Game Thread: New York Yankees vs. Toronto Blue Jays 9/12 GAME ONE

The New York Yankees and the Toronto Blue Jays will continue their four game series this weekend with the second game of the series coming today in the Bronx. Both teams headed into this series reeling from series losses against the Boston Red Sox and the Baltimore Orioles respectively and both teams will look to take out some aggression from bad play out on each other. This is the first game of a single admission double-header inside Yankee Stadium today so if you've got a ticket to this afternoon's game I hope you packed a lunch. Today the Yankees will send Michael Pineda to the mound looking to hold the Toronto offense in check while the Blue Jays counter with Marco Estrada looking to make the Bronx Bombers bomb-less. The game will be played at 1:05 pm ET and can be seen on FOX and MLB TV.

The Yankees and Blue Jays go head-to-head two more times this weekend in what is probably one of the tougher tickets to get in town. These games are expected to draw a lot of attention and a lot of fans to the ballpark so be sure to get your tickets now by clicking the Yankees Tickets link at the top of the blog. If you can’t make it out to the ballpark live then that’s not a problem, you can always give @GreedyStripes a follow on Twitter and interact with us while we root for the home team from afar.

Pineda is ready to shut down the very right-handed heavy Blue Jays lineup and the Yankees offense is ready to get back into the driver’s seat in this division. Let’s watch, Go Yankees!

  1. Levin won't like this but the three culprits in this loss are as follows. Gardner being a terrible base runner and not advancing to second on the wild pitch and instead being on second he is still on first and when BM gets the big hit Gardner would've scored had he advanced. I have said it numerous times he is a terrible baserunner like Bernie Williams.

Second why in the world would you put Mitchell in such a big game. Girardi once again overthinks this whole situation. Chasen S didn't help as well.

Hey Cashman maybe you should've made a few moves at the deadline or before the deadline instead of relying on the rookies. The wild card lead is only 3 and could be down to 2 1/2 before the night is over. Who is getting canned when the wild card goes bye bye. I am sure it isn't the Elf and he should be the first one gone.

Pineda really looks like crap the last month and can't be counted on to deliver in a big spot. We needed another arm and another bat and we got Bird and Severino. Don't get me wrong I am happy they are up but to be counting on them to deliver is the wrong thought process to have.

    1. I didn't watch the games because I was out of town, so I don't really have a frame of reference, but wow. A guy goes 4-9 with 3 homeruns and drove in 7 of the 12 runs and it's his fault? Rough crowd. That being said, Gardner does not have the best instincts on the base paths. I will agree with you on that.

    2. Levin didn't say anything about his series. I was talking about a specific play which in my opinion cost us the game. It has nothing to do with my feelings about Gardner I'm just stating what I feel was the cause.

    3. Like I said. I didn't watch the game Hans. I can't really make a legitimate argument on Gardners behalf. All I can say is that judging by the box scores, the Yankees had bigger issues than one baserunning mistake.

    4. They definitely have bigger issues, my point was we should have won the game if Gardner took 2nd base on the pass ball. There are a multitude of issues this team has starting at the top with Ownership to its GM to the roster we have. I will not deny that I am surprised we are this close as I picked this team to be third or fourth so I am wrong on that front in my prediction

    5. Whether Gardner scores or not that is not what "cost" us the game. The game was tied, what cost us the game was Bryan Mitchell forgetting where the strike zone was. Gardner scoring could of won us the game just like having A Rod bat and not Dustin Ackley bat could have won us the game. You never know.

    6. Sorry Burch we agree to disagree because you know that Gardner would have scored on that single which in affect would have caused Mitchell never to see the light of day because if memory serves me correct Mitchell came in two innings after that incident. I could be wrong on the timing, which leads me to my next point which is you could have put Warren in that situation and not Miller and your answer will be well he is going to start Tuesday which my answer will be that wasn't decided until Sunday

    7. I also wondered where Warren was in that situation so you're a little off base. I don't understand how we're agreeing to disagree. You say Gardner screwed up, I agreed. I said after the fact that Girardi screwed up, you disagree. Sounds more like you're disagreeing just to disagree.

    8. Go back to my first post I state three people wet the bed and Gardner and Girardi and Mitchell where the top of the group. We disagree that you feel it wasn't Gardners fault they lost and I said it was because the other two people wouldn't be in the position to make that move if Gardner scores. There we disagree

  2. You bag on Gardner, who yes messed up, but you don't mention having the bases loaded and pinch running for Alex Rodriguez. The next time the Yankees threaten you neglect to mention the pinch run of McCann. The Yankees went into extra innings with their two best batters on the bench because Joe Girardi, not Gardner and not Bryan Mitchell, cost us that game.

  3. Burch I totally disagree with you. Go over the game and see that if Gardner scores the game doesn't go any further as we hold them and the score would've been 6-5 game over. Second you don't put a rookie in the game in that situation. He crapped his pants and it showed along with CS. Sorry Burch I'm not buying what you selling on that point and I do mention in a few other posts Girardi was a culprit as well

    1. I mentioned Gardner messing up, I was more or less spreading the blame around rather than leaving it all on one person. Disagree or not.

    2. IF (I still hate that word) BM had hit a double or the others had hit after that, BG would have scored right? So, let's not put the blame on one dumb mistake...there was more than enough to go around.
Daniel is right, we all know that BG has NO base running instincts...only wish he had the instincts of A-Rod or Ells.

    3. You're missing the point Reed. Let's examine this for one quick second. Ells bury and Gardner are on 2nd and first respectively. Rule number one of a base runner is that you follow the lead of the base runner in front of you. If they advance you advance. Second situation is if Gardner does what he is supposed to which is be on 2nd base the single by BM scores two runs which happen to be Ellsbury and Gardner. End of story game over as the Yanks hold after that. I don't understand why you and Burch fail to decipher that? I'm not making this up or talking out of line. He scores on the single. Are there other issues afterwards...hell yes there are but that game would have been ours had he done his job at that particular time.

    4. I got the point Ken H, Brett messed up big time!
I think Daniel and I were trying to point out that in every game there are many IF's that help the game go downhill or a winner.
If BG had gone to 2nd as he should have (we all agree on that) the game would have been over with the following hit. But, one can also point out, teammates pick each other up so why not have made it a double and he would've scored or one more hit and he would have scored?
That is why I hate the word IF so much if this or that had happened instead what did happen the whole game changes...not only in that game but in most every game.

In other words, there is plenty of blame to go around in every game, that is why this game is more than many weekend fan can understand. They see that play and say, get rid of the bum! Or, Tank throws a fastball down the middle for a HR...with the same results...but don't have any idea how hard it is to put every pitch exactly where it is meant to be.
You know the difference Ken H but, many of the other fans don't understand the intrinsic complexity of the game.

  4. I disagree because Gardner would've basically ended the game. To me he gets most of the blame considering he was half way to second and turned back

    1. He messed up, over 162 games everyone messes up. Some make up for it, and I call three home runs making up for it, and some don't, Stephen Drew sucks. He screwed up and it cost us a game. I'd rather focus on the man who has cost us numerous games, Girardi, than Gardner.

I see and understand your point Hans. That doesn't mean I have to agree with it.

  5. If you agreed with me the earth would tilt a few degrees left so I don't expect you or Reed to agree with me and thats ok. Unlike other people I don't fly off the deep end if you disagree with me or not
