So there I was sitting there watching the Yankees game on Tuesday night, the night that Nathan Eovaldi held the Toronto Blue Jays to just two hits in a contest New York had to win, when I got a random tweet on Twitter. The tweet is above from Franks Yanks asking me which member of the current Yankees roster I'd like to see punch Jose Bautista in the face. I graciously answered like I do every mention on Twitter and quickly informed him that I would be stealing his idea while giving him all the credit. This sounded like a Twitter Poll to me!

Most Popular Article of the Week: Twitter Poll: My Take on Buying or Selling

The Twitter Poll went live this morning and in it I asked Yankees fans and readers of The Greedy Pinstripes if they thought the team should buy or sell and I asked why. You guys had your say and now I feel like it’s my turn to have mine and respond a bit. I touched on this a bit in the actual article as I put little responses under some of the comments but I wanted to put all my thoughts down on paper here in one nice and tidy place. Should the Yankees buy or sell at the August 1st trade deadline? Why? Here is my take on the matter for whatever it is worth.


To be completely honest before conducting that Twitter Poll I was one of the fans jumping up and down for a fire sale. I wanted a laundry list of players moved including, but not limited to, Andrew Miller, Aroldis Chapman, Nathan Eovaldi, Michael Pineda, Ivan Nova, CC Sabathia, Mark Teixeira, Carlos Beltran, Brett Gardner, Aaron Hicks and Chase Headley. Out with the old and in with the new but after conducting the poll I may be teetering towards another edge. An edge more towards the middle if that makes any sense. I want the Yankees to not only sell but I want them to buy as well. Confused? Good, keep reading.


This is a terrible comparison and analogy but it is the first one that came to mind. The Texas Rangers bought Cole Hamels at the trading deadline last season not with the hopes of making a run at the World Series in 2015, although they did make the postseason, but with the dreams of pairing him with Yu Darvish in 2017 as well. The Yankees can buy in a similar fashion but not with their eyes on 2016 or even 2017 but with their goals set towards building for 2018 and beyond.


So the Yankees sell some or all of the list above, and FYI I did not include Alex Rodriguez on it because even after his comeback tour in 2015 his contract is still unmovable, and stock up for the future but they could also buy. Again I bring you a bad comparison but this gives you an idea of what I am talking about. In no way, shape or form can I see the Rays trading a player like Matt Moore to the Yankees but he is the kind of the player the Yankees could target in any trade. A cheap, young player they can buy low on due to injuries or whatever that has a real shot at bouncing back. It also doesn’t hurt that Moore is signed pretty cheap through the 2019 season which fits the mold and goes with the plan.



So conceivably, and yes it is easier said than done, the Yankees could both buy and sell at this year’s trading deadline. It won’t be easy and it will have to be all hands on deck to make it worth but it could happen. But will it? Stay tuned.

Nathan Eovaldi to the Bullpen, Now There’s an Original Idea

Good morning Yankees family and welcome back. By now we’ve all surely recovered from the shock of going to work yesterday after a long holiday weekend and now we can get caught back up on our Yankees news. Over the weekend, after a horrid month of June and a bad start to the month of July, the Yankees have decided to move Nathan Eovaldi into their bullpen and Chad Green into the starting rotation. Now there’s an original idea and the first time I saw it mentioned, although I am willing to admit it may not be the first place it was mentioned in all of the world and on the web, was here on The Greedy Pinstripes when Donnie Passmore mentioned it.

We did a Twitter Poll about it and then I had my say in the matter, seen HERE and HERE, and overall not many people agreed with the decision. I guess the Yankees were reading and decided if Daniel Burch disagrees and so do the readers and followers of the blog then it must be a good idea. One word comes to mind from my childhood… “Doh!”

Michael Pineda starts tonight for the Yankees meaning Eovaldi should start tomorrow in the opener against the Cleveland Indians but instead Ivan Nova will move up a day and Chad Green will get another crack at it before big CC closes out the unofficial first half for New York. Eovaldi has been skipped and has been delegated to the bullpen, I don’t care if the Yankees simply said they would use him as a reliever because Dellin Betances and Andrew Miller had pitched three of the previous four days entering the debacle on Monday afternoon.

In Eovaldi’s last six outings he has posted a 0-4 record with a 9.20 ERA. That’s demotion worth if I’ve ever seen it. And you heard it here first, although we’ll never get credit for the idea anyway. It was probably Joel Sherman’s original idea.

The Nathan Eovaldi Twitter Poll: My Take

Hello again Yankees family. This morning and for most of the day yesterday we discussed the idea brought forth by a commenter on the blog that suggested moving Nathan Eovaldi to the Yankees bullpen rather than watching him give up home runs like a Little League pitcher in the Yankees starting rotation. I thought the idea and comment was so interesting that I turned it into a Twitter Poll this morning giving you, the fans, your say and your take on the matter. Now it’s my turn. Should the Yankees consider moving Eovaldi to the bullpen giving New York four potential relief pitchers that can throw 100 MPH? Why or why not? 

