart thing and used them differently to remain an overall effective pitcher. He's clearly not as good as Corbin would have been, but as the #4 starter behind Severino, Paxton, and Tanaka I would feel good.

Free agency is not the only place a pitcher could come from, as some very good names have already been talked about in trades this offseason, and the three biggest happen to currently pitch for the same team.

Although the Cleveland Indians won 91 games last season, and could very well repeat as AL Central champions next season, they've made it clear they are willing to trade away one of their top starters. I'm guessing that they would trade one of them to build up a poor farm system while adding top prospect Tristan McKenzie and/or one of those free agent starters to their rotation. The Indians would surely love to have a guy like Estevan Florial as they have nothing good coming up to fill in center field, a spot they got little to no production out of last season.

You might think the Indians would demand Miguel Andujar in a package, but I could see them not pushing that. Although some scouts see him being moved to right field eventually, the Indians do have a good third base prospect in Nolan Jones.

However, I could see Cleveland being interested in Tyler Wade for second base, especially if they can get the Yankees or another team to take on Jason Kipnis.

Therefore, I believe the Yankees would have to offer a package consisting of Estevan Florial, Tyler Wade, and Jonathan Loaisiga (of course we'd have to give up a pitching prospect), plus other smaller pieces to get a deal done.

Take note that due to losing Florial, I think it's imperative that Brian Cashman extends or re-signs Aaron Hicks to continue in center field.

To be honest, I don't see the Yankees pulling off another big trade this offseason. The package of Florial, Wade, and Loaisiga is very good, but I can't help but think another team will swoop in and offer Cleveland more, or at least a package that fills their needs or wants better. So although my heart is with the trade, I think we'll see Cashman signing J.A. Happ, and Yankees Universe will bitch and moan that he paid too much.

Game Thread: New York Yankees vs. Boston Red Sox 5/8

And just like that it is game time here in the Bronx as we renew this rivalry once again here for the 2018 season. Tonight the New York Yankees and Yankee Stadium welcome the Boston Red Sox to town for a three-game set. In the opener of the series we will watch as Luis Severino takes the ball for the Yankees while the Red Sox counter with Drew Pomeranz. The game will be played at 7:05 pm ET inside Yankee Stadium and can be seen on the YES Network, MLB Network and NESN if you’re in that disgusting Boston Red Sox network. You can also follow along with the game on MLB TV, with the MLB At-Bat app and by tuning into the Yankees radio broadcast with John Sterling and Suzyn Waldman on WFAN.

Game Preview: New York Yankees vs. Boston Red Sox 5/8

Good morning Yankees family and welcome back to baseball tonight as the New York Yankees face off with the Boston Red Sox. I have to think that the worst thing a red-hot team like the New York Yankees could do while they are streaking is to take a day off, but with a team this deep, young and talented the “norm” may very well be thrown out the window at this point. Looking to keep the good times rolling for the Yankees is Luis Severino who will toe the rubber against Drew Pomeranz for the Red Sox. Let’s get to it here in the Bronx.

Severino heads into this start tonight with the Red Sox fresh off the first complete game shutout of his career limiting the Houston Astros to just five hits on Wednesday. Severino has made four starts since seeing the Red Sox earlier this season and is sporting a 1.24 ERA with five walks and 32 strikeouts in 29 innings of work during that span.

Pomeranz has made three starts for Boston since coming off the disabled list and will make his fourth start since the DL trip tonight in the Bronx. Pomeranz has a career 3-2 record inside Yankee Stadium with a 3.12 ERA, a trend that hopefully worsens tonight in the Bronx.

The game will be played at 7:05 pm ET inside Yankee Stadium in the Bronx and can be seen on the YES Network locally, MLB Network nationally and on NESN if you are living behind enemy lines. You can also follow along with the game on MLB TV, with the MLB At-Bat app and by tuning into the Yankees radio broadcast with John Sterling and Suzyn Waldman on WFAN.

Enjoy the game, renew the rivalry, and go Yankees!!

The Holliday Weekend...

Yankees 5, Red Sox 1...

