By the skin of his teeth the Yankees shortstop of the future
Jorge Mateo has survived the 2015 non-waiver trading deadline. Mateo was donned
as one of the Yankees “untouchable four” prospects along with Luis Severino,
Aaron Judge and Greg Bird and despite the nod of confidence teams still asked
for Mateo in trades. The San Diego Padres asked for Mateo in a trade that would
have sent closer Craig Kimbrel to New York along with his $28 million in
remaining salary straight up.
You can see why teams would be interested in his services,
he’s 20 years old and a plus defender at the shortstop position. He’s already
stolen more than 60 bases this season and his bat is coming around just as fast
as his stolen base total is climbing towards 100. He’s a special kind of talent
and a special kid and I’m glad to say that he’s still in Yankees pinstripes.
The future is bright, the future is Mateo.
