New York Still Working Towards a Jose Quintana Reunion

Remember that left-handed starting pitcher that the Chicago White Sox were said to be shopping all winter long only to hold onto him as of the time of this writing? Remember when the Yankees were said to be in talks with those same Chicago White Sox regarding said left-hander only for those talks to apparently die down for whatever reason? Well the White Sox are back to shopping Jose Quintana and the Yankees are said to be one of four teams still vying for his control.

Joining the New York Yankees who are vying for the 28-year old’s services are the Houston Astros, the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Texas Rangers. The White Sox are asking for a King’s Ransom from whichever team ultimately acquires the southpaw and has even reportedly asked for a huge package from the Yankees already this offseason that included Luis Severino, Jorge Mateo and Clint Frazier. Talk about gutting a farm system but honestly, and this goes to show you how deep the Yankees system is right now, I would make that deal right now if offered.

Let’s face it, Quintana will cost a ton for whoever gets him but you have to look at what you’re getting back while mortgaging your future. Quintana has thrown more innings than every pitcher in MLB since 2013 with the exceptions of Corey Kluber, Chris Sale, RA Dickey and David Price. You’re buying a workhorse. Quintana is the only pitcher in the American League to throw 200 or more innings in each of the past four seasons but it’s more than him just eating innings. Quintana has thrown to a 3.29 ERA during that time while being an integral part of the Chicago White Sox starting rotation beside the likes of Chris Sale and Jeff Samardzija.

So who wins the sweepstakes and takes home the ultimate prize for the 2017 season and beyond? Here’s to hoping it is the Yankees but I’m all out of crystal balls so you’re just going to have to stay tuned.

Here we go ladies and gentleman as the New York Yankees return home to play host to one of their most bitter AL East rivals in the Toronto Blue Jays. In this Labor Day special the Yankees will send Masahiro Tanaka to the mound to square off with the knuckle ball pitcher RA Dickey of the Blue Jays. The game will be played at 1:05 pm ET inside Yankee Stadium and can be seen on the YES Network and MLB TV.

Game Preview: New York Yankees vs. Toronto Blue Jays 9/5

Good morning Yankees family and once again a Happy Labor Day holiday to all of you reading this on this beautiful Monday morning. As we start to kick off our Labor Day festivities one must remember that there is also a game on today and it's the most important game of the season for the Yankees, until tomorrow anyway. In the contest the Yankees return home from a disappointing series in Baltimore to play host to the AL East leading Toronto Blue Jays in a three game set. In the first contest the Yankees will send Masahiro Tanaka to the mound, Happy Tanaka Day by the way, to square off with RA Dickey for Toronto.

Tanaka took a no-decision in his last start due to a rain delay that limited him to just 71 pitches. Tanaka is 4-0 in his last five starts including the rain delayed game and has posted a 1.93 ERA with 34 K's in 32.2 innings during that span.

Dickey will be making his third start of the season against New York today and that might not be a good thing for the Toronto righty. Dickey has allowed five runs in 11.2 innings of work against the Bronx Bombers with 13 K's and six walks in 2016.

The game will be played at 1:05 pm ET inside Yankee Stadium and can be seen on the YES Network and MLB TV. It's about time the MLB schedule makers got it right and had arguably the most popular MLB team at home for a major U.S. holiday like Labor Day. There is nothing more American than the Yankees hosting an afternoon game in the Bronx on a United States holiday. Pay attention, more of this please. Go Yankees!

Happy Labor Day from The Greedy Pinstripes

Happy Labor Day from The Greedy Pinstripes. What is Labor Day? Is it simply an excuse to not go to work and get paid for it? Is it an excuse to day drink on a Monday and grill out with the family and friends? Well kinda, yeah. Labor Day is considered to be the official end of summer and it was a day given to the American worker that kept the American economy and such going.

So thank you to everyone who makes Labor Day possible and thank you to everyone for your continued support of this blog and everything it does. It is truly appreciated. Now stop reading and go start day drinking and grilling out and all that jazz. We'll still be here when you get back.

