TGP Awards: Best Yankees Game In 2016

The New York Yankees, like many teams this season, played in 162 long and grueling games this season so that gives you 162 opportunities to name the best game of the season. It’s easy to narrow it down, take the Yankees losses away and you have cut the field down by almost half, and I finally decided on a singular game to win the award. Was it the Andrew Miller strikeout of David Ortiz with the bases loaded causing the retiring slugger to throw one of the biggest hissy fits in all of Major League Baseball history? Was it the debut games for Tyler Austin and Aaron Judge when they went back-to-back with home runs to begin their careers? Or was it the Mark Teixeira walk-off (first walk-off hit in the regular season of his MLB career mind you) grand slam game from September?

Of course it was Mark Teixeira’s walk off grand slam, how could it not be? For Teixeira to do something he has never done in his MLB career for the first time just four games before his retirement ceremony is something special. To do it in the Bronx and against the Boston Red Sox in dramatic fashion makes it that much more awesome but the icing on the cake was the hands up in the air while Brett Gardner dumped purple Gatorade over his head. That, my friends, makes for a classic.

Congratulations to Teixeira on the home run, the award and an amazing MLB career.

Mark Teixeira's Goodbye from the Yankees

Mark Teixeira has officially retired from Major League Baseball with his final game coming yesterday afternoon in the Bronx. Here are a few videos courtesy of Yankees.com and the YES Network from the goodbye yesterday. Goo luck in all that you do, Mark!

Game Thread: New York Yankees vs. Boston Red Sox 9/29

Here we go ladies and gentleman, one last time. The New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox will finish off their season series tonight in David Ortiz’s last game inside Yankee Stadium. I know we’ve joked a lot on this site about him and bagged on him quite a bit but it was all in good fun and our way of showing respect to the numbers he has put up in this game. I covered much of how I feel about him in my letter to him earlier today so I won’t spend too much time on it but I just want to reiterate that it was never anything personal and much respect goes out to you for what you’ve done for the game I love, Major League Baseball. Thank you.

So in the finale between these two clubs this season the New York Yankees will send CC Sabathia to the mound to face off with Henry Owens for the Boston Red Sox. The game will be played at 7:05 pm ET inside Yankee Stadium and can be seen on the YES Network and MLB TV. I’m truly perplexed why no one, MLB Network or ESPN especially, picked this game up. Oh well, what do I know?

No matter what the standings are telling you if you are wearing a Yankees uniform you must beat the Red Sox. It’s an unwritten rule and we wouldn’t like to break an unwritten rule on Ortiz’s final game in the Bronx, now would we? MOON BIG PAPI and Go Yankees!

Hey David Ortiz…. Look At This

…. You are NOT the father.

Game Preview: New York Yankees vs. Boston Red Sox 9/29

The time has come ladies and gentleman to say hello to the Boston Red Sox one last time and the time has also come to hold the door open for them as they leave just long enough to slam it in their faces and watch them break their noses. Too far? Yeah, I’m kind of becoming known for that. I joke of course but tonight’s game is no joke as the New York Yankees send lefty CC Sabathia to the mound to square off with a fellow lefty in Henry Owens for the Red Sox.

Sabathia will make his final start of the season tonight and it comes on the heels of pitching an absolute gem last time out against the Blue Jays. Sabathia has pitched extremely well as of late and has seemed to get better and stronger as the season has gone on but he has little to show for it after four straight no-decisions. The Yankees offense has gone to sleep so here’s to hoping the alarm clock goes off sometime before 7:00 pm tonight in the Bronx.

Owens will make the start for the Red Sox tonight instead of Drew Pomeranz after Pomeranz complained of some left forearm soreness. AJ Preller is somewhere hiding his face. Owens was a September call up for the Red Sox and will make his first start for the club since August 21st of 2016. Owens was 10-7 with a 3.53 ERA in Triple-A at the time of his call up. Oh and by the way, in case you missed it, tonight is David Ortiz’s final start in the Bronx so… no pressure.

The game will be played at 7:05 pm ET inside Yankee Stadium and can be seen on the YES Network and MLB TV. All eyes on Michael Kay and the crew over at NESN tonight for David’s final game in the Bronx as, at the time of this writing anyway, no major sports broadcast will have the game. Oh well, they picked up Derek Jeter’s final game in the Bronx. I’m just saying. Go Yankees!

