Can't Predict Baseball: A Four Hour Plus Baseball Game

In honor of the Yankees playing in Milwaukee for the final time this season we bring you a bit of "This Day In Milwaukee Brewers History" that just so happens to overlap with some New York Yankees history.

On this day in 2000 The Milwaukee Brewers beat the Chicago Cubs 14-8 in a nine inning game that took four hours and twenty two minutes. The time of the game breaks a National League record and ties the Major League record set by the Baltimore Orioles and the Yankees on September 5, 1997 for the longests non-extra inning game ever played.

The Yankees will send David Phelps to the mound for his second start of the season to face off with Matt Garza for the Brewers. The game will be played at 2:10 pm ET on the YES Network, MLB TV, and it can be heard on the radio with WFAN.

Get Ready, The Pink Bats Are Coming...

Get ready Yankees fans, the pink bats are coming. Every Mothers Day everyone around Major League Baseball uses pink bats and usually supplements an arm band or some piece of equipment with a pink addition. Personally I hate pink and I do not think men should wear pink, "real men" or not, but I guess today I can make an exception. Happy Mothers Day everybody and Go Pink Yankees!

Preview: New York Yankees vs. Milwaukee Brewers 5/11

The New York Yankees and the Milwaukee Brewers will play a Mothers Day game this afternoon in the finale at Miller Park. The Yankees will send David Phelps to the mound to face off with the Brewers Matt Garza. The game will be played at 2:10 pm ET and can be seen on the YES Network, MLB TV, and can be heard on the radio with WFAN.

Phelps has been in the rotation for what feels like a month but is only making his second start since replacing Michael Pineda in the rotation. Phelps pitched 5.1 IP of one run and three hit ball against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in his only other start taking a no decision in the 4-1 Yankee loss. Phelps is said to be able to go 90-95 pitches this afternoon for the Yankees.

Garza is making his second start of the month after he held the Arizona Diamondbacks to just eight hits and three runs in a victory. Garza has won his last two starts at home so hopefully the Yankees can snap that streak this afternoon in Milwaukee.

Ryan "feeling awful" over Saturday night's error

Whether or not Brendan Ryan's error in last night's loss to the Brewers actually affected the game's outcome is up for debate.

The bobble, which took place with two outs and nobody on in the bottom of third, aloud Milwaukee SS Jean Segura to reach first, setting up a two-run home run from Jonathan Lucroy and a solo home run from Aramis Ramirez.

At that point, the Crew led 4-2, with all three of those trips around the bases charged to CC Sabathia as unearned. 

It looks like Ryan agrees with that ruling. 

"It just rips your heart out," #17 told ESPN New York's Wallace Matthews. "CC was starting to cruise there for a minute, and then the next thing you know, it costs you three [runs]. It feels pretty awful. Big difference in the game. We rallied, but take those three runs away, we probably didn’t need to." 

That part about Sabathia cruising is actually true, as the big man had retired six in a row, but overall, those two home runs are still on him. The error wasn't a dropped fly ball with runners in scoring position, it was a missed grounder with two outs and nobody on. They're completely different.

Trenton Thunder Game Recap 5/10

Game Suspended in the 13th, to be Completed Sunday

The Thunder and Reading Fightin Phils were suspended by rain in the bottom of the 13th inning with the score tied 3-3 before a sell-out crowd at ARM & HAMMER Park last night.

The Thunder's Peter O'Brien broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the fourth inning with a two-run homer. Reading tied the game in the fifth inning, scoring a pair of runs on three hits against Thunder starter Caleb Cotham.

The Thunder regained the lead in the sixth without the benefit of a hit. Gary Sanchez reached on a throwing error by Reading shortstop Edgar Duran. Reading starter Mike Nesseth then issued walks to Tyler Austin and Taylor Dugas to load the bases with two out. Colton Murray came on in relief of Nesseth and surrendered a bases loaded walk to Ali Castillo that put the Thunder back ahead, 3-2.

