Game Thread: New York Yankees @ Tampa Bay Rays 5/12

In my best Mortal Kombat voice, “Round Two…. Fight” between the New York Yankees and the Tampa Bay Rays inside Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg. Tonight the Yankees will hopefully send Mr. Nathan Eovaldi to the mound and not Dr. Jekyll to face off against the Rays starter and thorn in the Yankees side Chris Archer. The game will be played at 7:10 pm ET and can be seen on the YES Network and MLB TV.

The Yankees have one more series after this with the Kansas City Royals before returning home to the Bronx to play host to the Texas Rangers. Get your Yankees tickets for that series or any series home or away by clicking the Yankees Tickets link at the top of the blog. You get cheap tickets without having to pay the shipping costs or bulky fees while you help support the blog. If you can’t make it there live then watch the game on television and join us in the comments section of the site and on Twitter (@GreedyStripes) where the conversation is always going on.

Keep Dr. Jekyll in the closet and let Mr. Eovaldi shine tonight in The Trop. Go Yankees!

  1. Another great start from the "Magnificent Eovaldi" what is that three or four in a row now?

  2. ACES EOVALDI,....sounds better than the Magnificent Eovaldi.
    69 pitches through 6 innings.....hitting 98 mph.
    Cashmans great winter trade..........for Prado.

  3. Girardi left him in for about three or four batters too long last night. Becoming a recurring theme in the Bronx.

  4. Great Eovaldi isn't so great. Let's not kid anyone that the Ray's have a potent line-up. Curve ball is adequate at best and his fast-ball is straight. He has done better than I expected but lets not swap spit just yet Patty Boy

    1. If you leave Clayton Kershaw in for too long he's going to get hit more than normal. Eovaldi is not Kershaw so his room for error is much lower than Kershaw's.

  5. I lost 4 points on that one inning, thank you Joe G...and the G is not for genius!
If anyone around here should be bashing "Evolving" Eovaldi, it would be me but I don't believe it was on his head. They have the job of knowing their pitchers, and they goofed up bad...my neighbor even said so at the time he came out to pitch...as did I!
He is getting better, but someone has to be aware of his game, he flattened his arm motion, always a bad sign, in the sixth.

  6. Once this kid learns he need not throw at 98 with his FB he may be able to put a wrinkle in it and only lose about 1 or 3 MPH off it! The Great Sandy Koufax took about 5 years to learn that simple little thing...of course he had a hell of a curve/slider to go with it! Not everyone can have a moving FB, but they can get a little movment...er, most pitchers can!

    1. Are you suggesting keeping his 4 seamer and trying to cut it or moving to a 2 seamer? Both would lose some velocity but add movement.

    2. Well, Yes and No. As hard as he throws, sometimes a small movement of a finger will make the ball have a small wrinkle to it. That would help keep the ball off the meat of the bat. Also, get the FB up around the letters or above the hands...either one is ok because they will swing, "see the ball, hit the ball"!
I haven't checked on it, but he doesn't seem to have much flexibility in his wrist if so, it would be much easier to have him move a finger. It worked for me back in the day and my FB was about as fast as his walk to the mound, well maybe a little slower. LOL

  7. EXPLAINING MYSELF...........
Because of my seasonal business, it is limiting the posts I can paste up here.
I do try, but no brain activity at days end....does not make for humorous posts.
Many times I click off, rather than bore you with dumb dribble.

That said.........with all the stars in alignment, and Colorado eating a big chunk (real big)
of Troy Tulowitzki's salary...I go on record, as saying that he will soon be a NY Yankee.

Tulowitzki will be a star in NY. They pitch around him, offer him nothing, and he is batting .298.
Throw medical theories away ( like Alex'), send Didi, and some other poor souls
to Colorado.....and lets put this season into another gear.
He wants out. He wants New York. See if it can be done.

    1. patrick,

while we miss you it's understood, stop by when you can and don't forget about us!

Sure seems like all signs point to Tulo in the Bronx. Don't get too excited though remember Moncada and Justin Upton just in the last 6 months or so. Both expected to be Yankees 100%, neither were.

  8. SAVING PRIVATE TULOWITZKI....the new American Classic.

    Here's how I see it.
Colorado has a player, Tulowitzki, who wants out. Out of Colorado, and all it's losing ways.
His agent, this week, is going to Colorado mgmt. to ask them to make this happen.

The Colorado fans are more than aware, that Tulowitzki wants no more of their admiration.
That generally results in negative player / fan relationships.
This first bubbled up last year, and it now may become a real cancer.
Colorado mgmt. knows this. They hold no advantage.

The player wants out. The player wants New York. The fans say don't let the door
hit you in the ass on the way out. It can only get worse. And it will.

Colorado has the problem. And again, they have no leverage.
The Yankees can pull this off, and not be robbed while doing it.
The Yanks should say..." You, Colorado, must assume X amount of the players contract."
The Yanks are the solution, not the problem.

The Yanks should then offer a nice collection of mid-level players to placate the
Colorado fans. Whitley, Gregorious, maybe Sanchez, Tyler Austin....but no more.
Sounds simple, sounds do-able, sounds like the Yanks have the leverage.

    1. Patrick, take good care of yourself this summer, the place isn't the same without you!

    2. KEN REED.........
Thank you for the kind words. I'll do my best to try, and find time, to contribute.
As always...I hold you in the highest of regards. Stay well.

Sorry for the Capatcha... Blame the Russians :)
