The Yankees and the 2020 MLB Schedule

Image may contain: 1 person, baseball and text
Graphic incorrectly says "NL West" It should say NL East*
The 2020 season for Major League Baseball is happening, at least where we stand here today at the end of June. What a year it's been, but the return of baseball (at least to me) means so much more than just a return to normalcy. To me, it's a return to everything.

While the entire 2020 schedule has not been released as of yet, we do know that the Yankees will be inside Nationals Park facing off against Max Scherzer and the defending MLB World Series Champions on July 23rd. Once the MLB odds are released, we will be able to see what the point-spread is. The presumed starting pitching matchup on that night will be Gerrit Cole, who will finally be making his Yankees debut after signing a 9-year deal worth $324 million, against Scherzer.

What we do know thus far is that the Yankees will play 10 games each against each of their AL East rivals, as well as a total of 20 games against National League East teams as well. In some capacity, the Yankees will play 10 games each against the Toronto Blue Jays, Boston Red Sox, Baltimore Orioles and the Tampa Bay Rays. New York will also play three games each with the Atlanta Braves and the Philadelphia Phillies, while playing four games against the Washington Nationals and the Miami Marlins. In a bit of a twist, MLB has decided to allow teams to play their "rivals" from their opposing division an extra two times, so the New York Yankees and New York Mets will play a total of six times head-to-head in 2020.

Check back in a few days after the full schedule is out.

The Curious Case of the CC Sabathia DL Trip

Good morning everyone and welcome back to the blog. Just a quick hit for you this morning concerning CC Sabathia and his sudden trip to the disabled list… because I’m not buying it. Now before I dive too deep into this I want to preface that I do believe there are processes in place that prevent a team from simply “Phantom DL’ing” someone for no reason. There is protection in place for the teams and there is protection in place for the players, but with the case of CC Sabathia and his troublesome knees it makes you wonder if the Yankees are somehow taking advantage of that.

Sabathia was placed on the disabled list with knee inflammation, a diagnosis that has cost him time a lot recently over the past few seasons in the Bronx, but I wonder just how inflamed the knee really is. I am sure at any given time, given the status of his knees, if there was an MRI or whatever test the Yankees had run on his knee that there would be inflammation in the knee. It is bone-on-bone essentially and inflammation is just going to be a thing that CC has to deal with for the rest of his life, period. It makes you wonder if the Yankees are taking advantage of that and placing him on the disabled list now before the stretch run of the season.

What benefit would the Yankees get by placing CC on the DL with a phantom ailment? Well, looking at the Yankees schedule you see that the Yankees have a couple of days off going forward that may have factored into the decision. CC last pitched on August 12th against the Texas Rangers firing six innings of one-hit ball in a victory meaning that he would not be in line to start again until August 17th against the Toronto Blue Jays, a start that Luis Cessa will make according to Aaron Boone. After that start though the Yankees have an off day on August 23rd (CC’s next scheduled start) giving the Yankees the ability to “skip” his start and let the rest of the rotation pitch on normal rest. The Yankees may have just found a way to manipulate the disabled list process and given CC at least 10 days’ worth of rest while still allowing him to only miss one start against a sub-.500 team.

I am sorry, but something just seems off here. I am not a conspiracy theorist by any means, but this just doesn’t seem right. Look at the way CC pitched in his last start, that is not the way you pitch when your weight-bearing knee is inflamed to the point to where you need to go on the disabled list. It just doesn’t add up. Something else is up here and I think that something else is the Yankees are taking advantage of the system to give CC some extra rest down the stretch.

I’m not saying that I am not okay with it, but I am saying that if it looks like fish… and smells fishy…

Hello… Off Day

Good morning everyone and welcome to another off day for the New York Yankees. Enjoy them while we can, ladies and gents, because between Mother Nature and the MLB schedule makers there won’t be very many more off days for the team going forward. Rest up, we will need it come September and October.

And my Kari, every day I will spend with you. Work days. Off days. Busy days. Lackadaisical days. Every day, and all days. I love you.

