Yankees Should Have Acted Faster w/ Headley

The New York Yankees are on the verge of really screwing up, again, this offseason with Chase Headley. Instead of the team jumping out early and, for lack of a better term, setting the market with Headley by signing him early the team may be without him all together. Headley is the best infielder available entering the Winter Meetings, assuming he does not sign before then, which is not great news for a Yankees team that does not want to give the third baseman a five year deal or $65 million like the reported offer Chase already has in hand.

Could the Yankees have given him a lucrative deal and signed Headley already instead of posturing and reporting how the team does not want to go above three years for his services? I think absolutely they could have. They didn't and this is going to quickly become the second base and third base situation from 2014 when we ended up with Kelly Johnson and Brian Roberts. I understand Martin Prado can play one of the positions and guys like Jose Pirela and Robert Refsnyder can play second base but the team is still left without a true first base backup.

I think the Yankees really dropped the ball here on Headley and the team, and the fans, may end up paying for it. Fiscally or otherwise.

    1. As far as Cashman or the Steinbrenner's? I assume you mean Cashman but I wanted to be sure before I disagreed lol.

  2. I don't have a problem with passing on Headley. I like seeing the Yankees getting younger. It may mean next year's team isn't as good as it could be with someone like Headley, but it also means not having to worry about the downside of a free agent's career. Not to mention a free agent that has a long history of injuries.

I believe the name of the game for 2015 is run prevention. Let Headley go. Sign Robertson, Scherzer, and McCarthy.

    1. I'm torn. I want Robert Refsnyder in the big leagues but I also want a legit backup first base and third base option. I love versatility and flexibility.

    2. Thanks to ARod, and even Beltran I think the team is kind of stuck hoping Alex can fill both spots (backup 3B and 1B).

    3. Bryan we all should be worried about those two, you are right on that point!
IF he can do the job well enough, which I think he can, why not have him as the back-up.
IF his hips are healed, he can do the job. We are talking about one of the games best players...even without Drugs, the dumb shit.
IF Beltran comes into spring in shape this year, he may be able to help the team at the plate, defensively I doubt!

    4. I am not down on A Rod as most. Sure he had a second hip surgery but he has also had a full calendar year to let it heal, rehab, stay in shape etc. I think he will be fine health wise. Whether he lost some timing basically taking two years off is what worries me.

Then again every time he has missed a big chunk of time he comes back not skipping a beat so what do I know.

  3. Prado/A-Rod at 3rd, Tex and A-Rod at 1st, with A-Rod and Beltran at DH along with Tex.
Refy at 2nd and Pirela as 4th OF and 2nd just in case Refy can't hold down the job.
By the way, I think Mato is closer to the Big Show than some may think, not this year but IF he can keep playing as he has, I don't care what his age is, give him a chance in 2016 have him as a call-up in 2015 September.
I know, I am dreaming! So what, old players are a one way ticket to the losing out-house! Damn, no one reads baseball history anymore! Signing older players may give you a Gold Ring but after ONE what do you do with the next 3 to 5 years?

    1. Mateo is no where near the big leagues, not because of his age but because of his production. He didn't even hit .300 in the Gulf Coast League, what would he do in the majors? He won't surely get better that's for sure. He needs at least two seasons in the minors and that's if the Yankees are aggressive with him and let him finish both A Ball levels and end the season in AA in 2015.

He only played in 15 games in the GCL and is likely to head back there or to Pulaski in 2015 to start. He's nowhere close.

    2. I think he will be our SS in 2016-17 at the latest, unless he goes south on us. His hitting will come around, remember he was injured part of the year but, still hit so,so!
I keep jumping back and forth between Mateo, Avelino and Wade!I don't know who of those three will make it and stick in the bigs! It well could be someone else altogether, we have about 8 more of those young guys.
The only one I have seen play is Avelino and he impressed me a lot...the pitchers will be happy to see any one of them playing behind them.

  4. I'd say closer to 2017 but he is "old" for the GCL at 19 years old so anything is possible.

    1. 2017 ain't all bad, but I think it all depends on the players themselves. Real good players come up at 19 to 21 years old at the latest. And I know we can all name a lot of them, no need to do so here. The point of being too young is tenuous at best, talent is talent and it never leaves one, until the players age and legs go south on them!