In a word, no. Not right now anyway so I leave that word with an asterisk. The New York Yankees need starting pitching help much more than they need bullpen help at this particular moment and taking from a weakness to build on a strength doesn’t make sense to a team that states they are in it for the long haul with this team. Sure Eovaldi sucked it up in the month of June, I’m sorry to be so blunt but there’s no better way to say it or sugar coat it, but lest we forget how great he was during the month of May and for much of the second half in 2016. Pitchers go through spells and phases and sometimes they just lose complete control of a pitch and then complete control of their confidence resulting in a snowball effect. We just have to hope Eovaldi is now at the bottom of the hill.  

I am not one to talk up Larry Rothschild like the second coming of Jesus by any means but he has done a lot of good things since being hired as the Yankees pitching coach under Joe Girardi. Look at just recently this season when Michael Pineda was struggling and posting the highest ERA of any starting pitcher who qualified not only in the American League but in all of baseball. It was Larry that made the suggestion to alter the arm angle and slot a bit and the results have been encouraging. Hell, they have been more then encouraging. They have been great and Pineda is back to being the Pineda that Brian Cashman saw all that potential in all those years ago and the Pineda that we all saw the potential in as recently as this spring training. Why couldn’t or won’t Larry do the same the Eovaldi? 

Could the Yankees move Eovaldi to the bullpen eventually? Sure. Not before this current contract is up though. New York has to fix him and they have to fix him now. They have to in order to compete and potentially keep him and extend him and if they don’t compete they have to fix him in order to trade him for a useful piece or two to plug in at a later time. Now if the Yankees extend him and this continues then the option should be on the board, much like it was with Dellin Betances in a totally unrelated situation, to get something out of Eovaldi rather than nothing but we’re not there yet. Not even close. 

So for now Eovaldi is staying in my rotation for better or worse and I stand behind the decision and the potential repercussions that come along with it. It just makes too much baseball sense not to make the move at this time. Shake your magic 8-ball and ask me again later though and I may be singing an entirely different tune.

Just one day after the MLB Draft is over and done with for another year leave it to me to beg the question whether Major League Baseball should scrap the whole idea or not. That’s me though, always asking the questions that most bloggers and paid writers refuse to ask because it’s not click worthy. So I beg the question, should Major League Baseball abandon the draft altogether and adapt a policy much like the international free agency market giving all the power of choice back to the players and not the teams? If yes, why? If no, why not?

Brian Cashman could possibly be on the verge of upsetting the masses once again by signing a second baseman to a lucrative contract that has no business being on the roster. Two years ago it was Brian Roberts, almost out of necessity, while last year it was Stephen Drew. This year it could be Asdrubal Cabrera who the Yankees are said to be interested in according to multiple reports, but why? Why do the Yankees have that little confidence in Robert Refsnyder and why do they make it so blatantly obvious to both him and the fans? Or maybe the fans would welcome Cabrera on a one-year deal, who knows? Sounds like an idea for the return of the Twitter Poll:

The bag was more mixed than I thought it would be. I still don’t buy it though and I said as much in the responses on twitter. Cabrera is marginal offensively and marginal defensively, at worst so is Refsnyder. Cabrera will either plateau statistically, and he wasn’t exactly great in 2015, or decline while the sky is the limit for Refsnyder. Sure Cabrera is a former shortstop and sure he is a switch hitter but he’s also been working in the infield a lot longer than Refsnyder has and he’s still terrible defensively in my opinion.

For the first time since the 2012 letdown and broken ankle by Derek Jeter the New York Yankees have reached the postseason (unofficially but you might as well say it's a done deal), hallelujah! The fact that New York would make the postseason brought up an interesting debate about whether the team should celebrate a Wild Card berth. Manager Joe Girardi stated that the Yankees would celebrate the accomplishment which kicked off our latest Twitter Poll, should the Yankees celebrate their Wild Card berth or shouldn’t they have?

There are two sides to every story including the side that says the team should NOT have celebrated the playoff berth. Some even said that making the playoffs as a Wild Card wasn’t even a playoff game. Well I hate to break it to you, yes it was, but here are the responses and their arguments against the celebrations:

Say what you will about what the Yankees used to do, the World Series or bust mentality or the addition of a one-game playoff system for the two Wild Card teams. The Yankees didn’t pick the Wild Card system, they didn’t pick to share their profits or pay a luxury tax of 50% on every dollar spent over $178 million. The Yankees didn’t choose to see George Steinbrenner die and the team did not choose to see Hal Steinbrenner run the team in an entirely different, and fiscally responsible, manner. You can bet your ass the Houston Astros or whoever wins the 2^nd Wild Card will celebrate and you can bet than any of the 10 teams in the American League that don’t make the postseason in 2015 would have celebrated. It’s just my opinion but the Yankees should have celebrated and good for them for doing so. The 162 game schedule is a grind and the playoffs, whether it’s one game, three games or a five game series, is the reward. There are no trophies just for showing up in Major League Baseball so celebrate that you were better than the rest.

