This Day In New York Yankees History 10/28

On this day in 1953 Red Barber quit his job as the broadcaster of the Brookyln Dodgers and would find a new job with the New York Yankees. The man nicknamed "The Old Red Head" was upset with Dodgers owner Walter O'Malley over money and lack of support.

On this day in 1979 Dick Howser replaces Billy Martin as the Yankees manager. Howser would lead the Yankees to a 103-59 record with an American League East championship although he was fired by George Steinbrenner when he was swept in the playoffs by the Kansas City Royals.

On this day in 2007 in the middle of Game 4 of the World Series between the Boston Red Sox and the Colorado Rockies we heard the news that Alex Rodriguez had opted out of his contract with the New York Yankees. The timing of the announcement as well as being a no show to receive the Hank Aaron Award, which honors the best offensive player in the league, did not sit well with MLB, Bud Selig, the fans, or the Yankees.

  1. Good one Daniel.....showing another two of hundreds of dbag moves by the walking steroid.

Opting out during the WS? Not showing up for the prestigious Hank Aaron award? Even Mickey Mantle with a blood alcohol level of .7 and an IQ of 7 would have shown up...

    2. It was Boras not A-Rod, Boras had decided to go for more money (For himself).
This from Boras; (Boras also apologized for the timing of the announcement)".
Either way, big mistake on both parties involved.

    5. Exactly Daniel, does anyone but OldRanger and the tooth fairy believe Boras could opt out of Arods contract without Arod knowing about it and giving the OK?

    6. Yes Daniel, he had the permission but, not the timing!
I didn't say or mean in any way that it was not A-Rods call at all...hay, that rhymes!
It was Boras' call for when he told the media...not A-Rod!
I may not put things very well but, I thought most would understand that Boras did what he did without consulting A-Rod on the timing...timing the key word.
The difference between the two of them on when to tell, is simple. A-Rod knew that would be a bad time and didn't even think about it.
Boras, on the other hand, wanted more bang for the BUCK and cared less how it would affect A-Rods Rep...give me the money honey!

  2. TWASP...An IQ of 7, is subjective. Mr. Mantle had no control over his IQ. Yours, must be within 3 points of his. My guess, it is on the low end side. I saw Mantle do a Chevrolet commercial in the early 60's. When he flawlessly delivered the " See the world, in your Chevrolet ! "...I was in awe.
I would of run out, and bought on of those Chevys, but alas, not on a newspaper delivery boy's salary.

  4. Daniel ....found hockey while minding my baby brother, when mom & dad went out on Saturday nights, many years ago. Black & white TV at the time, and only a six team league. All of a sudden they would fight each other, that got a young boys attention real quick !