Quick Hit: 2018 MLB Schedule Released

Yes, yes I know this is a couple days old by now but I was busy away at a wedding out of town this weekend and I am just now getting caught up. Major League Baseball has released their tentative schedule for the 2018 season so I thought I would bring it to you in its entirety this afternoon. Major League Baseball will host Opening Day on its earliest day ever, March 29 while the regular season is slated to end on September 30 of 2018. The reason for the early start is due to the new collective bargaining agreement which gives the MLB players three additional off days throughout the season while also meaning October baseball will be playoff baseball only here next season. Here are a few other notable dates and games for you if you don’t want to skim through the schedule.

All 30 teams will be in action on Opening Day for the first time since the 1968 season.

The AL East will play the NL East in Interleague play while the AL and NL Central and West Division will each face off head-to-head in 2018.

The 2018 MLB All Star Game will be held on July 17th inside Nationals Park, home of the Washington Nationals.

The Yankees first 13 games are within the American League East Division.

The first interleague game for New York is April 16 and 17 inside Yankee Stadium against the Miami Marlins. The first game here the Yankees pitchers will have to hit inside a National League Park is May 15 and 16 when the Yankees travel to Nationals Park to take on the Washington Nationals.

The Yankees first West Coast road trip is against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim April 27 – 29.

There will be six games this season within the annual Subway Series with the first three coming June 8 – 10 inside Citi Field. The three games inside Yankee Stadium will be hosted on July 20 – 22.

The Yankees and the Braves, because I live in Metro-Atlanta, square off in the Bronx from July 2 – 4 and the team will not make the trip down to Atlanta in 2018. What a bummer.

Looking at the Remaining Yankees Schedule for 2017

With the latest series all but in the books for the New York Yankees I wanted to take a quick opportunity to look at the Yankees remaining schedule for the 2017 season. In basic terms it looks like the Yankees have a clear shot to the postseason if they play up to the level that they are capable of playing but as we all know, you can’t predict baseball. Shout out to Baseball Reference for their awesome table and image below.

There are definitely some winnable series here in my opinion for New York including the upcoming series with the Seattle Mariners (3 times) , the Baltimore Orioles (7 times) and Texas Rangers (3 times) series, the Toronto Blue Jays (6 times) and Tampa Bay Rays series (6 times) and the Minnesota Twins series (3 games). The only tough, again on paper so keep that in mind, series for New York that are left are the final four games with the Boston Red Sox August 31- September 3 and the Cleveland Indians series which follows the three-game set with the Mariners this weekend. Now I’m not saying the Yankees will win the division because of this “easy” schedule remaining but the team can definitely secure at least a Wild Card spot in my opinion if they play well.

Agree? Disagree? Leave both below in the comments section. Thank you!

So it Seems… Next Week is Tough

Good morning everyone and Happy Thursday.

Next week will be a tough one for the New York Yankees. After the team finishes their three-game set with the Detroit Tigers this afternoon the team will return home to play host to the Seattle Mariners for a three-game weekend set. After the weekend set the Yankees will have a case of the Monday’s as they welcome in the Cleveland Indians for three-games before the final four games against the Boston Red Sox during the 2017 regular season. Needless to say next week is going to be tough for the New York Yankees. The schedule eases up a bit the week after and for the remainder of the 2017 season, more on that later, but this may be the week that makes or breaks the Yankees chances at the American League East Division crown. Stay tuned to see how everything turns out.

This weekend will be a tough one for me specifically because it’s my first weekend away from you. We will get through it like we always do but that doesn’t mean I have to like it. I love you. HEY YOU.

Everyone have a great day!

Game Preview: New York Yankees @ Seattle Mariners 7/21

The New York Yankees and the Seattle Mariners will continue their four-game extended weekend set tonight with the second game of the series. It’s all downhill from here Yankees fans and I think you know exactly what I mean. After facing off with the always tough Felix Hernandez last night the pitching matchups, at least on paper, get a bit easier for New York starting tonight with the Mariners starter Andrew Moore. Now I’m not trying to be disrespectful and I am not trying to write off Moore or any of the other Seattle starters that will toe the rubber in this series but I am more so merely complimenting Hernandez on always being tough and always being especially tough against the Yankees. New York will send CC Sabathia to the mound to counter Moore in the contest. It should be another fun one here for New York, let’s just hope the offense made the trip over this time around.