My Goodbye Letter to David Ortiz

David,

What can I say that 29 other teams haven’t already said to you this season? The truth. Now before you simply wad this letter up and throw it away at least give me a chance to explain myself. When I say the truth I don’t mean I am going to be disrespectful or that I’m going to slander you or anything. Instead I am going to give you a fan’s perspective, specifically a Yankees fan’s perspective, on your career and what comes after you hang up your cleats after this season.

You failed a drug test. We all know you failed a drug test. It may have been “some damn thing you got over the counter at GNC” but you failed a drug test nonetheless. Just admit it. Be the poster child for forgiveness and be the first player with a failed drug test to enter the Hall of Fame. Honestly, I want you to. Set the tone and allow others who did what was in the full spectrum of Major League Baseball’s rules at the time get in as well. I’m asking you to lead the charge and I’m definitely not bagging on you. We’ve forgiven all steroid users here including Alex Rodriguez and Ryan Braun and we can do the same for you, we just ask for a little help and getting the rest of the world and the rest of the game caught up to the idea is all.

You killed the Yankees. You killed them from pretty may day one as a member of the Red Sox. You killed them in the regular season and you killed them in the playoffs. Chill! But really what you have done stats wise, numbers wise and clutch wise is truly amazing. You were a huge part of the team that broke the Curse of the Bambino and you didn’t do it backing in, you walked right up to the Yankees and slapped them in the face four times in a row and you did it a couple times against the greatest closer of all-time in Mariano Rivera. You have to respect that, much respect.

I may not agree with everything that you say or do on and off the field and I have may have called you a baby or self-entitled at times but coming from a Yankees fan that’s got to be the biggest and most sincerest form of respect. You hurt the Yankees? The fans boo you. It’s as simple as that, it’s a rite of passage. Haters keep you famous. You must be doing something right. So as you step into the batter’s box one last time inside Yankee Stadium I leave you with one bit of advice. Blink. Blink and so much will pass you by.

Much love and much respect,

Daniel Burch

Game Thread: New York Yankees vs. Boston Red Sox 9/28

Bet he stole that guitar from his High School too.... piece of sh*t

Here we go again ladies and gentleman with the penultimate game in the Red Sox and Yankees rivalry in 2016. Another season of intense matchups between these two historic teams is set to come to a close tomorrow night with the Yankees honoring David Ortiz’s final trip to the Bronx. Tonight though the team honors the great rookies and players they currently have by kicking the heads in of the Red Sox. On the field of course, not literally. In the matchup tonight the New York Yankees will send Bryan Mitchell to the mound looking to remain dominant again after a fantastic start last time out while the Red Sox will counter with who I called earlier “Mr. Steal Yo Laptop” Clay Buchholz. The game will be played at 7:05 pm ET inside Yankee Stadium and can be seen on the WPIX Channel 11 and MLB TV.

Time to spoil David Ortiz’s going away party this week. Go Yankees!

REMINDER: Two Days Left Until We Moon Big Papi

This is not a joke, nor is this a drill. There is an organization out there trying to get as many people as possible to moon Big Papi during his final game inside Yankee Stadium. What are they going to do? Kick out and lock up 40,000 people for showing their butt to a baseball player? I would hope not anyway.

Head over to MoonBigPapi.com and check out what they have planned. If you’re going to the stadium Thursday night at least consider it, there is no bigger sign of respect for a player that killed the team we love for so many years than to show him our butt’s while he rides off into the sunset.

This is just a reminder. T-minus two days until we moon Big Papi. Be there!

Article Revisit: David Ortiz Farewell Tour Gift Ideas

This post was originally posted back in January shortly after the Red Sox slugger announced that 2016 would be his final season. With the final games of David Ortiz's regular season inching closer and closer I thought it would be interesting to look back at this post as we wait for tonight's game between the two clubs on ESPN's Sunday Night Baseball. Enjoy and add any ideas you may have down in the comments section below.

ORIGINAL POST SEEN HERE:

David Ortiz of the Boston Red Sox is retiring after the 2016 season and despite the “rivalry” that goes on between Boston and the New York Yankees the organization is planning on honoring Ortiz later this season. Now Ortiz has asked to not be honored and has said that he doesn’t want a farewell tour, although if you don’t want a farewell tour you don’t announce your retirement a year in advance but I digress, but apparently that has fallen on deaf ears in the Bronx. The Red Sox have showed much class and respect to former Yankees being honored along the way including Mariano Rivera and Derek Jeter so it’s only right that New York does the same for Ortiz. Hal Steinbrenner says he has no idea what the team is planning to do for Ortiz later on this season so me, being the helpful guy that I am, I have a few ideas for gifts for the old man.

