This Day in New York Yankees History 6/4: Big Unit Wins 300

On this day in 2009 the San Francisco Giants Randy Johnson would pitch six innings in a 5-1 Giants victory over the Washington Nationals for Johnson's 300th victory of his career. The former Seattle Mariner, Houston Astro, Arizona Diamondback, and New York Yankee would become the 24th pitcher in the history of the game to win #300 and the first to win his 300th game in his first try since Tom Seaver beat the Yankees in 1985.

Also on this day in 1980 at Shea Stadium the recently traded Jim Kaat, who was fresh over from the New York Yankees, gets a complete game shutout against the St. Louis Cardinals in 10 innings. The Mets would beat the Cardinals 1-0 in 10 innings. The 41 year old pitcher did not start a game for the Yankees last season but gets the win thanks to a 10th inning solo home run from Ken Reitz. Ain't that some luck?

  1. On this day in 2016 Muhammad Ali, the second greatest heavyweight fighter in the last 75 years died.
A great loss for the fight fans in the sporting world and anyone else that can remember how he turned to helping those with his affliction and many other worth wile endeavors.

  2. This is not to detract from Ali and his fighting ability...just keeping the record straight as we all know when as a great man as he was, goes to the party in the sky, he is made out to be much more than he really was.
His record speaks for itself; Total Pro Fights-61, Wins-56, Win by KO-37, Losses-5! Not bad for a guy that was not a puncher, so they said, right?

But then we come to a guy the had his life cut short because of a plane crash! He didn't get very much ink at his passing, and not a lot of respect for his record and the little actual training he had as a boxer.
May I introduce you all to the Only Undefeated Heavyweight Champion in the history of boxing...Rocky Marciano, 49 pro fights, 49-Wins, 43 by KO,
Losses-0. 1st 16 fights by KO, 9 of which were in the 1st round.
Ezzard Charles was the only guy to go 15 rounds with him (lost), came back the next year and was KO'd in the 8th round.
He had no style, was clumsy, the experts kept saying how he wouldn't last against some of the better fighters...wrong, therefore, the rated him anywhere from 5th to the 12 best heavyweight fighter of all time. BS on that, he came to my high school and asked someone that was strong to let him hit him in the chest by only stretching his arm from the L position. We had a monster Tackle about 6" 3'' almost 300#. Rocky had on one of those kid gloves with big padding (and I mean Big padding), he striated his arm and knock the kid about five feet away from himself flat on his back and the kid could hardly breathe from loss of wind.
His KO Blow had more explosive energy than an armour-piercing bullet and as much energy as it would require spotting lift 1000# pounds one foot off the ground.
This is one of the reasons only two fighters fought him twice and the others retired after they fought him, his style dictated he go after the body than one blow to the chin would end it.
But the body and arms were beaten up so bad the were useless to a fighter after they fought him....so the story goes, anyhow!
Thanks to Wikipedia for much of the information.
