Game Thread: New York Yankees vs. Chicago White Sox 4/17

Game time ladies and gentleman as the New York Yankees play host to the Chicago White Sox in the first of a three-game set here in the Bronx this week. The best news about this series is what you ask? Well if it’s not the fact that the Yankees will be missing Jose Quintana this week, although he didn’t pitch all that well over the weekend to be completely honest, then I don’t know what it is. One pitcher they will be seeing though is Derek Holland who takes the bump for Chicago while the Yankees counter with Jordan Montgomery who is making his second MLB start. The game will be played at 7:05 pm ET inside Yankee Stadium and can be seen on the YES Network and MLB TV while you can also follow along on the radio with WFAN.

Follow along with us all game and season long while interacting with us as well on Twitter by giving @GreedyStripes a follow. Have fun and as always, Go Yankees!

  1. I have seen enough of Chris Carter. What a waste of 3 million dollars. This guy is pathetic and the experiment needs to end. Put Holiday at first base when not in the DH spot. I can't watch this guy anymore

  2. Don't be soooo negative. When Austin cones back healthy hopefully he's brought back and Carter is dealt.

    1. No one is going to deal for him who are you kidding. No one wanted to sign him except for the king of dumpster diving

    2. I'm about done watching Carter as well. In fact, I need a couple of things explained to me, because I clearly don't get it. Why is Carter signed while Refsnyder is sent to AAA? Refsnyder plays a better first base and provides better at bats. And why does Bird get dropped in the lineup because of a slow start, while the pathetic Carter still bats cleanup?

    3. I couldn't agree with you more, however I'm sure Reed will have an explanation and I can't wait to hear it. This experiment needs to end now

    4. Because Carter has averaged 40hr a year for the last 3 seasons. That's the only reason, potential bench pop. Unfortunately, it seems he needs more playing time to get that.

You win some you lose some. At least it's not Holliday playing poorly, that would be a 15 million dollar waste.

And a few years ago, I'm sure we paid a similar amount to swisher to sit in AAA. 3 mil in baseball is peanuts.

    6. Ya so that was last year. We are not in a last year league. If the guy was such a great pickup why wasn't there any other takers for him until the dumpster diver swept him off his feet. Once again you have the Elf trying to be Maddon like which is to show everyone they are smarter than you. I wonder if Maddon had a wakeup moment in the WS too show he isn't

    7. That was last year! Hans, I've seen you preach probably 200 times that a player plays to the back of their baseball cards! So in carter's case, an average of 0.220 with 30-40 HR a season! We shouldn't be making that much of an issue over a bench player. We have sanchez, didi, and Austin all out with injuries right now, so really I think Austin would be taking that spot. I don't think running refsnyder out there for the 26 at bats chris carter has gotten will make much of a difference.

    8. Totally disagree with you Daryl. Refsyner puts the ball in play. Carter is Dave Kingman. So I have a question for you Daryl. If this was such a good pickup why did it take till high before Spring training for him to sign?

    9. What are you talking about "if this was such a good pickup". All Im saying is your making a big deal out of the last spot on the 25 man roster, and in baseball terms, 3 million dollars is nothing. I even said "you win some, you lose some".
The 3 million for 1 year is nothing when you're talking new York yankees, especially when priority #1 is to get below luxury cap.

Do you seriously think the success or failure of the 2017 New York Yankees lays on the success or failure of Refsnyder or Chris Carter?

      Delete
    10. by the way- I quickly ordered importance of each player on the 25 man, regarding their significance on success or failure of the team. the top 5- tanaka, sabathia, pineda, betances, chapman. the bottom 5, from least significant to slightly less insignificant: layne, shreve, kozma, chris carter, torreyes.

and one more thing- torreyes is playing a lot right now because of didi's injury. that will stop soon. Hence his low position. Even then, torreyes just made a great grab that likely saved two runs from scoring, I think it was yesterday. a play refs would never make.

    11. I have no idea what your malfunction is Daryl. This guy sucks and I can give a rats ass about the 3 million dollars. If you had any idea you would see that A) Refsnyder gives you more in the way of putting the ball in play. Do you not comprehend that? Its not an all or everything with this guy. Newsflash Daryl singles and doubles are nice too

      Delete
    12. No one is comparing Refsynder to Torreyes. Seriously Daryl where are you coming from? My point is that he gives you nothing in the field and Refsnyder though not the greatest defender is just as equal at 1b at Carter and oh by the way he can play 2nd and RF and LF. Can Carter do those things? Believe it or not Refsnyder also gives you more opportunities with the bat. why don't you see that?

      Delete
    13. No Ken, I don't know what your "malfunction" is. We get it, you hate cashman. I know you're passionate, and that's a good thing! And we all know carter stinks. I believe he is let go sooner rather than later.

To me, refsnyder is fair enough in the field and should be on the bench. I'd be fine with that. But like ive said 10 times, this carter vs. refsnyder is a moot point. Whatever reason, the Yankees or cashman doesn't like refsynder. Do YOU not comprehend that? I wouldn't be surprised if refsnyder never has an at bat for the big league Pin Stripes again.