Matt Holliday gets great credit for the win with his three-run homer, but admittedly, this game was about Masahiro Tanaka as the Yankees took down the Sox in the third game of their four game series. Luis Severino may be the trendy new choice as staff ace but Tanaka is showing that he is still the master.  From the first pitch (a called strike), you could tell that Tanaka had his pitches working. I was listening to the NESN broadcasters during the game and they marveled all game at how Tanaka was keeping his pitches down.

The Yankees got on the board first when Chase Headley hit a high fly to left for solo home run in the bottom of the 2nd off Red Sox starter Drew Pomeranz. After the Headley home run, the Yankees loaded the bases but they were left stranded when Aaron Hicks grounded out to second on a bullet that was stopped by second baseman Tzu-Wei Lin. His throw to first easily beat Hicks.

Meanwhile, Tanaka was dealing. The Red Sox didn't pick up their first hit until the top of the 4th when Andrew Benintendi led off with a single to right center.

The Red Sox briefly tied the game in the top of the 6th. The pesky Eduardo Nunez led off with a beautiful swing that drove the ball to left field.  Brett Gardner played the ball of the wall but Nunez slid into second ahead of the throw for a double. Andrew Benintendi hit a grounder to second and was thrown out at first, but Nunez moved to third.  With Mookie Betts at the plate, a Tanaka pitch hit the dirt and ricocheted off Gary Sanchez's glove. Nunez came flying home ahead of Tanaka who was covering. Game tied, 1-1. The Yankees prevented any further damage when Didi Gregorius made a great diving catch for the second out and Aaron Hicks tracked down a fly ball running to the wall for the final out.

In the bottom of the 6th, Drew Pomeranz walked Didi Gregorius on a full count. Chase Headley lined a single to center and Didi slid headfirst into third ahead of the throw from Jackie Bradley, Jr. Runners safe at the corners.  Matt Holliday came up and crushed a Pomeranz pitch with a high fly into the left field stands.  Andrew Benintendi just stood and watched the ball sail into the crowd for the three-run bomb.  4-1, Yankees.

The Yankees added an insurance run in the bottom of the 7th against Red Sox reliever Brandon Workman. Jacoby Ellsbury, who had replaced Aaron Hicks at the top of the inning, roped a shot into left center field. Andrew Benintendi retrieved the ball but overthrew his first cut-off man.  It allowed the couple seconds that Ellsbury needed to safely slide into third for a triple.  Gary Sanchez followed with a grounder between second and third. Eduardo Nunez was going to his right and Rafael Devers went in front of him, moving to his left.  The ball glanced off Devers' glove and rolled into left field. Ellsbury scored on the play.

Masahiro Tanaka came back out for the top of the 8th, but he was pulled by Joe Girardi after the lead-off hitter, Tzu-Wei Lin, singled through the hole into right field.  David Robertson replaced Masa and recorded two quick outs.  Lin moved into scoring position when Didi Gregorius made a bare-handed grab  on a grounder by Mookie Betts but held the ball knowing he couldn't beat Betts to first. Fortunately, Mitch Moreland grounded to Gregorius for a force out at second to end the threat.

Dellin Betances took over for D-Rob in the 9th.  Unlike his last outing, there was no drama this time. After it appeared that Gary Sanchez had caught a pop up  by Hanley Ramirez behind the backstop for the first out, the call was overruled when it was determined the ball had hit the netting.  It didn't matter...Betances struck out Ramirez and the next two batters to end the game.  The Yankees win!

The Yankees (72-63) pulled back to within 4 1/2 games of the Red Sox with the win. They maintained their one-game edge over the Minnesota Twins in the Wild Card Standings.  The Twins absolutely destroyed the Kansas City Royals, 17-0.  The Yankees did increase their lead over the third place Baltimore Orioles to 3 1/2 games.  The O's fell to the Toronto Blue Jays, 7-2.

Masahiro Tanaka (11-10) got the win with his seven innings of work.  He held the Red Sox to five hits, two walks and one run.  He only struck out three, but the most important stat...he didn't allow any home runs. Nice job by Dellin Betances to strike out the side in the 9th.  Matt Holliday was clearly the hitting star with the massive home run but both Chase Headley and Gary Sanchez were 3-for-4 in the game. Plus, Headley had the homer that gave the Yankees an early lead.

