Staten Island Yankees Game Recap 7/6

YANKEES DEFEATED AFTER RENEGADES 12TH INNING RALLY

By COURTNEY NUNES

Staten Island, NY – July 6th – The Staten Island Yankees tied the game in the seventh and battled the Renegades through 12 innings on Saturday night, but ultimately fell to Hudson Valley 9-4.

Andrew Benak (1-2), who threw 1.1 innings of relief for the Yankees, suffered the loss. He allowed five earned runs off three hits, including a grand slam to Hudson Valley catcher Oscar Hernandez. He walked none and struck out two.

The win went to Renegades’ reliever Jamie Schultz (1-0). Schultz tossed 3.0 hitless innings, while walking one and fanning eight batters.

Staten Island was first to score, as John Murphy singled on a ground ball to plate Yeicok Calderon. Calderon had also singled, and then moved to second on a throwing error by Renegades’ third baseman Tyler Young.

In the following frame, Hudson Valley retaliated with a three-run home run off the bat of second baseman Ariel Soriano. Jonathan Quinonez, who walked, and John Alexander, who reached on an error by Yankees’ third baseman Kale Sumner, both scored on the play.

The Yankees tied the game in the fourth at 3-3. Calderon led things off with a double to left, and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Bubba Jones. Kale Sumner scored the second run on a line drive double by John Murphy.

The Renegades pulled ahead in the sixth as Soriano hit his second home run of the night – this time a solo shot to left center to begin the inning. But in the bottom of the seventh, Eric Jagielo hit his first professional home run to knot the score at 4-4.

Three Hudson Valley hits, two hit batters, and a sacrifice bunt in the 12th, gave the Renegades a four-run advantage and the win.

Calderon led the Yankees’ offense going 3-for-5 with a double and two runs scored; however Staten Island was just 2-for-12 with runners in scoring position, and left seven men on base.

The Yankees will begin a three-game series at home against the Connecticut Tigers tomorrow. First pitch is scheduled for 4:00PM. RHP Giovanny Gallegos (2-1, 4.00 ERA) will toe the mound for the Yankees, while RHP Buck Farmer (0-1, 5.40 ERA) is expected to get the ball for the Tigers.