Game Thread: New York Yankees vs. Toronto Blue Jays 8/15

The New York Yankees and the Toronto Blue Jays are set to kick off their three game set inside Yankee Stadium tonight with a great pitching matchup. In the opener of this series the New York Yankees will send Chad Green to the mound to square off against a tough knuckle ball pitcher in RA Dickey. The game will be played at 7:05 pm ET inside Yankee Stadium and can be seen on the YES Network locally and MLB TV wherever you are.

The Yankees head west after this series so you have just two more chances this week to see Aaron Judge, Tyler Austin and a Aaron Hicks that has someone found a way to hit the damn ball lately which is awesome. Click the Yankees tickets link to secure your seats now and see the future of the team and the franchise live and in person.

Game Preview: New York Yankees vs. Toronto Blue Jays 8/15

Here we go ladies and gentleman. If the New York Yankees are serious about making a run at the second Wild Card spot in the American League it may begin and end right here in the Bronx against one of the top teams in the American League East Division, the Toronto Blue Jays. The Yankees must have a mental block against these Blue Jays as Toronto has done well against New York in recent years but these aren't the same Yankees. The youth movement is here and that continues tonight with the first of a three-game set coming tonight. In the opener the Yankees will send Chad Green to the mound to square off with RA Dickey.

Green will essentially take the rotation spot of Nathan Eovaldi who went on the disabled list after suffering from some right elbow discomfort in his last start. Technically Luis Severino took Eovaldi's spot and this is Severino's turn in the rotation but who wants to equivocate over a day or two, right?

Dickey heads into this start fresh off his second shortest outing of the season and it came against the team that just left the Bronx, the Tampa Bay Rays. Dickey lasted just 4.1 innings due in large fact to the fact that the 41-year old righty has allowed four runs or more in four of his last five starts.

The game will be played at 7:05 pm ET inside Yankee Stadium and can be seen on the YES Network and MLB TV. This series doesn't have nearly the hype that those big series in September did last year but I think this is going to be a huge series for both teams. If New York continues to play well they can knock Toronto down a few notches and make their path to repeating in the AL East a little more difficult while the Blue Jays could make it equally as difficult for the Yankees to make a run at the final playoff spot in the American League. I like the idea of making things difficult for them while keeping the good times rolling. Go Yankees!

Game Preview: New York Yankees vs. Toronto Blue Jays 5/25

The New York Yankees and the Toronto Blue Jays continue their three-game series inside Yankee Stadium tonight with the middle game of the set. Last night the Yankees used the general rule of “if it’s high, let it fly. If it’s low, let it go” against the knuckle baller RA Dickey but tonight they can go back to the simple, yet effect, see the ball and crush the ball over the right field porch tactic. In the matchup the Yankees will send Ivan Nova to the mound presumably pitching for his job once again, remember Luis Severino is set to make a rehab start this weekend although it’s unlikely he comes back to the show right away, to square off with Marco Estrada for the Blue Jays.

Nova threw just 62 pitches in his last start against the Oakland Athletics while throwing six innings of work for the Yankees. Manager Joe Girardi decided to go to the bullpen prematurely despite the fact that Nova has allowed just one run and four hits in those six innings. Tonight marks Nova’s fourth start of the season as he looks to improve upon his 2-0 record and 1.65 ERA as a starter.

Estrada heads into tonight’s start fresh off a strong start last time out where he allowed just one run on three hits and a walk in eight innings of work. Estrada also struck out nine batters in the contest but did not figure in the decision. Estrada has not won a game since April 10th.

The game will be played at 7:05 pm ET inside Yankee Stadium and can be seen on the YES Network, MLB Network and MLB TV. In our Mega Prediction Game we run here on the blog year in and year out I boldly predicted a sweep for the Yankees this week but you know, I’ll just settle for a win tonight. Then I’ll settle for the same tomorrow. Go Yankees!