Ronald Torreyes, subbing for Starlin Castro, was hitless in three at-bats for his 25th birthday. Castro missed Saturday's game after undergoing a root canal in the morning following the loss of an artificial front tooth sometime Friday night. Despite the lack of hits, Toe made his plays in the field, including his tag of Rafael Devers who had attempted to steal second in the 5th inning.

Credit:  Bill Kostroun-Associated Press

Aaron Hicks left the game after the sixth inning due to tightness in his left oblique (the opposite side of prior injury that landed him on the DL earlier in the season). He'll undergo a MRI to determine the extent of the injury. Hicks apparently felt the tightness while making the running catch of the high fly to center by Hanley Ramirez  to end the top of the 6th. The injury will most likely reinsert Jacoby Ellsbury as a prominent part of the starting lineup. Clint Frazier was in Trenton doing some light work with the Thunder but he has yet to begin a rehab assignment so he's not an immediate option.

Odds & Ends...

The suspension appeals have been heard for both Miguel Cabrera and Alex Wilson for their part in the recent Yankees-Tigers brawl. Both players saw a game shaved off their respective penalties. Cabrera will sit out six games instead of seven, while Wilson takes a 3-day rest (instead of four). Hopefully, it is a sign that Gary Sanchez and Austin Romine will receive the benefit of a one-game reduction when the results of their appeals are announced. Cabrera may have gotten the longest penalty but there's no doubt the cost is much greater for the Yankees given they have something to play for this month.

Have a great Sunday! The Yanks can take the series win today against AL Cy Young frontrunner Chris Sale. They'll need to bring their "A" game.  Go Yankees!

Game Thread: New York Yankees vs. Boston Red Sox 9/2

Afternoon baseball in the Bronx and one of the biggest rivalries in all of the four major sports. How does it get any better than this? Oh yeah, sprinkle in a pennant race and both teams vying for a playoff spot and an American League East Division title and you have all the makings of an entertaining and interesting afternoon between these two ball clubs. In the start this afternoon the New York Yankees will send Masahiro Tanaka to the mound looking to reclaim his “ace” status while the Red Sox will counter with an ace of their own in Drew Pomeranz. The game will be played at 1:05 pm ET inside Yankee Stadium and can be seen on the YES Network, MLB Network, NESN and MLB TV. You can also follow along in your cars and on the radio by tuning into the WFAN broadcast with John Sterling and Suzyn Waldman, Mr. and Ms. Baseball.

Folow us on Twitter by following @GreedyStripes and enjoy the game. Need a win, get a win all while being a thorn in the side of the Red Sox. That’s more like need a win, get a win-win if you ask me. But that’s only if you ask me. Go Yankees!!

Game Preview: New York Yankees vs. Boston Red Sox 9/2

Good morning everyone. If it seems like we just did one of these for these two teams there’s probably a good reason for it. You have to love the day game after a night game, especially in September, but it what it is so let’s get to it. In the third game of this big four-game set the Yankees will be out for blood as they send Masahiro Tanaka to the mound to square off with Drew Pomeranz for the Red Sox. Yankees and Red Sox games are always interesting but when there is something to play for like these two teams have this season the intensity level intensifies by a million. Enjoy the game!

Tanaka has made two starts since coming off the disabled list with an inflamed shoulder and if the right-hander pitches the way he has in those two starts for the remainder of the season the Yankees will be just fine heading into the postseason. In Tanaka’s last start the Japanese-born righty struck out 10 Seattle Mariners in a victory on Sunday. Tanaka has not been as successful against Boston though this season posting a 1-2 record with a 3.32 ERA against New York’s biggest rivals.

Pomeranz has been quite the story for the Red Sox in 2017 after barely making the team out of spring training camp. In his last 14 starts Pomeranz has posted an 8-0 record with a 2.31 ERA helping the Red Sox not only pull away but begin to run away with the American League East Division title.

