Formula works: Fall behind, and then take the lead…

After two days of taking leads, only to see the Orioles come back to win both games, the Yankees borrowed a page from the Buck Showalter Playbook on Sunday.  They let the O’s jump out to the early lead and then they were the ones who made up the difference to depart Baltimore with a win.  

CC Sabathia certainly didn’t have his best stuff but he did just enough to keep the Yankees in the game.  Even though it seemed like CC was consistently on the ropes, he went six innings, giving up six hits and three runs (two earned).  He walked four while striking out three.  It qualified as a quality start and it was.  Even though CC departed the game with the Yankees trailing 3-2, the game could have gotten away from him but he didn’t allow it.  On the other side, hits were rare against Orioles starter Wade Miley.  He only gave up one hit in five innings, but he walked a high number of batters.  Despite the seven free passes Miley issued, the Yankees couldn’t cash in.  

Ultimately, it didn’t matter for the Yankees as they pounced on the O’s bullpen.  The key hits were the triple by Ronald Torreyes in the top of the sixth, scoring two runs, against reliever Tyler Wilson; the eighth inning home run by Aaron Judge which tied the game; and Starlin Castro’s ninth inning single to center which scored pinch-runner Jacoby Ellsbury with the go-ahead run.  They added three more runs to pad the lead.  For closer Aroldis Chapman it was one run too many as it removed the save opportunity, but Chapman and his 100 mph fastball were still able to make mince meat out of the O’s for three quick outs.  

The best game stat was DH Matt Holliday’s 0-for-0, with five walks.  The last two Yankees with five walks in a game were Mark Teixeira (2009) and Roger Maris (1962).  The fifth walk led to the insertion of Ellsbury to pinch run, which resulted in the aforementioned go-ahead run.

The catch of Aaron Judge’s home run ball in the outfield bleachers by a Yankees fan was also a game highlight.  

The Yankees bullpen was outstanding.  With Tyler Clippard, Dellin Betances, and Chapman each working one inning, they collectively did not allow a walk, hit or run and struck out five.  It was a dominating performance that brought back memories of last year’s No Runs DMC.  Clippard is no Andrew Miller but he certainly did his part.  

It’s always nice to get a win on Getaway Day.  I am sure the Yankees’ flight to New York City was much better last night than if they had returned amidst a losing streak.  It will make for a better mood today during Opening Day at Yankee Stadium. 

Last week, the Yankees had an unusual day off in the middle of their three game series with the Rays in St Petersburg, FL, and it happens again this week. After today’s game, tomorrow is on off day and the series will resume on Wednesday.  Unless you want to hang out at the beach, there are probably more things to do in New York City on a day off than Tampa/St Petersburg. After the series ends on Thursday evening, the Yankees stay home to await the St Louis Cardinals while the Rays have to take a short hop to Boston.  Following no-play Tuesday, the Yankees won’t see a day off again until April 20th.  This does mean that we’ll soon have the announcement of the fifth starter.  As much as I would love to see Jordan Montgomery get the honor, the realist in me recognizes that Bryan Mitchell represents the most likely choice.  If not Mitchell, then Chad Green with a reliever being moved down to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.  Either of those moves do not require any action with the 40-man roster, whereas the Yankees would have to open a spot for Montgomery.  Montgomery’s time is coming, it just won’t be April 16th.

Michael Pineda’s first start was disappointing but he’ll nonetheless get the honor of starting today for Opening Day at Yankee Stadium.  He hasn’t really done anything to deserve the honor but hopefully it will encourage the best possible performance out of him.  If the Yankees can win two of three from the Rays, they’ll be in a much better place than they were just this past Saturday when they stood with a 1-4 mark.  

Congrats to Matt Holliday as he’ll be pulling on the pinstripes in the Bronx for the first time today.  

Unlock the doors at The Stadium…the Yankees are home!  Time to go get another win!

Game Thread: New York Yankees vs. Baltimore Orioles 10/1

Game 161. We won’t waste too much time here unfortunately because it’s a meaningless game for the Yankees. New York is two games away from going home for the winter while the Orioles are still jockeying for position in the postseason and the Wild Card game. Let’s play spoilers and piss off Buck Showalter again, because that never gets old. This afternoon the New York Yankees will send Luis Severino to the mound to make his final start of the season while the Orioles set up their rotation for a potential ALDS by sending Wade Miley to the mound to oppose him. The game will be played at 4:05 pm ET inside Yankee Stadium and can be seen on the YES Network and MLB TV.