First idea I had was a framed copy of the drug test he failed since so many people have conveniently forgotten about it or have chosen to ignore it. Maybe a framed copy of the Mitchell Report as well but only as a gag gift since he failed a test but wasn’t on the report that was conducted by a Boston senator.

Second idea I had was a substantial gift card to GNC. Remember his post in Derek Jeter’s Players Tribune where he wrote that he probably failed the test because of a substance “he got at GNC in the damn mall somewhere,” he’s got to be missing whatever that substance was. He has kids now and he is going to need all the energy he can get as he enters his 40’s and 50’s.

Third idea I had was a serious one, a substantial donation to an organization that helps young people and young players learn the game of baseball. Ortiz is well known for working with young people and young players not only on their life goals but their baseball goals as well. This is a fun post that is poking some fun at Ortiz but not enough is said about what he does off the field.

Enough of that praising Ortiz stuff though as we bring you the final idea for his farewell tour gift. You ever see those meme’s on Facebook and such that has the children dancing in the village saying that whichever team loses the Super Bowl, World Series or the 2004 ALCS that their championship shirts are shipped overseas and they should be there Monday? We’re going to give him the New York Yankees 2004 ALCS Champions shirt!

Full disclaimer. This is meant to be fun and it pokes at Oritz only in the name of the rivalry and in good-natured fun. I have a ton of respect for Ortiz and the Red Sox organization. Let’s leave it, and the hate, at that.

ICYMI: MoonBigPapi.Com – No This is NOT a Joke

Photo credit goes to It Is High.... Blog

This has got to be the absolute greatest thing I have ever seen in my entire life. MoonBigPapi.com is a movement to honor the Red Sox legend the only way he should be honored inside Yankee Stadium, by showing him our asses before the door hits him in his. I’m actually being a little tongue in cheek right now because I do have a lot of respect for him and what he has done for the game, hissy fits, failed steroid tests, drama with Alex Rodriguez and hugs with former Commissioner Bud Selig aside, but would this not be fitting? Just a little?

Think of it this way. If say five or even ten fans moon Big Papi in his final game and in his final at bat they are likely going to jail after being escorted out of the stadium but what are they going to do to 40,000 of us? Is there enough room in the local jails for 40,000 inmates and detainees that mooned the Yankees most-hated rival inside of Yankee Stadium? I wouldn’t think so. They can’t arrest us all! Moon Big Papi!!!

To join the movement or to check out the website head to MoonBigPapi.com but remember, this is NSFW (not safe for work). Unless your job is okay with bare bottoms on your computer screen, then go right ahead.

Joe Girardi Should Be Fired on the Spot!

You know I’ve been one of the bigger Joe Girardi supporters since taking over for Joe Torre as the manager of the New York Yankees, although that doesn’t mean I haven’t reamed him a new one just like anyone else at times, but I have to say I am a tad bit disappointed in him lately. Maybe disappointed isn’t the word, maybe disgusted? I really don’t know and it’s odd for me to be speechless as you all may already know and I think I’m so beyond angry and frustrated that I don’t even want to rant and rave about it. I just want him fired, effective immediately.

Alex is not the poster child for Major League Baseball like Derek Jeter was or Mariano Rivera was but he in no way, shape or form deserves this level of treatment from the Yankees and from Joe specifically. Joe fills out the lineup card and Joe either has it out for Alex, he’s managing for his job or both because in the grand scheme of things these games are meaningless. The message you sent to a long time Yankee and any potential free agent that is watching this and wondering if he should come to New York is the exact opposite of meaningless, it’s everything.

Not that the Yankees tend to get into the deep end of the free agent pool lately, and not that money isn’t the ultimate motivator for many anyway, but if I am a Bryce Harper or a Manny Machado or an equivalent free agent that had any inkling of an idea that I wanted to come to New York this whole circus and the way Alex is being treated has to leave a sour taste in your mouth, no? It’s leaving a sour taste in my mouth and I’m just a regular guy with a blog so imagine what other players are thinking right about now.

Joe Girardi has gone on record many times saying that it is not in his job description to run a farewell tour yet he had no issues doing so for Derek Jeter and Mariano Rivera. Now granted Rivera went out still pitching like the great arm that he was but Jeter was a far cry from the 2012 version of himself when he finally walked away. He was an automatic double play ball almost every time he had someone on base and yet he continually batted second each and every game. And yeah, Joe said the same things about the farewell tour but what Joe said and what Joe did were two different things. This time around with Alex it almost seems personal and that, Mr. Girardi, isn’t in your job description either. Your job description includes winning games and if you think throwing Aaron Hicks out there every day while Alex sits on the bench just a handful of home runs away from 700 then you should just turn in your uniform and your iPad binder now. You’re fired.