Reading solved Thunder reliever Tyler Webb for a run in the seventh on a walk and a pair of singles.
The game remained tied at three as each bullpen held the opposition scoreless until rain suspended the game prior the bottom of the 13th.

It will resume at 1:05 PM tomorrow, with the regularly scheduled 9 inning game to follow. Fans wishing to see the completion of Saturday's game may bring their tickets back to the box office beginning tomorrow at 9:30am to exchange their tickets.

LHP Matt Tracy (3-2, 5.59) will start for the Thunder. Reading will send RHP Serverino Gonzalez (3-2, 4.02) to the mound.

Charleston Riverdogs Game Recap 5/10

Sand Gnats Snap Smith's Scoreless Streak

Caleb Smith reached 23.1 consecutive scoreless innings until sixth-inning sacrifice fly

CHARLESTON, SC - Charleston RiverDogs southpaw Caleb Smith extended his scoreless innings streak to 23.1 innings pitched, but the Savannah Sand Gnats ended the streak and picked up a 1-0 win on Saturday evening in front of 5,056 fans at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park in South Atlantic League action.

The RiverDogs are now 18-16 this season while the Sand Gnats climb to 24-9. Smith's streak of 23.1 consecutive scoreless innings is the sixth-best streak in Charleston's ten seasons as a New York Yankees affiliate.

Over the first five innings, Smith and Savannah's John Gant were engaged in a scoreless pitchers' duel. Charleston loaded the bases with two outs in the first inning but did not score. Savannah had runners on the corners in the fourth before a pair of fly outs closed the scoring threat. Smith also picked off three runners in the five shutout innings that opened his outing.

The Sand Gnats took a 1-0 lead in the sixth to stop Smith's streak. Smith was ushered out of the contest after three straight walks. Giovanny Gallegos pitched with the bases loaded against Stefan Sabol, who hit a sacrifice fly to score Gavin Cecchini.

Cecchini's run ended the scoreless stretch for Smith, who walked Cecchini to open the inning and was charged with the run. Smith's five scoreless innings to begin Saturday's game are added to his four recent shutout starts to reach his final total of 23.1 innings pitched in the streak. The streak began after Smith gave up three runs to the Augusta GreenJackets at home on April 13.

Gant pitched a scoreless sixth inning before the Sand Gnats bullpen finished Savannah's shutout win. Dawrin Frias stranded a pair of runners in scoring position in the seventh and nearly allowed a go-ahead home run in the eighth, but Kale Sumner's fly ball to left field was caught in front of the wall. Pinch-hitter John Murphy produced a two-out single that extended the ninth inning before Robert Coles locked down the save with a game-ending strikeout.

Gant earned the victory, improving to 4-1 this season. Smith is 3-2 after being charged with the loss. Coles now has seven saves in as many chances.

BALLPARK FUN: The first 1,000 fans through the gates received a Tony the Peanut Man singing bobblehead, sponsored by WCSC Channel 5. Scores of citizens from Goose Creek enjoyed an evening at The Joe on Goose Creek Night. Following the close-knit contest, all the children in attendance had the opportunity to run around the bases, which is a staple of all Saturday home games for the RiverDogs.

COMING UP: Game two of this four-game series is scheduled for 5:05pm on Sunday with RiverDogs RHP Brady Lail (4-1, 3.98 ERA) pitching against Sand Gnats RHP Chris Flexen (1-3, 7.50 ERA). This Day In New York Yankees History 5/11

On this day in 1946 the New York Yankees and Tiny Bonham end the Boston Red Sox 15 game winning streak with a 2-0 victory in Yankee Stadium. Before the loss Boston was 21-3 to start the 1946 season and would easily win the American League pennant that season.

On this day in 2006 Hideki Matsui's streak of playing in every game since starting his MLB career with the Yankees ends at 518 games. Matsui broke his wrist attempting to make a diving catch out in left field. The 31 year old All Star from Japan established the major league record for the most consecutive games played to start a career surpassing Ernie Banks' mark of 424 games.
