So the Yankees Protected Mason Williams

Yeah... about sums it up for me.

  1. Agreed. I think he probably would've been taken, but no way he would have made a big league roster. He would've been returned by the end of spring training anyway. Should have used the spot to protect Roller.

    1. Exactly.

He has the tools to be a solid player in MLB, but as of right now there's no way he'd stick on a 25-man roster all season.

  2. Using that logic Bryan why in the hell did the team protect him. Especially with Ramon Flores, Adonis Garcia, Taylor Dugas, Tyler Austin, and about 19 other guys I could name ahead of him?

And Jeff I can't see protecting Roller. I can't see Roller being picked either but weirder things have happened. Roller is the least of my worries, I think we keep the 27, soon to be 28, year old.

    1. I agree'd that they shouldn't have.

    2. It's possible Roller makes it through, but .283/.378/.497 in AAA, I would take a $50,000 chance.

  3. Williams and Heathcott are among the top 5 OF players talent wise and their upside is great. Slade can't stay healthy a whole season and Williams is a bit of a head case. IF, the day ever (and it may never) comes that they can get over their individual problems, we would have two very good OF for the next 10+ years.
This is the last year for Heathcott and maybe Williams, the team needs the space on the 40 man...just my guess or, as I would do. Too many younger talent coming up the pipe line!

  4. It was rhetorical Mr. Van Dusen. I'm just bewildered at the move, you know? Especially when you leave Mark Montgomery unprotected.

  5. Jeff, you must remember that those numbers came at his age 27 season and in Triple-A. This was far and away his best season at the upper levels. Even as a Yankee there is a reason he was never called up or traded. Not to discredit him, I like him, but he can't even say his saving grace is his defense because he looks out of position playing first.

Think Miguel Cabrera at first base defensively.

    1. Have to disagree a little bit. He doesn't turn 27 until March. He was only drafted 4 years ago (2010), and has hit pretty well at each level. .275/.367/.473 overall minor league numbers. I'm not trying to say he is the next Albert Pujols, and I don't know what his defense is like, but he does seem like a useful piece. I guess we'll find out in a few weeks.

    2. I had the age wrong by a year, I knew I was close though. I didn't look up the stats before I spoke and it looks like maybe I should have when I said "far and away" his best season. I do know for a fact his defense is average at best because the guy is built. He lacks speed, range, etc.

For a team like Miami (before they were forced to compete) he would make sense, just not for us.

  6. Reed,

When ranking your outfielders by promise and talent then Williams def. ranks above a lot of guys. I think I would put Tyler Austin above him in the talent listing right along with Heathcott but that's just me.

Williams, I agree, is a head case. He has gone down hill since the DUI and has not returned. Not to say that he couldn't but honestly I feel, and I could be wrong, that he would be more valuable to the Yankees in a trade then as a kid further clogging up the 40 man roster.

There is so much talent with lesser names in front of him in Scranton and on the totem pole that this seems more like a procedural move then anything. I can't see him sticking there all season. Again though this is a typical Yankees move so I'm probably way off base here.

Question, any news on the Cubans'?

I am really bored, sorry! My wife said I was too old to be setting on all that junk, and playing all that "Old Stuff", so now you get junk! LOL

    1. Braves and Padres lead in the Yasmany Tomas race. Yankees are favorites for Moncada.

    2. I hope so, although in a wonderland type would, it would be nice to have both of them!

    3. Yes I would def. like to have both on the team next season if there were a way to get out of the Beltran contract.
