Is CC Sabathia Still An Ace?

The Yankees entered the 2013 season with a lot of question marks, but so far, the pitching staff has had all the answers. The Yankees currently lead the American League in ERA, and boast what would be one of the highest ERA+ rates in franchise history, so, needless to say, the mound has not been an area of concern. However, the Yankees do have a few first world pitching problems. One of them is named CC Sabathia.

The rest of the league isn’t going to take up a collection for Sabathia, whose 3.43 ERA is in line with his career rate, but it’s been hard not to come away from his outings with some minor concerns. The most obvious red flag has been the big lefty’s diminished velocity, which has been down approximately 4mph off recent highs and two ticks from last year’s average speed. Granted, Sabathia’s fastball is still north of 90mph, and plenty of pitchers have been successful at that speed, but, as the gap with his change-up narrows, the left hander may need to compensate in some other way. Although the sample size is admittedly small for such an evaluation, Sabathia’s fastball and change are each rated below average in terms of pitch type linear weights, and the lack of deception could be one of the causes (one of the effects could be a lower swing rate on pitches out of the zone).

In terms of earned runs allowed, Sabathia hasn’t suffered too much because of the lost zip on his fastball. However, the peripherals are a little more ominous. In particular, the lefty has been allowing more hits (despite inducing fewer ground balls) and home runs, while striking out fewer, which, in the current climate, is perhaps the most meaningful bellwether. If these trends continue, statistical models suggest the impact will eventually take a toll on Sabathia’s ERA.
It’s still early, and Sabathia is only months removed from off season surgery, so, once the weather warms up, the left hander may start lightening up the radar gun once again. If so, the early season worries about his velocity and less than stellar performance will seem rather silly. However, as the only starting pitcher under contract after this season, Sabathia remains a vital component of the Yankees’ present and future. That’s why even irrational concern about the lefty is not completely unfounded, and the following question has resonance: is CC Sabathia still an ace?
Even if Sabathia is starting to veer off a bit, it’s important to remember he is coming from a Hall of Fame path. That leaves the big left hander plenty of wiggle room to maintain his effectiveness even in the face of diminished skills. Nonetheless, it isn’t unreasonable to wonder if Sabathia’s days as an elite ace are waning, or even in the past. At 32 years old, it would be more of surprise if he wasn’t forced to make a concession to age, but because he has been so reliable and consistent, it might be hard for Yankee fans to accept this inevitability. However, the real issue is whether Sabathia can accept it. If so, and he adapts accordingly, the questions about Sabathia’s status as an ace just might be answered affirmatively.

This Day In Yankees History 5/26

On this day in 2000 at Yankees Stadium against the Boston Red Sox a fan fell from the upper deck and remained motionless on the screen behind home plate for five minutes. Suddenly the man would sit up and raise both of his hands high and the 24 year old man was promptly arrested for disorderly conduct. Should have stayed down buddy!

Yankees Daily Injury Updates

Mark Teixeira played in actual live baseball today after starting in an extended spring training game along with Kevin Youkilis. Mark Teixeira played in five innings both at the plate and in the field and got five at bats. Mark is expected to take tomorrow off and play extended spring games again Monday and Tuesday before starting his rehab assignment with the Trenton Thunder on Wednesday. Kevin Youkilis got three at bats and played three innings at the plate and in the field but his schedule is not as clear as Mark's is. Kevin seems to be behind Mark Teixeira in the grand scheme of things but still expects to start a rehab assignment in Trenton as early as next week.

Joba Chamberlain also threw two innings as planned in an extended spring game in what could be his final tune up before coming back to the majors after suffering an oblique injury. Joba, like most every other Yankees pitcher this season, took a come back line drive off the bat off of his calf but seems to be fine. If Joba has enough stamina and arm strength after today then he will come back to the majors after almost a month on the DL.

Andy Pettitte and Hiroki Kuroda both threw bullpen sessions today trying to come back from various injuries. Pettitte will throw a simulated game in a few days to test his back before thinking about coming back to the majors. Kuroda reported a little stiffness in his calf and some soreness but that is to be expected and should not keep him from his next start against the Mets.

