Yankees May Make Run At Stephen Drew

According to Jon Heyman and his Twitter account the Yankees may be ready to make a run at Stephen Drew now that the $189 million luxury tax threshold is out the window. I have been calling for Stephen Drew as our third basemen this season and shortstop next season so I am excited to hear this news. Drew has expressed a willingness to play other positions other than shortstop, where he has spent his entire career, so this may be a match made in heaven for the Yankees.

The Yankees would have to surrender a draft pick if they were to sign Drew and the Boston Red Sox would gain a draft pick but at this point it's only the 53rd overall we would be surrendering. Drew would probably be more valuable to us now and long term than the 53rd overall pick so the deal is one that I am watching closely. Stay tuned.

  1. I'd love to see this happen. But that I'm a big Drew fan, but he would be worth a couple more wins than Johnson and Nunez. And a couple more wins could make the difference between winning the division and getting a wild card.

  2. Know your enemy.........This is from today's Boston Globe :
    ***
This is Jonny Gomes, Red Sox, on the NY Yankees today.
Imagine if he realized, there is no REAL closer ? Just a bunch of ...IF's

"They run a pretty tight camp. It's kind of interesting, though -- $500 million and still, some questions. You've got (catcher Brian) McCann who hasn't been in the American League before. The pitcher (Tanaka) who hasn't pitched a game over here. They've got some guys playing different positions. They've got some true professionls over there. They've got some guys coming back. CC (Sabathia) has lost some weight. He's going to get back to his ace caliber. But it's about winning the summer. It's not about winning the winter. That's what we're going to try to do again."

    1. I'm failing to understand why a .260 hitter with 13 home runs is an upgrade over a .250 hitter with 16 home runs. He may be better defensively, but is he $10million+ better? Johnson has played 3b more than Drew has.

    2. Confused by the Brian McCann reference there Mr. Gomes. Catching a AL pitcher is different then catching an NL pitcher because? Hitting home runs in a smaller ball park is a question over hitting home runs in Atlanta because?

    3. Jeff in the end you are right but you have to think past this season but let's look at 2013 for a second first.

Brian Roberts is going to get injured this season, hate to say it but its only a matter of time, that's when Kelly Johnson gets moved over to second. Also KJ is a platoon batter, you don't necessarily have to platoon Drew so those numbers are a little skewed by sample size.

Also you have to remember that this deal is for next season as well. We are presumably going to need a capable shortstop next season with some semblance of a bat... enter Drew

    4. I doubt Roberts makes it out of Spring Training. Enter Dean Anna. Very intrigued about him for some reason. As for Drew, I'm just not a fan of his at all. Maybe it's his agent, maybe it's because I couldn't stand his brother, I don't know.

    5. Jeff...
Very nice! I was wondering when someone was going to revisit the Dean case for 2nd.

I too, am very intrigued with Dean...I hope he gets a fair shoot to make the team. I want to see him in a pressure situation...trying to make the team!
Someone at Yankee Land thinks he has something...let's see!

    6. I am also really huge on Dean Anna. I understand there is a reason he was a 26 year old career minor leaguer out of options with no position to play on a team like San Diego.. but still, I like him. He has the fire and really want it, wants it probably more than most.

  3. Ken Reed, I always value your opinion, however your last comment holds not weight with me as far as someone at Yankee land thinks he has something because lets be honest here, the Yankees are not the greatest talent evaluators are they?

    2. Ken H, you are a good man and Yankee fan!
As Daniel just wrote...no they are not!
Just one thing, I have looked at his numbers, and a few reports on Dean...he has some talent...the question is, will it translate to the big show? Thus, let's see what he has in ST!
As a fan, I want to know what he can do...or not! No saviour just let him make or break it!

Thanks for your comment Ken H, have a good day!

    3. Ken Reed I hope for both of our sakes he is a steal, I just don't trust anything Cashman does with trades. Anyone that traded for Vazques twice and wanted to bring back Pavano after his 4 year melt down in NY along with trading for Jeff Weaver isn't the sharpest knife in the draw as far as talent evaluation goes

    4. I'm sure every GM has their follies, maybe not as many as Cashman, but still. He has found quite a few lightning in a bottle guys recently.

    5. Daniel you know what they say about blind squirrels...even they find an acorn every once and a while

      Delete
    6. I am not as down on Cashman as you are. I have never made excuses for him but I find it hard to believe that "blind luck" has kept him around through the 2000's with only two World Series to show for it.

    7. Ken Hans...
I take it you are not Irish! LOL
Any how, A few of the almost and some of the trades attributed to Cashman were not of his doing.
He has a boss...in fact three of them...as with the late King George, what they want Cashman delivers...or in some cases, talks them out of!
Not in any means trying to exonerate him whatsoever...just fact!
He has had some good and bad picks, but, as Yankee fans we see all his mistakes. Other GMs also make the same bad choices once in a while but, we don't hear of them.
I think he will quit after this year anyhow. He has had offerers from many teams over the years, I think this is the time he goes else where!

      side Note again...
If anyone here thinks a real good GM is going to step up and take his place...not much of a chance.
The only guy out there I would vote for is...Showalter. He is a great talent man, don't forget he worked with "Stick" setting up the Core four, then the Old Man came back and fired him etc.

