Should The Yankees Have Gone All-In?

When I first saw the current standings in the American League East, with the Yankees sitting 4.5 games behind the Toronto Blue Jays, I shook my head in disgust. On August 1st the Yankees were 5 games in first place... ahead of the Baltimore Orioles (now there's an ugly story). The Blue Jays were actually 6 games back at the time.

"Ahhhhh!"

But then I remembered that Toronto's future is not good. For starters, they are unlikely to re-sign David Price. Until they traded for Troy Tulowitski, the Jays' largest contract was Russell Martin's 5 years and $82 million. $82 million to $200 million? I don't see that, especially now that they'll be paying Troy $94 million through 2020 (not including the 2021 club option, which has a $4 million buyout).

So I decided to do what Daniel does a lot of, and start a Twitter Poll.

I asked our followers... "Would you rather the Yankees did little or went all in on a World Series push like the BlueJays?" Here are a few replies...
When it all comes down to it, this is exactly what I was thinking. Toronto fans can beat their chests now, but sooner or later we're going to be the one's laughing.

While I agree with Terry that the Yankees could have added a little something to the bench, I disagree with the bullpen part. The team's bullpen was fine at the time. I say "was", because injuries have taken away the depth the bullpen had.
I can see the Yankees building something close to another dynasty. No, I don't expect four more World Series titles in five years, but a few titles within the next ten years is feasible.

A compliment to Brian Cashman? Wow!
Whether or not I complained would depend on who they traded for who. If the Mateo for Kimbrel/Gyorko trade happened, I would have complained a little because Jedd is almost worthless. But while losing Mateo would have stunk, having a three-headed monster in the bullpen (Betances-Miller-Kimbrel... WOW!) would have been awesome.
When I said "sooner or later" in response to Sean Manning's tweet earlier, the "sooner" referred to this.
While I don't agree with going all-in this season, I don't blame some fans for wanting them to. The Yankees could always buy more players in free agency, but my issue with this comes from the fact that free agency is not what it used to be. So going all-in could mean hurting the future. I want a nice run of seasons, not a great season followed by a few "meh" ones.

Thanks for the replies. Daniel has done a bunch of these Twitter Polls, and I'm probably going to have some here or there. So be on the look out, and get your opinion heard.

  1. Bryan the Yanks needed to add a SP and a bat, no one said they need to go all in, they however needed to add more than Ackley. Again it goes back to the two clown princes in Cashman and Hal. One not being able to make a decent trade and the other not willing to take on money. It had nothing to do with keeping prospects. We could've gotten something for Sanchez as he isn't in the future of the Yanks and you could've pieced him with some other pieces to get something more than Ackley

    1. I don't agree Hans. We all, well I don't recall your exact position, noted that we wanted the Yankees to do something but we couldn't find an obvious place to upgrade. Our starters were awesome, our bullpen was great and we had the second best run scoring offense in baseball.

That was before July, the August trade deadline is an entirely new ball game. You can't simply go out and get someone, you get blocked or the player you wanted gets pulled back.

  2. Burch I'm sure if you look back at my prior posts you will see I cried about a bat and a starter so I'm not sure about that. I have said NUMEROUS times that Cashman couldn't get make a deal because he sucks and Hal won't take on money. In fact my buddy and I kept complaining about Ackley coming on board and I'm sure Cashman could've gotten more with giving up Sanchez and others

    1. Hans, believe it or not, I am not sticking up for Cashman when I say, Cashman will not get the money to make a good trade and giving up more than other teams have to for a player is crazy!
Cashman is doing what is best for the team or, as best he can when he has no money given to him.
As I and others have pointed out, Cashman is not the best but who could do better without money?
Like I have said; "Follow the Money", right back to Hal's door! One can't trade for a Cadilac without money down.
Sorry, this is all Hals doing, with the money and Cashman not giving up any of the three or five best players for a 2-month rental! I can't fault him for Not trading away our best for a rental.

  3. Reed I didn't want rentals, I want Hammel's since he is under control for a few years and even though Tanaka pitched great yesterday I'm not sure he is a number one any longer or until he truly believes his arm won't fall off from the tear in the ligament. I don understand that Cashman is blocked by Hal the coupon clipper. I think it is fair to say we both agree that Hal is not going to spend money, however as I mentioned in numerous posts that the elf could've upgraded with a superior player other than Ackley. Sanchez alone would bring a better player off the bench than Ackley. The elf is just as much to blame for putting the Yanks in this position in the first place with his terrible baseball operations people in charge of drafting players.

    1. Where would this far superior player to Ackley have played? besides the obvious second base (and there were not any really good second baseman available unless you moved a Starlin Castro or Jose Reyes to 2B but then again comes the money situation which admittedly by you is not Brian Cashman's department or fault).

    2. My comment to Reed is that I agree that Hal says no to adding large sums of money, however as I keep bringing up a package starting with Sanchez who will never catch for the Yanks as they are loaded there could have fetched a better player than Ackley. Do I have a specific player in mind the answer is no

    3. I didn't ask for a specific player, I asked for a specific position other than second base (because there weren't any true second base options unless you turn a SS into a 2B like I stated above).

    4. Ken H, in reply to your first statement I have a question for you.
Did you know that "Stick" Michaels is a drafting and player advisor to Cashman/Hal?
I agree, Hammel's would have been nice, but the trade was all one sided...not in our favor at all, too much in players on the up-side for us to give up for a pitcher no matter who he is. I wouldn't have made that deal.

  4. I wanted a SP and a bat. The bat could be the 4th OF or a Pitcher like Aaron Small that can give us innings. That's what I wanted outside of Hammell's

    1. We already have a 4th OF... Chris Young. Ellsbury was healthy, Gardner was still hot and Beltran was our best hitter besides Teix and maybe A Rod.

    2. By the way did you just see the stellar base in the Ray's game by Gardner again or am I wrong about that one as well?

    3. I agree with your wanting a very good bat and SP Ken H but, the one SP pitcher that SHOULD be dropped inplace of a good SP would be CC...we know that wouldn't happen! So we get this great pitcher to be our #1 but, for every game he wins...CC looses one so, it would be a wash anyhow.
As Daniel said, where would we put another good bat?

  5. Giving up our best prospects for one player/pitcher is the way it was done in the olden days. That is why we had NO farm system to speak of. The rules have changed, we can't just go out and buy a player in FA anymore because of the Salary Restrictions. If we try a trade, they ask more than the player is worth...because we are the Yankees!
A good mix of veterans and younger players is the way things have to be done now days and IF things work out right that can happen within a couple of years. A-Rod, Tex, CC, Beltran will be gone in a year or two...those guys will be hard to replace (IF, they were younger) but we have some people ready to jump at the chance to try!

    1. I agree the team needs youth, that's how the greatest teams are built. You build the core from within and then you fill in with veterans.