Game Thread: New York Yankees vs. Toronto Blue Jays 5/24

The New York Yankees and the Toronto Blue Jays are set to face off for the first time in a big three game set between the two clubs. You want to know the best part about the whole ordeal and this series? The Yankees miss David Price entirely as long as the probable pitchers do not change, that alone is a win for New York. Who will be making the start tonight for Toronto though will be a tough knuckleball pitcher in RA Dickey while the Yankees send Nathan Eovaldi to the mound to oppose him. The game will be played at 7:05 pm ET inside Yankee Stadium and can be seen on the YES Network and MLB TV.

To see any of these games live this week head on over and click the Yankees Tickets link at the top of the blog. That link will redirect you to our friends over at Ticket Monster who offer the same Yankees Tickets those “premium” box holders have for a fraction of the price. Nathan Eovaldi is ready to continue “eovolving” so I’m going to get off here and go watch. Go Yankees!

Jose Bautista Gets Knocked Out… Again

Because why not, right? I mean I know I showed this once on the blog already and I am on the borderline of being childish and petty… but okay. Rougned Odors knocks Jose Bautista the hell out… again! Hopefully the Yankees do this to RA Dickey tonight. Enjoy this one last time.

To be honest I just didn't have anything to put here so I figured let's run with it. :)

Game Preview: New York Yankees vs. Toronto Blue Jays 5/24

The New York Yankees and the Toronto Blue Jays has become quite the little rivalry over the past two or three seasons with the Blue Jays rise to the top of the American League East but things are a little different this time around. Toronto is struggling, which granted so is New York for the most part, and these two teams face off head-to-head tonight occupying the bottom two spots in the American League East division. It’s not too early nor is it too late to make a run but one has to start distancing themselves from the other for this to happen and that can happen tonight. In the pitching matchup the Yankees will send Nathan Eovaldi to the mound to face off with the Blue Jays starter RA Dickey.

Eovaldi has been getting better and better while getting stronger and stronger with each start this season much like he finished the 2015 campaign. In his last start Eovaldi was the stopper ending the Yankees two-game losing streak with six innings of one-run ball in Arizona against the Diamondbacks as the right-hander picked up his third consecutive win.

Dickey was not sharp in his last start against the Tampa Bay Rays and will look to continue with his string of mediocrity tonight in the Bronx. In that start Dickey allowed five runs, four of them earned, on eight hits including three home runs in a 6-3 loss to Tampa. Dickey is prone to the home run ball and he’s facing the Bronx Bombers tonight, sounds like a good recipe for a Yankees win.

The game will be played at 7:05 pm ET inside of Yankee Stadium and can be seen on the YES Network and MLB TV. The Yankees have a plan and they need to stick to it tonight. Timely hitting, get an early lead, get into the bullpen and shut it down. With the off day yesterday all arms should be on deck for tonight’s matchup and oh, did I mention Alex Rodriguez comes back tonight? No I didn’t but now I did. Enter A Rod! Go Yankees!!

What Does Strasburg’s Extension Mean for Pineda/Eovaldi

The Washington Nationals disappointed a lot of people not named Strasburg this week when the team announced a seven-year extension for the young right-hander. It was long thought that Strasburg, a former first overall pick by Washington in the MLB Draft, would hit free agency following this season but the Nationals instead locked up their ace righty begging the question how will this affect the Yankees? What will the Yankees do now with their starting pitching both on the free agent market and with their own free agents to be Nathan Eovaldi and Michael Pineda.

This coming offseason’s free agent market took a big blow with the loss of Strasburg with the front runners being Bartolo Colon, R.A. Dickey and Rich Hill. If New York needs another starter next offseason they may have to go the same route they went this season and they may have dig deeper into the trade market. That’s if the team has their eye on the 2017 roster and team and that’s only if they don’t have their eyes on the prize in 2018 and 2019. If it’s the latter and not the former you have to wonder if the team would consider trading either or both of Eovaldi and Pineda this July or offseason.

Both Eovaldi and Pineda are young fireballers that are under contract for the 2017 season and may be the team’s best trade pieces going forward. The Yankees have shown a reluctance to go dig deep into their farm system to make the big trades when they feel it’s necessary and the free agent class is barren leaving the Yankees with little in the way of options. Either they hope to contend or they need to trade and get what they can now rather than later.