Yankees Acquire David Huff From Indians

The Yankees have acquired LHP David Huff off waivers from the Cleveland Indians today and have designated fellow LHP Francisco Rondon to make room on the 40 man roster. The Yankees have 72 hours to make a 25 man roster move to bring him to the major leagues. I don't quite get it because Huff is not even a marginal upgrade over Rondon and we are extremely close to having Cesar Cabral after his 30 day rehab assignment started 11 days ago on May 14th.

Game Thread: NYY @ TB 5/25

The Yankees are short a couple of guys again but continued their winning ways last night against the Rays and look to do the same this afternoon at the Trop. Vidal Nuno is pitching today against undefeated and early Cy Young Award leader Matt Moore. Use this thread to chat during the game or follow us on Twitter @GreedyStripes to chat with us all season long.

Here is the Yankees lineup

Brett Gardner CF
Robinson Cano 2B
Vernon Wells LF
Travis Hafner DH
David Adams 3B
Ichiro Suzuki RF
Jayson Nix SS
Lyle Overbay 1B
Austin Romine C

New York Yankees @ Tampa Bay Rays 5/25

The Yankees offense woke up in a big way last night behind David Phelps and hopefully they saved some runs for this afternoon as the same two teams go at it again at Tropicana Field. The Yankees and the Rays have split the first four games head to head this season so the winner today is in the drivers seat in the head to head battle. The Yankees will send Vidal Nuno to the mound to take injured Andy Pettitte's spot and will face off with perfect 8-0 Matt Moore. The game will be televised at 4:10 pm ET on YES, MLB Network, and MLB TV.

David Phelps Has A Bruised Forearm, Won't Miss Start

David Phelps left last nights start with two outs in the 8th inning after taking a line drive off his pitching arm. David was in obvious disgust as he threw his mitt down with his pitching arm showing that the injury was not that bad as originally thought. David has been diagnosed with a bruised right forearm but at this point expects to make his next start against the Mets. Obviously he is going to be reevaluated this morning and in a couple days when he throws his bullpen session and that will be the ultimate test going forward but if he clears all that, and all signs look like he should, then David Phelps really dodged a bullet here tonight.

Brennan Boesch To Be Called Up For Granderson

Brennan Boesch was seen packing his bags last night in Scranton while playing for the Yankees AAA roster the Railriders and seems like he will be the one to replace the injured Curtis Granderson. Boesch's final option was used up and he is already on the 40 man roster so he seems like the obvious one to come up to the majors and go down all season long when necessary on that option. Ichiro Suzuki has to have a little relief now because he was on the verge of becoming a fourth outfielder and is now an every day guy again.

Game 48 Lineup: Yankees @ Rays

Robinson Cano 2B
Vernon Wells LF
Travis Hafner DH
David Adams 3B
Ichiro Suzuki RF
Jayson Nix SS
Lyle Overbay 1B

Notes:

-- Curtis Granderson is going on the DL with a broken pinky bone. The Yankees are calling up Brennan Boesch to take Granderson's spot on the roster.

-- David Phelps is fine after a line drive hit him in his elbow. He has a bruise on his elbow but Phelps should be ready to go by his next start.

-- The New York Mets will honor Mariano Rivera on Tuesday before the game, which is one you don't want to miss: Hiroki Kuroda vs. Matt Harvey. A duel of aces.

This Day In Yankees History 5/25

On this day in 1922 Babe Ruth was thrown out trying to stretch a single into a double and proceeded to throw dirt into an umpires eye. Unhappy Babe went into the crowd after a heckler and was seen standing on the dug out calling the fans in attendance yellow cowards. This tirade would cost Babe Ruth his captain title which he held for less than a week. Ruth would also receive a one game suspension and a $200 fine both which are laughable when you consider what would happen if an incident like this happened in today's game.

On this day in 2011 Mariano Rivera becomes the first pitcher to ever appear in 1,000 games for the same team in his career.