  4. WHEN THE...Yankees signed Bryan Roberts, to play 2nd...they obtained a terrific ballplayer.

"Oh, but he is injured all the time !...Dean Anna will save us ! "...baloney !

Yes, the concussions, ate up most of the missed time. The knee, sliding into 2nd, was the other
game eater. But, he is healthy now. Almost 300 AB' last season.
This is a hard nosed gamer. And he is proven. A great signing.

    1. Patrick I actually agree with you on Roberts. He is the wildcard here and if and that truly is a big word here, if he stays healthy the boy can play. My concern is third base and lets face it guys we don't have any chips down on the farm to pry anyone who is decent away from a team. Again and again this is the ineptness of the Cashman, Oppenheimer and the rest of the clowns that have drafted. I always use the Rays as an example on drafting and I always say the Rays have only one pitcher in their starting rotation that the Yankees couldn't draft and that is Price. Every other starter they have we could've drafted. Then the comeback is that the Rays draft higher in the rounds than the Yanks, well how come the Roid Sux have a better farm system than the Yanks. They draft at the bottom of the rounds like we do. Answer is quite easy which is we have Bozo's running the show and I will defend Hal on this and I think you all I know I dislike him, but he doesn't want to have to keep shelling out millions of dollars for FA, he wants his home grown talent so he can keep the payroll manageable and I would tell him that when Cashman's contract runs out don't rehire the schmuck. Anyone can negotiate a $155 million dollar FA contract, not everyone can make decent trades or draft the right players.

    2. on top of that we let David Adams go who is right handed and can play 1b and 3b after basically half a season

  5. TALKING WITH BIG LOU..........................or
Stephen Drew ?....at that asking price, I don't think so.

I had a conversation tonight, with Big Lou...owner of Seaford Beverage. My beer guy.
After knowing Lou for 30 years, I can share things with him, that I do not, with my wonderful wife.

Lou is a die hard Met fan. Too nice a guy to be suffering all this time. But, we all make choices.
Mine was easy.. From diapers...I was a Yankee fan. Maybe, from not being breast feed ?
    That's my guess.

That said....Lou says to me.. " the NY Post says the Yankees, and the Mets, are all over Drew.
I said.." Show me where it says that ?". He starts to fumble through today's NY Post.
" Right here", says Big Lou......" Drew, is asking for 3 years, $39 million !"

I respond, "$39 million...Jesus ! Not this year, not this Yankee team"..I'm shaking my head, no way.
Lou drops the hammer..." but, he hit .256 last year, with 13 home runs." Lou, is salivating now.

Being kind, and a good customer, I say...." Lou, I hope your team is lucky enough to grab him."
Lou smiles. He thinks the Mets will now steal Drew away from the Yankees. Lou is a good guy.
But, he hates the Yankees. But pretends not to.
Always, by mid season, he turns the Mets TV games off. It's like clock work. End of June.....no TV.

I drive away, smiling. Life is funny. Lou, is probably telling the next guy..." the Mets are gonna get this Stephen Drew guy, a Yankee fan told me that, tonight."
Lou....for $39 million, he is all yours.

    2. Well Ken H...
What did you expect from an Irishman?

This is all going to be a non-issue by the time Spring training has come and gone!
I don't like giving up a draft pick for Drew + $$$$$. If (there's that word again) we can't up grade at 3rd with a trade...go with what we have...Nunez.

    3. Rocket Ken & Ken Hans......those kind words, from you fine men, brought a

  6. "IF" is the only word I know of to describe this team.

The Yankees still have our real 3rd baseman under contract for 3/4 years.
Going for Handly R next year makes little sense. Drew for SS next year make little sense.

Why have most fans forgotten Nunez?

Nunez played 3rd much, much better than he has at SS/2nd, he has a better bat and much greater speed than anyone else we have or could get. I don't understand passing up on a guy that will play 3rd as well as most of those we have now can be overlooked...his offensive numbers alone will carry him. My goodness, we let Jeters offensive numbers carry him for the last 5/6 years and hope he will do enough to do so again this year.

Used right, a line-up with Brett, Itcy, Ells and Nunez could cause havoc with a team...what a weapon to have!

I have faith in giving Nunez the spot...to win or lose...this spring training!

IF Robert can stay healthy all year, 2nd is ok!
IF Jeter can hit enough to carry his limited range, we will be ok at SS!
IF Tex can come back and play to the back of his card, 1st will be ok!
IF D-Rob can really do the job as closer and others come through to make it a 6/7 game...OK!
IF The big question marks in the starting rotation come through as hoped...OK!

The outfield is more or less set.

    3. If Roberts stays healthy all season long we got a hell of a steal and a hell of an upgrade at second base over what we had on the day Cano walked... I am just finding it hard to be optimistic about that.