If the Yankees plan on contending they could always extend either Eovaldi and/or Pineda but that may have just gotten pretty damn expensive. Eovaldi is 26-years old while Pineda is 27-years old while Strasburg is still somehow just about to turn 28-years old this season and all three pitchers are all upside. If Strasburg is getting $175 million over seven seasons for mediocrity what would Eovaldi and Pineda get? At least $150 million you would have to think which begs the question if they are worth it? Honestly I’m not so sure.

If the Yankees are out of it in July then trade them, if they aren’t then the hard question comes. To extend or not to extend. I don’t have the answer.

Yankees Season Dependent on the Blue Jays Pitching

The New York Yankees are expected to stay relatively quiet this winter with any activity the team sees likely to come on the trade market. The Bronx Bombers, the former kings of free agency, will likely stay away from the top tier free agents and have already seen many names and plenty of dollars come off the board already. New York’s primary concern is waiting out these albatross contracts that expire after the 2016 and 2017 seasons without adding more albatross contracts as knee jerk reactions to what the other teams in the American League East have done. The Yankees, a playoff team in 2015, are also looking to at least compete for a Wild Card and playoff spot in 2016 while this is all going down, will they make it back to the promised land?

The Red Sox are going to be better undoubtedly, although the Yankees finished nine games ahead of them in 2015, and all signs point to the Baltimore Orioles and Tampa Bay Rays taking a step back next season but what about the Toronto Blue Jays? Toronto has already lost David Price to the rival Boston Red Sox but have added a couple complimentary pieces in Jesse Chavez and JA Happ, will that be enough to replace the production left behind by Price? Not likely but one thing is for certain, the Yankees postseason hopes depend on those two arms.

The Blue Jays, assuming the health and effectiveness of Marcus Stroman, are a better team than the Yankees if Chavez and Happ pitch better than they did in 2015. Happ was a big part of the impressive second half push the Pittsburgh Pirates made in the NL Central Division last year while Chavez continued to bounce back and forth between the bullpen and the starting rotation in Oakland. We’ve seen glimmers of hope from both pitchers in the past, and recently mind you, but we’ve also seen both pitcher fail. Fail hard. Toronto needs both of them to compete this season, RA Dickey is not a suitable #2 starter anymore and I can’t see Marco Estrada replicating his 2015 season although I could be wrong, and if they don’t they may be on the outside looking in at the postseason this year.

Sure the Blue Jays will have one of the best, if not the best, offense in all of Major League Baseball in 2016. Ask the Yankees how well that worked out in the 2000’s. For the most part that and 75 cents got you a can of Coke.

Game Thread: New York Yankees vs. Toronto Blue Jays 9/13

The New York Yankees and the Toronto Blue Jays are set to play their third game in 24 hours and fourth game in about 48 hours head-to-head in the Bronx. The series has seen its ups and downs for both teams including injuries to Troy Tulowitzki, the return of Marcus Stroman, the emergence of Greg Bird continuing and the fall of Luis Severino for at least one night. This afternoon the Yankees will send Masahiro Tanaka to the mound in the finale against the Blue Jays starter RA Dickey. The game will be played at 1:05 pm ET and can be seen on WPIX Channel 11, TBS and MLB TV.

The Yankees finish off this four game series today before making the trip down to Tropicana Field to take on the Tampa Bay Rays. The Yankees need a win today and need a series win, or sweep, down in Tampa to keep the pressure on Toronto. To root for the home team and interact with us during each and every Yankees game head over to Twitter and give @GreedyStripes a follow.

Tanaka is the ace and he's ready to set the tone. Go Yankees! Happy Tanaka Day.

Game Preview: New York Yankees vs. Toronto Blue Jays 9/13

The New York Yankees and the Toronto Blue Jays are getting ready to play their fourth game head-to-head this weekend and their third game in less than 24 hours this afternoon in the Bronx. The Yankees will get another tough pitching matchup this afternoon against a tough knuckle-baller inside Yankee Stadium. New York will send their ace Masahiro Tanaka to the mound today looking for length against the Blue Jays starter RA Dickey. The game will be played at 1:05 pm ET and can be seen on WPIX Channel, 11, TBS and MLB TV.

