BREAKING: Yankees Up Offer to Max Scherzer

UPDATE: Fantasy Alarm is saying the deal is close although no credible sources have confirmed. CLICK HERE.

According to multiple sources on Twitter, one that I especially trust in Dan Pfieffer from the Trenton Thunder, have reported big offers to Max Scherzer from the New York Yankees. One "baseball insider" claims New York has offered while Pfeiffer is hearing more of a six year offer for the former Tigers right hander. Stay tuned.

    1. Horrible move. We have Tanaka, Pineda, Green, and Phelps from the right side. We have Sabathia from the left side. Why in the world are we dealing with Boras and another one of his overpaid players instead of going after Lester?

    2. I'd rather Lester but if Scherzer has anything going for him he has about 6000 (if memory serves) less IP than Lester and about 9,000 less than Shields.

  2. I don't believe it. I think Cashman is still on the roof waiting to rapell in his elf gear. Second I would go after Lester since he doesn't cost a draft pick and more importantly he is a lefty to neutralize Boston from the left hand side of the plate, buy hey its Cashman and he has no clue

    1. Scherzer has neutralized everyone he has faced the past couple seasons. His tendencies, fly balls for instance, does scare me in New York though.

  3. I am sorry but, I wouldn't bother signing anyone of them, unless we can get Lester, we can't keep giving away draft picks and have any hope of upgrading the team in the next 3 to 10 years.
We have very good pitchers as it is, if anyone goes down we have a few guys that could step in. Yes, I realize they aren't automatic winners, but in the long run it will be much better.
I know, there he goes again...off the reservation, clue, I am always off the reservation! LOL!
We have a plethora of starting and BP pitchers, they only need the chance to show they can do the job. The good part is, they all save us money and they are younger by about 4-5 years. When those other guys are on their last legs, these guys will be reaching their best years.

    1. Personally I wouldn't sign Scherzer either but we can't deny he makes the team better for a long time.

  4. If the Yankees can't improve the offense then they have no choice but to strengthen the run prevention. And I don't think they can improve the offense (at least not in a significant way), so Lester or Scherzer seem like a good bet.

    1. Not bad at all Bryan.
IF....everyone stays healthy in 2015 and can get a SS ( Kang or Drew) for a short time, that would help us a lot.
I would think and believe we will sign Yoan, maybe both Yoans', if so we can get Drew for a year and need not go after the big name pitchers. We would end-up with many of our starters (not counting CC) under 26 years of age, or thereabout.

    2. Still losing a lot of games 1-0 and 2-1 if 2014 is repeated offensively. While I agree with the stance the pessimist in me says this won't work. Pitching was spectacular last season.

  5. Just think fans, after 2015 we can dump almost anyone and replace them with better players. Everyone under a long term contract has a lower buyout price if we wish to go there.
IF some of the kids don't go North with the team this coming Spring, I believe they will be called up by mid-season anyway.

    1. A Rod, CC, and Teix all have no trade clauses. Beltran too. We won't be eating all those contracts. We're not dumping anyone until 2017.

  6. The problem is the Elf who rappels buildings is in charge of bringing on players and lets face it he isn;t the best with making moves, yes he found a few dumpster dive moves but when it comes to pitching lets name a few of his busts. Vasquez twice, Weaver, Feliciano, Wright, Pavano, Igawa, Brown to name a few so I really don't feel to confident with this clown in charge. Shame on Hal for allowing this to happen. He is getting as pig headed as John Mara. There comes a time when you need to pull the strings and get a more competent person. Anyone of us can negotiate off a blank check. Pulling off a move like the Jays just did takes brains and Cashman doesn't have the ability to do it

    1. At the same time you can mention the Roger Clemens, Mike Mussina's, etc. of the world No GM is perfect, and I'm not even saying Cashman has necessarily been a good GM, I'm just saying on a long enough time line (and he has been with the Yankees for a long time) everyone screws up. Even Billy Beane screwed up once.

    2. Look at the track record overall and please don't give me all those world series because the core four were not from the elf? He bought his las championship and the guy is a dumpster diver.

      Delete
    3. No the core four were not Cashman's but the pieces around the core four were. Again I am not a Cashman apologist or a defender but with just Andy Pettitte you're not winning a seven game series and without good hitting and pitching you make Mo Rivera ride the bench.

With just two hitters on the team you have a 80 win season and not the greatest team of all time, in my very humble and biased opinion, in 1998. Cashman made his mark and his name off the core four but it was the David Justice, Daryl Strawberry, etc. trades and acquisitions that put the team over the top.

    4. and I know Straw was a 1996 Yankee I was just using him as an example.

  7. More bad money to cover up bad money. Is no one paying attention to this? I'll say it again. Franchise changing players are not reaching free agency in their prime years anymore! Teams are buying out their first few free agent years. We're paying for their decline! Scherzer and Lester will be aces for the next 2-3 years, adequate for a couple more, and baggage for the remainder. People say that's okay because the Yankees have the financial ability to eat the end of the contract. The problem is that they don't! Meanwhile, slugs like Teixera, ARod, and Sabathia clog the roster. Scherzer, Lester, and any of the others will be next.

  8. Other than one year 2009(?) the brass has tied Cashmans hands with giving him a budget for signing new players. When the Yankees knock on a door for a player, that players agent sees mega $$$$$$$ and contract years. With the money allocated for new signings, this was not going to happen for big game changers. So, what was he to do?
Until there was a big news media outburst about the lesser players we were signing, and why, Cashman had NO MONEY to spend on big name players. He did what he could with what he had. AFTER the big guys were all gone Hal says, here Cash, take what you need. Well, he didn't need that much because everyone was gone to other places, other than NY. But, he still picked up a couple of gems for the team didn't he? McCarthy, Prado, Ellsbury and McCann.