The game will be played at 1:05 pm ET inside Yankee Stadium and can be seen on the YES Network, MLB Network, NESN and MLB TV. You can also follow along in your cars and on the radio by tuning into the WFAN broadcast with John Sterling and Suzyn Waldman. Say what you will about these two, and I know I have said this a bunch this season, but there is no more beautiful call than a Yankee like Greg Bird, who hit a monster home run on Friday, or Gary Sanchez hitting a home run and hearing Michael Kay and John Sterling call it. Nothing. Better. Need a win, get a win. Go Yankees!

Game Thread: New York Yankees @ Boston Red Sox 8/18

Friday night baseball inside historic Fenway Park between the New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox, let’s get this thing started. In the opener of this big three-game weekend set the Yankees will send lefty Jordan Montgomery to the mound to square off with fellow lefty Drew Pomeranz for the Red Sox. The game will be played at 7:10 pm ET inside Fenway Park and can be seen on the YES Network, MLB Network, NESN and MLB TV. You can also follow along in your cars and on the radio by tuning into the WFAN broadcast. Enjoy the game!!

Game Preview: New York Yankees @ Boston Red Sox 8/18

Well now that I got Jerry Remy, NESN and Red Sox nation all fired up let’s get to this game preview for the weekend. The New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox will spend their second consecutive weekend facing off head-to-head with this particular series coming inside historic Fenway Park. The Yankees lost two-of-three last weekend in the Bronx and will look to turn their fortunes around in this series as they inch closer to the top of the American League East Division. The Yankees will send Jordan Montgomery to the mound to square off with Drew Pomeranz for the Red Sox in the opener which should be an entertaining one to watch as a fan.

Montgomery will make his second consecutive start against the Boston Red Sox after dueling Chris Sale inning for inning on ESPN’s Sunday Night Baseball last time out. Montgomery matches sale over 5.1 innings allowing just one run on two hits in a no-decision and eventual Yankees loss.

Pomeranz faced and beat the Yankees in his last start despite giving up seven hits and three runs in 6.2 innings of work. That start marked the 10th time in his last 11 starts that Pomeranz has given up three runs or fewer in a start.

The game will be played at 7:10 pm ET inside Fenway Park and can be seen on the YES Network, MLB Network, NESN and MLB TV. You can also follow along in your cars and on the radio by tuning into John Sterling and Suzyn Waldman on WFAN. At least they aren’t openly racist and yes, Red Sox fans, if he had to apologize then yes it was racist. Deal with it and Go Yankees!!

Game Thread: New York Yankees vs. Boston Red Sox 8/12

Saturday afternoon baseball in the Bronx is one thing but Saturday afternoon baseball in the Bronx between the two biggest rivals in all of Major League Baseball is another and that is exactly what we are all in tune for this afternoon as the New York Yankees play host to the Boston Red Sox in the second game of their three-game weekend set. In the middle game of the series the Yankees will send their newly-found ace Luis Severino to the mound to face off with Drew Pomeranz for the Red Sox. The game will be played at 4:05 pm ET inside Yankee Stadium and can be seen on Fox Sports One and I believe MLB TV should also carry it, although I am not 100% on that. I am 100% certain though that you can follow along on the radio with WFAN regardless.

Follow us on Twitter by following @GreedyStripes and enjoy the game. Go Yankees!!! Rivalry Renewed.

Game Preview: New York Yankees vs. Boston Red Sox 8/12

The New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox are back at it again today with the middle game of their three game set this weekend in the Bronx. This is going to be a very tough and challenging, but hopefully rewarding, week for New York as they face Boston this weekend, the Mets next week and the Red Sox again next weekend inside Fenway Park. This week will definitely be the week, either way, we as fans look back on at the end of the season and say that this was the turning point in 2017. We can’t worry about the end of the 2017 season just yet today as we have plenty of baseball still to go including today’s matchup that will include Luis Severino taking the mound for the Yankees and Drew Pomeranz taking the mound for the Boston Red Sox. Rivalry Renewed.

Severino has become the Yankees ace this season and looks to secure his fifth straight victory this afternoon in the Bronx. In his last four starts the Yankees right-hander has allowed just two earned runs over 25.2 innings pitched which is good for a 0.70 ERA. During that stretch Severino has struck out 32 and walked just seven batters.