  • Tanaka is making his seventh career start against the Toronto Blue Jays in his career today looking to improve on his 4-2 record and his 2.65 ERA. Tanaka is fresh off his last start where he threw 104 pitches in eight innings in a Yankees victory.

  • Dickey will face off against the New York Yankees for the fourth time already this season and will look to continue a recent streak of dominance against them. Dickey has allowed just three runs in 21.2 innings

New York will travel directly to the great state of Florida after this contest to face off with their AL East rivals, the Tampa Bay Rays. I'm not sure where the Blue Jays are headed after this and after this weekend I'm not sure I care, sorry. Just win and let's get back to the winning way of things. Go Yankees!

Game Thread: New York Yankees vs. Toronto Blue Jays 8/7

There’s no such thing as a meaningless August series in 2015 because parity is in full form around Major League Baseball. That will be on full display this evening as the New York Yankees welcome the revamped Toronto Blue Jays to Yankee Stadium for a three game weekend series in the Bronx. The Yankees will send Nathan Eovaldi to the mound tonight to face off against their second knuckleball pitcher in RA Dickey. The game will be played at 7:05 pm ET and can be seen on the YES Network and MLB TV.

The Yankees play host to Troy Tulowitzki all weekend long and David Price at the stadium tomorrow so be sure to click the Yankees Tickets link at the top of the blog to see these games live. If you can’t make it out to Yankee Stadium then that’s no problem, simply jump on Twitter and follow @GreedyStripes to root like hell for the home team.

TBA is ready to do work and deliver another series victory for the Yankees and I’m ready to keep this high powered offense down so ESPN will shut up about it for a night. Go Yankees!

Game Preview: New York Yankees vs. Toronto Blue Jays 8/7

The New York Yankees and the Toronto Blue Jays start a big three game series this weekend at Yankee Stadium as both teams are fighting for the American League East Division crown. The Yankees have a nice lead in the division, although Toronto has cut into that lead since the All-Star Break and since the July 31st trading deadline has come and gone, while the Blue Jays are looking to make the playoffs for the first time in my lifetime of watching the game. Tonight New York will send Nathan Eovaldi to the mound looking to put another game between the Yankees and the Blue Jays while Toronto will send knuckleball pitcher RA Dickey to the mound hoping to close the gap. The game will be played at 7:05 pm ET and can be seen on the YES Network and MLB TV.

  • Eovaldi has been all you could ask for and maybe some more as far as back-end of the rotation starters the last two months for the Yankees. For most of the summer Eovaldi has not allowed more than three runs in a game, the last time coming on June 10, and has given the Yankees some strong starts this season. His biggest issue has been, and maybe always will be, going deep into games so hopefully he takes that next step forward tonight.

  • Dickey has been red hot lately allowing just two earned runs or fewer in each of his last five starts. Dickey is riding a modest three game winning streak but goes up against a Yankees pitcher in Eovaldi who is getting nearly seven runs of run support every single start so something will have to give tonight in the Bronx.

The New York Yankees and Toronto Blue Jays have 13 more games head-to-head this season including tonight’s contest which should make for an exciting two months of baseball. The Yankees stood pat and relied on their own in Luis Severino at the trading deadline while the Blue Jays took the polar opposite approach unloading a slew of prospects for established veteran players. Which route will reign supreme in 2015? That question begins to be answered tonight. Go Yankees!

Game Thread: New York Yankees @ Toronto Blue Jays 5/4

I got the cure for the Monday's, a victory by the New York Yankees over the Toronto Blue Jays. That is what the team will go for tonight when these two teams go head-to-head inside the Rogers Centre in Toronto. Tonight's pitching matchup will showcase Chase Whitley making his second start of the season in place of Masahiro Tanaka for the Yankees while the Blue Jays will send R.A. Dickey to the mound looking to stop the red hot Yankees. The game will be played at 7:07 pm ET and can be seen on the YES Network and MLB TV.

