The Mets Offense vs. the Giants Pitching

Now I’m not nor have I ever been a Major League Baseball hitter so I can only presume but you have to think that the offense for both the New York Mets and the San Francisco Giants can’t be looking forward to tonight. I mean yeah, it’s the postseason and I’m sure everyone is pumped for the playoffs and this do-or-die one-game playoff game tonight but when you look at tonight’s pitching matchup you have to cringe a little bit as a hitter. Especially the New York Mets offense who has to take at-bats against the Giants starter tonight Madison Bumgarner.

Here is what the New York Mets offense has done against Bumgarner in their careers. All photos and stats are courtesy of ESPN.com:

  1. this season, rob refsnyder didn't get consistent playing time, and he didn't hit as well as hoped, with little to no power. the numbers put up by refsnyder this season is the same as the mets staff career numbers against Madison.

and this is before we mention that the dude turns into an animal in October.

    1. Daryl you need consistent amount of at bases to put up numbers. He got screwed by the Binder and the Elf

    2. I know, ken. Girardi just does not like him, that's my only explanation. I don't think Castro's defense is much better than refs, and Castro at the plate is pretty painful. throw 3 breaking balls outside and he's done.

this wasn't bashing refs, just using his numbers for the season to see Madison bumgarner vs mets staff.

    3. I don't think anybody really knows why Refsnyder isn't getting playing time. When he was playing regularly, his average was in the .280-.300 range. Power was never his game, so I don't hold that against him. When they sent him down, he hit like .350. Meanwhile, we had to watch Hicks with his .215 batting average play rightfield, and a 28 year old minor leaguer (Solano) play second base. Both positions that Refsnyder can play.

    4. If I knew why the Yankees refuse to play Robert Refsnyder I'd probably be a millionaire. I prefer to focus on things I can solve, you know simpler things like the purpose of life and stuff like that.

    5. Daryl I agree with you on Castro. He is three sliders in the dirt away from walking back to the dugout. I think Refsnyder will be packaged during the winter and where he ends he will be in the range that Levin stated above average wise. Its a shame the elf and the binder just don't give this kid a chance. I'm talking 300 at bats

    6. I know it sounds odd for a Yankee fan to hope that talent gets traded away from the Yankees, but I am in Refsnyder's case. He is way too talented of a player to be sitting the bench.

    7. I'm the same way Jeff. I'd rather see the kid get a shot at playing every day than sitting here on the bench or in Triple-A. Even though it gives me plenty to write about on a daily basis :)

  2. Refsnyder and the Yankees need a Manager that is not an ex-player or one that understands talent when he sees it and knows how to get the best out of him.
Many older players (now managers) have a block against rooks over a vet.

    1. Totally agree. The only way Girardi is going to use young guys is if Cashman doesn't give him any vets. We saw it at the end of this season. Tyler Austin does well, sits on the bench.

Hits a walk off home run, benched the next day. Ref rides the bench. Even Ronald Torreyes rides the bench. Aaron Hicks played every day though.

    2. That's simple Burch. Hicks was a trade all the other guys were either drafted or signed FA so Hicks needed to play everyday to make the elf look good and the trade look like it worked in his behalf.

    3. I could be wrong, and in all honesty I probably am wrong, but I can't see Brian Cashman making the call to tell Girardi to play Hicks everyday. If it was someone like a high-profiled Alex Rodriguez, sure, but Aaron Hicks?

A fourth outfielder that was traded for with a back up catcher that ended up Triple-A on a last place team because he couldn't hit and handle the staff? This one sounds like it's all on Girardi. Again though, could be wrong.

  3. As for Castro, he makes many mental errors and is a showman, two things I don't like in a player. We have two or more guys on the farm that could do a much better job than he. And I think I have said that many many times!

    1. Castro is a stop gap for Mateo, Gleyber torres or whoever. Always thought that. What Hans and others say is correct. throw three balls breaking off the plate and he'll flail at them every single time.

    2. By the way I read an article from ABC news about the ELF and how he and the Binder will play out their contracts next year. My feeling is quite simple. If they fail to make the playoffs again which would be 4 times in 5 years that both need to be let go. The Clipper is infatuated with the elf, the elf probably has pictures of the clipper with farm animals so he keeps him around. Better GM's and managers have been fired for less results. Second I cut and paste this info below which is quite interesting and has proven my point for the last few years.

Yankees average home attendance dropped from 41,995 in Derek Jeter's final season in 2014 to 39,430 last year and 37,820 this season.

Average viewers on the YES Network fell from 288,000 in 2014 to 259,000 the following year to 218,000 this season — Mets' games on SNY averaged 263,850 this year, up from 242,667 in 2015.

There is no way the Ruppert Murdoch is happy abut the YES network and if he doesn't force Hal to spend money on guys like Chapman then I don't know what to tell you. Viewership and attendance is way down and I love the youth movement, however you need some veteran pieces to supplement the youth. Betances is NOT a closer, Bring back the Cuban missile. Lastly I also seem to be the only guy on here that thinks Rothschild is nothing special. Many of you guys praise this guy and I don't see it. Why hasn't it worked with Pineda, or Severino or Betances on holding runners on or being able to throw to a base. There are many more pitchers as well that aren't that good, yet he is like the teflon don. His contract his up and the elf wants to bring him back so I expect to see him but to me thats BS. Aren't people supposed to be judged on your merit and what you achieve. I've seen nothing from him

      Delete
    3. Hell, Daniel, I told everyone that after seeing him at bat 20 times, which is more than one needs to show "They ain't got it"! Also, he isn't as dependable as Many other 2nd base players we have (Refsy)!

