A-Rod's Grand Slam gives Yankees 5-1 win over Giants

CC Sabathia gave up just 1 run in 7 innings of work tonight as the Yankees took this weekend's opener from the Giants, 5-1. With this win, CC's 2013 record has now improved to 14-13, barely above .500.

With the game tied at 1 in the bottom of the seventh inning, designated hitter Alex Rodriguez both gave the Yankees the lead and broke Lou Gehrig's career grand slams record when he took a George Kontos pitch and hit it into the right field stands. That slam gave the Yankees a 5-1 lead and basically put this one in the books. As I write this, the Rays and Orioles are tied at 4 in the top of the eighth inning, so no matter what the Yankees will gain a game in the standings tonight.

  1. For all the Nunez disbelievers ...... He flashed some serious glove work tonight.

    1. He was actually considered to be a plus defender in the minor leagues but the guy seems to be inside his own head too much. He did show off a little glove today while Ryan had a couple of questionable reads.

  2. Nunez showing some power too. I'm telling everyone he has valuable skills. Pop, speed, quick hands.....future AS if his head can stay calm in NY.

    1. You are a little more confident in him than I am. I think more of him as the 2013 version of Mariano Duncan. Nice bat, nice glove, but not getting things like all star nods.

    2. Nunez is one point Twasp and I agree on. He is a slow learner and he is much better with the glove than one has seen this year. The guy had been playing out of his element last and this year. He is a SS and nothing more, they tried to make him a jack of all trades...not a good idea.
In high school and college one can get away with playing all over the infield but, this ain't high school.
As one that played many years as a 2nd baseman, the footwork and your reads are much more of an issue playing with the big guys. Every position has different footwork etc., the throws are different along with the reads. Most Utility players have a few years experience in the bigs but he was thrown into the job without and minor league training at all...not good for a slow learner.
More work at SS is what he needs and should get over the winter months.

    3. Might as well get him some work at 3B this winter because I think Brendan Ryan is gonna be our bench option at SS next season. He has been better this year with the glove than he was last year so maybe he is just a late bloomer defensively, I dunno. I hope so but you can't tell.

  3. nunez another big hit in the clutch.....too bad Cano got thrown out at home. this kid has been jerked around more than Joba the Fat was during the Joba rules fiasco. third base, second base, short stop left field.......up and down to the minors when he made an error. STILL he performs. once he's comfortable ....watch out.

  4. Anybody who thinks Cano should be sent packing ...doesnt understand the subtle beauty of his game. the guy makes plays that other players simply cannot. and he does it with the grace of a ballet dancer.

and there hasnt been a better pure hitter in the game since Rod Carew who was a magician with the bat. but he didnt have Canos raw power.

  5. Seriously if anybody wants Cano wearing another uniform next season are absolutely retarded. Also I think Nunez will be our third basement next year assuming A Rod is suspended

  6. I don't see Nunez as anything more than a good bench player. Perhaps he'd make a good regular on other teams, but the Yankees are certainly not "other teams". He may show flashes of brilliance, but they don't overshadow his bouts of sucktitude (do you like that word?).

    1. Bryan, I must respecfully disagree with that statement!
If you remember back a year or so, even some of the so called experts were saying Brett would be at best, a 4th or 5th out fielder.
Bernie Williams, Brett, Nunez are/were great athletes, not baseball players. The first two turned out ok, why not Nunez?
Baseball instincts are a God-given talent not something one learns...Berne and Nunez are in that category. Give the kid some time!

    2. And as you say that Nunez makes another spectacular play at 3B

    3. ranger, maybe you're right. But from what I've seen, I do not want Nunez as a regular.

    4. Bryan...
You have seen the bad Nunez, no doubt about that at all. If I were to go by what I have seen this year...he is outta here!
In AA, AAA he was great in everything except his shot-gun arm! I thought, he could get that under control with the right teaching...foot-work, foot-work and foot-work.
As of now, he is it...unless they sign the great glove, no-hit guy to play there...which sounds good to me!
      What say you?
