You
guys read my stuff and you know I tend to pour my heart into subjects that I
truly feel passionate about. With that said I think you all were waiting and
knowing that this rant about the Boston Red Sox signing Yoan Moncada was
coming, right?
Moncada
ended up signing with Boston for $31.5 million which equates to $63 million
after penalties for going over the International Free Agents cap. When you
consider that any team that blows past the cap like the New York Yankees and
now the Red Sox have they cannot sign an IFA for more than $300K for each of
the next two seasons. New York always spends in the International market and
cannot for the next two seasons so signing Moncada for $63 million this season
would really only equate to $21 million annually spread across three years,
also known as chump change for New York.
I’ve
always been under the impression that you bring in the best possible players
and then you find a spot in the field and in the lineup for them. It doesn’t
matter, to me, if Robert Refsnyder looks like the next Babe Ruth in Triple-A,
it’s Triple-A for a reason. If they both work out, great, and if they don’t
then at least you have a backup plan. It’s also worth mentioning that Moncada
is 19 years old. If he’s “blocked” at second base see if he can play shortstop,
or first base, or third base, or the outfield, or catcher or something. He’s
young, agile, versatile, and teachable while still a year or more away from the
big leagues anyway.
My
plan, and I urge you all to follow me in this plan, is to hit the Yankees in
the pocket. I’m not going to see any Yankees games this year. I’m not buying
the YES Network this year. I’m not planning on buying any new Yankees
merchandise or memorabilia. They will get my MLB TV money and that’s it. If the
team cannot justify to me, the consumer, that their ticket prices and
merchandise prices and YES Network subscriptions (which I know they have
basically sold out of) then I cannot justify shelling out major dollars to see
the team live. I can’t do it. I’m not going to spend hundreds of dollars to go
see Andrew Miller, Didi Gregorius, or an over the hill CC Sabathia or Carlos
Beltran. I would for Masahiro Tanaka or Michael Pineda and I damn sure would
have for Moncada, but you had that chance and you blew it. It’s time to hit
them in the pockets.
And
notice that I waited almost a full day to post this. I am not shooting off from
the hip and I am not letting my emotions or anger write this. I am calm, I am level
headed and I know what I am saying to be true and factual. I hope that you fall
in line and follow me. Rusney Castillo and now this…
Great article Daniel, very well written and to the point. I agree with all your comments.
ReplyDeleteThank you sir I appreciate it.
Deleteyankees.com...........that is were I just e-mailed Mr. Steinbrenner, to let him know how
ReplyDeletedisappointed / frustrated I am in they not obtaining Yoan Moncada.
Polite, but firm, I stated my points.
Bottom line is they no longer have patrick's money 4-5 times a year.
I closed by saying his Dad would have signed Moncada. I have zero leverage, but that
just pushes my point across.
No one is stopping you guys...give 'em hell....at ' yankees.com.'
I did it Yesterday and I expect we will not receive any sort of reply
DeleteHell no they won't. They won't acknowledge us until they see that they only have four sell outs in 2015, the home opener, Andy Pettitte Day, Bernie Williams Day and Jorge Posada Day.
DeleteI wish I could agree.
ReplyDeleteSo many people act like they KNOW something, while assuming the guys that get paid to make these decisions are idiots. Not that they don't make mistakes, but after three workouts you can't say they didn't give him a good look.
If you don't want to spend, that's fine. But don't act like they are nefarious a-holes.
The team was willing to go to $27 million. If you like a guy THAT much, and that's a ton of money for a 19 year old no matter what country he was born, what is another $4 million? I cannot agree with "they saw him three times and didn't like him" because if that were true they wouldn't be willing to go $27 million.
DeleteYou assume they knew what other teams were offering. Unless they were to trust the agent.
DeleteAnd they never said they didn't like him. They just didn't like him that much.
DeleteBRYAN VAN DUSEN :..............
DeleteMy words are not meant for others to agree. Nor do I solicit.
As for myself acting like I KNOW something, I need no help from others.
Unless you are implying that you know more than me. In that case get lost.
You took a simple comment from me, regarding a missed opportunity by Mr. Steinbrenner,
to post this grade school line............
" If you don't want to spend, that's fine. But don't act like they are nefarious a-holes."
Seems to me, that you are searching for credibility ?
Your Gravatar image says a lot. A third grader could do better.
No Bryan they loved him, they wouldn't pony up the extra 13 million dollars which is pennies to a 3 billion dollar corporation. You can't tell us meaning the Yankees that its WS or bust and then put this crap team on the field and then charge us outrageous amounts of money. That's not how business operates. You pay for a service and if the service doesn't meet your needs you take your business elsewhere. This is what is going to happen this year just like in 2012 & 13. Hal
DeleteBryan,
DeleteNo I am just reiterating what was reported, I am not assuming anything. It was reported by Andrew Marchand (I believe) that the Yankees got the call that their "top offer" wasn't going to beat the Red Sox and they chose to let him go to Boston.
If they are going to give him up to $27 million what's a couple more in the grand scheme of things?
