This Day in New York Yankees History 7/3: ESPN Sued By The Sleeping Man

On this day in 2014 the New York Yankees were playing as a part of ESPN's Sunday Night Baseball and one fan was caught sleeping live on national television. Andrew Rector filed a $10 million defamation suit in the Bronx Supreme Court against the New York Yankees, Major League Baseball, ESPN and ESPN's play-by-play men Dan Shulman and John Kruk. Rector, the 26 year old used car salesman, was caught napping in the game and felt like the commentary pained him in a bad light and damaged his reputation. Okay.


Also on this day in 1932 the Boston Red Sox played the New York Yankees on what was a Sunday in Fenway Park. What made this significant is the fact that Boston law outlawed games played within 1000 feet of a church. The Red Sox would lose 13-2 on this day.


Finally on this Independence Day eve you have to wonder what the world would have been like had they had Twitter back then. While the official news that the United States of America had gained its independence on this day would have dropped on July 4th in the 1770’s the news would have likely been breaking today, July 3rd, in modern times you would have to think. Just some senseless thinking on my part that doesn’t really mean much to start your day.

Game Preview: New York Yankees @ Tampa Bay Rays 6/23

Good morning Yankees family. Today the New York Yankees and the Tampa Bay Rays will prepare for the second of a three-game weekend set that will pit Sonny Gray for the Yankees and Wilmer Font for the Rays on the mound head-to-head. Sonny Gray at home scares me, but with the game in Tampa Bay I feel like maybe I can afford to be cautiously optimistic. Maybe. Let’s get to it here inside Tropicana Field down in Tampa Bay.

Gray will look to pick up back-to-back victories for the first time in his year-long Yankees tenure tonight against the Tampa Bay Rays. In his last start Gray was sharp on the road against the Washington Nationals pitching 5.0 innings while allowing just two runs on six hits in a victory.

Font will make his fourth start tonight including his second consecutive start against the New York Yankees. The Rays are stretching out Font which means he will likely be able to go around five innings or so before the move to the bullpen is made after pitching 4.2 innings last time out in New York.

Good morning Yankees family and welcome back to Yankee Stadium, the sight for the next four games between the New York Yankees and the Tampa Bay Rays. In the first of a four-game weekend set here in the Bronx the Yankees will send Domingo German out to the mound to face off with Blake Snell for the Rays. Let’s get to it here in the Bronx.

German has still yet to lodge a victory this season despite pitching well in many of his starts here in 2018. German was especially good in his last start against the New York Mets where he allowed just three runs on six innings of work. German has never faced the Tampa Bay Rays

Snell has won each of his last four decisions which is good for the longest winning streak of his career, it is a shame that this streak has to come to an end tonight here in the Bronx. Over that span Snell has posted a 3-0 record with a 0.38 ERA.

Hello… Mother’s Day Weekend

Good morning everyone and a Happy Friday to everyone reading this on this beautiful morning. This is a special weekend for us all, it is Mother’s Day weekend! Some may be thinking, well my mother passed away or I don’t really have a relationship with my mother, and while that sucks it still is fine. You know why? A person doesn’t have to carry you and grow you in their body for nine months to be considered a mother, or even your mother. Sometimes your Aunt has to pick up the slack, or your grandmother, or a beautiful blonde haired, blue-eyed vixen with an insatiable desire for love has to come in and remind you just how awesome you are. Hell, there are even single father’s out there who have to be both, so never feel like you are alone. Ever. But especially on this day and this weekend.

Make it special and have a great day and a great weekend everyone. Especially you, the mother that my children always needed. The woman in my life I always dreamed for and never even knew it. My rock, my mountain, my world, my everything. My Kari. I love you and I hope you have the very best Mother’s Day.