Sabathia was great in his last start against the Boston Red Sox holding the Yankees division rival to just two hits and no runs in six innings of work in the first game of the doubleheader. Sabathia did walk five in the outing which limited the number of innings he could pitch but was overall effective in a much-needed win for New York.

Moore started out his MLB career with three solid starts for the Mariners before taking a step back a bit in his last start against the Chicago White Sox. In the start Moore allowed five runs on six hits including six home runs in a loss to the White Sox. Moore will be making his fourth home start already of his young MLB career and will look to improve on his 1-1 record and 3.86 ERA inside Safeco Field in his career.

The game will be played at 10:10 pm ET inside Safeco Field in Seattle and can be seen on the YES Network and MLB TV. You can also follow along in your cars and on the radio by tuning into John Sterling and Suzyn Waldman on WFAN. Finally, a west coast game on the weekend that I can actually stay up and watch. What happened to some good old fashioned east coast bias? I’m looking at you MLB schedule makers. Enjoy the game and Go Yankees!!!

Yankees “Hot or Not” After Three Series

There are many variations of this game all over the web I’m sure under catchy little names and such but I am a simple guy and I don’t have time for that. I like to keep it simple so here we go with “Hot or Not” the New York Yankees edition. Please remember that sample sizes will play a huge factor into this and this takes into account just the handful of games we have seen thus far and is not an indicator of future performances. Disclaimers and such. And such.

Aaron Judge is hot right now, so hot. Judge has hit three home runs already this season at the time of this writing and has more RBI than he does strikeouts, which is an accomplishment for him. It’s a huge step forward not only in his development but in his confidence as well.

For every huge Yankees prospect that is doing well we seem to have one that isn’t doing so great and no Yankees prospect is bigger than Gary Sanchez right now, figuratively speaking of course. Sanchez’s season did not start out as planned this season and a strained biceps muscle that will keep him out at least a month didn’t help but Sanchez, like our next “not” player, is one player I just don’t worry about after two weeks of games. Not yet anyway.

Masahiro Tanaka unfortunately is not, he’s not. Tanaka is now having to field questions about his potential opt-out this offseason being a distraction or not just two starts into the season. The New York media is a freaking circus, always has been and always will be.

Speaking of pitching CC Sabathia has been great thus far this season, he’s hot. In what could be his final season in pinstripes the big lefty has posted a 1-0 record in two starts with a 1.64 ERA allowing just two runs in 11 innings pitched. Sabathia is also hitting the mid-90’s with his fastball which shows me his knee feels just fine right now.

Chase Headley, yes not a typo, is hot. Through the Yankees first seven games he was the Yankees most productive hitter and if Aaron Judge ever slows down he may be the Yankees most productive hitter in another seven games. Chase Headley, this is as much exaggeration as it is a typo, has as many hits and home runs thus far this season than he had in the first half of the 2016 season.

Greg Bird had a monster spring where he just hit bomb after bomb after bomb but that has not translated as of yet to the 2017 season, he’s not. In his defense his ankle has been bothering him and when you have lower half injuries it can affect your hitting but he is making Stephen Drew look like a Hall of Fame hitter right now. This will change, I know that, but I just wish it would change now rather than later.

So it Seems Spring Has Sprung

Ladies and gentleman, good morning. Spring has sprung, spring break is over here for my children, the weather is warming up and the grass already needs cut. The Yankees returned home last night for their home opener after limping to a 2-4 start to the season and losing Gary Sanchez but in his place came another glimpse into the future in Kyle Higashioka. Like in life the Yankees will survive and figure it out, they always do. We always will.

So I hope everyone has a great day today. Make it the best Tuesday ever. I love you all, especially you. Hey you. Have a great day.

