Game Thread: New York Yankees vs. Chicago White Sox 4/17

Game time ladies and gentleman as the New York Yankees play host to the Chicago White Sox in the first of a three-game set here in the Bronx this week. The best news about this series is what you ask? Well if it’s not the fact that the Yankees will be missing Jose Quintana this week, although he didn’t pitch all that well over the weekend to be completely honest, then I don’t know what it is. One pitcher they will be seeing though is Derek Holland who takes the bump for Chicago while the Yankees counter with Jordan Montgomery who is making his second MLB start. The game will be played at 7:05 pm ET inside Yankee Stadium and can be seen on the YES Network and MLB TV while you can also follow along on the radio with WFAN.

So it Seems the Mega Prediction Game Has Begun…

And I missed the first series. What a great example I am setting here, huh? My apologies, AGAIN. Life is complicated and life is hectic right now and my days of staying up until 1:00 or 2:00 in the morning just to update the blog are over. I’m sorry but they are, I’m getting too old for that stuff and too old for that stress.

Anyway we have run a Mega Prediction Game on the blog in every season of its existence and this year will be no different. The details and rules can be found on the prediction game tab at the top of the blog and that is also where you can play the actual game. I hope to see you all there.

I am the defending champion so I guess I should be at least participating in the game rather than being Kari’d every day all season long, huh? I’ll get right on that Kari because I love you.

So it Seems We Have a New Look

My apologies as this was long overdue but the website took a turn in a different direction as far as the looks of it goes. I have finally, and again I apologize, taken the time to update the site’s pictures on the side bars. Gone are the players that have walked via free agency, retired or been traded away and in are some of the new players and prospects that should be around for a long, long time.

The schedule for the 2017 season is updated as is the payroll and roster pages (thanks Bryan!). The Wives and Girlfriends section still needs to be updated while the TGP T-Shirts and Yankees Tickets links are still up and running properly. Also we are preparing for our 9^th season (wow… nine seasons of this) of the Mega Prediction Game which has also been updated on the site.

So check out the new additions, and some of the old functions that have been updated and at least consider joining us on the Mega Prediction Game. It’s fun, although it’s a season-long commitment, and we seems to have a lot of fun with it. I know that I do anyway. I’m a three time champion, Bryan Knepper is a three-time champion and Ken Reed is a two-time champion. Who wins season nine? Stay tuned.

Oh, because Kode, you are still my favorite thing. 

Today The Greedy Pinstripes Goes to School

We are about 12 hours away technically but it was on this day five long years ago that two friends of mine, Bryan Van Dusen and Jorge Maestre, approached me about starting our own shop. For years we had jumped around various sports forums and such, and I even tried to open my own sports forum with little luck, but one thing was for certain in all of us. We wanted our own shop and we wanted to do things our own way, different. For days we threw around ideas such as the Wives & Girlfriends section, the up-to-the-minute payroll and roster pages, the Mega Prediction Game and most importantly the name of the blog.

When we were deciding what to name the blog we had this thought process; If there was a list of 100 Yankees-related blogs, which could be easily done with all the competition around at the time, what name would allow us to stand out? We didn't want another generic Yankees blog and then we remembered my "Get Greedy" campaign from 2008. The Greedy Pinstripes were born and we bought the domain that night. Tonight, just five years ago.

Jorge has since gone his separate way and I personally miss him. I've reached out a few times, sent invites to be a part of the blog etc. and got little to no response. If you're reading this, once again Jorge, the olive branch is there... grab it. And to Bryan, thank you for pushing me to do this. You were right and I was wrong and there is a first time for everything.

To the fans, readers and followers thank you as well. This is a hobby, no one gets paid for this. Not even me. It's not worth it without your comments, your clicks and your tweets and such. Without your support, and I can only speak for myself here, this isn't worth it. The same goes to the writers here from past to present, you're awesome. You donate your time and efforts here for us and we appreciate you. I can't do it all alone and you guys make sure that I don't have to.