Game Thread: New York Yankees @ Boston Red Sox 4/11/18

The first game last night was a battle of the aces as Luis Severino and Chris Sale faced off head-to-head and tonight is another potential matchup of aces as the Yankees send Masahiro Tanaka to the mound to square off against David Price for the Red Sox. Game Preview: New York Yankees @ Boston Red Sox 4/11/18

Rivalry renewed. Now while some publications were seemingly worried about the New York Yankees heading into Bean Town at the “worst possible time” I was not one of them. It is generally teams like the Red Sox that make you bring your best because you know you will have to in order to beat them, and the Yankees will look to do that once again tonight against a familiar foe to the Yankees faithful. The Yankees will send Masahiro Tanaka to the mound looking for some Red Sox blood while Boston will counter with our old friend and comrade David Price. I love beating David Price maybe more than any other starter in the league, so make it happen.

Tanaka is coming into this start fresh off a loss to the Baltimore Orioles where the Yankees right-hander allowed three runs in 6.1 innings of work. Tanaka won his first start of the season against the Toronto Blue Jays allowing just one run on three hits in six innings of work and will have to pitch like that again tonight in Fenway if he wants his second victory of the young season.

Price on the other hand has been spectacular for the Red Sox in his two starts this season and has yet to allow an earned run in 14 innings of work here in 2018. That ends tonight, because the New York Yankees offense is not on the same level as the offense Price has faced twice thus far this season in the Tampa Bay Rays. Price has a career 15-11 record against the Yankees in 37 starts including a 4.36 ERA, but a lot of that success came early on in his career and not lately.

Game Thread: New York Yankees vs. Tampa Bay Rays 4/3

Weather permitting the New York Yankees and the Tampa Bay Rays are set to kick off their quick two-game set here in the Bronx. The New York Yankees are also set to open up their home schedule this afternoon welcoming Chris Archer and the Rays to Yankee Stadium. Jordan Montgomery will take the ball for the Yankees in their home opener. This is the first time we will truly and officially see Giancarlo Stanton in pinstripes, and I have to say that excites me probably more than it should. I can’t wait to see how Stanton and others can abuse that right field porch this season. Stanton made it a point to hit the ball the other way more here in 2018 for that exact reason and I just want to see all his work and his plans come to fruition at the rest of the league’s expense. Sue me. The game will be played at 4:05 pm ET inside Yankee Stadium and can be seen on the YES Network. Game Preview: New York Yankees vs. Tampa Bay Rays 4/3

The New York Yankees home opener had to wait a day after the Bronx and much of the state of New York was bombed with snow over the Easter holiday and into Monday morning. Have no fear though for the boys in Pinstripes are here today to kick off their Yankee Stadium schedule with a series with the Tampa Bay Rays. In the Yankees home opener the team will send left-handed starter Jordan Montgomery to the mound to face off with the Rays starter Chris Archer. This should be a fun one, the Yankees are home once again so how could it not be?

Montgomery takes the ball to start in the Yankees’ home opener, just a day later than expected, after an impressive rookie campaign in 2017. Last season the Yankees rookie left-hander started 29 games for the Bombers striking out 144 in 155.1 innings worth of work. Montgomery said this offseason he did so last season without command and use of his best pitch, a changeup he worked with this offseason and spring, giving the Yankees and their fans much hope for improvement here in 2018.

Archer is a perennial Yankees killer and, weather pending, will get another shot to shut down the Yankees this afternoon in the Bronx. Originally the Rays were scheduled to pitch Bull Penday yesterday in the opener, but Mother Nature had other plans allowing the Rays to pitch their ace on normal rest. Hooray for them, but for the Yankees not so much.

This Day in New York Yankees History 11/2: A Legend is Born!

On this day in 1985 a great Yankees fan Daniel Burch was born in Lebanon Hospital in the Bronx, New York. He would go on to co-own and create the "greatest Yankees blog ever" in his own very humble and biased opinion. Hey it was a slow day in New York Yankees history, sue me.

Also on this day in 1964 the Columbia Broadcasting System becomes the first corporate owner of a Major League Baseball team when they bought 80% of the New York Yankees. Dan Topping and Del Webb sold the stake in the Yankees for a staggering $11.2 million at the time. The Yankees would reward CBS with a sixth place finish in the American League and a second place finish in the American League East in their first year of ownership with a 77-85 record.

