Unrealistic 2014 Free Agent Targets: Brian McCann

Brian McCann

If anyone has been reading the blog at all during the 2013 season you all know that I want Brian McCann on this team in the absolute worst way. His left handed swing was made for the short porch in Yankees Stadium and I think he can return to being a perennial .300 hitter in New York. His power and production would be a welcomed addition behind the plate and would be a sight for sore eyes after the absolute lack of offense the Yankees have seen from behind the dish this season. This signing would also make any combination of JR Murphy, Chris Stewart, and Austin Romine available on the trading block to get us another missing piece. Do I expect Brian McCann to sign with the Yankees? Well no, but the blog is called the GREEDY Pinstripes so of course I want the best catcher on the market in pinstripes for 2014.

If I am the GM I hand McCann a four year deal worth $62,000,000 with a club option for a 5th season. I know that is too much given his injury history and such but it will take at least four years to sign McCann and unlike this "bad" deal we will not be paying him in his late 30's and early 40's unlike Alex Rodriguez.

  1. I don't see why it's so "unrealistic". There are very few ways for the offense to improve for next season, and this is one of them.

    1. Unrealistic because I cannot see Hal opening the purse strings when we already have 4 catchers on the 40 man roster

    2. Correction-

We have four guys filling catching slots on the 40-man roster. But keep in mind... none of them are under contract for 2014, so they can be released without it costing the team anything. Thus allowing them to "open the purse strings" if necessary. I feel it's necessary, you feel it's necessary, anybody with a brain in their head feels it's necessary. On top of that you'll see that it's totally possible.

  2. Stewart and Cervelli are arbitration eligible and Romine and Murphy have minor league options. Neither Murphy or Romine are going to clear waivers to get them off the 40 man so it doesnt matter if they are under contract or not. The only one worth releasing is Stewart unless you want to give up on a production Cervelli due to the Biogenesis thing.

  3. I don't see a place for Stewart or Cervelli on the team. I don't believe for one second that Cervie can hit like he did at the start of this season (his OPS+ was 49 points higher than his career average). While Murphy gets more work in the minors, and Romine is the backup for McCann.

Stewart is an easy decision, as is Murphy back in AAA and Romine as the backup in MLB. Cervelli will be tough, but hopefully a trade can be worked out. Make him part of a package.

  4. Cervi is the big question mark for me. He was 49 points higher on his OPS+ but that was after another year of seasoning in the minor leagues and one season more into his prime so it's not like his stats are definitely going to come down like Vernon Well and Travis Hafner's May stats.

Girardi loves Stewart for some reason...

  5. If the Yankees don't make the playoffs Hal will open the purse strings. Even though the Yankees have 4 catchers they all are mediocre. McCann would be a big upgrade.