Pomeranz dominated the Chicago White Sox last time out to the tune of one run allowed and eight strikeouts in 6.1 innings pitched. That start marked the eighth time in Pomeranz’s last ten starts that he went at least six innings. During that same span Pomeranz is pitching to a 2.24 ERA.

The game will be played at 4:05 pm ET inside Yankee Stadium and can be seen on Fox Sports One and MLB TV. You can also follow along in your cars and on the radio by tuning into the WFAN broadcast with John Sterling and Suzyn Waldman. Also as a reminder for tomorrow that the game is showcased on ESPN’s Sunday Night Baseball so get your naps in now, it could be a late one tomorrow. Oh, and it is Chris Sale tomorrow for the Red Sox so it could be a frustratingly late one tomorrow. Either way, go Yankees!

Game Thread: New York Yankees @ Boston Red Sox 7/14

Second half baseball in Boston, let’s get to it. Tonight the second half kicks off for both the New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox in the first of a four-game set inside Fenway Park. Rivalry renewed. With these two teams likely to battle it out until the final weekend of the season in the AL East this is potentially a huge series for both teams. In the opener the Yankees will send Jordan Montgomery to the mound knowing the Yankees have some ground to make up in the division, no pressure, while the Red Sox will counter with LHP Drew Pomeranz. The game will be played at 7:10 pm ET inside Fenway Park and can be seen on the YES Network, NESN, MLB Network and MLB TV. You can also follow along on the radio by tuning into either WFAN or WCEC.

Game Preview: New York Yankees @ Boston Red Sox 7/14

Welcome to the second half of baseball here in 2017 and what a way for the New York Yankees to kick it off. This weekend the Yankees and their biggest rivals in the Boston Red Sox will play a four-game set including a huge double-header on Sunday here inside Fenway Park that could go a long way in determining the way the American League East Division shakes up. Divisions cannot be won on July 14th but they can certainly be lost, especially in the Yankees case, so it’s imperative that New York comes out of the break firing on all cylinders. In the first start of this rivalry renewed series the Yankees will send Jordan Montgomery to the mound to square off with Drew Pomeranz for the Red Sox.

Montgomery opens the second half back with the Yankees after a brief cameo in the Minor Leagues before the end of the first half. Montgomery was impressive during the first half of his rookie season posting a 6-4 record with a 3.65 ERA in 16 starts. This will be the first time that Montgomery will be facing the Red Sox.

Pomeranz ended the first half of the season on a high finishing his last five starts with a 3-0 record and a 1.82 ERA. Pomeranz also brings some recent success against the Yankees to Fenway Park tonight as well as the lefty sports a career 2-1 record with a 2.40 ERA in six appearances.

The game will be played at 7:10 pm ET inside Fenway Park and can be seen on the YES Network, NESN, MLB Network and MLB TV. You can also follow along on the radio and in your cars with John Sterling and Suzyn Waldman on WFAN and the WCEC Network if you’re behind enemy lines. Rivalry renewed and a huge four-game series to set the tone for the second half. Let’s get to it. Go Yankees!

Game Thread: New York Yankees vs. Boston Red Sox 6/6

After a couple days off here on the blog and then an off day for the Yankees on Monday we are all back and all ready for a big series with the Boston Red Sox to kick off the week. In tonight’s contest, the first of a three-game set, the New York Yankees and Yankee Stadium will play host to the Boston Red Sox in what is shaping up to be a huge rivalry series. In the opener the Yankees will send Masahiro Tanaka to the mound, Happy Tanaka Day ladies and gentleman, while the Red Sox will counter with Drew Pomeranz. The game will be played at 7:05 pm ET inside Yankee Stadium and can be seen on WPIX Channel 11, MLB Network and MLB TV. You can also follow along on the radio and in your cars by tuning into the WFAN broadcast.

Game Preview: New York Yankees vs. Boston Red Sox 6/6

The New York Yankees are fresh off an off-day and ready to fly back to the Bronx to square off with the Boston Red Sox. Many around the Yankees blogosphere and the internet are calling this a pretty big series for these two teams, well as big as they can be for the beginning of June, as these two teams look to be in a battle for the American League East Division. In the first matchup of the three-game series the Yankees will send Masahiro Tanaka, Happy Tanaka Day Yankees family, to the mound to square off with Red Sox lefty Drew Pomeranz. Rivalry renewed!