Apple Watches, Cheating and the Evil Empire

Dammit, why didn’t we think of that? The word “that” is in reference to the Boston Red Sox using an Apple Watch to steal signs from not only the New York Yankees but from other teams as well over the course of the 2017 season. Stealing signs have been around since baseball and giving signs have been around and while it technically may not be against the rules (unless you use electronic devices to do so of course which Boston did) it can be a shady thing to do. To be fair I’m sure the Yankees have done their fair share of it, there were always those allegations that Derek Jeter received signs and pitch tipping from some random guy out in center field which I never truly believed, but this is a Yankees-themed site and it was the Boston Red Sox who did it to New York so of course I’m going to talk about it. Here are my thoughts on the whole debacle. 

I will say that I think it’s great that Boston fessed up to the league about it, honesty goes a long way with me, but I am not so sure that manager John Farrell didn’t know about it like they stated. Sure, I’d buy that Dave Dombrowski and other team executives didn’t know about it but I find it highly unlikely that the manager had no idea what was going on here. Rob Manfred says a penalty is coming and I am interested to see what kind of penalty the league will lay down on Boston for this offense. I mean, what can they do? Fine them? Money is a drop in a bucket to a Major League team. They can’t reverse the outcome of games and they aren’t going to make the team postseason ineligible or anything drastic like that so what could they do? I’m not so sure but I’m not expecting much to be honest.  

Will the league follow what the NFL did when the New England Patriots got caught cheating in “Deflategate” and suspend a player for a huge chunk of the season? Tom Brady was suspended four games, or one-fourth of the NFL regular season, after cheating in the 2015 AFC Championship game while the team was also docked a first-round draft pick so maybe something along these lines could happen to the Red Sox for this scandal. I’m thinking the punishment will be more like “Spygate” though, you know that other time a Boston-area team got caught cheating, when the team was docked a 2008 draft pick in the first round while the coach Bill Belichick was fined $500,000 after filming Jets coaches signals during a 2007 game.  

So what are my thoughts? To hell with the Red Sox. Dock them five-or-ten games and let the Yankees win the division. I’m being a bit extreme and a tad bit sarcastic but honestly something major has to be done. You have executives from teams being charged with hacking other team’s personal files and databases and now there are reports of teams using electronic devices to steal signs. Where does it stop, and more importantly when does it stop? It stops when the league stops it so no pressure, but the future of the game is riding on this decision. A slap on the wrist encourages more cheating but a stern and strong hand nips it in the bud. Stay tuned to see which one we’ll be talking about when the league drops their decision on the Boston Red Sox. 

So it Seems… We Took a Long Weekend

Good morning everyone. Call of the search parties, I’m here and I am alive. Work has been absolutely crazy lately as I work in the heating and air conditioning field. I barely had time to write anything for Friday and Saturday, very little for Sunday and Monday and nothing for yesterday. It’s been crazy and so have these games the Yankees have been playing. Taking two-of-three from Seattle was nice but that Friday night game was so winnable, it hurts. Sweeping would have been extremely helpful with Cleveland coming to town, that series ends this afternoon, and the Red Sox series for the weekend. Oh well, the playoffs are in sight and the August 31^st trade deadline is tomorrow!

I haven’t done this in what feels like forever. HEY YOU!! I LOVE YOU!!

So it Seems… TODAY!!!

Good morning everyone and Happy Friday. TGIF, we made it through another week. This is a very special week for me and a very special day, indeed, as today is my big move. I am moving today. Today is the beginning of everything. Chapter one of my life has been written, the introduction, and Chapter Two starts tonight. I couldn’t be more excited. I couldn’t be happier. It’s our time baby. It’s finally our time. I love you and HEY YOU! It is today!

Game Thread: New York Yankees @ Toronto Blue Jays 8/8

The New York Yankees and the Toronto Blue Jays are just about set to kick off their three-game set this week after the off day for travel yesterday for the Bombers. In the opener of the series the Yankees will send CC Sabathia to the mound looking to turn around his recent struggles against Jose Bautista and the Toronto offense while the Blue Jays will counter JA Happ. A battle of the southpaws commences here in about seven minutes. The game will be played at 7:07 pm ET inside Rogers Centre and can be seen on the YES Network and MLB TV. You can also follow along with the game on the radio and in your cars by tuning into WFAN.