Quick Hit: The 2017 WPIX Channel 11 TV Schedule

The New York Yankees will return to WPIX Channel 11 once again this season when they aren’t on the YES Network for another 21 games in 2017. Here is the 21 game schedule for the Yankees on WPIX as they return to the channel for the third season. It’s worth mentioning that PIX11 will also produce pre-game specials for each primetime Yankees game this season which should be fun.

The YES Network’s Michael Kay, David Cone, John Flaherty, Al Leiter, Meredith Marakovits, Paul O’Neill, Ken Singleton and Ryan Ruocco will cover the games for PIX11 this season.

So it Seems We Have a New Look

My apologies as this was long overdue but the website took a turn in a different direction as far as the looks of it goes. I have finally, and again I apologize, taken the time to update the site’s pictures on the side bars. Gone are the players that have walked via free agency, retired or been traded away and in are some of the new players and prospects that should be around for a long, long time.

The schedule for the 2017 season is updated as is the payroll and roster pages (thanks Bryan!). The Wives and Girlfriends section still needs to be updated while the TGP T-Shirts and Yankees Tickets links are still up and running properly. Also we are preparing for our 9th season (wow… nine seasons of this) of the Mega Prediction Game which has also been updated on the site.

So check out the new additions, and some of the old functions that have been updated and at least consider joining us on the Mega Prediction Game. It’s fun, although it’s a season-long commitment, and we seems to have a lot of fun with it. I know that I do anyway. I’m a three time champion, Bryan Knepper is a three-time champion and Ken Reed is a two-time champion. Who wins season nine? Stay tuned.

Oh, because Kode, you are still my favorite thing.

Highlights from the 2017 Yankees Schedule

The New York Yankees announced their tentative 2017 schedule this week and it’s time to start making plans. See the Yankees are going for it, presumably anyway, in 2017 and will have a young and exciting roster to check out so here are a few highlights for the 2017 regular season that I feel like you must see if you’re a Yankees fan. Don’t look too far ahead though, we still have a lot of work to do here yet in 2016. Enjoy.

The Yankees will end Spring Training 2017 with an exhibition game with the Atlanta Braves in their newly built SunTrust Park. I’m not sure, and won’t be until around January or February, whether the Yankees will play any other exhibition games with either MLB teams or college teams towards the end of spring training though so you will have to stay tuned for that. The game on March 31, 2017 is confirmed to be happening though down in Atlanta.

Opening Day for the Yankees is on Sunday, April 2nd down in Tampa, Florida as New York takes on the Tampa Bay Rays. You have to think that’s a Masahiro Tanaka vs. Chris Archer kind of afternoon inside Tropicana Field. The Yankees will play three games in Tampa and three games in Baltimore against the Orioles before welcoming the Tampa bay Rays to the Bronx for their home opener on Monday, April 10.

The Yankees and Mets play their split Subway Series again in 2017 with two games coming in Queens and two games coming in the Bronx on August 14 – August 17th while New York also faces off with the National League Central in Interleague Play. That includes series with the St. Louis Cardinals, the Milwaukee Brewers and the Cincinnati Reds at home while the team makes the trip to PNC Park to face the Pittsburgh Pirates, Wrigley Field to face the Chicago Cubs and the Great American Ballpark to hit home runs against the Cincinnati Reds.

2017 should be another fun season full of great series matchups, historic teams facing off head-to-head and I’m sure there will be a firework or two to be shot off. I’m not looking ahead whatsoever but I still can’t wait for next season. I mean, come on. The Yankees inside Wrigley Field? The St. Louis Cardinals inside Yankee Stadium? The Yankees down in Atlanta, even for an exhibition game, when I’m a Yankees fan displaced in Atlanta? What’s not to love?

Game Preview: New York Yankees @ Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim 8/21

The New York Yankees and the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim will finish off their three game set this afternoon with a game that us on the East Coast can actually watch without staying up  half the damn night. I have a serious beef with West Coast games and MLB schedule makers, I just wanted to make sure that came through in some of my blog posts here. There's no reason a Saturday game cannot be played in the afternoon like today's afternoon game but I digress. In the finale of the series the Yankees will send Chad Green to the mound looking for a repeat of his last start while the Angels will counter with Jhoulys Chacin.