Tanaka was not good once again in his last start with the Baltimore Orioles allowing seven runs and nine hits in just 5.2 innings pitched. Something is wrong with Masahiro Tanaka and nobody knows what it is which is the scariest part. In Tanaka’s last four starts the Yankees ace has taken the loss posting an 11.21 ERA along the way. Tanaka did pitch a complete game shutout in his last start against Boston though on April 27 so there is always that little saving grace.

Pomeranz on the other hand is coming off one of his best starts of the season last time out against the Chicago White Sox. In the seven inning start Pomeranz allowed just one run while striking out eight batters. Pomeranz has had his struggles against the Yankees though taking no-decisions in all three of his starts against New York in 2016 while posting a 3.38 ERA.

The game will be played at 7:05 pm ET inside Yankee Stadium and can be seen on WPIX Channel 11, MLB Network and MLB TV. You can also follow along in your cars and on the radio by tuning into John Sterling and Suzyn Waldman on WFAN.

Enjoy the game and as always… Go Yankees!

Game Preview: New York Yankees vs. Boston Red Sox 9/29

The time has come ladies and gentleman to say hello to the Boston Red Sox one last time and the time has also come to hold the door open for them as they leave just long enough to slam it in their faces and watch them break their noses. Too far? Yeah, I’m kind of becoming known for that. I joke of course but tonight’s game is no joke as the New York Yankees send lefty CC Sabathia to the mound to square off with a fellow lefty in Henry Owens for the Red Sox.

Sabathia will make his final start of the season tonight and it comes on the heels of pitching an absolute gem last time out against the Blue Jays. Sabathia has pitched extremely well as of late and has seemed to get better and stronger as the season has gone on but he has little to show for it after four straight no-decisions. The Yankees offense has gone to sleep so here’s to hoping the alarm clock goes off sometime before 7:00 pm tonight in the Bronx.

Owens will make the start for the Red Sox tonight instead of Drew Pomeranz after Pomeranz complained of some left forearm soreness. AJ Preller is somewhere hiding his face. Owens was a September call up for the Red Sox and will make his first start for the club since August 21st of 2016. Owens was 10-7 with a 3.53 ERA in Triple-A at the time of his call up. Oh and by the way, in case you missed it, tonight is David Ortiz’s final start in the Bronx so… no pressure.

The game will be played at 7:05 pm ET inside Yankee Stadium and can be seen on the YES Network and MLB TV. All eyes on Michael Kay and the crew over at NESN tonight for David’s final game in the Bronx as, at the time of this writing anyway, no major sports broadcast will have the game. Oh well, they picked up Derek Jeter’s final game in the Bronx. I’m just saying. Go Yankees!

Game Thread: New York Yankees @ Boston Red Sox 9/18

Here we go ladies and gentleman one last time between the New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox inside Fenway Park. If the Yankees had hopes of making the postseason this year those dreams are likely shot down the drown after losing each of the first three games in this series to Boston. Now New York merely looks to get out of Boston alive and with a victory and we can watch it all go down on ESPN's Sunday Night Baseball at 8:08 pm ET. Tonight's starting pitching matchup features CC Sabathia for the Yankees and Drew Pomeranz for the Red Sox.

The Yankees continue their final road trip of the season before finishing the season at home inside Yankee Stadium with a series with these same Boston Red Sox and the Baltimore Orioles. If you want to see either of those series live and in person before the Yankees are done for good this season clikc the Yankees Tickets link at the top of the blog and secure your seats now with us.

Game Preview: New York Yankees @ Boston Red Sox 9/18

The final game of the 2016 regular season inside Fenway Park for the New York Yankees and only one word comes to mind, Hallelujah. The Yankees have not fared well inside Fenway Park this season nor have they had a fun time against the Boston Red Sox but I guess that's baseball. Boston is the better team and that's just how it goes sometimes. That doesn't mean the Yankees will go down without a fight tonight or this season and that fight continues tonight when New York sends CC Sabathia to the mound in the finale of the four-game series to square off with the Red Sox starter Drew Pomeranz.

