Dave Dombrowski May Have Done it Again to Brian Cashman

The Detroit Tigers seem to be making a habit of plucking players away from Yankees GM Brian Cashman and getting the better end of seemingly every single deal. It all started when Dave Dombrowski, then the Florida Marlins GM, stole Mike Lowell away from the Yankees for three busts in their pitching staff and it may end with Dombrowski, now the Tigers GM, getting Shane Greene in a three team trade for Didi Gregorius.

I know this article may be written a bit prematurely on both the Greene front and the Didi front but if history is any indicator of the future then New York may be in trouble. Greene has started two games and pitched 16 innings without allowing a run, something the Yankees would likely give up a ton more for right about now, while Gregorius has struggled not only with the bat but with the glove and on the base paths as well. Whether this is what Gregorius is when he is exposed as an everyday player or if the Derek Jeter chants are really starting to get to him I’m not sure we’ll ever know. One thing we do know is that Dombrowski has consistently gotten the better of Cashman over the years.

Remember when the Yankees traded for Jeff Weaver while Ted Lilly went to the Oakland Athletics and Jeremy Bonderman went to Detroit? Weaver was bombed in Detroit, Bonderman was more than solid in Detroit and Dombrowski won again. The same can be said for when the team traded Gary Sheffield to the Tigers for three more arms that turned out to be busts while Sheffield continued to hit the cover off the ball as a member of Detroit, another victory for Dombrowski. Even when the Yankees do well in these deals, like the deal that brought 40 home run and 200 strikeout power in Curtis Granderson to the Bronx, Dombrowski still finds a way to pull an Austin Jackson and Max Scherzer out of the deal and win the trade.

So the latest trade that sent the Yankees Greene to Detroit, Arizona’s Gregorius to New York and Detroit’s Robbie Ray and prospect to Arizona may be too premature to call but so far it’s not looking good for the Yankees and for Brian Cashman.

  1. No doubt in my mind that Cashman got fleeced. Let's face facts here...Cashman is a dumpster diver GM that has had success trading away lower level talent, however when it comes to trades of higher importance he has gotten his clock cleaned. I know it's early but I believe I was the only one on here who said when the trade was made it was a mistake especially when the player you get back is the same player you have on the roster already. Greene by no means is a CY pitcher, however he showed in his time in NY that he can produce and more importantly an innings eater. You don't trade away good arms. I am not surprised by the start of this team because this is the team that Cashman assembled. It's not built to win. Guy's 85 wins if lucky and I don't see it

    1. I know it's just two starts but Greene has been Cy Young material and the best pitcher in MLB this season thus far

  2. Yes he has, however that won't last. I still think it was a terrible move but I've grown accustomed to them from Cashman.

  3. HANS-el & Gretel says...." that Didi Gregorius does not have a brain."
I'm watching this experiment going into game ten, sporting a .167 BA.
I can't argue with the red mulch man.

    1. I just watched him physically run into Chase Headley while he waited for a pop up in foul territory to come down. You can't make this stuff up. The ball fell in the stands, FYI.

  4. DAVE DOMBROWSKI....is he really that smart ?
I don't think so. That shirt he is wearing ?....I would have thrown it in the clothing for the poor collection box, behind my supermarket.

  5. DANIEL, of Ellijay.....Lets bring you up to date.

Thank you for checking the milk containers, and the Coors Light cans...nice touch.
Dan, in my working world, plants & trees..etc, this is my season.
Early rising, late returning. It comes with the territory.

I read your site every night, but I am too gassed to post.
Thanks for your concern, I will settle back in as we move along.
In the meantime.....run with Hans-el, and your stable of talented contributors.

Is Jeff still in jail, down in Delaware ?

    1. Just checking in sir. Only do because I care. Thank you for the update. Now I'll just add a mustache to your picture and scribble out the name and change it to Jeff Levin.

    2. I'm still here little p, thanks for your concern. Delaware and jail are 2 places I've never been. I've just been left speechless by what I've seen so far. We were supposed to be built around pitching and defense. I've never seen more balls booted around the infield in my life. Our infield has more holes then a cheese grader. Does anybody else notice the abundance of ground balls getting through our "improved" infield? Eovaldi gave up like 9 hits the other day, and there were probably 2 that were actually hit hard. Same with Sabathia. If this defense is what we're going to be stuck with all year, it's going to be a long season.

  7. KEN REED......how the hell are you ?
Was in your old neighborhood, west side of Manhattan, last week.
I doubt if you would recognize the streets you grew up on.
Still plenty of Irish bars....the old guys were asking for you.

    1. I doubt it very much, they never made it out of the Old Kitchen. I have never found a day in my life where I even contemplated going back for a visit.

This is the season things start picking up for you isn't it? You will be rich enough someday to spend all the winter months at the beach! Lucky for you but, as I still do my own yard work, I know how hard the work can be. Good luck Patrick and don't end up hurting your back or something like that!

  8. THE SCARE CROW....from the 'Wizard of OZ'....like Gregorius had no brain either.
Assuming that Hans-el is correct.....I will now only refer to Gregorius as the 'Scare Crow'.

IE :...The Scare Crow went 0-4 tonight. Now batting .152

    1. Hansel is very much so correct and I don't buy that crap he is only 25 years old stuff. The mistakes he is making is baseball 101. Another two weeks and you will see Drew at SS and Didi where he belongs down in Scranton. I can live with Refsnyder at 2b

    2. Did either of you see him run into Chase Headley when he was under a foul ball trying to catch it? Wasn't even his ball...

  9. FIVE HUNDRED....that would be a great place to be. After this horrid start.
A sweep of the Rays is not too much to ask for ? ....If they are too tough, forget it !
Sunday night.... sitting at .500 would be easier to digest ?

    1. sweeping the Rays would be awesome. For anything it would give the team a little confidence and momentum.

    2. .500.....Not Bad ?
Right now the Yankees are 6-6, and one game out of first place. Exhale.

Dumbest image of the week ?...Dave Dombrowki wearing Stevie Wonder's
      favorite shirt.
Gregorius has earned the name..'Scarecrow'. What has gone wrong here ?
Jeff Levine is not in jail ! Great news, but I'm rather surprised.

One game out of first place, and Coors Light in the box. Life is good.

  10. WHAT SAY YOU ?..........
Do you know when a photo of someone reminds you of another ?
This one had been nagging me for days, before I got it right.

There is a dead ringer of an ex-Yankee, for a current Yankee.....Nathan Eovaldi.
Remember David Reghetti ? Phil Rizzuto's favorite Yankee ?

    Eovaldi / Reghetti....their faces are inter-changeable. Scary.

    1. I could see where you would say that. It's close. Interchangeable I'm not so sure. Good catch either way.