You’re a disgrace Joe and you don’t deserve to wear the Yankees pinstripes any longer. Be gone. Oh and Randy Levine, who undoubtedly at least threw his opinion into the mix because it is no secret that he and Alex are not exactly fond of each other, get a haircut and be gone as well. We don’t want you and we, you know the fans paying your salary and Joe’s salary and Alex’s salary and everyone else’s damn salary, don’t need you either. Goodbye.

Alex Rodriguez’s Final Game Preview: New York Yankees vs. Tampa Bay Rays 8/12

Here we go Yankees family. In a little over seven hours the first pitch will be thrown in the final game of Alex Rodriguez’s long, illustrious and tumultuous career. It’s only fitting that Alex retire with his final game coming in the Bronx but it begs the question, could he not have waited until tomorrow? I mean he has worn #13 since joining the Yankees back in 2004 and tomorrow is the 13th but I doubt he put that much thought and effort into it. I’m a numbers guy so I did. Anyway tonight the Yankees will begin a series with the Tampa Bay Rays with Chris Archer taking the mound to face Alex and the bombers. Opposing Archer for the Yankees will be CC Sabathia. I know Alex is far from Derek Jeter, and in some ways and in some circles that may be a good thing, but you have to think he does something tonight, right? Hits a home run, drives in the game-winning RBI, something. I can’t see our last image of Alex Rodriguez being a four strikeout game and being pinch hit or pinch run for late in the game. Wishful thinking maybe, I don’t know.

Sabathia has hit a skid lately after starting off the season so well which is evident by the fact that the veteran lefty has logged just one victory in his last nine starts. During that time period Sabathia has posted a 1-5 record with a 6.62 ERA and in the two starts in that span that came in the month of August Sabathia has yet to make it out of the sixth inning. All that mixed with the fact that he is facing off against Chris Archer could make this a long game tonight for New York and their fans.

Archer heads into this start fresh off a victory over the Minnesota Twins last time out where he threw six quality innings for the Rays. In Archer’s last five starts he has lasted at least seven innings in three of them despite leading Major League Baseball in losses with 15. That’s definitely more a product of the offense and defense behind him though and less to do with the fact that Archer just hasn’t pitched all that well.

The game will be played at 7:05 pm ET inside Yankee Stadium and can be seen on the YES Network, FOX and MLB TV. Alex has had 15 at bats against Archer in his career heading into tonight’s contest and has just two hits and three RBI against the Rays ace, both of those hits were home runs though. His stats against Archer are not impressive to be fair, a .133 batting average against the righty is evidence of that, but to be fair who has hit Archer well in their careers? Probably not many. One last time Mr. Rodriguez, leave it all out on the field. The fans will appreciate it and so will the team. One last time. Go Yankees!

Article Revisit: Since the Alex Rodriguez Farewell Tour May Never Come

So when I wrote this I fully expected this discussion to never really come up, not anytime soon anyway. This article was written more as a jab at the retiring Red Sox DH more so than to Alex but now that Alex will play his final game of his career against the Tampa Bay Rays I feel like we should revisit this article because now it has meaning. Now Alex is leaving to become a special advisor and member of the Yankees front office and his playing days are all but numbered so just in case the Alex Rodriguez farewell tour never comes, one last time, I’ll give him one today. Enjoy.

Originally written HERE on March 25, 2016

If you’ve been paying attention to Alex Rodriguez specifically, the New York Yankees at all or Major League Baseball in general then you know why there may never be a farewell retirement tour for slugger and steroid user Alex Rodriguez. While Rodriguez may have finally put it all together and figured it all out some people refuse or absolutely cannot leave the past where it belongs, in the past. There were multiple steroid allegations and admissions and multiple lawsuits that came associated with these allegations and admissions including Rodriguez suing the Yankees team doctor Dr. Chris Ahmad and the MLB Players Union that is entrusted with protecting him and his best interest. A lot can happen between now and the end of the 2017 season, look at how far Alex has come in the hearts and minds of many just last season, but since the Alex Rodriguez Farewell Tour may never come to fruition in 2017 I wanted to go ahead and get our ceremony out of the way now.