Sabathia has been pitching well lately although in many cases he has not received the victory despite pitching well enough to win. Last time out CC threw 6.1 innings allowing just three hits and no runs with seven strikeouts but received a no-decision. Sabathia has pitched to a 2.40 ERA in his last five starts spanning 30 innings pitched.

Pomeranz was in the middle of controversy this week as his former GM AJ Preller was suspended for 30 days due to holding back medical records from his new team, the Red Sox. Whether that affected his performance last time out or not is anyone's guess but his four hits and five runs allowed in two innings against the Orioles was not great by any standard.

The game will be played at 8:08 pm ET inside Fenway Park and can be seen on ESPN's Sunday Night Baseball program. One last time this season inside Fenway Park, one last time. Let's end the Fenway Park part of this season with a victory and end it on a high note. Go Yankees!!!!

Game Thread: New York Yankees @ Boston Red Sox 8/10

Ladies and gentleman it is time to renew a rivalry once again as the New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox continue their three-game set with the middle game of the series coming tonight inside Fenway Park. In the middle game of the set the Yankees will send Nathan Eovaldi to the mound who has struggled a bit inside the historic stadium in Boston but has pitched much better overall after a demotion to the bullpen before the All-Star break while the Red Sox will counter with one of their shiny new toys in Drew Pomeranz. The game will be played at 7:10 pm ET inside Fenway Park and can be seen on the YES Network, ESPN’s Wednesday Night Baseball and MLB TV.

Yankees fans. You have one more game after tonight before we wave goodbye to Alex Rodriguez for the final time in a Yankees uniform. His final game is Friday night in the Bronx against Chris Archer and the Tampa Bay Rays and if you want to say goodbye in person to the Yankees star then click the Yankees Tickets link at the top of the blog and secure your seats now. That’s sure to be one of the few sellouts this season I assure you. Also be sure to look the part while down in the Bronx by clicking the TGP T-Shirts link also located at the top of the blog to not only support the Greedy Pinstripes but to also support the team we all love, the Yankees.

Follow along during this game, the A-Rod finale and any game this season with us by either liking us on Facebook or by giving @GreedyStripes a follow on Twitter. Dr. Jekyll or Mr. Eovaldi? Let’s find out. Go Yankees!

Game Preview: New York Yankees @ Boston Red Sox 8/10

The New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox will continue their three-game set tonight inside Fenway Park with the second contest of the series. Last night marked the return of the Yankees future as the team welcomed Luis Severino back into the starting rotation and tonight the Yankees send a man who hopes to fit into the Yankees future in Nathan Eovaldi. Eovaldi is signed through the end of next season when then he will hit free agency for the first time but the team will cross that bridge when they get there, first they have to tackle Drew Pomeranz tonight’s starting pitcher for the Red Sox and that will be no easy task unfortunately.

Eovaldi has not enjoyed pitching inside Fenway Park during his career which is evident by his career 5.94 ERA and 1.68 WHIP in three career starts. Surprisingly though, due in large part to the Yankees offense obviously, Eovaldi is 2-0 in those starts. Give up ten runs for all I care as long as the Yankees offense can score 11. Am I right?

Pomeranz will be thrusted into the Yankees and Red Sox rivalry tonight as he makes his fifth start for the club since being traded by the San Diego Padres. Pomeranz is still searching for his first victory inside a Red Sox uniform and that would hurt even more if that were against the Yankees so let’s do everything we can to prevent that, shall we?

The game will be played at 7:10 pm ET inside Fenway Park and can be seen on the YES Network, ESPN’s Wednesday Night Baseball and MLB TV. The Yankees have struggled against left-handed pitching all season long which comes as a surprise to me with right-handed additions like Starlin Castro and Robert Refsnyder in the mix but it’s hard to come back from having such a reliance on the likes of Mark Teixeira and Alex Rodriguez only to feel let down and left behind when Father Time finally catches up to them. Oh well, we’re still grinding and we’re still winning so say it loud and say it proud Yankees family… Go Yankees! Beat those Red Sox.