Game Preview: New York Yankees vs. San Francisco Giants 7/23

The New York Yankees and the San Francisco Giants are back for Round Two today in the Bronx as they continue their three-game weekend set in the Bronx. The Giants laid down a bit against the Boston Red Sox towards the end of the week and now send their best three pitchers to the mound against the Yankees this weekend, lucky us. Last night it was Madison Bumgarner taking the mound for San Francisco and today it is Jeff Samardzija while the Yankees counter with Ivan Nova.

Nova has had just one start in his career against the San Francisco Giants and it was arguably the best start of his career. Now while this is an entirely different Giants offense today Nova did toss a shutout back in September of 2013 allowing just six hits and striking out seven San Francisco Giants. Yeah, more of that today please.

Samardzija has not been the greatest pitcher when it comes to Interleague Play during his career which is evident by his 15 career starts, 3-9 win/loss record and his 5.28 ERA. Samardzija has also been pretty home run prone lately allowing 12 home runs in his last eight starts which doesn’t bode well when you are set to pitch inside Yankee Stadium in an afternoon game.

Johnny Cueto moves up a day and will start this afternoon, Samardzija will start tomorrow.

The game will be played at 4:05 pm ET inside Yankee Stadium and can be seen on the YES Network and MLB TV. Coming into this series I had this game as the easiest or most likely to win for New York which means if the past is any indicator of the future New York will get no-hit today. In all seriousness though New York has had success against right-handed pitching this season and have especially had success against Samardzija during his career and most recently while he was with the Chicago White Sox so there is always that to build on. Get a victory, make me look intelligent. Go Yankees, I need all the help I can get here lately. 

Game Preview: New York Yankees vs. Toronto Blue Jays 5/25

The New York Yankees and the Toronto Blue Jays continue their three-game series inside Yankee Stadium tonight with the middle game of the set. Last night the Yankees used the general rule of “if it’s high, let it fly. If it’s low, let it go” against the knuckle baller RA Dickey but tonight they can go back to the simple, yet effect, see the ball and crush the ball over the right field porch tactic. In the matchup the Yankees will send Ivan Nova to the mound presumably pitching for his job once again, remember Luis Severino is set to make a rehab start this weekend although it’s unlikely he comes back to the show right away, to square off with Marco Estrada for the Blue Jays.

Nova threw just 62 pitches in his last start against the Oakland Athletics while throwing six innings of work for the Yankees. Manager Joe Girardi decided to go to the bullpen prematurely despite the fact that Nova has allowed just one run and four hits in those six innings. Tonight marks Nova’s fourth start of the season as he looks to improve upon his 2-0 record and 1.65 ERA as a starter.

Estrada heads into tonight’s start fresh off a strong start last time out where he allowed just one run on three hits and a walk in eight innings of work. Estrada also struck out nine batters in the contest but did not figure in the decision. Estrada has not won a game since April 10^th.

The game will be played at 7:05 pm ET inside Yankee Stadium and can be seen on the YES Network, MLB Network and MLB TV. In our Mega Prediction Game we run here on the blog year in and year out I boldly predicted a sweep for the Yankees this week but you know, I’ll just settle for a win tonight. Then I’ll settle for the same tomorrow. Go Yankees!

TGP Mega Prediction Game Season Eight!!

Wow, SEASON 8!! We have run this thing on a forum that Bryan Van Dusen, Bryan Knepper and I came from before we had the blog and it has been a hit in every single season. I expect no different this year as Mr. Ken Reed comes to defend his title. If you’re unfamiliar with the games I will link the rules below but basically the name of the game is pretty self-explanatory, it’s a prediction game based on points. You have a certain point total you can wager per game and you bet that on whether the Yankees will win or lose all 162 games. The player with the most points at the end of the season wins the game.


It’s an everyday commitment almost and it’s a grind but it can definitely be fun if you are willing to put in the time. You can predict as far out as you want so theoretically you can predict all 162 games today if you’d like or you can do them one at a time. Usually I do my predictions per series because I feel that’s the smartest thing to do but you can do whatever makes you feel most comfortable.