Green was absolutely stellar in his last start against the Toronto Blue Jays as he led the Yankees with six shut-out innings against a tough offense. Green had a perfect game heading into the fifth inning and struck out 11 in the Yankees only victory of the series.

Chacin has only been back in the Yankees rotation for two starts now and with any player who was removed from the rotation the expected lack of stamina has hit Chacin hard. Chacin has only been able to give the Angels six innings combined in two starts and last faced the Yankees in June, a start that resulted in five runs allowed, seven hits and a loss for Los Angeles.

The game will be played at 3:35 pm ET inside Angels Stadium of Anaheim and can be seen on the YES Network and MLB TV. Let's crush these geographically confused group of 25 MLB ball players and let's get traveling to the rainiest place in the continental United States, shall we? Go Yankees!

Game Preview: New York Yankees vs. Boston Red Sox 7/16

The New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox are back at it again this afternoon in the Bronx with the second in a three-game weekend set between the two AL East rivals. In the second matchup the Yankees will send CC Sabathia to the mound hoping for a return to his early season form while the Red Sox will counter with Eduardo Rodriguez. Rivalry renewed ladies and gentleman!

Sabathia’s last three starts left something to be desired for both the big lefty and the Yankees but overall CC had been one of the Yankees best starters in the first half. CC will look to improve on his mediocre career record against the Boston Red Sox this afternoon though after posting just a 12-12 record with a 4.47 ERA in 32 career starts.

Rodriguez will be called up from Triple-A before tonight’s contest to be inserted back into the rotation for the second half. The left-hander has done well against the Yankees in four career starts posting a 3-1 record with a 2.22 ERA which may explain some of the thought process behind calling him up now rather than later.

The game will be played at 4:05 pm ET inside Yankee Stadium and can be seen on the YES Network, Fox Sports One and MLB TV. The Yankees second half schedule as we touched on yesterday is brutal and it’s only going to get worse after Boston leaves town tomorrow night. The good news for New York is that many of these games are on the road and/or on the east coast but the bad news is this team, at least on paper, could be gearing up for an absolutely rough month of July. Stay tuned to see if what this team looks like on paper matches what they actually look like on the field. Regardless I’m still rooting for my boys in pinstripes like I always do. Go Yankees.

Game Preview: New York Yankees vs. Boston Red Sox 7/15

We’re back and it feels so good. Baseball returns to your living rooms and the Bronx tonight as the New York Yankees begin a brutal second half schedule with the Boston Red Sox. The Red Sox are in a dog fight with the Baltimore Orioles at the top of the American League East while the Yankees are still treading water around the .500 mark while searching for an identity this season. In the contest tonight the Yankees will send Michael Pineda to the mound to square off with the Red Sox starter Steven Wright.

Pineda bounced back in a big way during the month of June and will look to keep the good times rolling here in July. His first start of July against the Chicago White Sox did not go according to plan after allowing five runs on five hits in six innings of work but the Yankees right-hander will look to turn things

Wright will make the first start of the second half for the Red Sox after having an All-Star worth first half for Boston. Wright allowed two earned runs or fewer in 11 of his 17 first half starts including one gem inside Yankee Stadium on May 8. Wright pitched a complete game and frustrated the Yankees offense all night long in a victory for Boston in the matchup.

The game will be played at 7:05 pm ET inside Yankee Stadium and can be seen on the WPIX Channel 11, MLB Network and MLB TV. As we looked at earlier and said previously in this post this is the beginning of an absolutely horrendous schedule for the Yankees that will bring a lot of tough teams to the Bronx. This month will undoubtedly set the tone for the remainder of the season and maybe for a couple seasons to come as well. No pressure New York but everyone is watching to see if you fold or you continue to fight like the team did before the All-Star break in Cleveland. Go Yankees.