Game Preview: New York Yankees @ Toronto Blue Jays 8/8

The New York Yankees used yesterday to travel and rest and now the team finds themselves visiting our neighbors to the north and the Toronto Blue Jays for the next three games. In the opener of the three-game set we the fans will be treated to a battle of the southpaws as the Yankees send CC Sabathia to the mound to face off with JA Happ for the Blue Jays. These are games that New York must win if they are serious about making a run at the American League East Division crown, no exceptions. Good teams and playoff teams beat the teams they are supposed to beat on their path there and the Blue Jays definitely qualify as a team that the Yankees should beat.

Sabathia heads into his start tonight fresh off a loss to the Detroit tigers back on August 1. In the start Sabathia allowed a pair of home runs over six innings of work in the Yankees 4-3 loss. Sabathia will look to turn that around and his recent struggles against the Blue Jays around tonight in the Rogers Centre as the Yankees big lefty comes in with a 1-1 record and 7.62 ERA in three starts against Toronto in 2017.

Happ has been a quality pitcher for the Blue Jays in his last ten starts tossing seven quality starts during that span including his last start where he went seven innings while striking out 10. Happ is always tough against left-handed batters as he tends to pitch inside so hopefully the Yankees offense is aware and ready for that tonight.

So it Seems We are Back!!

Good morning everyone, Happy Friday and we’re back. The All-Star break always feels like it’s at least one day too long to the fans although I’m sure the players and the players families would disagree. Regardless we are back and the second half kicks off tonight. The clock is ticking and every day that passes by brings us one day closer to the end of the season. Every win is important, every loss is devastating and every roster move is built towards the future in some way. I hope you’re well rested because you’re going to need it as we grind towards the end of the season.

Need a win, get a win.

So it Seems the Brightest Stars Flame Out First…. Or Do They?

You know what they say, the brightest starts seem to always be the ones that flame out first. Do they have to though? I bring this up because I read an article that basically asked the question of whether Major League Baseball jumped on the Yankees bandwagon a little too early and a little too fast. With the Yankees in a bit of a funk right now and with the team  falling further and further from first place I know that many are wondering if this star is about to flame out. It’s not, and it doesn’t have to.

What keeps a flame alive? Constant attention, constant hard word, constant reassurance and constant vows to keep the flame alive. Intentions are great but actions are better. This team is not about to flame out. This team will face defeat many times but it will not be defeated.

So this is a rally call. This star will never flame out. This star will continue to get better and better every day when no one thinks that it can. This star is going all the way and mornings like this morning and days like today will all be worth it in the end. We will all look back and smile as we reminisce and think that Daniel Burch kid knew what he was talking about after all.

So it Seems These Yankees Are For Real?

Now I know I have been saying it since the 2017 season even started but what about you? Is the sample size large enough yet? Has enough time gone by yet? Has the Yankees terrorized enough starting pitching yet? Has their own pitching held their own and excelled enough yet to call this team for real yet? Or do we still have the skeptics and the doubters?

First you hear that the Yankees are doing it against teams they are supposed to do it against, the Kansas City Royals and Tampa Bay Rays immediately come to mind. What do you say when they do it against the Boston Red Sox and the Baltimore Orioles though? What’s your excuse now?

Admit it. This team is for real, this team is legit and this team will stick around all season long. Admit it. Especially you. Hey you, good morning. I love you. 

So it Seems… So Far So Good

One Day down in the new job and they haven’t fired me yet. So far so good! This job is just so tedious and one extra zero or one few digit and I can shut us down for months at a time. It is stressful and will be until I get it down but the important thing is that I will get it down. I will. I have to. I have to keep the lights on, I have a beautiful wife that I have to take to the movies and to dinner for her birthday next weekend. I have to do it, period.