All you have to do is leave a comment in the Mega Prediction Game thread HERE to be involved. Now about those rules……


You will predict the outcome of every game one series at a time. You will predict whether the Yankees will win or lose the game but will also wager a point amount determined by how many games are in the series. If there is a three game series , like the one starting tomorrow, you will be able to wage a 3 Pt, a 2 Pt, and a 1 Pt game. In a four game series you will see a 4 Pt game added. For example:

Game 3 Win - 1 Pt

If it is not predicted before the first pitch of the game then you are penalized your highest point game. If you were to miss the prediction then you would only be allowed your two lowest wagers. There is no minimum so even if you miss two games and want to wager 1 point on the third game then that is perfectly fine. See example:

Game Preview: New York Yankees @ Detroit Tigers 4/22

The New York Yankees and the Detroit Tigers face off for the third time this week inside Comerica Park in what will likely be another pitcher’s duel in Mo-Town. Both teams have pitched well this series and the games have come down to timely hitting, good pitching both from the rotation and the bullpen and fundamentals. Tonight the New York Yankees will look to keep that game plan going with Adam Warren on the mound as he faces off with David Price for the Detroit Tigers. The game will be played at 7:08 pm ET and can be seen on the YES Network and MLB TV.

• Warren has not pitched as well this season when the games have counted as he did when he won the Yankees 5^th starter job in spring training. Warren is coming off a start in which he allowed two home runs in just four innings against the Tampa Bay Rays. Had it not been for the Yankees offense Warren and the team would have taken the loss in the contest.

• Price is coming off a start in which he allowed just four hits and one earned run to a heavy hitting Chicago White Sox lineup. Price earned the victory but allowed his first earned run of the season in three contest after striking out nine batters in eight innings. Price has pitched beautifully this season and has a history of shutting down the Yankees so this is going to be a tough game for the New York offense.

I predicted a sweep of Detroit in the Mega Prediction Game that we run on the blog and while that’s not happening I would realistically be okay with a split. To leave Detroit with a .500 record of 8-8 before heading home to play host to the New York Mets and the Tampa Bay Rays wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world. Hopefully New York can take a big step towards that goal tonight in Detroit with a victory. Go Yankees!

The Daily Dozen - August 5, 2014

The Daily Dozen - August 5th, 2014 Edition
(Twelve Takeaways from LAST Night's Game--since I was tired and wanted to go to bed)

1. Going into this series I predicted Detroit would take 3 of 4 from the Yankees.  If you ever get the chance to check out our Mega Prediction Page...do so...sometimes it can be downright amusing.  I predicted the Yankees would only win the game started by Justin Verlander, which shows just how great their pitching staff really is.  Don't get me wrong, I WANT the Yankees to win every game...but that isn't likely...and if I have to predict them losing every game to have them win, then I will gladly come in last place in the Prediction Game.

I hope this doesn't end up true...

2. Both McCann and Prado hit solo home runs last night.  Man, Martin Prado is already paying dividends isn't he?  He also added his first double as a Yankee in the game.

3. David Price vs. Hiroki Kuroda has the making of a playoff matchup.  Game 7 even.  Both pitchers went deep into the game and did what they were supposed to giving their team a chance to win.  You know, what you would expect during a Playoff Game.  The Yankees are effectively in a playoff situation every night.  Neither got the win, but Price pitched 8-2/3 in his Tiger debut with 10 Ks.

4. Brendan Ryan bobbled a catch in the top of the 5th.  And then he promptly turned it into a barehanded catch.  Good job by Ryan, but then again...I think both Roberts and Drew would have made the play without the bobble.  Kinsler would have made mincemeat of it.

5. Miguel Cabrera has been virtually silent this series.  That doesn't bode well for the last 2 games, because he is the offensive juggernaut to end all juggernauts.  He's 1 for 8 so far with 3 strikeouts and 0 RBI.  Victor Martinez on the other hand is 4 for 8 but has only 1 RBI...and that was in last night's game.