18 more innings, give or take, to decide it all. Leave it all out on the field fellas. Go Yankees!

Here we go ladies and gentleman one more time as the New York Yankees and the Baltimore Orioles finish off their three game set this week in Camden Yards. Earlier today we honored Cal Ripken Jr. who tied a Yankees legend Lou Gehrig here in this same stadium against the Yankees and today maybe could be the beginning of something else historic and special. Hey, you never know. Anyway, the Yankees will send Michael Pineda to the mound this afternoon to finish off the series for the Yankees while the Orioles counter with Wade Miley. The game will be played at 1:35 pm ET inside Oriole Park and Camden Yards and can be seen on the YES Network and MLB TV.

Game Preview: New York Yankees @ Baltimore Orioles 9/4

One more time this weekend as the New York Yankees and the Baltimore Orioles make the trip to Camden Yards to complete their three-game set. This series has hurt the Yankees in more ways than one unfortunately both in the player personnel department and in the standings as well. At some point the Yankees need to start sweeping series and this would have been the perfect one to start with. Oh well, go for a victory and head into the Labor Day holiday with the good times rolling again. In the finale of the contest today the Yankees will send Michael Pineda to the mound to square off against the Orioles starter Wade Miley.

Pineda is still having a hell of an up and down season and that continued last time out against the Kansas City Royals. Pineda struck out eight batters without allowing a walk but he did give up five runs in six innings of work. What will happen today? Nobody knows, not even Pineda.

Miley has not been great since coming over to the Baltimore Orioles and we all hope that continues this afternoon against the Yankees. Miley did throw seven innings in his last start and has posted a 3.75 ERA in his last two starts but his starts have still been rocky.

Game Preview: New York Yankees vs. Boston Red Sox 9/30

The New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox will play in the penultimate game of their head-to-head season series tonight in the Bronx on Tanaka Day. The New York Yankees will welcome back their ace starting pitcher to the mound tonight as Masahiro Tanaka makes his first start since injuring his hamstring against the New York Mets. Opposing Tanaka will be Wade Miley for the Boston Red Sox. The game will be played at 7:05 pm ET and can be seen on the YES Network and MLB TV.

• Tanaka will make his first start since September 18 tonight after sustaining a Grade 1 hamstring strain. Tanaka tried to leg out a bunt against the New York Mets and suffered the injury that kept him out almost two weeks. Tanaka has one more tune up before the AL Wild Card start next week.

• Miley is coming into this start fresh off a loss where he gave up four runs. Miley started the game out strong throwing five innings of shutout baseball allowing just two hits before the train came off the tracks in the loss for Boston.

New York has one more game against the Boston Red Sox this season and one more home game during the regular season, that game comes tomorrow night inside Yankee Stadium. The season is winding down and we’re finally starting to get some clarity and assurances about the postseason, a postseason that will include the New York Yankees for the first time since 2012. All they have to do is win, Go Yankees!

For the final time in the "first half" of the 2015 Major League Baseball season the New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox will face off head-to-head inside Fenway Park. The Yankees will head into the All-Star Break in first place in the American League East while the Boston Red Sox are guaranteed to be in the cellar of the same division. The Yankees will send Nathan Eovaldi to the mound this afternoon looking to end the first half on a high note will the Red Sox lefty Wade Miley looks to do the same for Boston. The game will be played at 1:35 pm ET and can be seen on the YES Network, TBS and MLB TV.

Three Yankees are headed to the All-Star Game on Tuesday including Brett Gardner, Mark Teixeira and Dellin Betances while Boston sends Brock Holt to Cincinnati. Game Preview: New York Yankees @ Boston Red Sox 7/12

The New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox finish off the first half of the 2015 Major League Baseball season this afternoon inside Boston's Fenway Park. Boston has played some sloppy baseball this weekend and had all their momentum cut down in a tough loss on Friday night. New York will look to go for the jugular this afternoon by sending Nathan Eovaldi to the mound to face off with the Red Sox starter Wade Miley. The game will be played at 1:35 pm ET and can be seen on the YES Network, TBS and MLB TV.

