Spring: New York Yankees vs. Detroit Tigers 3/24

The New York Yankees play another night game at George M. Steinbrenner Field tonight when the team plays host to the Detroit Tigers. Miguel Cabrera and Victor Martinez recently made their spring debuts for Detroit over the weekend and may see time in the game tonight for the Tigers. The two sluggers for Detroit will face off against the Yankees starter Esmil Rogers.

The game will be played at 7:05 pm ET and can be seen on the YES Network and MLB Network.

  1. Roger's is not the answer for the 5th spot inn the rotation. As this point I would rather see Patty Boy over this guy. Warren is the answer!

    1. Gee, I think I said that same thing the other day. There has always been a question as to Warrens durability, as he seems to tire near the end of the season. As the 5th starter, he would only be in the rotation for a couple months until Nova gets ready to start, and even then it depends on how well he is doing compared to Nova.

    2. ROCKET REED....born in Hell's Kitchen, and lived to tell about it.
It's scaring me, I'm starting to think like you.
Maybe that's an upgrade for me ?

    3. Hans,

Warren is definitely the answer. It's going to be Rogers only because it shouldn't be. You and I both know how this team operates.

      Reed,

Warren did get burned out last year but he came to camp early this year and prepared as a starter, he should be okay. Also you must keep in mind Capuano is getting that spot back in a few weeks anyway, it won't be a 30 start situation for whoever wins it.

    4. Daniel, you think Cappy will start if Warren has two very good starts? The answer is yes because Warren can go to the BP and Cappy is only a starter!
Well either way he will be going North with the team and that is good for him,

    5. Patrick, you may write differently than I do but, always optimistically and well written in your own style, even when we disagree!
May the wind always be at your back!

    6. Reed,

I agreed with you on Capuano getting his starting gig back no matter what. Warren could throw a pair of perfect games and still be sent back to the pen. The job is Capuano's.

  2. RED MULCH HANS.......No, you would not want to see me pitch. Unless you're into home run derby.
    As for Rogers tonight....Rogers, E 3.0 5 5 1 2 2 0 2.92.
    Better than me.

I say Rogers / Mitchel get the fifth spot.
Reason ?...The Yankees were very pleased with Warren in his bullpen role last year.
Can Rogers replicate what Warren did last year ? I think not.

Besides that, the fifth starter role could change ten times, by seasons end.

    1. Mitchell has always been my pick. I think he has the stuff to succeed. He will go through growing pains, most rookies do, but I think he could be exceptionally solid.

    2. Mitchell has looked as bad or worse than Rogers this spring. Warren belongs in the bullpen. If you're using spring performance to pick the fifth spot, it goes to Whitley. If you're not using spring performance, then it was never a competition to begin with. That being said, it's beginning to look like Drew is the player he was last year.

    3. I'm personally not using spring stats to make my decision or Warren would be there. I am using my gut mixed with a little bit of common sense. Admittedly though I totally forgot about Whitley and couldn't even tell you what his stat line looks like.

    4. Whitley has been as close to unhittable as anybody on the Yankees staff this spring. 10 innings, no runs, .194 average against. Can you explain your preference to Mitchell though? Have you seen him pitch before? Judging by his stats alone, I really don't see it. He was okay at aaa last year, but not dominate by any means. He's been very pedestrian at best. I'm just wondering if you know something about him that his numbers don't say.

    5. Levin,

Like I said I had a total lapse in memory regarding Whitley. Whitley pitched well last season also until he seemingly hit a wall innings wise. He may sneak himself onto the roster.

I have followed Mitchell as much as I could since he came into the system. I have donned him the 2015 version of Shane Greene. He is working on his curve ball and a cutter that I think can separate him from the pack. You have to remember that Phelps, Warren and Greene were never blue chip type prospects or cant miss type guys.

My preference towards Mitchell, besides the fact that I am a prospect humper, is that he is best suited for the rotation. It's the rotation or Scranton for him in my opinion. Warren helps the rotation but hurts the bullpen. I don't think Esmil Rogers should be a starting candidate because I don't think his stuff warrants it. Mitchell's stuff may be less than a finished product but he is best suited to start in this situation, again in my opinion.

  4. I messed it all up the 1st time...sorry!
Ok guys we have 5 guys that one or more of us thinks should/will be in the rotation...Mitchell, Warren, Rogers, Cappy and Whitley (Not counting Nova)!
Cappy is out for a few weeks, Cappy and Mitchell are starters only...as of now! That may put Warren in the BP, where he is nasty! Cappy is out as of right now! Rogers may end up being another Dellin with his fastball, he needs a 2nd pitch he can count on, going only 1 or 2 innings at a time he can cut that fastball loose...BP? Why not, Dellin started out as a starter!? But I think they may want him in the rotation at a later time (AAA to get his sh-t together?) That leaves Mitchell and Whitley.
So, the question is, "Will it be Mitchell, Whitley or XYZ "?

    1. New York can survive a couple weeks without Warren in the pen, especially if they bring Lindgren north. It will probably be him.
