Three Yankees In Running for Gold Glove Awards

Weekly Check In: Kyle Holder
The Wednesday morning check in has been reserved for the Yankees top first base prospect Greg Bird all season long but with him getting playing time every single day here in the Bronx we had to move on. We're happy for Bird and we're more than happy to check in with another prospect, that prospect will be the Yankees first round pick in the 2015 MLB First Year Player's Draft Kyle Holder.
Yankees GM Brian Cashman caught a ton of flack from the fans and around the league for drafting Holder with their second first round pick of the draft but I think many have eased off of the second guessing. MLB.com has Holder listed as the Yankees 13th best prospect in the system and they have a ton of great things to say about him, seen below:
Scouting grades: Hit: 45 | Power: 30 | Run: 50 | Arm: 55 | Field: 65 | Overall: 50
Holder attended Grossmont (Calif.) JC with the intention of playing baseball and basketball before opting to focus on the diamond. That decision paid off as he blossomed into a first-round pick after a year at Grossmont and two at San Diego, going 30th overall to the Yankees in June and signing for $1.8 million.
Holder was the best defensive player in the 2015 Draft, and the best defensive shortstop from the college ranks in recent memory. The same athleticism that made him a quality guard in basketball translates well to baseball. His range, hands and footwork are all outstanding, and he also has a solid arm.
While he's a potential Gold Glover, Holder may not contribute much offensively. He makes contact at the plate, but he doesn't drive the ball or draw walks very often. An average runner, he'll almost certainly bat at the bottom of a big league order.

Remembering Yankees of the Past: Scott Brosius
Scott Brosius was an integral part of the Yankees dynasty
years in the early 90’s after being traded to New York for Kenny Rogers.
Brosius hit .304 and belted 22 home runs in 1996 for the Oakland Athletics but
struggled mightily in 1997 and finished last in the batting title race with the
lowest batting average, on base percentage, and slugging out of all the players
eligible for the batting title that season. Rogers was also struggling with the
Yankees and a change of scenery was in order for both men and the rest, as you
will read below, is history.
Brosius hit .300 and knocked in 19 home runs and 98 RBI’s in
his first year in the Bronx as an integral part of possibly the greatest team
of all time, the 1998 Yankees. Brosius would make his only All Star Game
appearance this season and hit .471 with two home runs and six RBI’s in the
1998 World Series to capture his first ring. Brosius was named Most Valuable
Player of the series after hitting two home runs in Game 3 of the World Series
including one off the San Diego Padres closer Trevor Hoffman to give the
Yankees a 3-0 series lead.
Brosius never matched his career year in 1998 statistically
but was still always a fan favorite of the 1999-2001 teams. Brosius worked
hard, played the game right, and was always on the field no matter what if
humanly possible. Brosius was a part of three World Series championship teams
and one more that lost the World Series in 2001 to the Arizona Diamondbacks,
his final professional season. Brosius went out big time though as he hit a two
out, two run home run in the bottom of the ninth inning of Game 5 of that World
Series against Arizona to send the game to extra innings in an eventual Yankees
victory, possibly his finest moment.
Brosius has a Gold Glove Award from 1999 sitting in
his trophy case in his home and also has a great story to tell about playing in
the field in 1999. Brosius was at third base when the Montreal Expos Orlando
Cabrera hit a foul popup that Brosius caught and sealed a perfect game for
David Cone. Brosius will forever be known to many Yankees fans, and ESPN’s
Chris Berman specifically, as Scott Supercalifragilisticexpiali-Brosius or
Bosius the Ferocious, as John Sterling called him, but for me personally
Brosius will forever be remembered as a Yankee.

ESPN's Hall of 100 Ranks Derek Jeter All-Time
For much of the 20 season career of Derek Jeter many around the league thought of the Yankees shortstop as one of the best of our generation and definitely in the conversation among the greatest of all-time. ESPN worked on a list of the Top 100 players in Major League history and Jeter's name appeared on the list in the #31 position making him the 31st best player in Major League history.
Jeter won five World Series titles in his career and made the postseason 18 times, seven times making the World Series, while being named to 14 All-Star games. Jeter also won five Gold Glove Awards and was named the 1996 American League Rookie of the Year. No Yankees Considered For Gold Gloves
In a bit of surprising news not a single member of the New York Yankees is up for consideration for a Gold Glove Award in the American League this season. The Gold Glove Award has taken a back seat to the Fielding Bible Award in most fan's eyes but for not a single Yankee to even be in the conversation is a bit surprising.

This Day In New York Yankees History 9/15: Derek Jeter Deserves An Oscar
Derek Jeter has had an illustrious career with the New York Yankees including 14 All Star appearances, a 1996 Rookie of the Year award, 2000 All Star Game MVP award, 2000 World Series MVP award, Hank Aaron awards, Babe Ruth award winner, Roberto Clemente award winner, Lou Gehrig Memorial award, five Gold Glove awards, five Silver Slugger awards, and many other notable achievements and awards in his career but on this day in 2010 Jeter gave an Oscar worthy performance.