• Eovaldi heads into the final start of the first half after being pulled after throwing just 86 pitches in his last start. Eovaldi was dominating the Oakland Athletics in that start and has made five consecutive great starts for New York leaving many to wonder if the young Texas-born right hander may have finally figured it all out. 

• Miley is coming off one of his better starts in 2015 where he struck out nine batters while allowing three runs in 6.2 inning pitched, more commonly known as a quality start. Miley hasn't had the same success against the Yankees this season though as he owns a 0-1 record with a 3.65 ERA in two starts against New York. 

After this game the Yankees will send three of their own, Dellin Betances, Brett Gardner and Mark Teixeira, to the All-Star Game in Cincinnati while the rest of the team gets a much needed break. The Yankees bullpen could use a week off, guys like Chase Headley and Carlos Beltran could use a week off to let their little nagging injuries heal fully and the team could use some time off to spend with their friends and families. I love the All-Star Break more than I do the All-Star Game truth be told because the break means something to the team, the game doesn't no matter how hard Major League Baseball tries. Go Yankees!

Recap: Yankees 4, Red Sox 2

Nathan Eovaldi tossed 6 2/3 innings of two-run ball and the Yankees beat the Red Sox again, 4-2, on Saturday afternoon at Fenway Park.

Evo's Exceptional Outing: Eovaldi held the Red Sox to just seven hits and a walk during his time on the mound, striking out two while throwing 111 pitches. The only inning in which he really had trouble was the fourth, when he escaped a two-on, one-out jam with a double play from Mike Napoli. 

Gardner Gets it Done: Heading into this one on a bit of a cold streak, Brett Gardner drove in three with a pair of hits off Boston's Wade Miley -- an RBI double in the second and a clutch two-run single in the fifth. The latter of those knocks broke a 1-1 tie with two outs in the frame, immediately following an unproductive groundout from Jacoby Ellsbury. 

Young and Hot: One of just three Yankees currently hitting above .300, Chris Young gave his club some much-needed insurance with a solo shot in the ninth -- extending their lead to 4-2 with the Red Sox last chance approaching. It wasn't a bomb necessarily -- just reaching the first row of the monster seats -- but it counted all the same for Young's sixth long ball of the year. 

Betances Faces Four, Fans Four: Upon entering with a man on and two outs in the eighth, Dellin Betances went right to work against a quartet of Red Sox hitters -- striking out each on fewer than five pitches to seal the Yankees' victory. The dominant performance earned Betances his first save of the season, and should keep usual closer Andrew Miller available for Sunday.

We Need Better Sunglasses: Losing balls in the sun hasn't proved to be an issue for the Yankees so far in 2015 (snow has actually been a bigger problem), but at least in this contest's bottom of the first, the most underrated obstacle in the game cost the team an out. Indeed, on a seemingly-routine pop-up from David Ortiz, Chase Headley failed to track down the little white thing -- resulting in a gift single to end Eovaldi's no-hitter. 

Next Up: The Yankees go for the sweep on Sunday when they battle the Red Sox in the series finale -- beginning at 8:05 p.m. ET and airing live on ESPN. Adam Warren (1-1, 4.35 ERA) will take the hill for the Yankees looking for his second win, opposing inconsistent Sox right-hander Joe Kelly (1-0, 4.94 ERA).

Game Preview: New York Yankees @ Boston Red Sox 5/2

The New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox go at it again this afternoon after playing just last night in Fenway Park. With a  day game after a night game and the Yankees playing 16 more games in the next 16 days including this afternoon you can expect more than a few regulars sitting on the bench today. One man that will not be on the bench this afternoon for the Yankees is Nathan Eovaldi who is making his second start inside the Yankees and Red Sox rivalry this afternoon and will be matched up with Wade Miley for the Red Sox. The last time Red Sox hitters saw Eovaldi on the mound it was inside Yankee Stadium at the beginning of a 19 inning marathon, an occurrence I think neither team wants to any part of this afternoon. The game will be played at 1:35 pm ET and can be seen on the YES Network, MLB Network and MLB TV.