I actually like the Southpark gravitar Patrick. Bryan is right though. I've been a fan of this team since I was a kid. I remember getting yelled at in Little League for wearing my Yankees hat to practice because I played for the Dodgers. Every year, we scream for the Yankees to bring in top tier talent. What has that gotten us? Broken down, aging players like CC, Teix, Beltran, Arod, and soon to be Ellsbury. Moncada would have been nice. But where does he play guys? From what I've read, he can't defensively play short, so Didi is a better option there. He can play second, but we already have Pirela and Refsnyder for a helluva lot less than $63 million. We could play him at third, where we just signed Headley for 4 years. Plus guys like Bichette, Jagielo, and Andujar on the way. We could move him to the outfield where we have Gardner under contract for 4 years, and Ellsbury for 6. Plus Austin and Judge on the way. So again I ask, was this signing a luxury or necessity? I wanted him, but it was a luxury. Bryce Harper was hyped this much, and he sucks. You want to pay $63 million for him?
DeleteBringing in Beltran was not bringing in top tier talent. Teixeira can still help the team and already helped us bring one World Series. CC was a great sign the first time, the second time not so much.
DeleteMoncada is 19 years old and could easily learn a position other than his natural second base. All the reports of his versatility and agility suggest that. Also you have to remember he is a year or two (or three at most) out. A lot can change between then and now. For a team that always prefers the sure thing over the unknown Moncada is more of a sure thing than either Pirela or Ref.
I get all that Daniel. But is it worth $63 million for a player that's 2-3 years away, and doesn't have an obvious position on our team? I wanted him too. Even at the cost. Because who cares about the money? It's a drop in the bucket for the Yankees. I agree, shame on Hal and his trust fund. All I'm saying is that the years of the Yankees spending whatever they had to to bring in the players WE wanted has caught up. And no offense meant here, but last offseason, you were a huge supporter of bringing in Beltran. As was I. Now we're sorry for it. Or at least I am. And also, you're wrong about Teix. Yes, he plays great defense, but his unwillingness to hit against the shift and play when his vagina is sore is killing this roster.
DeleteJeff I agree with you on Tex, great guy, great glove crap attitude for unwillingness to hit the other way and help his team out. I would cut his ass if he doesn't play the game the right way. The new hitting coach stated he is going to have discussions with him and McCann and get them to hit the other way.
DeleteAs far as Moncado you're dead wrong. The old saying is if you can hit they will find a space for you. Gardner isn't that triple threat that he couldn't be dealt, nor is the youngsters at second or Headley at third when the time came for him to play in the BIGS. This is purely a money issue and Hal has made a mockery out of the Yankees unwillingness to do what is needed to field a team that can contend. Give us season ticket holders a reduced rate on our tickets if you aren't going to spend the money to be a contender. We are not the freaking Met's in financial turmoil here. I am sure the Roid Sux will find a position for the kid and I can assure you they have a better hitting team than we do.
You're right about making room. But room has to be made. Trade the youngsters, no. Trade Gardner, no. Cut Teix, Arod, and move Headley to first, yes. If you want a contender, you have to be radical at this point. Ownership has to stop protecting their pocketbooks and fans need to stop having a bleeding heart for pieces of shit like Arod and Teix.
DeleteIt's not like the room needs to be made today though, you know? We have probably two years at least to make the room. We will def. know where we stand with Refsnyder and Pirela by then. And Moncada too.
DeletePatty boy scores with a left hook and right uppercut. I agree with you especially all the money I put out with my season tickets. I am pissed beyond all means and to put gasoline on the fire it has to be the Red Sox of all teams
ReplyDeleteHonestly I don't think it would have made me feel better if it were the Dodgers, Padres, or the Houston Astros. I wanted him in the worst way.
DeleteI wanted him, but I don't believe we "HAD to HAVE HIM". Yes I am upset about it and glad my pals and I gave up our Box a couple years ago or so.
DeleteWe didn't HAVE to have him. You're right. We built a team without any stars before and created a dynasty. As a fan though i want to see the stars, especially if I shell out my money to see those stars and that team.
DeleteAlthough I love to watch the mammoth home runs and perfect games. I am a poor, very poor loser so, I want to see the wins, the golden rings, the trophy etc.! Much more satisfaction to be gained by winning with a bunch of very good players...for me anyhow!
DeleteBe nice to have a Young Mickey Mantle to stick in the number 4 hole wouldn't it?
I'd take him I guess..... :)
DeleteLEVIN / VAN DUSEN...............
ReplyDeleteCircling the wagons around Bryan ? You are wasting your time.
To say Bryan is right, is wrong. These are opinions. Why is he more correct ?
Listen...he came out with an over the top, pompous, juvenile remark.
And, he got called on it. Not only by me...who knows nothing, according to South Park.
Let him answer, he's smarter than others. But, don't hold your breath.
As far as the South Park thing, that's my take. It reflects who you are...a cartoon.
You need to take a step back and chill. My reply want even to you.
DeleteAm I not allowed an opinion? It over that doesn't she with yours?
I said we (yes, WE... that includes me) don't know, and are left to make assumptions.
You want to know what's juvenile? Attacking someone based on a picture. I like South Park... Deal with it.
Excuse the typos. A broken hand doesn't make it easy to type.
DeleteBlame it on the broken hand, I would too :P
DeleteBryan, get the wife mad and see what happens! LOL
DeleteSorry to hear about the hand, hopefully, it is the off hand. Get well, you will need a good hand for this season...it should be a zinger in the Zoo.
