Imagining a Yankees Lineup w/ Matt Holliday

The New York Yankees have Matt Holliday in the fold for at least the 2017 season after giving the free agent a $13 million contract for next season. Holliday will DH for the Yankees but don’t be surprised to see him in left field from time to time as well as first base. Let’s assume everything is in a perfect world with everyone healthy, everyone having equal splits against RHP and LHP and that no one “needs a day” from manager Joe Girardi. What will the Yankees lineup look like in 2017? Here’s my shot at it.

Against RHP:

CF: Jacoby Ellsbury
LF: Brett Gardner
DH: Matt Holliday
C: Gary Sanchez
1B: Greg Bird
RF: Aaron Judge
2B: Starlin Castro
SS: Didi Gregorius
3B: Chase Headley

Against LHP:

CF: Jacoby Ellsbury / Brett Gardner
2B: Starlin Castro
1B: Matt Holliday
C: Gary Sanchez
RF: Aaron Judge
LF: Aaron Hicks
SS: Didi Gregorius
3B: Chase Headley
DH: Robert Refsnyder/Tyler Austin/ Rotation

Keep in mind that this is what I would do, not what I think manager Joe Girardi will do. Thanks. Leave your lineups and criticisms in the comments below.

  1. Sanchez should bat 3rd. End of discussion. Until he's hitting 240 with little production, like any other star, get him more at bats. I see a line up like this.
Ellsbury, Garner, Sanchez, Holliday, Castro, Didi, Head, Judge, Bird. And your LHP line up has Castro batting twice in the order.

    1. I just like Holliday there because he takes his walks, makes contact and reminds me a lot of Carlos Beltran. If you want Sanchez third, because some think your best hitter should hit third, then flip flop them. Either way it's a nice middle of the lineup right now on paper.

  3. Now then let's talk pitching. I want no one out there. Sign no one. We have 4 solid young guys to fill two spots and 2 or 3 other young guys behind them. I would trade Pineda or dump him if his struggles continue a little into the first part of the season. The Yankees need to sign Chapman. That's the only move I'd like them to make. That's it. Bullpen would be decent, and perhaps they could also sign a 2nd tear reliever like a Logan. Have a seller bull pen and leave every thing else to play out with youth. Listen what team do you remember in Yankees history stacked with young talent like this?. Come on Yankees fans. Sevvy, Dirty Sanchez, Bird, Austin, Judge, Austin, Mitchell, Torres, Frazier, mini me Altuve (guess who that is?) I'm totally fine with what we have. There is a plethora of talent well beyond what I mentioned. I still think Gardner and Headly should stay, but I seriously would be fine with the talent behind them getting a shot.
