On this day in 1996 Derek Jeter was unanimously chosen as the Rookie of the Year from the Major League Baseball Writer's Association of America. Jeter, 22, is the eight Yankees player to win the Rookie of the Year award in their storied history and the first since Dave Righetti won the award in 1981.
