Quick Hit: Yankees Sign Nick Noonan

The New York Yankees have announced that the team has signed Triple-A infielder Nick Noonan away from the San Francisco Giants. Noonan is listed as a second baseman but has spent time at shortstop in the past and that's where the Yankees see the most value. Noonan is 25 years old and is expected to get an extended look in Spring Training this season for New York. Welcome to the family, Nick!

  1. Another dumpster dive move just like last year with Dean Ana. How did that work out for us?

    1. Anna was brought up to compete for a major league spot. This is a true AAA depth/insurance policy. Noonan won't be winning a spot out of Spring Training probably no matter what he does.

All teams make signings like this and they can't hurt. It's the Jose De Paula signing a major league deals that makes me scratch my head at Cashman sometimes.

  2. Agreed Ken. All this move means is that either Refsnyder or Pirela is starting the year at aaa. Maybe both.

    1. I think the third base market dictates that more then this signing does. If we sign Headley then Prado starts at 2B and Refsnyder is in AAA. I don't think if the season started tomorrow Noonan breaks camp with the Yankees.

    2. I'll believe it when I see it. I've just watched this team screw over prospects way too many times to be optimistic.

    3. That part is definitely true. I originally had the same thoughts when everyone started throwing the Chase Utley comparisons out there. With Pirela and Ryan "locks" on the bench I didn't figure there would be much room.

    4. I don't think Prado is the answer at third, can he fill in there..yes but eventually if he plays there enough his flaws will be uncovered. To me he is a 2nd baseman and Refsnyder is a defensive liability at this point as the Yanks aren't really sure what his position is. I still think Noonan was brought in to be a third baseman candidate and could fill the spot on the bench as utility specialist.

  3. Ken, I agree. Prado at third is not the answer. Daniel has said this many times, but it's worth repeating. Designating a position for Prado takes away his biggest asset, which is his versatility. Keep him as a super utility guy. Between Arod, Teix, Beltran, and whoever starts at second, he'll easily get 500+ at bats.