The New York Yankees watched as Ivan Nova pitched in a game that the team absolutely needed against the Toronto Blue Jays. New York had originally penciled in Masahiro Tanaka to start the series finale and the season finale between these two teams but a hamstring injury that Tanaka suffered while bunting against the New York Mets kept the Japanese right-hander from making the start. In the hours after the announcement the sky was once again falling around New York with the beat writers and fans either showing their frustrations or defending the decision with Tanaka’s elbow and his best interest in mind. The Yankees quickly did an about-face just a few days later when they had Tanaka do his regular between-start workouts and announced that the team may not wait a full turn after Tanaka’s originally Wednesday start to insert him back into the rotation. Was this injury simply exaggerated so the team could justify planning for a potential, and likely, Wild Card one-game playoff round without hearing the backlash from the fans and the media by intentionally skipping the Yankees ace against the team they are chasing in the American League East Division race?

If it looks like a fish and it smells like a fish then it’s probably a fish. I can understand the decision to essentially give up on the AL East Division and to plan for the Wild Card round. I can understand it and I wholeheartedly agree with it, although I understand where some would not, but I don’t appreciate being played for a fool. Honestly I don’t think we as fans will ever know the 100% truth but the fact that Tanaka pitched five innings of dominant baseball after suffering the hamstring injury and after doing his normal routine in between starts despite the fact that the Yankees coddle their pitchers, especially Tanaka, just seems awfully convenient to me. When did baseball become so political? Shoot me straight and I’ll vote for you, politician or not.

Should The Yankees Have Gone All-In?

When I first saw the current standings in the American League East, with the Yankees sitting 4.5 games behind the Toronto Blue Jays, I shook my head in disgust. On August 1st the Yankees were 5 games in first place... ahead of the Baltimore Orioles (now there's an ugly story). The Blue Jays were actually 6 games back at the time.

"Ahhhhh!"

But then I remembered that Toronto's future is not good. For starters, they are unlikely to re-sign David Price. Until they traded for Troy Tulowitski, the Jays' largest contract was Russell Martin's 5 years and $82 million. $82 million to $200 million? I don't see that, especially now that they'll be paying Troy $94 million through 2020 (not including the 2021 club option, which has a $4 million buyout).

So I decided to do what Daniel does a lot of, and start a Twitter Poll.

I asked our followers... "Would you rather the Yankees did little or went all in on a World Series push like the BlueJays?" Here are a few replies...

While I agree with Terry that the Yankees could have added a little something to the bench, I disagree with the bullpen part. The team's bullpen was fine at the time. I say "was", because injuries have taken away the depth the bullpen had.

Whether or not I complained would depend on who they traded for who. If the Mateo for Kimbrel/Gyorko trade happened, I would have complained a little because Jedd is almost worthless. But while losing Mateo would have stunk, having a three-headed monster in the bullpen (Betances-Miller-Kimbrel... WOW!) would have been awesome.

While I don't agree with going all-in this season, I don't blame some fans for wanting them to. The Yankees could always buy more players in free agency, but my issue with this comes from the fact that free agency is not what it used to be. So going all-in could mean hurting the future. I want a nice run of seasons, not a great season followed by a few "meh" ones.

The New York Yankees have some impeccable timing, don’t they? I mean that with the utmost sarcasm as I reference the injuries to Mark Teixeira, Nathan Eovaldi and Brett Gardner while the offense continues battle against a bout of season-long inconsistency. Honestly I don’t see any teams that are trailing the Yankees in the Wild Card chase that really scare me or that I think are good enough to rattle off 18-of-20 or some insane run like that. Even with the Yankees struggling the team is still finding new and inventive ways to win so it’s not like the team is falling off the face of the Earth. They have a decent cushion for the first Wild Card spot and teams like the Minnesota Twins, Tampa Bay Rays, Baltimore Orioles and Texas Rangers simply don’t scare me that much. Ask me again in another two weeks and my answer may change again, that’s human nature and this is baseball, but right now I believe the team, will make the postseason 100%.

Nathan Eovaldi earned his 14th victory of the season yesterday afternoon in Atlanta against the Atlanta Braves despite only lasting five innings. Eovaldi had pitched better of late, although yesterday was not his ideal start that he wanted at this point in the season, and has added strikeouts and length to his game. With the Toronto Blue Jays leading the American League East Division and with the likelihood that the team may never lose again, slight exaggeration.. very slight, the Yankees may have to settle for hosting a one game playoff in the American League Wild Card Round. Who would the Yankees start? Would it be the rookie, Luis Severino? Would it be the ace, Masahiro Tanaka? Or could it be their winning-est pitcher, Nathan Eovaldi?