Who didn’t see the framed Centaur picture joke coming? If you didn’t, you should have. Centaur framed photo etched in gold. Either that or the picture of him kissing himself in the mirror. Why not? You have to laugh at yourself in this world.

On a serious note though I think Alex always wanted to be a true leader, a true Yankee and a captain. Give the man the captain for a day. Yes, I know how some feel about him and yes I know this will be unpopular as a decision but it’s just for a day. Let him know what it feels like. Especially if he has a 2016 and 2017 season like he had in 2015 both on and off the field, in and out of the clubhouse.

Alex donated his $6 million home run milestone bonus to charity in 2015 when he tied Willie Mays on the all-time home run list inside Fenway Park. Alex showed a good faith gesture to the team and proved that he could follow the Yankee way. Give it back, give it back in a donation to his children’s softball team or the Boys and Girls Club or something.

Finally I would give Alex a 2017 World Series ring, wait…. He’s going to give that to us.

Yankees “One More Off Day” Yankee Stadium Music Recommendation

The New York Yankees are off one more day before returning home to the Bronx tomorrow night to play host to David Ortiz and the Boston Red Sox inside Yankee Stadium. Yankee Stadium, the home of the Yankees and the place to hear some differing genres in music when players step up to the plate and enter the game from the bullpen. Players like Brian McCann, the Yankees catcher and a personal favorite of mine.

Every time McCann stands up at the plate in Yankee stadium “Till I Collapse” by Eminem blares in the Yankee Stadium speakers. Enjoy the last day off of the All Star break.

David Ortiz Made a Career Against the New York Yankees

After the success of the first syndicated blog post between Section 36 and myself, both members of the BYB Hub, I wanted to stick to the topic of David Ortiz at least for one more article before we delve into the long, cold winter and hot stove season. Ortiz will not have a similar farewell tour to Chipper Jones, Mariano Rivera or Derek Jeter in my opinion. Ortiz has made few friends with his outbursts, his bat flips, the slowest recorded time to round the bases after a home run, etc. and has alienated a lot of fans around the league, especially in New York. There is no love lost between the fans of the New York Yankees and Mr. Ortiz, not that there isn’t the respect he undoubtedly deserves hidden away somewhere deep down, and for good reason. David Ortiz had made a career out of beating the New York Yankees, and he’s done it often and done it well.

I Split G PA R H 2B HR RBI BB SO BA OBP SLG OPS TB BAbip tOPS+
New York Yankees 224 977 140 254 72 47 158 129 160 .306 .395 .565 .960 469 .324 108
I think this summation about sums it up. Ortiz, thank you. Not for everything you’ve done but for walking away from the game presumably with something left in the tank. You killed us many, many times and none of us will be sad to see you go.

Derek Jeter and Turn 2 Racked Up This Season

Many around the league wonder if the only reason Derek Jeter announced his retirement so early in 2014 was to maximize profits for his Turn 2 Foundation, himself, the Yankees team, his Player’s Tribune blog, etc. When you look at the tally from the 20 clubs that honored Jeter this season you have to think maybe they are onto something here. Was the whole farewell tour an elaborate scheme from someone who is looking to go from being a businessman to a business, man?

When the final tally came in Jeter had raised $367,666.66 for his Turn 2 Foundation. Jeter also made an estimated $9 million in endorsement deals this season which was roughly $7 million more than the second highest endorsed player in Major League Baseball.

Jeter also made money for Major League baseball as in game’s he played an estimated 735,000 fans flocked to see Jeter one last time, an average of 38,761 fans per game. The average ticket price in the majors is $27.93 so Jeter alone roughly brought in another $1,082,594.73 into MLB single handedly. Of course not every single fan that attended these games were there for the sole purpose of seeing Jeter but the average attendance in these games were 8,397 higher than the average attendance in 2014 so you can easily chalk up at least $234,528 up to Jeter alone.

This is all before you consider the money he has brought into the MLB.com shop, Steiner Sports, Movado, Gillette, Gatorade, Nike,  New Era, Louisville Slugger, Heritage Auctions, Visa, Avon, and third party ticket companies like our friends over at Ticket Monster.

Jeter’s impact on the game was substantial both on and off the field and it’s really amazing when you can start to put this impact into numbers like we have seen today. Happy Friday everybody!

ICYMI: Derek Jeter on Jimmy Fallon

Derek Jeter discusses retirement, his farewell tour, and his future plans on Late Night w/ Jimmy Fallon.