The Yankees return home on Thursday to play host to the Baltimore Orioles in a four game extended weekend series so be sure to grab your Yankees tickets now for those four games. By clicking our Yankees Tickets link at the top of the blog you can get said tickets for cheap because we won't associate any sort of fees or shipping costs through our partnership with Ticket Monster. If you can't make it to the Bronx then join me on Twitter (@GreedyStripes) and/or in the comments section of the site to interact during this and every single Yankees game this season.

Whitley will take it from here, and for the forseeable future for Masahiro Tanaka, so I will let him have the stage now. Go Yankees!

Game Preview: New York Yankees @ Toronto Blue Jays 5/4

The New York Yankees and the Toronto Blue Jays face off head-to-head for the second time already in the young season with the first series coming inside Yankee Stadium and this series coming inside the Rogers Centre in Toronto. The Blue Jays took two games out of three and basically gift wrapped the Yankees first victory of the season while trying to replicate the Bad News Bears movie but both teams are playing much different thus far this season. The Yankees have won five consecutive series and are in first place in the American League East while the Blue Jays have slipped into the cellar of the division and continue to struggle both offensively, defensively and in the pitching department. Tonight the Yankees will see knuckle ball pitcher R.A. Dickey who always gives New York trouble while the Bronx Bombers send Chase Whitley to the mound looking for his second win of his young season. The game will be played at 7:07 pm ET and can be seen on the YES Network and MLB TV.

  • Whitley made his 2015 season debut last time out as the Yankees looked to add a sixth starter to keep their starting pitchers fresh and healthy. That lasted all of about 15 minutes as Masahiro Tanaka was announced injured during Whitley's start pushing the young RHP into the rotation full time for Tanaka. Whitley threw five innings allowing just one run and one walk with 5 K's in a victory over the Tampa Bay Rays.

  • Dickey hasn't been especially sharp or effective this season although he did make a start in which he did not walk a batter his last time out. Dickey went seven innings matching a season high last time out against the Boston Red Sox allowing four runs including a two run home run to Red Sox left fielder Hanley Ramirez. Walking batters, home run prone, sounds like a great recipe for the Yankees tonight.

Dickey kills the Yankees when his knuckle ball is on so if it's high let's hope the Yankees let it fly and if it's low let's hope the Yankees let it go. More importantly though let's hope the Yankees continue their great play, continue to win and continue to dominate the American League East division. Go Yankees!

Game Thread: New York Yankees vs. Toronto Blue Jays 4/8

Welcome to tonight’s game thread for a matchup between the hometown New York Yankees and the visiting Toronto Blue Jays. The game will be played at 7:05 pm ET and can be seen on television on the YES Network and MLB TV.

Go Yankees and go Pineda! Let’s get win #1 out of the way and put it in the bag.

Game Preview: New York Yankees vs. Toronto Blue Jays 4/8

The New York Yankees and the Toronto Blue Jays face off for Game Two of the 2015 season after Toronto took the game on Opening Day Monday afternoon. The Yankees will look to bounce back today and get their first victory of the season off the right arm of their starter Michael Pineda. Pineda will have to out duel the knuckle baller R.A. Dickey who makes the start for the Blue Jays inside Yankee Stadium today. Both teams had off days yesterday so expect the bullpens to be fresh and readily available if need be tonight in the Bronx.

Pineda heads into the 2015 season finally looking to be healthy after struggling with injuries for his first three seasons in the Bronx. In 2014 Pineda showed glimpses of brilliance  going 5-5 with a 1.89 ERA in 13 starts while holding opposing batters to just a .200 average. Pineda’s control was also on full display last season and for much of this spring as the Yankees right hander simply does not walk many batters, a good recipe for a victory tonight for New York.

Meanwhile Dickey heads into the 2015 season coming off a 14-13 seasons in 2014 where he posted a 3.71 ERA in 215.2 IP. The weather may be the deciding factor in this game as temperatures are expected to be a bit chilly tonight in the Bronx and as we all know from our days of watching the Boston Red Sox and Tim Wakefield face off with New York, the knuckle ball does not like the cold.

The game will be played at 7:05 pm ET and can be seen on the YES Network and MLB TV. As always, Go Yankees!!