The Yankees offense never seems to take a night off with Eovaldi on the mound but I honestly think Eovaldi should not start that game. If the days of rest lines up that way I can't say I'd be less than confident along with the Yankees bullpen and short leash from Joe Girardi but if everyone is rested that start has to go to Severino or Tanaka. Eovaldi has been good, sometimes great, but his 14-2 pitching line may be a little deceiving when you look at it in the rear view mirror.

The New York Yankees rebounded nicely in their game yesterday afternoon with the Houston Astros but how could they not? After you allow 15 runs to a team the night before almost anything can be constituted as a bounce back. Ivan Nova started that game and looked strong and sharp until he allowed a triple that shouldn’t have been in my opinion that led to everything falling apart. With Nova now ineffective in multiple starts and CC Sabathia on the disabled list I truly wanted to know what you, the fan, thought the Yankees should do if and when CC comes back from the DL. Should the team insert CC into the rotation and go back to the six-man rotation idea? Should Nova be bounced to the bullpen in favor of CC? Should both go to the bullpen and Adam Warren or Bryan Mitchell get the chance to start? Be heard, it’s The Greedy Pinstripes Twitter Poll:

CC’s knee proved that it could not be counted on over the course of a season. With every opportunity the Yankees had they gave CC an extra day of rest and with every look of a big inning on the horizon manager Joe Girardi pulled Sabathia despite his pitch count or inning total. His knee was still drained twice already this season, as expected, and he was still placed on the DL with the same degenerative knee condition. CC cannot make 25 starts a season anymore because his knee cannot handle it. I hate to say it, I like CC and his teammate and fiery competitor attitude that he brings to the table but reality is reality. Sabathia and the Yankees have already said the only remedy to this knee injury is to stop pitching. That’s not really an option in New York, especially with that remaining contract that will likely go through the 2017 season as his vesting option triggers, so why not limit him and get some value out of him as a LOOGY?

You know the splits that he has against left-handed batters and right-handed batters, it’s not pretty, so pull a move that the defending World Series champion San Francisco Giants would pull and move him to the bullpen despite his former status or contract. He’s open for it and it is what’s best for the team.

Armchair Quarterback: Should New York Have DL'd Mark Teixeira?

Mark Teixeira missed over a week’s worth of baseball with a bruised bone in his leg after fouling a pitch off it at possibly the worst time in the season. Teixeira may be the most indispensable part of the Yankees offense and defense this season and to miss over a week without a disabled list stint not only leaves the offense searching for others to step up but it also leaves the team with a short bench. It’s really a moot point now and there isn’t much sense in second guessing and playing an arm chair quarterback after the fact but I felt all along that it would be wise to immediately DL Teixeira and call up Robert Refsnyder, here's why.


The Yankees are in the midst of a dog fight in the American League East Division race with the Toronto Blue Jays and cannot afford Teixeira sitting at all during the rest of August, September or October because his leg is sore. The team, in my opinion, should have immediately DL’d Teixeira and called up Refsnyder to add another option to the lineup and the bench. Teixeira cannot simply “take a day” unless the team is ready to let the division go by the wayside and settle for a Wild Card. It is imperative to get Teixeira 100% healthy and if he’s going to miss over a week anyway why not just be sure? You know?


The Yankees have been able to survive without Teixeira and if he's 100% at this point then whatever, I just don't believe that he is. I hope I'm wrong and I hope this is a moot point come October but the pessimist in me won't allow myself to believe it. What say you? Leave your thoughts in the comments section of the site.

I am absolutely all-in for the New York Yankees this season and I agree with the above tweet that it is American League East Division title or nothing. This is simply a hypothetical Twitter Poll this morning, if the Yankees did have to settle for a Wild Card and a one-game playoff who does Joe Girardi have starting that contest? Assuming that everyone is well rested and on their normal rest who starts that game if you, not Joe Girardi, is making the decision? Is it the rookie who seems unfazed by the bright lights in Luis Severino or is it the ace that's honestly never been there before either in his Major League career in Masahiro Tanaka?

Personally I give the ball to Severino with a short leash if I am making the decision. We have only seen Severino make a handful of starts in his MLB career and his worst may have been his start Saturday against the Indians as he struggled with command and he still won the game. Severino's stuff is so good that even with less than stellar command he still found a way to hold Cleveland to just one run and still found a way to win. Severino strikes out nearly 10 batters a game and has not shown that he is going to be home run prone, the same cannot be said for Tanaka. This is not in any way meant to disrespect Tanaka, he's the ace and he's the starting pitcher that will lead us to the promised land, this is merely my personal preference.