    4. Ken H...
The team never had 3,000,000 or over hit the turn styles until 1999.
What did the fans expect after the last of the core 4+1 retired, more fans?
Don't worry about it Ken H, with the kids winning games next year and the fans picking another Jeter...things will improve as the fans find a player to get behind again.Cashman never signs until his contract is up before he signs a new 3 year deal.

      Delete
    5. Reed I NEVER expect you to agree with me and I don't want Cashman or Girardi back. Its time to make a complete break from this group. As I said before better GM's and managers have been fired for less.

      Delete
    6. ken H, you are right on Joe G, he needs to go. Cashman may need to go also (I don't agree with that) who built the farm system so that we only need a player here or there?
So, we do agree on one of two, what do you expect? lol
      Have fun today Ken!

    7. I'm with you guys on Girardi. Torre was slapped in the face and forced out the door for less than what Girardi has gotten away with. As far as Cashman, I tend to agree with Hans. That being said, I'm willing to give him the opportunity to finish his contract out. If the Yankees aren't drastically better next year with the young players he's drafted, signed, or acquired, I say enough is enough.

    8. I'm with you Levin. As far as your comment Reed the farm system has not been developed they way it should have been. Again no stud pitchers from this guys draft classes, yet the top flight organization like the Cards and the Giants draft low in the rounds but they are able to develop arms.

Reed I can assure you if you were a GM and didn't make the playoffs 4 out of 5 years you wouldn't be employed. I think the elf did a good job with the trades of talent, but again I said he didn't pluck any top notch arms that are nigher than A ball. The return needed a topflight arm ready to move into the rotation. Pineda and CC and crew just don't put the fear into hitters. Tanaka pitched well this year but again I think he is a 1A. If you watched the Mets game last night you saw two aces on the mound. I don't put Tanaka in that category. Its time to clean house especially if they don't make the playoffs next year and the way they are currently built its not happening and one last thing. You keep mentioning Machado, this clown owner isn't spending money until more and more people stop watching the games and stop going to games.

NY fans are use to being at the top and George wouldn't allow this to happen. You need to spend money to make money. Isn't that apparent with the stats I gave you

      Delete
    9. Wrong ken H, IF I were General Manager we would be in the playoffs because I would have changed manager at the end of last year. Besides that, the players would play and play well or be moved for someone else that gets the job done...no excuses are accepted! Rookies play IF they get the job done as well as the older player. All players would report to spring training IN SHAPE or be fined, all players would stay in shape all year. Fewer injuries If everyone is in shape.
No favorites and No overworking pitchers or catchers.

    10. Ken H your comment of;

"NY fans are used to being at the top and George wouldn't allow this to happen. You need to spend money to make money. Isn't that apparent with the stats I gave you"!

That is Business 101, and true except when one has to deal with a penny pincher like Hal.
Injuries have sidetracked some of the pitchers that were drafted the last few years many of whom were highly rated. But No big named stud, just for a second think about this...there are many big guns that have a big losing record against the Yankees so, an Ace is only as good as his offense!

      Delete
    11. Really because I saw Madison B last night and he is an ace no matter what the team does offensively, because the guy pitches deep into games. Name a Yankee pitcher that pitches deep into games consistently? You can't even give me an answer because we all know one doesn't exist

      Delete
    12. It is nice to have an "Ace" or two on your team that will give one 7+ innings every time out, but one plays with what one has...it is called "adapt and improvise"! There are many pitchers that go 7+ innings and lose the game...they are "Ace's"?

      Delete
    13. By the way, and this will be up later on the blog, the Yankees had 0 complete games this season for the first time ever in their 113 year existence... so no, they don't pitch deep into games at all. Let alone consistently.

      Delete
    14. See thats my point. Reed you would take Bumgarner on your team even if we scored 2 run a game he keeps you in the game. No Yankee pitcher does that. Tanaka is the closest and to me he is not an ace

      Delete
    15. Ken H, I get it and always have but there are things standing in the way.
I would take Bumgarner and others just like him...in a heartbeat!
Question; how are we ever going to get that type of pitcher(s) with Hal at the controls?
Answer; Get under the damn CAP! How we do it, I don't care but trading away our top farm hands is the wrong way. Oh, we can give up one or so but guys like Frazier, Gleyber Torres, Blake Rutherford, Sheffield, Wilk. Garcia is a non starter with me...to damn much needed talent in that bunch!

  4. Also, to touch on what Hans is saying about George, I have another short little post scheduled for this weekend using a quote from the Boss that will "define" the 2017 season and beyond. Look out for that.

    ReplyDelete
  5. Guys, King George is dead, he loved the Yankees but made many bad bad moves. He destroyed our farm system, and thought he could buy the WS every year. That type of thinking is long gone.

    ReplyDelete
  6. IF Hal follows thru with doing what some of us think is the right way, we could have a very competitive team as early as next year!
The one thing that kills dynasties is everyone getting old at the same time...it happened in the '60's, '70's and the 2000's.
Having Didi at short and a 22 year old at 2nd is good thinking. The same goes with the rest of the team, a 22 year old CF lets one have older wing players. As I have never bought into the age thing as to letting me know when a player is ready for the show. God given talent and hard work will (should) get one the job, but harder work will let one stay in the Show.