• Eovaldi was Dr. Jekyll last start out when he faced off with the New York Mets allowing seven hits and four runs in 4.1 innings. The young Yankees right hander has now allowed a total of 31 hits in 21.2 innings in four starts this season for New York. Thank goodness for a strong Yankees bullpen.

• Miley was not sharp either in his last time out as he gave up seven runs, six of them earned, in just 2.1 innings in a Red Sox loss. Miley has not finished the sixth inning once this season for Boston, a trend that we all hope continues this afternoon inside Fenway Park.

The Yankees have a day off of sorts after this game as they don’t face off with Boston again until 8:05 pm ET tomorrow so expect a “Rob Manfred Special” this afternoon if there ever was one between these two teams. I’m sure manager Joe Girardi would like to use as few pitchers as possible this afternoon and take as little as time as possible to beat the Red Sox. As long as we beat Boston I’m frankly okay with it though, go Yankees!

Game Preview: New York Yankees vs. Boston Red Sox 4/11

The second game between the New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox will take place in a couple of hours after these two teams played last night in the Bronx. Last night we watched as Nathan Eovaldi and Wade Miley got their first tastes of the Yankees/Red Sox rivalry and this afternoon we have a pair of now veterans to the rivalry. Adam Warren will make the start for the Yankees who won the team’s fifth starter spot out of spring training and will be facing off with Joe Kelly for the Red Sox. The game will be played at 1:05 pm ET and can be seen on Fox Sports 1, the YES Network and MLB TV.

Warren won the Yankees 5th starter spot this spring after winning a competition between himself, Chase Whitley and Esmil Rogers after Chris Capuano went down to a quad injury. Warren posted a 2.70 ERA in 16.2 IP this spring after being used exclusively as a reliever in 2014. This will be Warren's fourth career start with the Yankees and his first in the Yankees and Red Sox rivalry.

Kelly started the season on the disabled list and will be activated before the game this afternoon for the Red Sox. Kelly suffered right biceps issues this spring which delayed his season but he is healthy enough to bump the original starter Steven Wright back to the bullpen. 

The Yankees and Red Sox rivalry is always fun to watch because even if one team is bad that season they still both tend to bring their “A” games to the field against each other. I expect no different today as the power house offense of the Boston Red Sox faces off with the pitching and defense first minded Yankees in the Bronx. It’s going to be a fun game to watch but it’s going to be even more fun if the Yankees pull out a victory, so let’s go Yankees!

Game Preview: New York Yankees vs. Boston Red Sox 4/10

The fans of the rivalry between the New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox did not have to wait long in 2015 as these two teams face off in just the second series of the season. The first time around the Yankees will act as the home team and will host Boston inside Yankee Stadium with New York’s starting pitcher Nathan Eovaldi getting his first taste of the rivalry. Similarly one of the new faces in Boston in Wade Miley will be opposing Eovaldi in his first start of his career in this intense rivalry. The game will be played at 7:05 pm ET and can be seen on WPIX Channel 11 and MLB TV.

Eovaldi will be making his first regular season start for the New York Yankees tonight after being acquired from the Miami Marlins in a five player December trade. In the deal Martin Prado and David Phelps went to Miami while Eovaldi, Garrett Jones and Domingo German came back to the Yankees in the deal. The hard throwing RHP from Texas set career highs in starts (33), IP (199.2) and K’s (142) in 2014 and will look to improve on that in 2015 under Yankees pitching coach Larry Rothschild.

Miley also makes his debut for the Boston Red Sox after being acquired from the Arizona Diamondbacks over the winter. Miley has one start inside Yankee Stadium as a member of the Diamondbacks in his career when he posted a no decision allowing four hits and three runs over 6.2 IP with Arizona.

The Yankees and Red Sox play two totally different games it seems like early in the season as the Red Sox are content with outslugging teams while the Yankees look like they will have to scrimp and scrap for every run they score in 2015. It should be an interesting series for both teams and it should be even more interesting for the fans. I look forward to the first awkward exchange between the Yankees DH Alex Rodriguez and the Red Sox DH David Ortiz, if there even is one.