What I see happening- Chris Carter gets let go allowing Austin to come back, Kozma is brought DFA and comes back for minor league depth when didi is healthy, refsnyder is traded for some fringe Low A pitching prospect to clear a 40 man spot, which is then taken by tyler wade, currently the best hitter in Scranton, that is a significantly better fielder. and no doubt in my mind he can play SS, 2nd, OF in a pinch.

      Delete
    14. No Daryl I'm afraid you STILL don't get it. This is not a Cashman thing. This is about what's best for the team and what a player can and can't do for the team. You are landlocked with Carter, you are not landlocked with Refsnyder. That's your major malfunction. You don't get it.

    15. I was 100% for releasing Arod and benching Texeira in 2016, essentially getting rid of ... 60 million dollars? And that was much more significant (both in salary and in importance to the 25 man/ to the team) than Carter.

IN 2015, I was flipping a shit over stephen drew, and wanted Refsnyder there. Drew was putrid, and finished the season with like 500 at bats! That's a lot! Refsnyder should have 100% been in there.

I understand, yes we want the best team on the field. I agree, if you are comparing refsnyder vs. carter, I would go with refsnyder because carter is horrible.
      but
1- I don't think carter will have 100 at bats this season with the yankees. I think it's a matter of time.
2- why is this a carter OR refsnyder issue? why isn't this a carter vs. austin, or a carter vs. wade thing? Out of this group (less carter), austin has the power potential, wade has the best glove and OBP, and refsnyder is so-so and on his 3rd year of AAA.

      Delete
    16. First off its not a Carter Refsynder issue. Its just a Carter issue. I was trying to point out to you numerous times that Refsnyder brings more flexibility to the lineup with a better stick. I don't care which kid it is I just want Carter out.

  3. Chris Carter: I tried very hard to justify their thinking
    on this signing.

The 40 plus home runs are very enticing. But, the awful amount of
strike-outs should have given them pause.

Carter needs to play everyday to play sharp, and collect the long balls.

Unless they thought Bird would not cut it, and Carter was insurance?
Carter can not play 1-2 games a week, and contribute. Not his fault.

Chris Carter is finding himself as a short timer on this interesting
2017 squad. Too bad.....Again, not his fault.

    1. Its the elf's fault. Put Holiday in to spell Bird. It's only three million dollars which I would've rather seen them donate that to a great cause, like wounded warrior or to a homeless shelter. I agree with Levin we could've had RR filling that void and he is a better hitter than Carter and I'm surprised the Coupon Clipper didn't get involved as RR saves the team money. Terrible signing

    2. Well Ken H, you have always said "go by the back of their cards", so if I were smart enough to following that thinking, it would be a fine signing...right?
More than a baseball card comes into signing a player...I think anyhow.
You are right, it was a very bad signing...so far! Tomorrow is another day, let's hope he starts living up to his card!
Be happy the run had to stop sometime, right?

      Delete
    3. Hr's are not the be all end all Reed so the back of the card would say no don't sign him. He is weak defensively and his strikeout ratio is off the charts so no you don't sign the guy. We live in a world of OBS and he brings nothing to the table

      Delete
    4. I agree, Carter is a waste of space but there is nothing we (as fans) can do about it. You, young man have to learn to, "live with what is" and not "what should be"! It took me a job or two to learn it the hard way! WE have a long way to go to 162, have patience!

      Delete
    5. Reed its not a question of we as fans. This is a blog where we are able to voice our opinions. Three of us all believe the same thing about Carter yet when things are spelled out as simple as the sky is blue and water is wet there is push back. As long as I live in this country I am going to have an opinion whether you or anyone else on here agrees with me. You guys don't like it don't respond back thats all. That's your god given right as well. Have a good evening

      Delete
    6. I have scars to prove you or anyone in this country can say or do anything they wish to do as long as it doesn't brake the law!
I don't think I have every said you were out of place with your comments, just that we both have a different way of looking at things.
You want everything NOW and I would like to have everything now also but, I know, trying for perfection takes time and patience. So do with what we have until a change can arrive.
Lighten up and have fun, not many agree with me anyhow, but I have fun being right some times...not often!

      Delete
    7. Thats another incorrect statement about wanting everything now, in fact let me jog your Reed memory. I believe I was one of the people last year that was pushing for the youth movement which would slow down the chance to win a division or wildcard both being pushing back. If that doesn't cry out lets take our time and do it right I'm not sure what does. Next!

      Delete
    8. And also trade this player and that away before we even knew how well they would play in the big time for a better than average pitcher. We already have better than average pitchers why buy one with a "MAYBE" A future star player!

    9. Hans, how are you feeling about Judge? has he changed your mind? I know it's early. but out of Sanchez, bird, and judge, I was most concerned about him, and he has far exceeded my expectations where the others haven't shown up to the game!

      Delete
    10. Its early Daryl, but so far so good. I think Sanchez will be good just not anything like he did last year at that pace. Bird will be ok