6. I said virtually because Derek Jeter STOLE a hit from Cabrera last night.  Check out this video if you dare! Oh wait...the video I wanted to load isn't available in this country...you'll just have to imagine Jeter jumping up and to his right snagging a sure-fire line drive single or double from Miggy.

7. So the Tigers have a guy named Andrew Romine.  He hit a solo home run last night.  You guessed it, he's the older brother of Yankees prospect Austin Romine.  It would have been cool to see them play against each other, but then McCann wouldn't have had his home run.

8. Apparently the Yankees are back to not being able to score after the 5th inning.  It's frustrating and downright shameful to be honest.  How can a team with so much talent...a virtual All-Star lineup be void of late game heroics? Oy vey...

9. Dellin Betance continues his dominance.  He added 2 more Ks in the 8th inning and of course didn't pitch in the 9th.  Way to go Binder!  Should have been a 2 inning performance for him to give the Yankees the best chance of winning.

10. Chase Headley's defense in the 9th inning.  He saved the ballgame, at least until they lost it in the 12th.  Does anyone miss A-Rod? No? Honestly...I do, but Mr. Headley has proven that he can be a force to be reckoned with both defensively and offensively.  So he can stay....for now.

11. I had flashbacks to a playoff game in Northeast Ohio when Joba stepped onto the mound.  But this time there were no Mayflies and Joba had a beard.  Oh...and of course he plunked the Captain.  Jerk!  I was at that playoff game versus the Indians...and it sucked!

12. The Yankees have now played 16 straight games that were decided by 2 runs or less.  This explains why I have had such persistent heartburn the last few weeks.  No...for real.

Phelps: "Darvish? No Problem, I Got This!" Meme

David Phelps didn't actually say that but you have to think the way he has pitched recently he has to have that confidence every time he goes out to the mound. If Phelps can keep us in the game tonight and the offense can be patient and maybe get into that Texas bullpen I think New York has a shot. If the Yankees swing at first pitches and let Darvish get into a groove then this game will be over by 10:00.

I predicted a victory tonight in our Mega Prediction Game that we run here on the blog and I am barely holding on to second place in the game so Phelpsy, make me proud.

Game Thread: Yankees vs. Angels 4/23

The New York Yankees and the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim will start a three game weekend series tonight at Yankee Stadium with Hiroki Kuroda heading to the mound for the Yankees. The Angels will counter with CJ Wilson who has a career 2.58 ERA in 38.1 IP in his career in Yankee Stadium. The Yankees will need to get to Wilson early and get into that weak and full of holes Angels bullpen. The game will be played at 7:05 pm ET and can be seen on the YES Network, on the computer with MLB TV, and on the radio with WFAN.

The Yankees will send CC Sabathia to the mound to face off with fellow lefty Felix Doubront for the Red Sox. The game will be played at 7:10 pm ET and can be seen on the YES Network and MLB Network, on the computer with MLB TV, and can be heard on the radio with WFAN.

The pitching matchup is Michael Pineda for the Yankees fresh off Pine Tar Gate and Travis Wood for the Cubs. The New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox will complete their four game series this weekend at Yankee Stadium tonight on ESPN's Sunday Night Baseball. The New York Yankees host the Boston Red Sox in the second game of a four game weekend set at Yankee Stadium this weekend. The Yankees will send CC Sabathia to the mound to face off with Jon Lester for the Red Sox at 7:05 pm ET. The game will be televised on the YES Network, MLB Network, can be seen on the computer with MLB TV, and can be heard on the radio with WFAN.

Sabathia is coming off a start in which he allowed four runs and seven hits in six innings against the Toronto Blue Jays last time out but held Toronto to only a solo home run through five innings before the wheels came off. Has CC been reduced to the highest paid five inning pitcher in the history of the league? For the Yankees sake we better hope not. Lester has a career batting average against of .233 against the Yankees in his career with a career .307 on base percentage so all signs point to this being a tough one for the Yankees bats tonight.