    1. He was given the money for Cano, the sticking point was and always will be the 10 year deal.

    2. Yes, he was given the money for Cano, but when he signed, the money went back in the shoe box under the desk.

  9. The Wall Street Journal is a good place to get some information on things such as money for each team to spend etc.!
Bottom line is, The players we would want are the players that have BIG Egos', they will never let themselves nor the team down. They are the Mos', Guidrys', Fords', Mantles', DiMaggios' and even A-Rods' and Tanks' of the baseball world! They want the biggest stage to show they are the best of the best.
They also, want to be paid the most, and if you ain't got the money...you ain't got the player!

Even though I back Cashman (in this case), the people running the team are a bunch of bookkeepers, it is time for new OWNERSHIP...cut off the head and the team will reawaken like a Phoenix in the desert!

    1. What worries me most, talking about egos, is we no longer have the "Derek Jeter effect" where everyone falls in line and does the right thing. I truly worry about that, it seems like the classiest players are gone or retired.

      Delete
    2. Why is it you think because Jeter left the team, it will go to hell?
Falling in line is for animals, not people!
I think it will be much better because the click is done with and the players will be free to be who they are, without him around! Thus, you will end-up with a looser bunch of guys.
Baseball players and people are the same...they are what they are, and hate to adapt to anothers view of what they should be.

  10. I think we will have a much better team next year because of our pitching and the often injured players will start out ready to go.
Brett, Ells, with a healthy Beltran and Pirela in the outfield.
McCann, Tex, Refsnyder, Ryan/Drew and a healthy A-Rod or Prado.

  11. I FOR ONE, am glad Derek Jeter is gone.
...........................................................no disrespect to the site mgr, but..let's move on !

Jeter was a distraction, not of his making. And, was a heavy wet blanket over the growth of this team last year.
Everyone held back. New players knew to stand back. It was Jeter's season long swan song.
A carnival. Not his fault, but that of team ownership
I am so glad the circus / sideshow / at times an aged freak show....has moved away.

Add the daily farewell videos, to the crying former team mates who constantly showed up hugging each other, and it's no wonder this team was doomed to the crapper.
The core four / five...whatever....were like characters from a long ago sad soap opera.
A sob story for themselves also. You had your time....move along.

Open the windows, let the airs of spring in. It is time to try, and catch up to Boston / Toronto.
Yes, I know..." try, and catch up."
It is time to stop dragging around crying retired players, and a short stop, who's name is not Jesus.
This team will not miss Derek Jeter, and the muppets. They will actually move on. Really !!

Winter meetings 12/7-12/11. Great time of year. Rumors, trades, and dreams.
Let's see if we can all put up a lot more posts during that period . Make this place rock.

    I will.

  12. Reed,

I never said the team would go to hell, what I meant was that Jeter could take the biggest of clubhouse cancers, personalities etc. (i.e. A Rod, Sheffield, others) and have them fall into the Yankee way. Keeping everything in the clubhouse, not publicly attacking eachother, basically avoiding the Bronx is Burning II.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Also, Reed, the money didn't go back in the shoe box it went to Tanaka, Beltran, and Ellsbury.

patrick, I am glad I don't have to waste my money on all those milk cartons and beer cans with your face on them asking if anyone has seen this man.

    ReplyDelete
  14. You are right on that score Daniel. Except, McCann and Ellsbury signed before Cano signed and they signed Beltran a few days later! As for Tank, he did sign later but, the bidding war had gone on for weeks.
So, Yes, they used the money to get what they could, (as they knew they were not going to get Cano back) and if they had all stayed healthy......but they didn't! In the words of Xang Ti; "Shit happens"!

    ReplyDelete
  15. I was wrong about McCann and Ellsbury, you're right. Beltran signed the day after Cano. Tanaka wasn't posted until the end of December or early January.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Not that either of us was right or wrong at all Daniel. Because whatever Cano did had no effect on the Tank deal at all...in my opinion. They were going to go for him, no matter what. I think we can both agree on that point.
My main concern is, many trades Cashman tries to make or not make have been over ruled by others above his pay grade. Maybe this new contract gave him veto power on trades that others want and he doesn't and the ability to make trades the same way.
That is the way IT SHOULD BE, and if it is...let the guy do his job, and see just how well ...or not...he can do the job! A bit of reminder for everyone, one year of freedom doesn't make him good or bad, but three years is plenty of time to show what one can do, or not!
One caveat to that is, if he is bad, do we stay with him for the three year time ? NOT a bit!

    1. The team probably would have gone after Tanaka with or without Cano, I guess I could agree with that, but the decision was made a lot easier without Cano. I agree with you on Cashman though he needs to be handed the full control that George promised him before handing the team over and his death. It's the only way the Steinbrenner's, the Yankees and the fans will know just how good Brian Cashman is as a GM and it will determine ultimately whether he deserves to stay here or not.

    2. Words from a smart man, Daniel!
We all know or think we know all the bad moves Cashman has made over the years! The big thing is, we don't really know who was pulling the strings on some of those deals do we? Was it George, or is it now, the Tampa Cabal?
Cashman never comes out and says he was the one or he wasn't the one forcing the deal to be made. Others have sometimes said, things like; "Cashman had no interest in A-Rod", or Jeters people come out with, "Cashman told him to go somewhere else for the money he wanted"!
The first was the truth, the second was a lie! From people in the know; it was something like this; Cashman told Jeter to go out and test the market, if he thought he was worth the money Jeter had asked for, then come back and we can work out a deal!
As with you Daniel, I think there may be better GMs out there but, who in their right mind would work under the meddling Bookkeepers.