The 2015 Infield Defense Would Shine w/ Rusney Castillo
If the New York Yankees were able to pull Rusney Castillo to the Bronx and plug him in at second base the Yankees could have a pretty stellar infield defense in 2015. Obviously a lot has to happen between then and now for that to happen but nothing too far out of the realm of possibility. Imagine this:
Mark Teixeira's Gold Glove award playing defense at first, young and fresh legs in Rusney Castillo at second base, Stephen Drew (or equivalent) at shortstop, and Chase Headley at third base. Not too many ground balls are getting through that infield. That opens up the designated hitter spot for Alex Rodriguez and still leaves plenty of money to acquire a starting pitcher.
This does create a bit of a logjam though with Martin Prado already signed up for 2015 and this also forces Carlos Beltran to be an outfielder for much of the season but manager Joe Girardi can make it work. The Yankees will get injured, the Yankees will need a day or two of rest from time to time, and Girardi would have so many options with Castillo in the fold the binder would explode. My only issue is that is blocks Robert Refsnyder at second base and may force him to learn yet another new position.
Castillo's right handed lead off type bat would give the Yankees essentially three lead off hitters at the top of the lineup in Gardner, Castillo, and Ellsbury. That would create all kinds of headaches for teams if one or two of these guys were to get on base. If you think speed kills now imagine how much damage the Yankees could do with Castillo on the base paths.
It's a dream but at one point so was having Headley and Martin Prado. Plus I like being a dreamer.

Chase Headley Has Been Just What The Doctor Ordered
Chase Headley has been just what the doctor ordered in New
York. Headley came over from the San Diego Padres and immediately helped with
an infield defense that was severely lacking. Headley took over the hot corner
and has played Gold Glove defense over there replacing the revolving door of
Kelly Johnson, Yangervis Solarte, and others. Headley also played first base
out of necessity on Monday in place of the dizzy Mark Teixeira and filled in
admirably. Headley actually almost looked comfortable over at first base and
could be a legitimate backup for Teixeira with the addition of Martin Prado.
Headley played shortstop in college and could back up for
Derek Jeter at short or Stephen Drew at second if need be in a pinch. Headley
came up as a left fielder in spacious San Diego and could easily translate into
an outfielder in New York if need be as well. Headley has not excelled with the
bat like some would have hoped for but his presence alone helps.
Headley is a switch hitter that along with Carlos Beltran and
Mark Teixeira brings us closer to the glory days of when it was such a headache
to matchup with the Yankees because of the numerous switch hitters. Headley can
get it done with the bat and genuinely looks like he wants to be here, and that
counts for a lot in my book. Headley adds versatility, flexibility,
professionalism, and may be just what the doctor ordered for 2014 and beyond
for the New York Yankees.

Derek Jeter Owes Mark Teixeira Two Gold Gloves
It's an amazing stat when you think about it but since Derek Jeter has broken into the big leagues in 1995 he has only played with four full time first baseman, Don Mattingly, Tino Martinez, Jason Giambi, and Mark Teixeira. Of course there was the Richie Sexson's, Nick Johnson's, etc. of the world involved as well but these were the main guys. Now Jeter has never been known for his defensive prowess but quietly Mark Teixeira has turned Jeter into an average defender surprisingly.
Don Mattingly - 1995
Jeter had two errors in 15 games
Tino Martinez - 1996 to 2001
Jeter had 102 errors in six seasons
Jason Giambi - 2002 to 2008
Jeter had 101 errors in seven seasons
Mark Teixeira - 2009 to present
Jeter has (to date including the 2014 season) 44 errors including a career low (for a full season) six in 2010 in six seasons.
Jeter won a Gold Glove Award in 2004, 2005, and 2006 with the help of Jason Giambi and won two more in 2009 and 2010 with Mark Teixeira. In most opinions Jeter did not deserve the first three awards, and who could blame them with a fielding percentage of .981, .979, and .975? Jeter deserved his in 2009 and 2010 with a fielding percentage of .986 and .989 and much of that can be attributed to the defense of Mark Teixeira.
Too many times have we seen Teixeira save a ball thrown high or pick a ball out of the dirt, and not just for Jeter, and not get enough recognition for it. I thank you Mark and Jeter should be too.

Yankee Stadium Legacy: #37 Elston Howard
Elston Howard held down the catchers position for the New York Yankees in the 1960's and in that span the Bronx Bombers went to five straight World Series from 1960 to 1964. Howard's 1963 season was the most note worthy as he won an American League Gold Glove Award and a Most Valuable Player Award. Howard had 85 RBI's, scored 75 runs, and hit a career high 28 home runs that season.

Derek Jeter's New Contract Explained, Finally
It is official thanks to Joel Sherman that Derek Jeter's new contract will indeed cost the New York Yankees money on their $189 million luxury tax AAV and not save them money. The original deal had Jeter simply accepted his player option would have been for a $10,750,000 AAV and this new deal is worth somewhere in the neighborhood of $12,810,000. The Yankees were not concerned with AAV and the luxury tax threshold but more worried about making Derek happy and not having an awkward or drawn out negotiation like the last time Derek was a free agent.
Derek's new contract also includes incentives which could push the deal higher including $4,000,000 for a MVP award and $2,000,000 if he finishes anywhere between second and sixth place. Also Derek could make an additional $1,500,000 if he wins the Silver Slugger award, $500,000 for winning the ALCS MVP, another $500,000 for winning the World Series MVP award, and finally $500,000 more for winning the gold glove.
Now that we have that settled we can move on to qualifying offers...

Dustin Pedroia Wins Gold Glove For Second Base
The Yankees only finalist in the Gold Glove Award running was Robinson Cano at second base for the American League and the winners were announced last night and the Red Sox Dustin Pedroia beat out Cano for the award. Cano was the reigning champion and has two Gold Gloves already in his cabinet but this one goes to the one they call "Peddy."

Cano The Only Yankee Named As Gold Glove Finalist
Robinson Cano was named as a finalists for a Gold Glove award today and was the only Yankees player to make the list. Three finalists for each position were named today from Rawlings baseball and Cano tops the list for second basemen.
Here is the entire list for the American League and as you can see there are a lot of Tampa Bay Rays represented with their entire infield present. Also two of the three outfielders from the Boston Red Sox, Baltimore Orioles, Kansas City Royals, and Oakland Athletics were represented as well. Obviously that leaves no room for Brett Gardner who was probably a better candidate then Adam Jones but what do I know right?
